Go for the vinyl....stay to pet the cats. I can only go every few weeks now but before COVId, I hit the shop weekely while downtown getting a sandwhich at the CoOp to check the new arrivals even before they get priced and on the shelf. If you dont see what you want or if the item isnt the grade you want...just ask. They'll have it somewhere or know who has it. The grades of records go from playable but rough covers to collector grade, so they hit all price points. When they are well stocked, its not uncommon to find multplie copies of an album with prices from a few bucks to $20...and he's probably got a primo copy somewhere, some ungraded ones waiting to be logged in, and a trashed version for free out in the boxes out front. I even check the free box outside for covers in better condition than one in my collection or for missing liner notes, etc. They guys are a wealth of knowledge. Just ask. They'll straight up tell you if the albumn is a first pressing, a re-issue, a bootleg, etc. They love music....and cats. read more

I was in the area exploring some of the other nearby shops. I was interested to check out their vinyl selection so I popped in to see what they had. I was hoping to find any reggae or roots artists, but they have a limited selection of these genres. However, they have a wide selection of country, folk, rock, classical, and of the like genres. The staff were friendly and offering to help me search for any genre or artist I was looking for. I quickly thumbed through the Caribbean selection and bought two vinyls. Each was $5, so I thought that was a score. They also have a box of free vinyls outside you can rummage through. read more

I detoured off of I-5 from Bellingham to check out Lost in the Groove in Mount Vernon (3/30/25). It was crowded on this late Sunday afternoon and had a decent overhead music track playing during this visit. Retail formats included used vinyl LPs, 45s, and CDs (rock, folk, jazz, country, foreign, compilations) and some DVDs towards the back. I did not look closely if there were cassettes, other accessories, and other featured genres. Decent for a quick look-see for me, didn't buy anything though. Nice to see a vintage reel to reel towards the front of the shop too. read more

Great little record shop in Mt Vernon! Some of the records are definitely in rough shape, but there are good ones to be found too. Generally they are priced accordingly, but it's always a best to check the vinyl before buying. Some albums I don't care if they're a little noisy, and some I want to be pristine. Spent about 90 minutes looking through their selection and came away with some nice additions to the collection. They're heavy on the rock and country classics, but also have a variety mixed in. They apparently have some cats roaming around but I didn't get any kitty interactions unfortunately. The upstairs area (housing 8-tracks) and bathroom are totally trashed. Will definitely stop by again next time I'm in the area! read more

We found the store during our vacation trip to Camano Island. We decided to come in after we saw a few boxes with vinyl records for free by the shop door. The store is a paradise for people who love and value music. We had a dream to have a vinyl recorder at our home. Larry was kind and very helpful assisting us to find a good set to have a possibility to listen to the music with a vinyl recorder at home. He prepared and checked everything for us. Lost in the Groove is one of the treasures of downtown Mount Vernon. There have been music shops in downtown MV in the past, used record stores, but none of them had nearly the selection and the cool vibe that Lost in the Groove has. Every time I shop here I find exactly what I am looking for, and the prices are reasonable. I have even found a couple of cassettes to play in my old car, which actually still has a cassette player. Most of the fun shops in downtown Mount Vernon are gone, but there are still a couple that I frequent when I am in town, Lost in the Groove is one of them. Oh, and I love love the cats!!! read more

What a place. Got a record player recently and ordered a few records online but nothing compares to buying them in person. If you're in the area, I recommend this place highly. Super friendly staff, welcoming environment and their mascot, a 7-toed orange cat, will greet you at the door. If you are looking for literally any genre in any form; Record players, Speakers, Vinyls in multiple sizes, DVD's, CD's, and many others. There are genres from Beethoven, to Bowie, to the Blues. Their prices don't make you feel like you can only buy one item. We were able to feel satisfied with our new collection without completely breaking the bank. Larry, the wonderful gentleman there made us feel so welcome by making conversation, and knowing exactly where everything is. If you aren't coming for the music, come for the experience. i've known Scott for yrs now and absolutely love his store. it's unlike any used record store i've ever been to. Packed with dvds, cds, stereo equipment along with a most amazing vinyl collection, it comes with 2 cats, lots of vintage and new music artist/concert posters covering the walls (and dust!!) scott has a dry sense of humor and, although he can come across as "grumpy", he's just one big teddy bird once you get to know him. he has always been a person i just enjoy being around and shooting the shit with. i always walk out of there happy and satisfied. turning 180, i found a couple of huge bags of cassette tapes - don't have player anymore) - sure brought back memories - and on a whim, i called him to see if would buy them. unbelievably, he did. not a ton of money but sure beat throwing them out or just leaving in the attic. i can hardly wait to see the new store once it's all together. his store is one of the ONLY reasons i ever go downtown! If you're into vinyl at all, you owe it to yourself to spend some time in this store. I check out the record stores in every town I visit, and Lost in the Groove is one of the biggest (positive) surprises I've encountered anywhere. Their jazz section (my interest) is not huge, but the quality blew my mind - as did the prices. Where else would you find 20 different George Shearing discs in perfect shape for between $3 and $10? Amazing. The rock section is huge and they have more 45's than anyplace I've seen. This is a BIG store and it's well organized. Plus the staff is great: as an out of towner they made me feel right at home. Note that all of their inventory is used; they do not carry new releases. read more

This business sold me a faulty Turntable. Tried to work with owner Scott for a mutual outcome. Told him RCA cable is bad ... got the run around... l always try to support local businesses.. even though in this case Amazon would have been far easier. In the end... I gave up. While Lost in the Groove hosts a ton of vinyl. The condition and look of most of the LP's and 45's makes them look as if they were Good Will rejects. It might be a good idea to stop taking on stock and spending some time cleaning the ones he has. read more

For those like me who remember when listening to music was something you took part in rather than sucking 5,000 songs off the internet with the touch of a finger then this place is for you. Remember when you would sit and listen to a whole album back in the day, as it plays you look at the album cover over and over. It's hard to explain the joy that can be had by playing something like Captain Fantastic while looking at that album cover and picking out things missed the last time you listened to it. Nothing that can be done with a tiny little CD that's for sure.Record stores are like book stores, they are disappearing and its a shame because easy and convenient isn't always better, clicking a mouse on an MP3 is nowhere near as satisfying as the whole journey to a record shop and this little store is a must visit destination. If your new to vinyl you owe it to yourself to see what all us old timers are fussing about. :) This shop is great, you walk in and its like stepping back in time. It isn't a shop of antiques that happens to have a few records, its records..thousands of em. records, CDs cassettes, 8-tracks...yeah baby 8-tracks! They have vintage stereo gear too. Sweet relics from the heyday of hi-fi. kid in a candy store....that's what I am every time I am there. Everyone is friendly, stuff is well marked and you can bring back a record that skips. The prices aren't bad at all, quite fair, certainly far better than some I have been in down south. Like another reviewer said, if music means something special to you then please support this business, keep it growing this is something a town like Mt Vernon is lucky to have. I live an hour south and all I have is the hope of finding a sort of playable record at the goodwill so show some love if you are in the area! read more

Visited this store from WAY out of town (Michigan) while in the area on a business trip. Lost In The Groove has an outstanding selection of used records from the vinyl era (1950s thru 80s) at terrific prices. Most are $3-$5. Some bigger names and better copies will run a little more, but I found the prices to be very affordable. And don't miss their stellar inventory of 45s! Most impressive to me was how organized everything was. Most records were in chronological order by artist in the bins. That has to take a lot of work to maintain. Hats off to these guys for running such a nice store. I visit to record stores all over the country, and this was quite a nice surprise. read more
