The atmosphere was relaxed, the people were friendly, and nobody seemed to be in a hurry--which is exactly how things ought to be in Barnwell. A few tables over, problems were being solved, fish were getting bigger with every retelling, and at least one expert was explaining how he could have coached the Gamecocks to a winning season if only they'd asked. It had that comfortable hometown feel where everybody either knows your name or knows somebody who does. Good food, cold drinks, friendly faces, and enough local storytelling to qualify as an oral history project. If you're looking for fancy, keep driving. Desserts included banana pudding, red velvet cake, and a Lane cake. Everyone in our party had the fried chicken although a few samples the fried fish. It was all very tasty and fresh. Between eight of us, we tried everything and all was declared delicious. We didn't get a chance to get seconds because the church folks showed up in droves and the line was out the door! The ambiance was nice and the waitresses checked on us and refilled our drinks regularly although they were very busy.
