This tour was definitely something we were looking forward to, but in reality it wasn't that exciting. Completely understand that nobody can control Mother Nature, but locals would know the sargassum season happens every year during certain months, and there is barely any glow - it would be nice if the company was more upfront about it. I do have to give credit to the tour guides who tried their best to let us see at least some glowing under tarps and accompanied the kayak tour with some interesting stories about the ecosystem. Overall, it is not worth the money if you're coming during summer, in my opinion - it's just an overpriced kayaking tour. Winter time might be better. Also, we didn't experience any mosquitoes in August. read more

This tour was the biggest let down of our trip. You kayak through a 1.5 mile swamp canal with a ton of mosquitos to an open bay that is actually beautiful if there is enough light to see it and there was 0 bioluminescence in the bay. They gave us a tarp to put over our heads to try and see anything but there was nothing. The tour guides were nice but they knew there wasn't going to be anything visible. They told us the tide was too high and there was too much water coming in to see the organisms. I bet the tour would be worth it if what you are there to see, was actually there. I know they say no refunds but my recommendation to this company would be to let people know upfront if they know there isn't any visible bioluminescent organisms visible that day so that people can make their own choice on whether or not kayaking with mosquitos is worth seeing a dark bay. I would've chosen to forego my money and skip the misery then to be subjected to a dark paddle with a bunch of mosquitos and sargassum. read more

When traveling, it is good to try a new adventure, but I wouldn't do it again and I definitely do not recommend it. We were staying in San Juan (as the majority of tourists do) so we hired a shuttle to take our group of 10 to Eco Adventures for the 8:30 bioluminescence tour. It was the experience I most wanted on my trip to Puerto Rico. It was over an hour each way... not the fault of Eco Adventures, but the first step in something that took lots of effort for basically nothing. Anyway, we met up with about 10 more tourists and our guides who gave us a quick 5-minute talk about kayaking and instructions to follow the the colored lights on the back of each kayak so that we didn't get lost in the dark. They told us that the trip was one mile each way Then we were walked to the kayaks. We walked through a small river area which smelled strongly of sulfur, and felt seaweed encircling out legs. It was pretty disgusting. We had two person kayaks, so I was able to paddle with my hubby. I actually enjoyed the trip down the little river in the dark. We had to avoid various trees and shrubs (mangroves) along the way, but I enjoyed it, and thought it felt like a sort of real-life Disney ride. Then, we got to an open area. The water was not glowing... at all. They then gave us tarps to hold over our head to block out light, and then told us to splash our hands in the water. It was a little bit shiny, but honestly was less interesting than watching sunlight on any body of water. I thought they might take us to another area where there was a greater chance of seeing bioluminescence, but our tour was over, and we were headed back. The way back was no fun at all. We were going against the current, so had to paddle a little harder. The river was narrow and there were kayaks from other tours out of control running into us from the other side. I was on watch to make sure no one hit me with a paddle. On the other side we had to keep from hitting the trees. Anyway, the positive part of the Eco Adventures is the at the guides were nice. One kayak from the group got stuck in the trees and another capsized, and the guides helped them out. The evening ended up costing a lot of effort and money for little reward, but I guess an adventure is an experience to remember. All in all, I probably would prefer to have spent the evening at the beach or hotel bar. read more

My first bioluminescent tour! We didn't get too much time (10 minutes) after the initial mile trek through pitch-black waters and some precarious tree branches, but the guides were funny and personable. I'm really looking forward to even more ideal conditions where the light "pollution" doesn't affect your ability to see the glowing plankton. People were being quite inconsiderate cutting the "line" and discombobulated rowing, so I highly recommend staying back so you don't get crashed into, I do wish the guides would stress a bit more organized rowing but overall I appreciated my experience! I need a go pro so I can capture actual footage next time because those waterproof phone bags don't really help lol. read more

