We left last night. Rain was the major player all day. Going kayaking and going to get wet. Let's do it! They said leave everything behind and we did. They held our keys for us. Some who took their camera never got a thing because you just can't see the beauty of the bio unless you have special lighting. We lucked out with the dark of the moon. The rain helped. As we paddled in the mangroves, we saw our paddles light up. The rain drops caused the water to ignite like fireflies. Pedro was one of our guides who gave the safety speech and kept us humans entertained. He filled us with knowledge if you wanted to listen. At the lagoon we sat under tarps and played in the darkness. Splash the water onto yourself and light up like Christmas. Many said the grand lagoon was not as bright as the past, but we had someone with us who experienced it in 2009. He said it was just as bright. You just never know the way it will react on a particular day. We were very lucky and very entertained. Other groups took so many that it seemed they were a mess. Our group max was 15 dual kayaks. Take your partner or they will assign you one. I'm from Missouri and you have to show me, and they did. I like the smaller group size. We will do it again and this is where we will go. Thanks guys for a great adventure!

In this bay is more like glowing twinkles in the water. You can get here on your own, renting your own kayak and I've also heard they offer a walking tour of the bay. We reserved a tour with a local kayak company in order to access the bay. If you are an experience kayaker, I would recommend you rent a kayak and go on your own. However, be aware that tours happen at 6 and 8 and the mangrove canal is packed. All in all, it's a beautiful bay both during night and during daylight.

I brought my kids back in July 2026 hoping to share that same experience, but the bioluminescence has faded dramatically. What was once a stunning light show is now barely a flicker. Tour operators still run the same trips at the same price without setting proper expectations -- understandable since it's their business, but disappointing for visitors. Practical tip: don't bother waiting for a later evening tour hoping for better glow. At this point it's just a regular kayak trip -- the only difference later at night is that you're paddling in the dark instead of at dusk. If you want a nice kayak outing, it's fine. If you're chasing the bioluminescent magic this place is famous for, temper your expectations.

So when I tried to clarify because the money was already debited from my account and voice my confusion- his response was "is that what I said?" To further clarify according to his words I would be paying over $300 to rebook while waiting for the original payment to be refunded and it would have been nice to have gotten a phone call to sort this out yesterday instead of two hours before my scheduled pickup. His response was to become irate, yelling that it was "water under the bridge" and "he didnt have to take me with MY attitude." I asked about my refund when I told him I wasny arguing with his but he was very unprofessional and he said "we'll I'm arguing with you." I said you guys were the ones who made the wrror, I'm having over 300 debited from my account and this was his response. He hung up on me. Needless to say, I'm grateful for the cancellatio. (Bahamas and Jamaica are there other two) The first time I went there was only one company offering this type of trip. Now there are at least 5 other companies that will offer this. In other words, that's a lot of people in the water kayaking at the same time. So we got stuck behind a few of them that only slowed us down. However, if you enjoy kayaking at night, at times in the pitch black and seeing the bioluminescent lights in the water then this is the trip for you. It doesn't disappoint. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the whole area and it was easy to see he enjoyed his job. It was also sad to see the damage the hurricane had caused to the area. You will first start off in the bay. It's a 2.5 mile run through the canal. It's extremely dark and at times you need to watch for low hanging branches. Once you get to the lagoon, you and the others are put together where you will cover yourself with a heavy tarp in order to reach your hands in the water to light up around you. Highly recommended you splash the water into the kayak and in the tarp. It will appear as though you're watching fireworks. This adventure is approximately 2.5 hours long. You met at 7:30 pm. Given instructions and life jackets then in the water by 8 pm. Good luck and have a great time. They do take a photo of you that will be emailed to you later.

The Bio Bay was such an amazing experience that I feel fortunate to have been able to capture. The thing that was frustrating is both of us have experience kayaking while it was the first time for majority of the others. We chose the 6:30pm trip so we could enjoy the sunset before heading out to the bio bay. The trip into the bio bay was smooth, you move with the current. We got to enjoy the bio bay for about 30 mins with the tour guides going through the history. They were very interesting and funny might I add. On the way back, you are traveling against the current and this is where we started to get irritated because the inexperienced kayakers weren't paying attention to the guides and kept bumping into us and each other. We kept passing others who somehow kept getting themselves stuck in crevices that they had no business getting into because the guides literally tell you to keep in a straight line. All in all, it was a great experience and I would still rate it 5 stars because the tour guides really tried their best to make sure everyone was enjoyed their experience. We were told that only mirrorless cameras were able to capture the bioluminescence. I was able to catch it on video using my iPhone 13 pro max but it doesn't capture the essence in stills.
