We had a fun and safe time with our guides, Chris, Ozzie, and Alex. Our kayak tour went from 6-8pm and included a sunset paddle through mangroves and quiet time under the stars in the bioluminescent bay. Due to a recent "cold" front in PR, the plankton weren't glowing too much but we were able to see the sparkling water and had a nice time.

We had an excellent time with Eco Adventures. The guides can't dictate the cycle of the moon or how overcast the weather is but they can entertain you and put you in a position to see what the bay has to offer. It was a dark night when we went out and the color of the bay was incredible. Only disappointment was that we waited 35 years to experience it!

When traveling, it is good to try a new adventure, but I wouldn't do it again and I definitely do not recommend it. We were staying in San Juan (as the majority of tourists do) so we hired a shuttle to take our group of 10 to Eco Adventures for the 8:30 bioluminescence tour. It was the experience I most wanted on my trip to Puerto Rico. It was over an hour each way... not the fault of Eco Adventures, but the first step in something that took lots of effort for basically nothing. Anyway, we met up with about 10 more tourists and our guides who gave us a quick 5-minute talk about kayaking and instructions to follow the the colored lights on the back of each kayak so that we didn't get lost in the dark. They told us that the trip was one mile each way Then we were walked to the kayaks. We walked through a small river area which smelled strongly of sulfur, and felt seaweed encircling out legs. It was pretty disgusting. We had two person kayaks, so I was able to paddle with my hubby. I actually enjoyed the trip down the little river in the dark. We had to avoid various trees and shrubs (mangroves) along the way, but I enjoyed it, and thought it felt like a sort of real-life Disney ride. Then, we got to an open area. The water was not glowing... at all. They then gave us tarps to hold over our head to block out light, and then told us to splash our hands in the water. It was a little bit shiny, but honestly was less interesting than watching sunlight on any body of water. I thought they might take us to another area where there was a greater chance of seeing bioluminescence, but our tour was over, and we were headed back. The way back was no fun at all. We were going against the current, so had to paddle a little harder. The river was narrow and there were kayaks from other tours out of control running into us from the other side. I was on watch to make sure no one hit me with a paddle. On the other side we had to keep from hitting the trees. Anyway, the positive part of the Eco Adventures is the at the guides were nice. One kayak from the group got stuck in the trees and another capsized, and the guides helped them out. The evening ended up costing a lot of effort and money for little reward, but I guess an adventure is an experience to remember. All in all, I probably would prefer to have spent the evening at the beach or hotel bar.

    My serendipitous partner!

Don't book on moon days. Not bioluminescent if you do. Fine if you just want to kayak though.

Captain Juan and Perla provided everything we needed--drinks, snacks, lunch... and their deep knowledge of the area was unmatched. None of us will ever forget the green turtle that suddenly came up to the surface beside us, or the eagle ray that glided by beneath our feet. The fishing was fun for everyone and Juan used his vast knowledge of the local waters to help our teenagers catch some amazing fish (which we later ate for dinner). Juan was more than a knowledgeable host... from him we learned about the history and the culture of PR, AND got some amazing tips on where to eat throughout the rest of our stay. Highly, highly recommended.

I recommend wearing water shoes as you'll have to walk through thigh deep water to get to the kayak. You want to plan your trip as close to a new moon as possible as you want to eliminate as much light as possible to really see the glow. Annoyingly there is a neighborhood above the lagoon with bright spotlights but facing the water way and lingering near the other side of the lagoon the bioluminescence is still very visible and a total blast. The guides even brought us a tiny jellyfish to observe and see how it glowed as it wiggled in our hands. I wouldn't even bother bringing your phone, I highly doubt you'd be able to capture the glow while holding still enough in a kayak. Navigating the mangroves was tricky because the guides blue lights were just bright enough the destroy our night vision and not see the low hanging branches. I would hope in the future that the guides would switch to red lights to make navigating in the low light easier.

(Bahamas and Jamaica are there other two) The first time I went there was only one company offering this type of trip. Now there are at least 5 other companies that will offer this. In other words, that's a lot of people in the water kayaking at the same time. So we got stuck behind a few of them that only slowed us down. However, if you enjoy kayaking at night, at times in the pitch black and seeing the bioluminescent lights in the water then this is the trip for you. It doesn't disappoint. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the whole area and it was easy to see he enjoyed his job. It was also sad to see the damage the hurricane had caused to the area. You will first start off in the bay. It's a 2.5 mile run through the canal. It's extremely dark and at times you need to watch for low hanging branches. Once you get to the lagoon, you and the others are put together where you will cover yourself with a heavy tarp in order to reach your hands in the water to light up around you. Highly recommended you splash the water into the kayak and in the tarp. It will appear as though you're watching fireworks. This adventure is approximately 2.5 hours long. You met at 7:30 pm. Given instructions and life jackets then in the water by 8 pm. Good luck and have a great time. They do take a photo of you that will be emailed to you later.

The Bio Bay was such an amazing experience that I feel fortunate to have been able to capture. The thing that was frustrating is both of us have experience kayaking while it was the first time for majority of the others. We chose the 6:30pm trip so we could enjoy the sunset before heading out to the bio bay. The trip into the bio bay was smooth, you move with the current. We got to enjoy the bio bay for about 30 mins with the tour guides going through the history. They were very interesting and funny might I add. On the way back, you are traveling against the current and this is where we started to get irritated because the inexperienced kayakers weren't paying attention to the guides and kept bumping into us and each other. We kept passing others who somehow kept getting themselves stuck in crevices that they had no business getting into because the guides literally tell you to keep in a straight line. All in all, it was a great experience and I would still rate it 5 stars because the tour guides really tried their best to make sure everyone was enjoyed their experience. We were told that only mirrorless cameras were able to capture the bioluminescence. I was able to catch it on video using my iPhone 13 pro max but it doesn't capture the essence in stills.
