Jack London Square is one of my favorite places to slow down and enjoy the day. There are great restaurants and cafés, a pet store, a candy shop, and a store for water sports and outdoor gear. It's also just a short walk to World Market, a nearby movie theater, and downtown Oakland. If you're driving, there's a convenient parking garage. What I love most is that you don't have to spend any money to enjoy yourself. You can sit under the trees, watch the boats, stretch out on the grass, listen to live music, and simply enjoy the waterfront. The square itself is pedestrian-friendly, so you can relax without traffic rushing by. Sundays are especially enjoyable with the farmers market and live performances. Today I'm listening to the talented musicians from the Oaktown Jazz Workshops, who also have a home right here in Jack London Square. Every now and then, you'll hear a train passing by, which somehow adds to the character of the place. I'm really going to miss The Plank. It was such a fun community gathering spot and a place where I often came just to unwind. Another bonus is the free shuttle from Alameda, which makes getting here easy and enjoyable. Whether you're looking for a meal, a movie, a waterfront stroll, or simply a peaceful no cost place to sit and recharge, Jack London Square is well worth a visit. read more

It was a nice tourist area for their farmer's market, food trucks, biking, walking, restaurants, sightseeing, ferry, etc. Though, I know they were hit hard by Covid/pandemic which closed a lot of businesses and the hotel. A frequent ferry passenger, I would be remiss if I didn't give Jack London Square at least five stars. It's a lovely place to stroll by the water or check out the weekly farmers market during the day. Everyone is friendly. There's also a small but delish selection of restaurants to choose from and most menu prices aren't as sky high as elsewhere. Definitely a part of Oakland worth noting. read more

Named after the author Jack London and owned by the Port of Oakland. Quality/Quantity - Sadly they still have a long way to go. Lost our Golden State Warriors to San Francisco. Lost our Raiders to Las Vegas. Go Oakland A's!!! Well, they are in Sacramento right now, soon to be in LV... Atmosphere - Personally, I like having this place to myself... But every now and then, it would be nice to have company, LOL. Sundays = Farmers market. Getting smaller and smaller, less and less vendors. Ferry = 5 stars, a great way to travel. The best is the free water taxi from Alameda and back. I have not tried it yet, but I can't wait! Restaurants: Farmhouse Kitchen = 5 Stars. Forge = Good for beer, happy hour, and people watching. It is still on my list to try their food. Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon = Have to stop by and support them. They are one of the oldest bars in Oakland, if not CA. Planks = A cool spot, but not my vibe. Rosenblum Winery = 5 stars, see my other Yelp review. Scotts = Blast from the past. I have not been here in decades. The coolest part is the public dock. You can sail your boat, dock, and have lunch here. Seabreeze = Newest restaurant here. I've been here, but it was during my pre-Yelp life. ;) Etc. On their website they also have the following restaurants which I did not really consider as part of Jack London Square?!?! Ben & Jerry, Dragon Gate, Kuidaore (new?), Mia, Noka, Yoshis (one of our favorites), etc. The former presidential yacht USS Potomac is also moored at an adjacent slip. Service - Okay. Oh Jack London Square, I've missed you in your glory days of over a decade and a half ago. I remembered in the late 2000s when I first experienced your vibrancy and all the cool events you hosted from arts & crafts festivals to farmers markets to everything in between. Those were good times. Post pandemic, things dwindled. One of my previous visits was in 2022 when I got to check out the 90s Exhibit and the neighboring stores/restaurants were about 1/2 occupied. Fast forward to my most recent visit of a few Saturdays ago, you're now at 3/4 vacancy, I was even shocked to find some of your anchor restaurants gone. I'm not giving up on you just yet. I enjoyed jack london square. I've never had an issue here. Lots of restaurants and entertainment. Walking distance from downtown and the ART train. Amtrak delivers you directly to this location as well. You don't even have to drive. I would be interested in exploring some of the restaurants in the square. Jack London Square isn't just a place for great restaurants and shopping, they hold some awesome festivals and events here too, from food fests to art and music exhibitions, most of them free of cost. I've been to quite a few community gatherings and celebrations at this lovely location over the years, and it's always a good time. This past Saturday, we attended the Holiday Tree Lighting, and were entertained by a laser light show, musical performances on stage, and fun characters on site, like Frosty the Snowman and an elf on stilts. We also viewed the Lighted Yacht Parade on the water, numerous boats decorated and lit up, full of color and christmas spirit, for the crowd's amusement. Most of all, we enjoyed the beautiful waterfront setting which is always a treat at Jack London Square. Businesses here have come and gone, but some great ones remain, such as Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon, and there are some newer restaurants that offer decent options for dining, and entertainment centers, like Plank, that provide family-friendly fun. Then there are some deserted and vacant spaces, which on a non-event day makes the place feel a bit dead. Still, there's a lot to appreciate at JLS, including its history, along with several public art pieces and monuments for visitors to explore, such as Jack London's Cabin and the accompanying wolf sculpture. And it's easy to access, with public transportation nearby. If you want free street parking on event days, come early. Otherwise, there are several parking garages in the area that charge a fee. read more

