Easton's Books is the quintessential used bookstore tucked away in an older building with towering bookcases stacked full of various books. Each book section is clearly marked and no book section is small. Often topics will creep into the other areas. Being a used bookstore their stock is understandably inconsistent. Some books are rare little gemstones, one of a kind treasures. Others are fascinating because there are duplicates of random tomes, like yacht types from the 1980's, that made me wonder how they had more than one at all. The store feels old. A used bookstore, I suppose, should feel old. I enjoyed walking through the aisles looking up at all the various titles. The employees stayed by the front desk - a couple older men who were exchanging stories of tulip festivals long since past. While they didn't engage people walking through they always turned their full attention to any customer who needed their help. It is a fascinating store! read more

Honestly about as good as it gets. Pretty much only used books (as the lord intended), all reasonably priced, massive selection. The philosophy section is one of the absolute best I have ever seen at any bookstore period, it's better than even a place like Powell's. I spent close to an hour in that section alone. I find the staff very friendly, if not a little eclectic, but that's perfect for a place like this. Love this place. read more

Although I don't live very close, I make a point of visiting at least once a year, as much for the vibe as the massive selection. It's in a midsize brick and mortar building absolutely jam packed with books, and the entire place has that old book smell. The shelves are high and there are myriad nooks and crannies, so that the entire place has a hidden, almost labyrinthine atmosphere. The guy who runs it (whom I presume to be Easton) can be a little gruff and there's no database for what they have in stock, but that really just adds to the old bookstore vibes. The selection, as I mentioned before, is massive, and inexplicably well priced. I bought a couple hardcover volumes with marbled interiors for 2.95 apiece! Two dollars and ninety five cents. Think about that. I don't know how they make a profit with those prices, but I love it. read more

Although I love this book store and their wonderful selection and organized books, the elderly gentelman who was working was not welcoming at all! He was so concerned with leaving at the 5:30 close time... he came and touched my shoulders (I don't like being touched by strangers) and told me at 5:23 PM that it was "time to go". I was going to be purchasing over several books and he wanted to go. I overheard him talking to another customer who was inquiring about a book that he thought was pricey and the employee gentleman said "you obviously don't know much about the book business". I thought that sounded very rude to say to a customer. I really don't think he helps this business garner return customers. read more

Wonderful selection! Had a great time looking through everything and scored 4 books! Very excited about my finds.

I was in the kids section with my toddler and we had a stack of books we were going to buy. As my daughter is picking out another book the owner stormed over and raised his voice telling her not to push the books around because he has to reorganize them. Mind you we were grabbing books to buy, had not moved anything else, we were being gentle, and we were in the children's section. I found it appalling for a grown man to stomp over and speak to a baby disrespectfully. Not her mother or the other adult we were with, he went to my daughter to say something. We immediately put the books back that we were going to buy and left. Honestly don't have a children's section if you don't want children in the store. read more

What a wonderful little book store! I live in Bellingham and don't come down to Mount Vernon very often, but I am so glad I did today. My daughter and I walked into this store and stayed for 45 minutes. They have a wonderful assortment and the prices were very fair. I left with 2 new books that I can't wait to dig into. Easton's has a wonderful selection, especially for a smaller and conservative city like Mount Vernon. I enjoy visiting here whenever I'm in town. My biggest complaint is that the person who organized the store must be living in the dark ages. There is no women's, gender, feminism, or sexuality sections in the store. There is one section on "relationships" in which you might find these subjects. I'm sorry, women are not "relationships." Extremely weird and honestly insulting as someone mainly interested in gender, sexuality, and feminism. There are thousands upon thousands of relevant books available in these genres. read more

I love this used book store. The staff are always friendly and helpful. So many wonderful books to choose from the floor to the ceiling. All nicely organized. They have limited edition books, signed author books, collectible books and of course just normal books. I always come here first when in search of a book. They have a sign that they trade books but I never have looked into this feature. read more

this bookstores stock is one of the best I have ever seen. No paperback shack, he had unusual history books, science books, and his employee (and the owner) are quite helpful. Do not miss this place if you are being a tourist in the area. or are just driving to Canada or points south. Easton's Books has been a fixture in Mount Vernon for as long as I have lived here, over 20 years. Their old store on the revetment was replaced when they moved into the new location across from the Lincoln Theater. The selection is very broad and the conditions of the books is outstanding, very little in the way of heavily worn or trash books. The prices are reasonable to me, but I collect Automobile and Aircraft books so YMMV. The employees are friendly, and Dave the owner is a real kick to chat with. The store layout promotes getting lost and losing track of time, and that's why I go back. They encourage you to walk thru the store and explore it. This place is a larger store than most, If I had to guess, maybe north of 4000 sq ft. This makes it a destination store in my mind. Half Price Books in Everett WA does not have the depth of subject matter that Dave has amassed just to give you a point of comparison. Dave buys books, but not every day, he posts a buying books or not buying books today sign on the door. You might call ahead if you are selling some. When I've sold books he has seemed quite fair with what I am paid for them..... WELL WORTH THE TRIP, except during Tulip Festival when the traffic and parking anywhere in the valley is truly miserable.............. read more

Easton's is a veritable gold mine of quality books. Every book in the shop seems desirable as the proprietor acquires only the best books. Stacks are a mile high. I've enlarged my library with scores of great finds, most of which were reasonably priced. The better books are not locked up either - one can handle them readily without a lot of trouble. The owner, Dave, is quite loquacious and discourses well on numerous topics, especially philosophy and history. Had I an endless supply of cash it would be hard to leave the shop without exhausting it all. The store is situated in downtown Mt. Vernon on First St., itself an attractive avenue. Even with Seattle just down the Interstate I'd have to rate Easton's as the finest bookstore in a 100 mile radius. read more

The store is nicely organized and the inventory is fine, but the owner is rude and appears completely put out if you have to ask a question. This includes phone calls, as we've heard him on the phone many times and couldn't believe how nasty he is. We started going because we like old non-fiction books, and found his prices were fine, a little uneven, but not horrid. We've been disappointed at how seldom he adds to his shelves, with the same old titles in the same spots for the last 2 years. There's also some funny gaps in the inventory, the selection of hardback mysteries is almost non existent for instance. If you don't care about customer service at all, I guess you should try it, but I like to give my money to nice people! read more
