We had high hopes for Ebel's Tavern. The advertised list of craft beers and gastro-pub menu, plus our need to escape the repetition of our own small-town's restaurant offerings put us on the road for a 35 minute drive with minimal expectations for an enjoyable meal. Admittedly, we came early on New Year's eve, and they were mostly focused on the expected late evening celebrating crowd, but the kitchen was pretty much out of everything that could've been worth the drive during the first round of dinner customers. The required ingredients (asparagus, uncle ben's rice, etc...) are easily obtainable. The first 2 sides on the menu we ordered? "We're out of that." The first 2 beers we ordered from the beer list on the wall? "We're out of that." Okay, take your eraser and fix the chalkboard beer list. Go to a grocery store if your supplier didn't deliver. Considering we were among the first to arrive for dinner, this was pretty disappointing, and a little sad. After striking out on the first 2 sides I ordered, the server refused my counter-offer of the fried pickles from the appetizer menu. I pointed her to the manager/owner and he approved my request. We really tried to like Ebel's. The Guinness draft I ordered for dessert was appropriately poured, and in a very nice Guinness glass; the highpoint of my first and last visit. If you live in the area and can make a few visits, I have a feeling, on average, this is a good place to eat, but don't go out of your way. read more

We came here for the advertised "Soup and Salad Month" only to find out that the soup wasn't done at 11:30 AM.. the day after they had advertised "Soup and Salad Month". I had heard that they constantly run out of items so I guess they were just out of potatoes or something. Our service was terrible. Took us an hour and a half for lunch service. (We had to call our boss and say we would be late returning from lunch.) I believe it was our servers first day or something and she was trying her hardest but our drinks wouldn't stay full. They need bigger glasses. It was also about 65 degrees inside and 20 degrees outside so we were freezing the whole time. Oh and an hour and a half later the soup still wasn't done. Didn't think soup took that long to prepare. I have them two stars simply because the food we ordered was great when we finally got it. I hope they can fix the problems they have been having because I would love to give them another try based on their quality of food. The food was pretty good. I got the tuna with side salad and onions & mushrooms. It was cooked perfectly, but had no good seasoning. The sides helped it out. My friend got fried green tomatoes for the table (looooved them!) And a steak wrap with onion rings. The wrap was disappointing. Very little flavor, and a dried out wrap. Small portions we were the only people in restaurant and it took over an hour. Hamburger meat was large with no seasoning when asked for salt never got any two soft drinks hamburger on sourdough because out of buns husbands chicken dinner was a tiny piece the size of a tenderloin good flavor with about a dozen onion rings ordered pickle chips and didn't even fill a small coffee cup. The atmosphere at Ebel's is very quant and relaxing. We want to provide some constructive feedback on the drinks and food we ordered. We ordered the lobster stuffed mushrooms and Oyster Rockefeller. The mushrooms came out cold and the cheese was very hard from sitting too long. The stuffing would have been really good if they add some more flavorings to it (garlic power, onion power, etc). Oyster spinach sauce tasted llike gravy. The oysters were not baked long enough as they were almost on the raw side. I would suggest experimenting with different sauces to make the spinach sauce more on the bit of tangy side and highly recommend a different cheese (tasted old and not a good favor to it). Beer was warm. We asked the waitress what temp it was at, she said at 38. Should be at least 33-34. Need to have ICE cold mugs for the beer too! This was our first visit however we do plan on coming back as we love the atmosphere and will try other foods. I hope you take us up on suggestions for appetizer improvement's and getting the beer really cold! read more

Went for the reviews but this place is just ok. Ordered drinks, the New York and the cheeseburger. The NY steak was definitely not a NY. It was a prime rib trimmed. Anyone who knows their steak knows a NY is not fatty and as tender as a prime rib. The cheeseburger was just ok. The seasoning was not my preference as it tasted like they added a beer to the meat. They had run out of sweet potatoes fries and their apple cider on tap. This place is really just great for drinks and music. read more

The downside to this restaurant (and the reason it doesn't get 5) is that it is pretty pricey and the food takes quite awhile to get and is delivered cold. well we had the option of either mexican or this cool looking tavern and we shoulda gone with the mexican. when you walk in it looks nice and moody so i'll give them that but that's the end of the good part. we were a group of four, so a relatively small group, but the place is so poorly layed out that we had to be split into pairs in opposite ends of the restaurant. it was fine, we were just hungry. we ordered a small amount of food, just 4 entree's and it took almost an hour to get it out. we could have driven down the road and picked up fast food, ate it, then drove back and sat down and still would have had time to eat. so by the time we got the food, we were SORELY disappointed. 12.99 basket of shrimp, 5 pieces of defrosted shrimp double cooked..... and onion rings done the same way, with almost the same amount. all the food seems to be frozen food cooked twice, and for $13 an average entree you can do MUCH better elsewhere. i think we'll stick with mexican read more

