A Sad Decline from a Local Legend…read more Carolina BBQ used to be the place. Back in the day, everyone knew about it -- people would drive from all over just to get a plate. Now? I wouldn't drive across the street for it. The food has lost every bit of the flavor that made it famous. The BBQ is bland, fatty, and feels like it's been sitting around waiting for someone to remember what seasoning is. The potato salad? Completely flavorless -- someone forgot that mustard exists. And the hush puppies, once crispy little bites of heaven, now taste like fried bread that gave up halfway through. And all that grease makes it slide right thru. It's honestly sad to see a local legend fall this far. The place that used to set the standard for good southern BBQ now feels like it's coasting on nostalgia alone. My daughter and I drove up their driveway sort of impulsively when we were driving through the area hungry and reading Yelp reviews. We ordered our sandwiches from a window that looked like it was their back patio. This take out only restaurant was busy and the patrons were both white and black- a rare sight at restaurants in probably more progressive Charleston- we also had tea (32 oz serving even though we ordered the 'small' which is 16 oz!) and pineapple cake. We ate in our car. It was delicious. Next time I will get the plate so I can try the rice and hash. Check it out but keep in mind they are only open on Saturdays (11 am to 7 pm)- cash only- don't miss out. Bobby and Dixie have been serving their delicious food since 1986 (36 years!!) and B&D Bar-B-Que is not going to be here forever.

A massive tray of mac & cheese, golden fried chicken, barbecue chicken, and pulled pork that looked like it had been tended with care. Oh, my. Off to the side sat squeeze bottles of sauce and ketchup, flanked by potato salad, cole slaw, and two varieties of pickles that added a crisp counterpoint to the richness of the meats. I ate far more than I intended, but every bite was worth it. The mac & cheese was excellent, very cheesy and full of flavor. Maybe not quite as good as when Mrs. K. blesses me with her recipe, but still, excellent. The barbecue chicken was moist and seasoned just right. The pulled pork was some of the best I have had, with a few larger pieces mixed in that gave it texture and depth. It was so good it really didn't need any sauce at all. If desserts were offered, I didn't see them. A small scoop of banana pudding would have tied the whole experience together in a perfect knot. Even without it, this was a five-star meal in my book.
