After narrowing down the type of shoe I wanted, I set out to find the nearest retailer for this specific shoe. I came across this cycling studio that carried it and communicated with the owner on stock and availability via email. I finally made it out today and Kelly was the most pleasant person to work with. She helped me find the correct size, installed the cleats and gave me tips on correct sizing on cycling shoes vs athletic shoes and how to place/install/adjust cleats. Kelly walked me through an intro class - which gave me the rundown of what I would expect during a full length class. She also instructed me on how to adjust the bike to what was comfortable for me. Also: 1) theme days, yes, Beyoncé and Boy Bands 2) filtered water station 3) towels are provided - an improvement would be unscented 4) different price packages for your workout needs Locally owned, warm instructors, spacious, naturally lit and hip environment. But there's just something about this particular studio on the northwestern end of the island that brings me back everytime... Maybe it's the fact that it's one of the more spacious studios in the East Bay. Maybe it's the ample parking spots, as it's located in the Alameda Landing shopping center. Where you can also get groceries and Chipotle or Jamba Juice after a workout. Or maybe...it's the entire staff at this location that keeps me coming back. The energy, playlists and theme workouts that Mikey, Katie, Sarah, Nik, and Alliah bring. The helpfulness of the SAs, particularly Josie and Kristin! Whatever it is, this studio is pretty awesome.

The only reason I didn't immediately sign on the dotted line is that the alameda tube closure adds ten minutes to my drive. If you're looking for an OTF to call home, definitely consider this one!

Harbor Bay Club is not low priced, but it is worth every penny. It looks like a country club. It…read morehas a huge outdoor pool with 6 lap lanes, tennis courts and pickle ball courts. There is an outdoor hot tub. In the women and in the men's locker rooms there is another hot tub, sauna and steam bath. The locker room is constantly being cleaned, by the hard working staff. There are hair dryers and plastic bags to put your cosmetics in. I use the elliptical machine every time. The room with elliptical machines, stair climbing machine and tread mills looks out over a grassy field , the pool and then the estuary. The club was open during the pandemic because the club designed a way to have air circulating throughout. There are tropical plants inside the club. I like to do Pilates and yoga and there are always rooms available. There are many classes here, Pilates, reformer, yoga etc. There are a lot of rules for this club, which I find refreshing. You will not see anyone filming themselves for TikTok here. That is not allowed. The people are friendly and extremely polite and considerate. The young people at the front desk are always helpful and friendly. It is a very positive Alameda vibe.

A key factor of whether you will stick with an exercise program is the having a frictionless environment. Truve has validated parking at the Hive so you do not have to be driving around in circles trying to figure out where you can park safely and get into the class on time. When you walk in through the front doors, the vibe is very chill so you do not feel anxious walking into class. Most importantly, the other people working in the gym are extremely supportive and will become your community quickly. Having all these things in place makes a fitness routine so much easier to establish. There are even free community classes if that's how you prefer to give this place a try. The instructors are excellent. Classes are capped at 10 for general fitness classes, and three for Pilates. As a result, their instructors can give you abundant corrections and attention so you avoid injuries and develop great form. If you are worried that you don't know how to use a Pilates Reformer, you can hire a private trainer for three classes to learn the ropes like I did. This is the premier gym in Oakland for rehabilitation from injuries. I am a 7 year cancer survivor who has had numerous surgeries. Each time, I've had to fight back to regain my health, strength and flexibility. My last surgery was major, set me back the farthest, and happened during the height of the pandemic; recovery felt close to impossible until I walked through these doors. Not only have I converted fat into muscle, lost weight, gotten so much stronger and gained so much range of motion over 5 months, but I can keep trying new things like TRX Bootcamp that turned out to be fun. Truve's got a wide range of things you can try to keep from being bored. Also, you can go buy fresh baked bread and pastries at Firebrand Artisan Bakery next store or empanadas at Javi's Empanadas caddy corner after you finish your workout. Truve's location is fabulous.