I think this area of the waterfront is still under development, as there are some vacant storefronts, but it was a clean, spacious and well lit place to take a stroll after work while staying in downtown Oakland. My favorite part is the family-owned sweets shop that sells brands from my childhood that I haven't seen in years, like Chuckles and Fun Dip! I got in a few thousand steps walking up and down the large open sidewalks and along the waterfront. All very clean, fresh and new. No one was smoking. Cool fountain. I had a nice evening. read more

Enjoy a wonderful evening stroll at the Marina by Jack London Square this Friday night. Make sure to catch the sunset and soak in the live music performances. Have an amazing time! I still enjoy coming to Jack London Square for lots of reasons!! They have a lot of festivals here now, Eat Real Festival, Cinco De Mayo Festival, Oakland A's Fanfest just to name a few. Plank seems to be the liveliest restaurant here with their outdoor Beer Garden with all the TV screens. It's a good place to pop in to without feeling committed. But there are others here as well, Seabreeze On the Dock, Forge Pizza, Scott's Seafood Restaurant has been here a long time, and Farmhouse kitchen are the main ones. They also have Jack London Cinema which is directly across the street from the parking garage. I don't come here as often as I used to, but this is a great place to just enjoy, the Marina is a great place for sunsets, you can grab a drink old school style at the First And Last Chance Saloon, or hang out on the Ferry Lawn!! Always a good time here!! It used to be really lively here at night, but now I think there's more people here during the day than night. World renowned author Jack London lived not far from the square named after him. The square does not exude the spirit of the author as much as sell a nightlife experience in the form of touristy restaurants and music venues. I really like the lounge chair public bench design to soak up the sun. There is a ferry that operates from the San Francisco Ferry terminal, which is one of my favorite bay experiences and cheaper than a tour boat. The Capitol Corridor train also lands here in its way from San Jose to Sacramento and even Colfax if that is where the winds of adventure blow you. Favorite quote: "I would rather be ashes than dust! We have been here multiple times. I like going here because of the bay view and has a spacious walk area. You can browse while waiting for your seat at a restaurant or take couple of pics in some spots of the bay. There's multiple restaurants to choose from and if your group feels like bowling, there's a really nice alley called Plank. It's a resto bar with huge screens and has music playing in the background. They have an arcade too and It looks fun! Most restaurants here has an outdoor dining so you can have a bayview while eating. There's also a walking trail if you want to go for a long walk. It's just sad that there's more than a couple of vacancies we noticed. This must be due to the pandemic. Hopefully they get filled soon! We will keep coming back here. read more

Aaahh, Jack London Square. It's definitely not the same as it used to be, but it's still a historic Oakland staple that deserves much recognition. Been coming to Jack London Square for years and it truly holds a special place in my heart. I have so many wonderful memories of hanging out in this square with family and friends over the years. This used to be the major kick it spot for my friends and I back in the day. Nowadays, it seems a bit jaded as many of the long-time businesses have closed up shop. But even though many of my favorites have closed over the years (Miss Pearl's, Kincaids, etc.), there are still some real gems here. When it comes to Jack London Square for me, it's definitely all about the food and drink. There are some awesome restaurants and bars here. Heinold's is one of my favorite classic dives and it's also one of the most popular bars in the square. There are some wonderful tasting rooms here like Minimo, Rosenblum, and Crooked City Cider. They've also got a nice amount of breweries around, many of which are newish. As far as restaurants go, there's a ton. A few of my favorites include: *Scott's Seafood *Oakland Grill *Buttercup *Chop Bar *The Fat Lady *Home of Chicken & Waffles (for the food not the service) As far as entertainment and activities go, there's a lot to do here in the square. Yoshi's has been a long-standing lounge for great live music (the food isn't my favorite, but the shows have been awesome). Plank is a fun spot to visit if you're into bowling, but they also have a nice outdoor bar are with firepits too. There's a weekly farmer's market that runs year around and usually features some well-known Bay Area vendors and food trucks. The marina offers boating activities and there's a great paved path that's excellent for walking and running. There's a large grassy area where you can lounge out and picnic. They've recently added several lounge chairs and picnic tables for outdoor dining and relaxing. They usually have several events here throughout the year (hasn't been as prevalent during COVID). My absolute favorite annual event to attend in the square is the Eat Real Festival! Hands down one of the best foodie events in the Bay Area! I've always discovered some of the best food trucks and vendors during this festival. Plus, I get to stuff my face to death all day with yummy food. During the holidays, they put a huge Christmas Tree up and they usually have a tree lighting ceremony. They often have live music and other fun events going on. There's a parking garage that's conveniently located underground right in the middle of the square and they also offer valet parking. I honestly have only parked in that parking garage maybe a handful of times. I'm usually able to find a spot a few blocks down on the street (I've been doing this for years). It used to really be bustling around here, but I think COVID really took a beating on its' charm. But even with that, it's still thriving. I will always have love for Jack London Square. read more

