This place needs an upgrade. I used to come here all the time growing up, but since it's been plenty of years thought they would do some updating maybe every 20 years??? Not the case here. We bowled here last weekend and it was just a mess. The monitors above where you see and others can see how well or what your score was wasn't even turned on, neither of them. And then on our lane, every time you bowled the first time, the second time your ball would be stuck and you would have to use another persons ball to get yours back up on the rack. Then when it wasn't doing that, it keep reseting the pins full 10, instead of just the ones you didn't knock down. Looks and smells the same as all the other old bowling areas, but the munchkin had fun bowling, thats all the matters at the end of the day.

Ahhh yes Echo Lanes. The go-to for any post-homecomers or prom-ers. i remember bowling in my homecoming dress and thinking it was the craziest thing anyone had ever done! Echo Lanes is a super bowling alley. They've got lots of room and no one ever made fun of me for getting the little kid balls! Of course, it's a bowling alley, so it's got weird flooring and that kind of funny feet/cleaning product to cover the feet smell when you walk in. I can't remember having much other than a soda or two here and those were good...it's soda. So yes. Go bowl here.

Apparently I am now a Michigander who loves huge swaths of Ohio and Ohio foods. That said, I wasn't…read moreborn in Michigan. My roots are shallow. I don't care about sports, and I never studied the great Toledo war. As far as I can tell, we got the UP so even if Ohio won, I figure we still came out ahead? Like I said, I never took a midwest social studies course. In all seriousness, I don't know what is more responsible for bringing me back to Westside Bowl over and over again. It's a pretty close tie between the Brier Hill Pizza and the pinball. Pinball and pizza are two of my favorite things. Plus I love peppers and frankly I'm a big old fan of the Basilicata region in Italy, which incidentally is reported to be the cultural underpinning of Brier Hill Pizza. But that's neither here nor there. I also am a big fan of interesting regional beers. Westside Bowl has those covered, but I'm usually stopping in on a roadtrip and now that I'm old, one beer makes me really really sleepy. So sadly, I usually just look with wistful eyes at the beer list. Fortunately I can console myself with pinball. There's a good selection of machines, and many of them play quite well. The staff has always been lovely. I appreciate the queer friendly signage visible from the very large parking lot. The stage for shows looks freaking awesome. And there is real honest to goodness bowling. Not this gussied up let's-put-big-ass-tv-screens-over-the-lanes-for-the-add-set bowling. I don't know who put all of these things together into one old building, but whoever they are, they should be awarded a Nobel prize. It's flipping genius. The locals of Youngstown are fortunate to have a place like this. I hope the appreciate it and understand just how lucky they are. If only the kitchen staff could work on making a dynamite sauerkraut ball, I woudln't be tempted to skip Youngstown for an occasional dalliance to Akron. And for that matter, perhaps they might consider dialing in a cold cheese pizza, to keep me from visits to the Ohio valley.