What I like most about these classes is that they always offer an option with some at home equipment if you have it (bands, weights, chairs, balls, etc) or alternative options if you don't have these things. I personally prefer full-body days but I also enjoy showing up to class not knowing what to expect. That element of surprise keeps you on your toes. There are bathrooms by the Redwood Bowl but we couldn't find any helpful maps so just used our phones to navigate. The trail we ended up taking was around 4 miles and took 2 hours. Most of it was shaded and among redwood trees so I really enjoyed that this could work as an afternoon hike. It's a moderate difficulty level with some steep areas. There's also a popular picnic area with grills and an archery range. You could even walk to the nearby swimming pool or visit the Chabot. We only did one half of the hiking loop so will be back to check out the other side.

What the what?? 0_o So, that's on me, kids. My bad. Onto the review... A giant ±1,833-acre redwood forest nestled in the Oakland Hills, this park was a former logging site back in the 1800s. Fortunately, there has been a nice resurgence of redwoods to replace those that were cut down. It ain't old-growth, but we'll take what we can these days. The Good: * Free at certain times of year and at certain entrances (more below) * Mountain biking on certain trails (check map and trail signage) * Horseback riding on certain trails (check map and trail signage) * Camping available (check website for info and reservations) * Reservable and non-reservable picnic tables (check map & website) * Restrooms available in parking lots, as well as at some campsites * Nearly forty miles of trails with something for everyone * If you're looking for a moderate ±4.5-mile loop, go to the Skyline entrance and take the Serpentine Prairie Trail to Dunn Trail to Golden Spike Trail, then back to Dunn Trail The Meh: * $5/vehicle entrance fee on weekends and major holidays between April and October, only at the Redwood Gate entrance * Most of the trails are pretty decent, but some are in rough shape due to water damage The Ugly: * One of the few parks I've seen with "off-leash" sections for dogs--which is fine, except you know there's a good majority of dog owners who think they can control their dogs but really can't. We saw a panicked guy chasing his dog down a trail at one point, and who knows when--if ever--he caught up to it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Conclusion: Great park with tons of trails and lots to see and do.

This was definitely the place to be back in the day! Parking was a snap and we found a bench to sit on starting the water watching. The view was awesome and the sun was shining just like Bob Marley said. There were people, young and old playing in the sand, lots of bike riders, and of course, those dog walkers. The Teen put the phone down and ventured out and some sand, touching and driftwood drifting.. Definitely, we will be back when it gets warmer with hopes of finding front row parking again!

My son attended Bonnie's bike camp 2 summers ago before starting middle school. He bikes across the island in traffic every day to get to school, usually bikes to soccer practice after, and still loves to ride on weekends. He learned a valuable life skill at bike camp that goes beyond just riding safely. He has a greater awareness of himself, car and pedestrian traffic and his home town. He loves the freedom he has to get himself places and takes to heart the responsibility of that too. I appreciate that he has learned from certified instructors how to be safe and visible especially since he will have biked nearly 1100 miles each year for the last 2 years. His sister will be going to bike camp this summer before she starts middle school. Biking by yourself is a part of growing up and I am so glad as a parent that Easy Street Cycling offers training for kids this age to safely do just that. read more

Thank you, thank you, thank you East Street Cycling! Bonnie was instrumental in giving our son independence. He has become an excellent, confident, aware rider because of the skills he learned in his summer camp. Bonnie provided him with a fundamental knowledge base which he uses on a daily basis as he rides to school. A few months ago, our son and I went on a group bike ride with other kids. He was the only one who truly knew the rules of the road, and followed them! As a parent, I love being able to ask our son to run errands for me, take himself to events and generally be more self-reliant. I also appreciated Bonnie's honest feedback about our son's behavior during camp, and her ability to communicate with us about the skills in which he still needed work. My daughter attended Bonnie's Street Skills I Camp in anticipation of starting 6th grade at Lincoln Middle School, and she attended the session with friends. Bonnie helped my daughter and her friends practice their route to LMS, and they have really enjoyed riding to and from school together. I would highly recommend Bonnie's camps, especially for students going into middle school. The camp gives them great confidence, not only on the road but also as a common experience as they enter middle school. Our family has all learned how to bike more safely as a result of our daughter attending Bonnie's camp. Bonnie is an outstanding teacher and so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about biking! read more