What's not to like about Jack London Square? Back in my youth, which for the record, was a long time ago, this area was a pit. A complete pit. It was all warehouses and industrial spaces, and then Cost Plus showed up and then Barnes & Noble (which is now a hipster bowling alley). I'd go to Nation's for a burger and fries and felt like I was taking my life into my own hands. But now it has evolved into an actual destination with a particularly pleasing waterfront and boat marina next to the estuary that separates Oakland from Alameda. You add the farmers' market on Sundays, the ferry service to San Francisco, and enough mid-scale restaurants to choke a Yelper, you've got a valid reason for the A's to stick around. Hopefully. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel but it took like 30 minutes to order and receive my food. As I ate my sandwich I noticed that there were only 3 pieces of bacon and didn't cover the entire sandwich. An attractive and historical place, where "pavement meets water" as their website boasts (um, that also explains sewers), Oakland's only publicly accessible waterfront is unique in that that can be both a place to relax, courtesy a dog-friendly marina with bench-lined trails, small lawn and decks for views of the City at a distance and boats, including USS Potomac (FDR's fishing boat and "floating White House" used for the boat scenes in "The Master") or to seek a crowd, courtesy a Farmers Market, special events, and half a dozen overprices restaurant patios. Highlights include Jack London's relocated Klondike cabin and Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon, where Jack London, practiced his writing, inspired by both his drinking nights there and his adventures at the once-bustling seaport. For such a large area, there aren't as many food and shopping options as one might expect. That might change if the Oakland A's move here and they need to accommodate their 2,000 screaming fans. read more

It's okay. That's probably the best way to describe Jack London Square. It has the feel of a strip mall that has been replaced a couple blocks down by a better strip mall but it's still open and some folks still come there to shop at Tuesday Morning before it's inevitable 'Going out of Business Sale'. There are a few nice seated restaurants, but none really feel like they have their own style. There are boats to look at, and you might get hit by the super loud CalTrain if you're too drunk. Otherwise, there's nothing to do here. A few trinket shops have survived, but they are just shells of themselves selling stuff no one seems to be buying. read more

My desire to dine at the House of Chicken and Waffles led me here. I've never been to this part of Oakland which is situated along the Oakland waterfront. Not sure though if the place is actually expanding or on its dying down stages due to many vacancies but I didn't care as I truly enjoyed my time here. I loved that it's clean, peaceful and less busy than any other touristy areas. The first thing I saw when I arrived here was the Amtrak Station and on the other side was Ferry terminal. Then I kept walking and towards the marina wherein I enjoyed the view of the sea. There were several yatchs docked in this marina. Lots of shops and dining establishments. I saw two gorgeous fountains and several sculptures, one of which is Jack London, who spent his boyhood in this part of town before it was named after him. London who's famous for his literary work, Call of the Wild is honored by the city, not just with his bronze life bronzed statue, but also with the recreated model of the cabin he lived in Yukon. Also nearby is a sculpture of a wolf that gave him inspiration. read more

