This incredible food stall at Sunday UpMarket at the Old Truman Brewery is one of the coolest ideas ever. Andy, the super nice guy who runs the stall, makes 'retro British delicacies' like scotch eggs and pork pies that are out-of-this-world delicious. They're traditional food, but made with a thoughtful modern sensibility rather than the overprocessed, overmanufactured crap that's often pumped out in the guise of 'food' these days, Andy pays an immense amount of attention to the ingredients and the production behind his food - it's simple food but made with love and serious attention to detail.
I had an absolutely incredible rare roast beef sandwich topped with this fantastic homemade horseradish cream sauce. But get this - the bread was a Yorkshire Pudding roll stuffed with all the ingredients: a Yorkshire pud bap. WTF? A pud bap? I am now speaking a new language of food.
I also had my first Scotch egg, which has obviously ruined me for all Scotch eggs for eternity. A perfectly boiled egg (not overcooked and dry) surrounded by a pork mince with lots of spices and then covered in a brown wholemeal breadcrumb crust. Dipped into english mustard and a bit of homemade salad cream, it is a crazy weird bite of awesome. For those of you not familiar with Scotch eggs, or only familiar with the nasty service station version of the Scotch egg, go visit Andy and let him school you.
I was so eager to try the traditional versions that I didn't have room in my stomach for the wild fusion stuff Andy dreams up in that culinary brain. Get this - he does Scotch eggs with Thai red curry, Mexican three bean, and smoked haddock. All have their own particular breadcrumb outer crust to best highlight their delicious insides. Yum yum yum.
Check out his website for locations, looks like he's at the Brick Lane Upmarket on the weekends and the Whitecross Street Market on Thursday and Friday.
Andy also has cakes for dessert. Andy is also very friendly. Go Eat My Pies! I mean his pies. They should be my pies. THEY WILL BE MY PIES... read more