Do NOT book online. We booked online and received a confirmation then received a cancelation 48 hours later because there was a "glitch in the system" that they "have no control over" and it is out of their hands. We were left 1 day before a tour with no reservations and scrambling because of their faulty technology. I understand from their manager that they have very little interaction with their ticket provider and if you do not book over the phone it is not necessarily confirmed. Stop researching now and book the tour with Eco Adventures! They are a well oiled machine from beginning to end. Be sure to follow instructions from the email about where to park and how early to check in. There is plenty of parking, food options, and bathrooms (that can get busy) available. You will get wet waist down as you walk into the lagoon to get into your kayak. Bring a wet bag for your keys and that is all you need. The guides on the tour are fantastic and are happy to answer questions and provide recommendations. Do your best to schedule a tour during a new moon and do the later tour to ensure it is dark for the best experience possible. read more

Zero customer service. One of the worst experiences ever!! They KNEW and admitted there was too much sargasso seaweed in the bay and visibility was terrible, yet they didn't contact customers to give them the option of cancelling and didn't mention anything until we were out there in the complete darkness. Their solution? To tie the kayaks together and cover our heads with huge dusty gray tarps so we could MAYBE see some bioluminescence in the water. They knew full well we wouldn't see anything. Paddling back took forever going at a snail's pace in complete darkness. the "tour guides" hardly communicated at all. When I asked for a refund and why they didn't at LEAST let us know as a courtesy that the visibility was awful and give us the option to cancel, they said that on the website basically it states they can't control nature. After my first email and poor review, I received a nasty phone call from a female employee of the company who wanted to argue with me about our experience, argue about the comments their "tour guides" made and tell me they are a night kayak tour, not a bioluminescent tour so they will not refund me. Horrible. Avoid this company!!!! read more

Worst kayak in PR. FALSE ADVERTISING. NOTHING glowed and when they were asked, no one could answer me why they promoted such a beautiful time. Also they did not want to refund ONE person out of 5 in our party due to them overeating the night before and weighing ONLY 9 pounds over the weight limit. The booking manager was SUPER rude over the phone and laughs in my ear saying he doesn't care and that we should have read the policy. That's NO way to speak to a customer, let alone someone who is PUERTORICAN, not just some random tourist. I WILL NEVER reconnect this to anyone, Not even my enemies. 0/10 experience/ customer service. read more

This was amazing and totally worth it! Beautiful, calm, peaceful and magical! Joel and Dawn were great guides. The bioluminescence wasn't the brightest because it was almost a full moon (if you can go on a no-moon night). But guides were prepared with a tarp to block moonlight so that you could get the effect. And then if you can get yourself under some mangrove trees you can see it good also. It is not going to be like the Avatar movies because - well this is real life people;) But it is as about magical as we can get here in real life world. I unfortunately made in error in my booking of 4 with another company for a different date. When I went to ask if they had any openings, they made it happen!! We were so thankful. It ended up being a better group!! The group was maybe 15 people (instead of the 30 i originally booked with) the instructors were awesome!!! We went thru the mangroves with a few stories as we went. When we arrived in the big lake area it was AMAZING!! It was a beautiful night and we were able to see the bioluminescence. It is something definitely worth doing and Christian and other instructors were awesome!! Highly recommend!! read more

This was such a fun adventure!! I HIGHLY recommend it. They were very helpful, informative, and accommodating. Such a beautiful activity. The water, the bioluminescent things, the stars... everything was great! They also went above and beyond to make sure we had proper transportation heading home. We took an Uber here, but after the adventure there were NO ubers in the area. We were essentially stranded. The Eco Adventures team could tell we were a little concerned about our trip back to our hotel (1 hour drive). They asked us if we needed help, and they offered to speak to a bus driver on our behalf. We received a ride to our hotel for less than the price of an Uber!!! These guys are amazing, the nicest people! you will have an incredible time! PS. If you take an Uber here, you will need to find another way back. There are no ubers in this area. read more

Cancelled on us the day of the trip! I would not recommend this company. One of the main things we wanted to do while in Puerto Rico was the Bio tours, so we booked in advance with this company. The day of our tour they reached out to cancel. Their reason was due to it being Holy Friday. I understand it was a holiday, we knew that when we booked, but to cancel on the day of the tour with no real reason was very frustrating. The tour was planned at the end of our trip so we were left scrambling trying to find other options. Luckily we found a better company that was able to take us out on Easter Sunday. The Bay is definitely worth visiting and was one of the highlights of our trip to Puerto Rico. We are lucky we found a better company as this company almost ruined that experience for our group. Use a different company as this company is very unreliable. We are 6 days after the cancellation and we still haven't received a refund, or any communication about when the refund will be processed. read more