First time to the area, and I was very impressed! I used one of those rental scooters to get around the square to check things out at first. If you do rent one of those little scooters, please note that you're not supposed to leave them parked in Jack London Square. But you can take them right across the Embarcadero and lock them there. There are quite a few sites to see here, both natural sites as well as some of the shops. Perhaps my favorite business was Plank, which has a fantastic Biergarten! If you come to Jack London square and you like beer, you will love Plank! The square is right next to a beautiful shoreline, so take the time to check out the sights, as well as a few statues around. Some of the statues relate to Jack London, of course, but other notables are included as well. You can even see a replica of Jack London's original Log Cabin. I looked inside, but I did not see Jack. You can also catch a train here, or catch the ferry. If you need ferry tickets you can get them at the visitor center which is very close by. If you haven't been to Jack London Square in a while, check it out. It was actually far different than I had imagined. Jack London Square is a great spot for meetups with friends and family for a quick bite to eat and just walk around the port of Oakland and view all the beautiful scenery it offers. Located just right past Chinatown Downtown Oakland lays the beautiful area Known as Jack London Square. They have underground parking on site for a rated fee or you can get lucky ad find some free 2 hour parking on the back roads. There is a lot of restaurants on site as well as shopping and stores for all your needs. During Christmas they have a Huge Christmas tree they center in the middle where you can take wonderful photos and cherish the memories. They have tons of boats and yacht's being anchored on the pier and also have a viewing telescope where you can look and see the lovely city of San Francisco across the ocean as well as the Oakland Bay bridge and many other fascinating things free of charge. There are plenty of benches where you can sit and relax as well as statues of Jack London himself and also his log cabin and a wolve. The place holds tons of history about Oakland and how the area developed with key dates and people. While you are there you will see a lot about the Oakland Athletics Major League Baseball team and the reason for that is they well soon be building there newest home field in the location. There is a picture of how it will look and wow I just cant get over how beautiful the architecture and the site will be. Other than that I look forward to coming back and enjoying one of the nice restaurants while walking around the pier getting my steps in and soaking in some nice sunshine with the Bay Area cool breeze. Was here most recently the night of the official tree lighting. Lots of foot traffic and was a pleasant evening. The popularity of JLS has been all over the place over the past years - but these days it seems to be doing well. Evens of all sorts during the year bring people in and overall its got a lot to offer. A beautiful waterfront with restaurants, bars and other nightlife. It doesn't get more iconic in Oakland than the Jack London Square and Waterfront, which has served the local dining scene along the beautiful waterfront that makes up this historical port, where for generations served port workers such as longshoreman, produce marketers, fishermen, and journeymen alike. Opened almost seven decades ago, back in 1951, when Oakland's Board of Port Commissioners named four blocks of waterfront area after one of its most famous former residents as novelist Jack London worked in the area and spent time at a saloon in the square during his youth, which helped draw much inspiration for his novels. Jack London Square may have seen its ups and downs in the few decades with businesses from book stores to restaurants opening and closing, but in the past few years, several popular restaurants have opened on its waterfront making it a prime destination for locals looking for a solid bite to eat in a sublime location. With plans for a food hall that are constantly in flux and the possibility of a new A's stadium on port land nearby, this area may finally become the "waterfront dining destination" that Oakland officials hoped it would be when they first dedicated it to the famous author. Seven decades ago, Oakland officials assumed the London name would help attract tourists and build a destination similar to that of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. While the hope of it growing into to kind of popularity in the other city by the bay, Jack London Square has had some unique dining and drinking destinations that has kept me coming back. Parking can be a bit challenging around the area as a number of apartment and condominium towers have begun sprouting up around the area, but if parking isn't an option there's always the free Broadway Shuttle, run by the city of Oakland, it provides complimentary bus service from downtown Oakland all the way to the waterfront, so taking Bart to the Square is as easy as that. One of my favorite things about the square is the growing number wine tasting rooms that have opened around the neighborhood, that and the increasing number of breweries and old-time saloon has made this the reason of why I go down to the square. I have do have a fondness for walking around the area, looking to see what new businesses are popping up, including the expansion of one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Bay Area, Farmhouse Kitchen, with patio dining along the wharf, in my opinion, they provide the best dinner in the entire square. Not as if there is a lot of competition out there in the area, as the recent downturn and current events have led to the full-time closure of Lungomare, Kincaid's and Il Pescatore and the temporary closures of Scott's Seafood, Dyafa, and Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon. One could consider this closures a sign of the times, as Jack London Square once had such businesses as Barnes & Noble, Old Spaghetti Factory and Tony Roma's. What can't be denied is the potential that remains in Jack London Square with its centerpiece currently being the Plank bowling alley and bar, which proves that new businesses can thrive here, and a bold future should the Oakland Assembly food hall ever make it to realization. This addition, as well as additional hotels and apartment buildings, with retail on their ground floor could really prove that crucial turning point that Jack London Square is so desperately searching for. Only time will tell if smaller independently owned shops and restaurants will thrive here as well, as the area remains a vital ferry terminal and train depot where travelers pass in and out of. Where else can you spend a weekend afternoon enjoying kayaking and canoeing in the estuary then shop for produce from local vendors at Farmer's Market and then watch a movie and enjoy dinner and drinks, all in one four block radius. Not many as far as I can see, even in the eclectic Bay Area, so enjoy Jack London Square in its current state while you can. read more