Monday 06/28/21 12:45 pm The blue lights were very off putting for the middle of the day. They weren't none to busy A party of 3 we were greeted immediately. Offered drinks which where served. Not long after another gal come for the order. I wanted my meat cooked rare and said I'd accept med-rare at best. It was cooked medium well and served with a notification that's the did the best they could. HELLO THE BEST YOU CAN DO IS FOR FILL THE CUSTOMER REQUEST Other wise don't offer to ask how you want it cooked. We sat there waiting for the food almost forty minutes. Mind you I said they weren't to busy. Maybe that was a sign! McKenzie was great but the other gals she really didn't give much concern. Hence a she (Told ) me that's the best they can do. I'd say that's just inept. Many people might just disagree however it was my money I paid for the meals. I was not happy with the quality of the food or the atmosphere. I shall never return It's a fancy place alright. Way to slow for my liking. Poor customer service and greatly over rated. Ebels's get one star. Only because there is no lower rating! read more

Was so hopeful for a decent restaurant in Carthage -our experience was horrible from start to finish. Arrived and seated at 6pm and waited TWO HOURS for sandwiches. Items on the order were wrong -cheese added when we said no cheese-fries added when we said no fries etc etc etc. fried shrimp sandwich was cold with three small shrimp on top. Fish sandwich was also cold when served . Probably an ok place to sit and drink if you aren't too hungry and you got a whole lotta time to sit and wait. read more

Was disappointed with so many items "out" we wanted the steak with mashed potatoes but they were out of potatoes ! We order spinach dip and ask for sour cream - they don't have sour cream . First and last time at this restaurant/ tavern for meals. We asked for two different appetizers and they were out. Then we asked for a third and the waitress came back and said they were out. We had reserved 5pm and were the first for the night reservations. We arrived a little early at 440pm. Then ordering our meal, they were out of one item we asked for as well as a side dish we asked for. The food was not really ok. I ordered the blackened snapper, which was still slimy and not blackened at all. When the waitress (Shawna) asked how the food was, and I said something about the snapper being undercooked... she didn't have any reply except to turn abruptly away and go to the kitchen. She did not apologize and never asked how they could make it right. I did not eat it, and she took the plate away and gave us the full price bill without any thought to making a customer happy. The atmosphere was ok. Cute place- not cozy though, very chilly in there. Had to keep coats on to be comfortable ( all others did as well). As other customers came in, the place became loud, and music started, which was a nice touch, but too loud to be able to hold a conversation at 530pm. We are locals for about 3 years, first time there, won't go back mostly due to customer service. read more

This is a hidden gem. We were riding motorcycles through the area and decided to try it. So glad we did. Everyone from the bartender to the chef made sure to personally check on us. There is no drink menu everything is overpriced considering they're serving frozen meals. Fake lobster and the shrimp is tiny, deep-fried and still tastes like the plastic it was frozen in. And apparently 2 shots of liquor will run you about 10 dollars. I ordered the stuffed mushrooms and somehow there was aluminum foil on the bottom of all of them? 4 of them ran us about 13 dollars. Extremely disappointing. Do yourself a favor go to the liquor store and get you a whole bottle for 15 and then stop by Walmart and get yourself a frozen dinner because it will amount to the same experience for a quarter of the price. First and last time going there. If I'm going to pay $100 for disappointing food and drinks I'm gonna go somewhere nicer than a tavern. Drinks are super small by the way. read more

We were referred to Ebel's Tavern by staff at Wildwood resort. Located in Carthage, it was approximately a 20 minute drive. The Tavern is located on a corner in an old brick building, down a flight of stairs. Outdoor seating was available though the weather was too cool for us. The inside was warm with brick walls & a beautiful old bar. A small, cozy restaurant that was respectful of our desire to be safely distanced. This was important to us as no one in the restaurant wore masks. We were greeted & served by delightful staff. With a diverse menu, we asked for recommendations. Hubs & I went with the bourbon glazed salmon, medium rare. It was perfection! We chose side salads which were fresh & beautifully served. Our friends chose the Philly cheese steak which they said was outstanding. Wine & craft beer was reasonably priced with nice selection. We split a slice of carrot cake that was one of the best ever; creamy frosting & very moist flavorful cake. We felt the prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food.