But the actual weather exp was a bit frustrating- too many kayak companies going in and out of the tributary to the bay and the group moved so slowly we barely kayaked at all. The bioluminescent water was underwhelming but that might be a climate issues or the time of year. overall it was a fun time and as mentioned above the guides were fantastic. read more

My husband and I, son, and mother-in- went on an Eco Adventures Bio Bay Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour in Fajardo, Puerto Rico in December. The sparkling water and the bright stars in the night sky were beautiful. The glowing, blue water has to be seen to be believed, a night to be remembered forever. I am so glad we picked Eco Adventures! Looking into doing the Bio Bay tour in Fajardo, there are so many tour companies that it is almost overwhelming. They all have okay-ish reviews and the pricing is almost the same so it is kind of hard to decide which one to go to. We just trusted our gut and picked Eco Adventures because the time availability was convenient to us. But I have to say, it was the best decision. They ask you to reach the meeting point 15 minutes before the tour starts. We were running a little late so they were nice to call us and check on where we were at. We reached exactly at the tour time so they quickly accommodated us and started the tour. The guides were young and passionate about what they do. They were super informative and you could feel their passion and love for the lagoon. We went on a day very close to the full moon so there was a lot of light interference, but we still saw the bioluminescence. The phenomenon is just mind blowing. The route to the lagoon goes through mangroves that you kayak through which in itself was a unique experience. We asked a lot of questions and all the guides were nice enough to answer. I highly recommend going with Eco Adventures. We really had a great time! read more

Read up on the possible nightmares that could occur with various tours. Tour guide saying 2 words the whole trip. Tour guide not knowing what the plan was. Tarps being thrown over you to see the bioluminescence at 4pm because the guides didn't want to wait it out til night time. Luckily none of this happened with Eco Adventures. We were picked up right on time- they said 10-10:30am and they were there at 10:15. We shared the tour with a family and a couple, so we lucked out that the group was of the smaller size. After picking everyone up the guide took our food orders so that it'd be ready by the time we got to the restaurant. He may have upsold us on a few things as we ordered, but I can't deny his hustle game. Our guide was very high energetic, very engaging, and made the 45 minute trip to the trail seem fast. I wish I could tell you his name, but when I asked, he said "You can call me Tour Guide." Alrighty then. He was very mindful to tell us about our stops and where we should change into our bathing suits, if we so needed to. The walk to the falls was fairly easy, with most of it paved. The only thing to be careful of is the slickness of the surfaces...you would see people slip every now and then. Took us to the falls, which was crowded, but gave us ample time to hang out and freeze our butts off in the water. Lunch is late by American standards- 3 or 4pm. You definitely work up a hunger. It may be worth bringing some snacks and water with you before you head out. There were a few stops where you could buy stuff, but it's probably easier getting it beforehand. There's a break between lunch and the bio bay kayaking. Bring mosquito spray. No joke. It may be worth having a small bottle to take while you kayak as well, since some of it may wash off while you're getting on the kayak or getting splashed on. We headed out on the kayaks around dusk, as the sun was coming down. Perfect timing as the visibility is limited in the mangroves and it provided enough light to get through. Getting to the bay wasn't an issue, but the sun is completely gone once you reach the bay and make your return. It's completely pitch black on the return and you rely on the beacon lights of the kayaks in front of you. Every now and then the guides will shine a flashlight, but they try to limit it as you can only see the glowing plankton in the darkness. We were there when the conditions were perfect for it, so we could see a bunch of glowing plankton as we paddled. Ads make it seem like the whole bay is glowing, but in actuality, it's more like little fireflies. The guides were engaging and entertaining. They did a great job navigating everyone through, especially once it became completely dark. They'll take photos and post them on their facebook page, free of charge. When we returned, we learned that there was a group going out right after us. I'm glad we had the earlier tour, as navigating through the mangroves in complete darkness is a little difficult. I was happy we only had to do that on one leg of the trip since the first leg still had sunlight. After getting out of the kayaks, water/juice and snacks (crackers and cookies) were waiting for us.