My daughter attended a week-long bike camp the summer before heading to Middle School and absolutely loved both the camp experience AND the expertise she gained being there. She has been growing more independent (in a good way!) and having the skills and confidence to be able to ride her bike to school and rehearsal has been a critical part of this growth. I'd have to say that if you have a middle-school aged child and live in Alameda (or any nearby community for that matter), that attending a camp or taking a class from Easy Street Cycling is an absolute must. We are so fortunate to have someone like Bonnie teaching these kids how to be safe and lawful out there on two wheels! read more

Bike Camp with Bonnie? YES, DO IT! It's a win-win-win. Your kid wins because they get to go to BIKE CAMP! How fun is that?! You win because you get to relax a bit about your kid street riding - which we all want kids to do, but aren't so sure how safe it is. And, the community wins because there are more kids out there setting a great example by riding predictably/safely and sharing their knowledge with their friends. Bonnie is not only an excellent teacher and encyclopedia of safety and skills tips, she is also a fun mom. This is a perfect camp for kids in the middle school years (even if they already think they know how to follow the rules of the road)! Not only do they learn to ride safely, and on public transportation, but the camp itself is super fun. So many creative, interesting, and fun activities for this age group! I would strongly suggest having your child take both levels 1 and 2 so they get the full benefit of the experience and a lot more practice. They even learn to change flat tires and use a map to find the best routes around Alameda. Our daughter is now much more confident and we are happy to send her out on her own. read more

My son Jonah took this summer class to prep him to ride to middle school. He loved it, rode so much that we had to get him new tires by end of week and he and we feel confident in his riding skills. He now rides his bike to and from school each day. If it rains, he knows how to put his bike on the front of a city bus and ride home. He knows fundamentals on how to lock his bike correctly, how to ride with traffic, how to signal and be assertive. He leads his friends that didn't take the class. I'm thrilled and would recommend this camp or classes to anyone! read more

My daughter did the basic cycling camp last summer and she loved it. She learned a lot of practical skills about safe riding, locking up her bike, and practiced lots of situations she will encounter riding on her own. As a parent I loved the great feedback I got about her abilities, including what she should work on to be a safer and more confident rider. She is really excited to go back for two weeks of bike camp this summer, including adventure call where she can rely push her skills and go lots of fun places. My son was one of the first students (almost 7 years ago) Bonnie had when she started teaching children Bike Safety. I watch many young people (and adults) riding on the road and cringe at how dangerous they look. Bonnie teaches how to ride safely, what are the hidden dangers and how to navigate and avoid those dangers. I feel confident of my son's ability to ride on the road due to all he learned with Bonnie! Many think it's not worth their child attending and PAYING for a bike safety program - they could not be more wrong. read more

My son attended a week long bike camp prior to starting middle school and it was great! Prior to this neither he nor I knew many of the rules of the road. After he was teaching me both as a driver and a bike rider! Bonnie is a patient and knowledgable instructor who knows how to connect with kids and make learning fun. Bonnie is the real deal. She connects with kids at their appropriate age level, and is more passionate about bike safety than anyone. Ever. He learned a lot of important road safety skills, and the whole family learned from this as well. My Grandkids got a lot from Bonnie's class. She makes it fun and at the same time teaches the kids how to be safe on city streets and know the rules of the road. They don't need to be driven everywhere when they can bike to most places in Alameda with confidence- and you don't have to worry. Our son has taken several classes from Bonnie and participated in a week-long summer camp under her leadership. His skill level increased and he feels much more comfortable on a bike. Bonnie, Is a terrific bike safety teachers. She is patient with kids and adults. Here style is easy going, but she knows when to emphasize the important stuff. Take a class from her and you WILL learn things you didn't know before. read more

They have been extremely accommodating of my slow to warm kiddo while also knowing just when to push so that she could demonstrate the independence that she is capable of. They take the time to ensure each child is having fun and also challenged based on their ability in a safe and age appropriate way. I've also enjoyed getting to know the parents and feel like it's an overall fun vibe at Park Gymnastics. If you are having difficulty signing up don't give up. In fact send Coach Anne an email - that's what I did and I got a heads up about sign ups and it has been well worth it. Bottom line small class sizes, personalized attention, kind community and lots of fun.

