One of the best things about shopping here on the weekend is their many food sample tables. There…read morewere dumpling samples, beef bulgogi, drinks and more than I really wanted to try. Aisles are always clean. Lots of inventory. Produce is fresh and plentiful. Cashiers are pretty quick.

We didn't buy any because we weren't planning to cook some up any time soon. The second time, we came better prepared. I had a list of ingredients for making a bok choy recipe that we liked. Yes, we did buy the baby bok choy. Also, we found snow peas and shiitake mushrooms. We were quite impressed with the produce section as all their fruits and veggies were fresh and the store was very clean. Even though they weren't part of the recipe, we picked up more manzano bananas. Browsing the aisles, I also found some dried tree ear. One thing we saw that we liked was that they had a couple of aisles dedicated to Hispanic foods with one aisle dedicated to Peruvian foods. We were pleased to see that they had Inca Kola and bought some. For those who cook Indian foods, there is an aisle dedicated to those foods. The cashiers we dealt with were friendly. When the cashier we dealt with on our most recent visit saw that we were buying the Inca Kola and manzano bananas, she asked me in Spanish if I needed a shopping bag. I said, in English, "Yes please" which surprised and amused her. I never did get fully fluent in Spanish thus the reason I answered in English. We both agree that we would come back to shop here when we plan to do Asian cooking. Just note that parking can be tight as it is a popular place. In fact, when we entered the parking lot last visit, 6 cars decided to leave at the same time...yikes!

The staff's service was good, and the prices were reasonable. However, this one has a more outdated feel among the various Giant Food supermarkets I have been to.

I have always trusted the Giant brand, to include the fact it is one of the only union grocery chains left (cue the jingle "look for...the union label). Bonus buys, gas points, online discounts....this place has everything! This is not the fanciest store (or Giant) in the area, but it is the store where I've gotten to know a few of the long time employees, run in to my friends and neighbors and can find most items with a blindfold on (to be clear, I don't advocate shopping with a blindfold on). The prices are always reasonable, the produce and meat are always fresh and you don't have to feel stressed while shopping. During the peak of the pandemic, their curbside pick-up didn't markup the prices (looking at you Wegman's) and the service was amazing. The store is clean, comfortable and well lit. Most customers wear masks (bonus points) and the employees are always friendly and helpful. Having shopped in other "upscale" grocery stores (looking at you Wegman's), the meat prices are among the best around. I never feel like I am being up-sold or tempted to try the newest boutique items. Giant also has a "yellow tag" markdown system for items that are close to expiration, which I appreciate. We have dozens of grocery choices in this area of Fairfax County, but I always come back to the Giant. It's like the old friend that is always there for you when the new friend lets you down.

It was Restaurant Week while I was there, so the 2nd night I tried the flatiron steak and it was fantastic also. Started with an espresso martini, a smoked Old Fashioned, and the fritto misto to share. Everything was really good. Then we split the lamb burger and the shrimp risotto for lunch. Both were excellent, although I think the risotto edged out the burger. Our server Mike made the whole experience. Before he even brought us water, he showed up with a bowl for Onyx. Come on, that's an instant five stars in my book. We ended up talking wine with him for a good part of the afternoon. He had us sample a few different pours before we landed on a Nebbiolo we loved. Later, after another conversation about wine, he brought over a taste of a white we'd never even heard of because he thought we'd enjoy trying it. It never felt like an upsell. It just felt like talking with someone who genuinely enjoys wine and likes sharing it with people. Relaxing patio, great food, excellent cocktails, and genuinely memorable service. We'll definitely be back, and Onyx probably will too.