Beautiful waterfront space to eat or walk ~ Jack London Square holds a special place in my heart as I used to live/work in the lofts walking distance nearby before anything developed into what it is today. I still remember taking our Australian shepherd for a walk along the way when it was just a few restaurants (some still there/some not), barely any residents or grass for her to play. Whenever I'm back in the area, this is one of the areas I'll revisit to eat at a restaurant, catch the sunset or early morning coffee walk. The marina is relatively clean, peaceful, family and pet/pedestrian-friendly, with views of Alameda and San Francisco. Modern wooden benches and decent public restrooms are available. While I prefer not to use public restrooms if there's other options, the women's restrooms here thankfully did not make me cringe. Some restaurants open up around 11am. Metered parking or garage parking options. With one of my fave Farmhouse Thai restaurants here, it's always a good reason to come to Jack London Square or for farmers market. If I were ever to live in Oakland again, this would be a potential neighborhood. read more

I once got to talk to him. I was stoked! I could also see the woman behind the giant head, but she was a representative so I wasn't too disappointed. My dad had a business there for many years. It moved there after Jack London Village closed down. I didn't like it as much. But on Sunday's, I'd visit my dad and the farmer's market. It was a ritual that I loved. I loved the Barnes and Nobel store, the Spaghetti Factory, El Torito's, TGI Fridays, Pizzaria Uno, and more. I didn't eat in them - yech! But, I had fond memories of them and liked seeing them. Bel Campo is there and I like them. So is miette - inspiration to cook sweet things, but I can't eat most of them. Forge, seems awesome, but their food is too sweet. And there's a whole corridor with artsy things happening, but nothing that really moves me. But now, it feels like there is no there, there. And when I go, I often regret the decision. It's like Hahns Hibachi used to be. I was excited about the prospect of going until I sat down and saw my meal. Cute place for a stroll along the water. Not the best views in the world but nice enough. There are a lot of restaurants here with some small shops interspersed. Most of them looked like the more expensive touristy "you will pay more because of this cute location" kind of places but that's ok since this place seems more like a destination. The one thing that super impressed me was the sheer amount of seating. There are a lot of places to lounge here. Be on the lookout for events that happen here. We were here for a wine walk and it was really nice. Laid out well. read more

Definitely dropping my rating to one star after finding out that all vehicles are not safe here. S/O rented a getaway car. We go up to the 5th floor of the parking garage to find a car with smashed windows. Came back the next day and S/O said that all the vehicles up there had all their windows smashed. The Square isn't the place to be. I thought I would be charmed by the long walls on the pier or the beautiful sunset but all that shut down after knowing this place isn't safe at all. Not to mention how dirty the streets are, yuck. All the posh restaurants were closed early on a Saturday afternoon but we found ourselves running into a real neat arcade-like restaurant. Nonetheless, I truly enjoyed the sunset at the walk along the pier. Other than that, it's an easy pass for me. read more

Beautiful place with a extensive open air plaza along the oakland water front which has many restaurants and business near by. Restaurants they have here are Bocanova, Forge Pizza, Haven, Hanh's Hibachi, Il Poscatore, jacks fish house, Kincaid's, Lungonare, Plank, Scott's Seafood and Yoshi's. Jacks Fish house has slurp oysters and feast on fish featured oysters for $1.50 from 3-6 PM everyday. Kincaid's has happy hour at 3 PM to 5 PM 50% appetizers and drink specials. Lungomare has a lunch prefix menu from Monday to Fridays, three course meal between 11 AM and 3 PM. They have happy hour daily from 3-6pm. They also have live music Fridays from 9:30 PM to 12 AM. On Sunday's they do a winedown from 5:30-10pm, $30 includes a special menu of a 3 course meal and endless glasses of tap wine per person. Jack of all trades takes place on the second Saturday of every month. It's a market that's free entry, live music and DIY workshops from 11 AM - 5 PM. They have a farmers market on Sundays from 9 AM to 2 PM year-round. On Sunday's free yoga classes 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Pavilion Plaza.