They enjoyed spending the week outdoors, at the park and in the camp's backyard. From what they told me about their days (which is never much), they played a lot of group games, and enjoyed the trampoline and feeding the animals. She had tried Monkey Business Camp last summer but she did not like the unstructured free play time as she did not go with a friend. With Avid4Adventure Oakland, she went without knowing anyone and enjoyed every single moment of the five days outdoor adventures (biking, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and stand up paddle boarding). She loved the fact that they had to take a van to go offsite (eg: Berkeley Aquatic Park for water sports, etc). They also have yoga, art, music, etc. We were worried because she could not bike without training wheels but the instructors helped her and at the end of the day, our daughter was very proud of her biking skills! She always looks forward to next day's activity. They emphasize recycling and the love for our environment during camp, so much so that after attending Avid4Adventure, our daughter checks on us when we have trash at home to make sure we are recycling 100%. Even the tiniest scrap paper and snack bags must be recycled!!! Think TerraCycle. Great first time exposure to sports adventure and spending time outdoors with fun instructors!

I have two issues with Oaktown Boulders: communication and organization. It was impossible to get a…read morehold of them by email or phone to sign my daughter up, so we drove there and showed up to talk to someone. I signed my daughter up for a class, and after she attended one session (and after getting her excited about climbing), they emailed me to say they messed up, and the class was full. So they cancelled her enrollment and gave me a partial refund. Totally unacceptable! My daughter was so disappointed. After that experience, we joined another climbing gym and asked Oaktown Boulders to take us off their email list. They have literally emailed me half a dozen times, promoting new classes and letting me know about openings. EVERY SINGLE TIME, I ask them to remove me from their email list! No response. Also, unacceptable! Get your sh*t together, Oaktown Boulders!

It is exciting to see the growth that they have achieved over the past couple of years and moving locations, hiring/training new staff is never easy. Yet, in addition to wanting this confidence boosting and camaraderie building experience for my kid it matters to me to give my money to a place also working to do good in our community. During the school…read moreyear, I teach art and yoga, so getting outside and exploring the Bay with a bunch of energetic, curious kids is such a refreshing change of pace. There's nothing like teaching them how to paddle or kayak and seeing their faces light up when they get the hang of it--or when they inevitably start a splash fight! This job is the perfect mix of fun, nature, and getting kids to unplug and just be kids. Whether we're paddling, playing games, or just soaking up the outdoors, it's so cool to watch them connect with the world around them and with each other. If you love working with kids and want to spend your summer outside (seriously, what's better than sunshine and water?), Gaia Guides is the place to be. When I signed my kids up, I added that I had a few concerns since my kids have special needs, and the staff were very understanding and communicative. My kids had a great time here--they baked, did arts and crafts, baked, etc. The camp is located across the street from a park, so they had plenty of outside time. After the camp ended, I even received a Google photo album with pictures of my kids. Really appreciate the extra touch!

Since we had just moved, we were unable to find somewhere to take him which is initially why we opted for Kids Elite because they had a space for him. What a stroke of luck! He is a big lover of science and art and has flourished with the help of the attentive staff. He comes home every day so excited to tell us all about the project he completed that afternoon. Even though he is one of the younger kids at the school, he has formed friendships with all of the kids, even the older ones. The staff really strives for kindness and respect as a pillar of their program and it shows. They also do an excellent job of communicating how the students are doing and even go above and beyond customizing some of the curriculum based on kids' interests. If we had to do it over again, we'd choose Kids Elite again in a heartbeat. We truly could not recommend them enough.

He really struggled at a previous camp but things were so different at Jumpin Gymsters. Carol, Carlos and the other staff members really helped him to feel safe and keep him happy and engaged. He had so much fun, he didnt want to leave at the end of the day. They really helped build his social confidence as well and he made a lasting friend there that summer. We had such a great experience with them that we decided to hire them for my son's sixth birthday party (which went really well) and also sent all three of our kids to some 2024 summer sessons. I can't recommend them enough!
