Juan and Sonia the owners are from Columbia (and happen to by my neighbours) and have worked hard to create a delicious menu that has a different take on the regular cafe fare. Their shining glory however is the Friday night Tapas menu. All the food is expertly prepared by Chef Sonia, the South American flare that they have put in the menu is delicious. Pork belly, empanadas, spicy prawns, there is nothing you won't be able to find to whet your appetite. And if you're not sure Juan will pick out a menu for you based on everyone's different tastes. Service can get a little slow on Friday nights as it's usually packed out, so you may need to be prepared for a long dinner. But with the right bottle of wine and the constant flow of delicious tapas that shouldn't be a problem!

Nursing a slight hangover I was keen for a good ol' big breakfast (with GF toast) and that's just what I got. As well as a relaxed, casual atmosphere, friendly, helpful, fast service, AND they were playing Bee Gees. Perfect tunes to ease into a sunny Saturday! ABSOLUTELY NOT. Do…read morenot go here. The food is not fresh, frozen and probably not safe to eat. To start any place with the manic misogynistic decorations should be an immediate red flag. Unicycle, posters about nagging wife, tanks from a motor cycle other random assorted junk and posters with no cohesive theme or vision. It screams lazy owner/operator who needed to decorate it so they went to a garage sale or a 2nd hand junk store and slapped trash on the wall to call it good enough. All of this would be excusable IF the food was good. Which I was not. They were strangely overstaffed but they looked irritated to see us walk in. The food looks nothing like the pictures. We had the civiche, the grilled scallops and the garlic prawns. The civiche was prepared improperly and we were scared to eat it. There was ZERO citrus so immediately we knew not a civiche. It was thin long sashimi slices of fish served with the slightest few drops of what I would say as a watery cilantro liquid, a chimichuri ordered from wish or Temu if you will. The fish smelled a little but we chalked it up to clearly being frozen. We ate it and the best I can say is we didn't get sick. The prawns were clearly frozen from a bag psychotically over cooked with the consistency of a old leather shoe. They tasted of nothing but were....edible. The problem and when we gave up and left was the grilled scallops. The first plate of scallops they brought us didn't look right upon inspection they were completely raw and uncooked never touched a grill or hot surface, stone cold. When we brought this to the servers attention he was clearly pretty upset with us for complaining. He took away the plate of raw and later brought back another plate of scallops which did have color from cooking but the smell of it was clear these previously frozen scallops had turned and they had turned a while ago. When we cut into them they were stringy and mushy as if they had started to rot. We each tried a bite and immediately had to spit it out as the fish was clearly bad to the point it left a singing bitter fishy foul flavor on the pallet. We asked for the check and to have the scallops removed from the bill. The server refused to remove the scallops because they prepared it twice for us AS IF THAT WASNT THEIR MISTAKE. We explained they tasted foul and clearly expired at best. He pointed to another table insisting we couldn't be correct because that couple ate the same scallops (Thoughts and prays to thar couple) as if that meant anything. We had a brief discussion where we explained we were from a beach town had eaten scallops our whole lives and knew what they should look, feel and taste like and he stated he wasn't the owner and they made us two plates and he was doing us a favor by not double charging us for them. I think he could see how upset we were and by that point we had attracted the attention of some other patrons. He discounted us $10 but that was only 1/2 the cost of the scallops.

I recently stumbled upon Urban Bites, a friendly restaurant with a neighbourhood feel that has attentive staff and a menu serving tasty eats in generous portions. The spot serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and coffee, with a full alcohol bar. The dessert case is absolutely amazing, featuring everything from cakes and tarts, to pastries. Definitely save room for a tasty treat. I was there for dinner and opted for a delicious grilled haloumi burger with rocket and olive tapenade on Turkish toast ($17.90 AUD). It was served with thickly cut chips and was so huge, I had to take half of it home. The bread was perfectly crispy, there was a ton of haloumi, and the veggies were plentiful. The fish and chips burger with sweet potato fries was equally massive. Though all the cheesecake and tiramisu made my mouth water, I gave something I've never tried a taste, pavlova. I had no idea the dessert was born in the Australia/New Zealand region, which is awesome, but it just looked so gosh darned pretty, I felt it would be a dream to eat. It's a meringue-based cake that was topped with cream. I'm not the hugest meringue fan, but it was sweet and light, and the cream was amazing. I'm sure it was a great version of the dessert, and its elegance evokes the beauty of the Russian ballerina the dessert was named after. From start to finish, the meal at Urban Bites was fantastic. I loved that my meal was enough to take half of it home, the servers were courteous, and the whole atmosphere is fun and laid-back.

We normally eat only at venues that accept the Entertainment Book coupons, but we're happy to pay full price at Urban Bites (although they also accept the aforementioned coupon). Tip: go early on Saturday and Sunday mornings and stay under an hour to get free parking directly outside on the street.
