we did a 7 pm trip in early june 26 . A 1.2 mile paddle to laguna grande thru mangrove lined creek- 0.2 mile across bay from boat launch. Once in Laguna Grande we ran paddles and hands thru water to see bioluescence for about 20 min , then paddled back. Our guides were fantastic! There were 3 of us, one of us got to be with the guide. I was so happy it was me, because my two monsters wanted to annoy each other the entire time. My guide knew I was nervous, so he said "you don't have to do any work if you don't want to. I do this every day and I will take care of all of it." Our guides were pretty bad. The main guide, Brian, was good but the rest of them were talking shit about our group in Spanish, assuming no one would understand. We took the 7pm tour and in order to see the bioluminescence, we had to pull a tarp over our heads and splash our hands in the water. You could barely see it. Worst of all, we had to paddle back, through a narrow mangrove, in the dark. Overall, would not recommend this experience. There are definitely better ways to see the bioluminescence in Puerto Rico. read more

Caribe Hotel concierge lead me to Las Tortugas Adventures. We were picked up at our hotel. It was a long ride but totally worth it! We arrived 2 hours later in a small tow on the east side of the island. They were prepared and ready to get our adventure moving! We immediately signed waivers, got in our safety swim jackets and then were in our kayaks and heading out onto the open water! Very efficient. A few things to know: 1. If you are not a fan of the dark, this isn't for you. 2. Locals do not have to have lights on their vessels so you are in the dark and people can just be coming your way! It is slightly dangerous as you are in narrow water passages with mangroves sticking out. BE CAREFUL! To avoid a boat we ended up in the mangroves! 3. Bring a towel and even better a change of clothes because it's a wet 2 hour van ride back to the hotel! The bioluminescent experience is based on the weather the last few days and how dark it is when you are there. It is quite a sign to see! Imagine your hand glowing as you pull it out of the water for a few seconds! Amazing that this is nature. Well worth trying! We had fun even if it was a little dangerous and at moments tense (kayak traffic and dark in small water passages.) Upon returning to the loading dock, there were bags of chips and water. We were out for awhile so there is no option for dinner but make sure you haev it lined up upon returning back to your hotel you know where you can grab a late night meal. read more

Brian was our guide. He was great, good instructions, great info on the bioluminescent bay, pointed out the constellations to us and was a nice competent person. Not so great? The other people on our tour who don't understand what single file means. Also at a certain point you are kayaking through pitch black in a mangrove canal with other kayaks coming towards you and those people are even worse than the folks on your tour. Nevertheless, it was AMAZING, 10 out of 10. You've got to do this once in your life. Just don't do it with your 19 year old kid who bosses you around because they think you are an idiot that doesn't know how to kayak. read more

We booked this little adventure through our resort and didn't know anything really before going into it. It was pretty chaotic and stressful going down the canal in the dark. People crashing into each other and guides kind of sort of helping. The best part was not in the bay itself but a little bit before you get there you can see the bioluminescence while you're paddling and it is MAGICAL. When we went to the actual bay we all got in a line and they put tarps over our heads. Since the kayaks were side by side I could barely see anything. There was a small crevice I dipped my hand in the water but that was it. Other people were taking flash pictures under the tarp, blinding everyone else, and ruining the experience. The worst of all is the owner. He has a super bad anger management issue it seems. One kayaker before our trip was upset that she got lost due to the confusion of the light system. (And trust me, I wouldn't want to be lost in the mangroves either.) They got into a huge verbal argument with him screaming and telling her to go away. It made my anxiety go right through the roof. Eventually she left and he continued to be in his feelings. He pulled his staff aside and yelled at them. At the end of our trip he snarkily asked "did anyone get lost?!" read more

The staff was great and helpful. The ride there was excellent. However, the bioluminescent plankton was lacking (the guides explained that this was a result of climate change causing an overgrowth of this smelly algae that is consuming a lot of the resources the plankton use and choking them off) and we could only see a few sparks in the water when paddling. read more

Magical. It's the first and only word that comes to mind. The guides were extremely helpful & so knowledgeable- they love their job. What impressed me most was that even after having done these tours 2x night nearly every night, they were still just as inspired as we were. Be prepared to do some work; the current can be a bit strong in some stead's and you do paddle for about 1.5 miles to get the the bay, but if you take the early tour you see the beautiful of the canal as you get there, the trees & wildlife. Nature just envelops you & when it's full on dark, she then hugs you cozy & gives up all her secrets. For the pros, Booking online was easy, check in and greet was smooth, the guides tried to be helpful, company provided a dry bag for your items. We got suited, in the kayaks and took off, there was a bit of a line so we waited for 5 to 10 minutes, then we got going. Cons: I thought we were moving at a good pace, made it to the Bay Area, it wasn't quite dark yet so we tried to use a cover to make it darker which worked but it was a mess, and hot. About 7-10 minutes into it we turned back and started heading back. I am not sure what the rush was, it's a lot of paddling for 7-10 minutes in the luminescent bay, and part of it wasn't quite dark yet. The tour is advertised as hour and a half, not sure why we got 50% less, it seemed rushed and not enough time in the bay. I would not recommend this company, and suggest find another one that isn't going to short change your time in the bay, the whole point of it is to see the luminescent bay, the time we got shortchanged when it got darker would have been nice. A lot of better companies out there. read more

Very uncomfortable seats on the kayak. Dark and far going thru the mangroves. Lots of yelling in Spanish from the staff. Disappointing bioluminescent visibility compared to advertisement. 1 couple fell into the water 2x. Thank goodness for one of the staff towing us back to Port. Also, 1/2 way thru a staff member adjusted my seat which helped for a little while. read more

Kayaking: It was very choppy water to initially cross, for people with young children or little experience this could be very challenging to get through. Once crossed over the stream you enter is a much more calm. The moon was half, so chances to see the bioluminescent was slim, the guides brought a tarp for us to see. It was dim but visible with the tarp, very cool to witness. Transportation: We booked through our hotel and selected our excursions based on transportation availability. We got a call around 2PM for our 6:15 pickup that we could no longer be picked up because there were not enough people booked (did not see that transportation was tentative on anything) and we were asked to change our booking to a 4PM pickup. Luckily we had gotten back to our hotel from our morning excursion with time to prepare. read more

The guides were great. Funny, personable, welcoming and encouraging. The tour was challenging and fun. We had a few mishaps with guiding our kayak and passing other inexperienced kayakers, but that added to experience in a comical way. It is hit or miss when it comes to seeing the bioluminescent since being able to see it depends on how dark it is. Although I didn't get to really see it, I had a great time. This experience is worth doing but there could be some improvements. The main one is that there were not enough guides for the amount of people. We were helped into our kayak (2 people per kayak) with zero instructions. It was pitch dark and I was confused as to where to start paddling. I saw a blinking red light and followed it. I was a bit nervous that we could be going the wrong way. You paddle through a mangrove which is cool. Once you get to the clearing, it is a bit underwhelming but you can see the bioluminescence if you swirl your hand in the water. I am glad I did it, but it was a bit stressful being in the dark and not much guidance. read more

Great experience! Excellent instructions by the guides. Everyone was helpful and friendly. Easy to see the waters reaction to the movement by the kayaks and oars. Pictures do not come out well. Splash some water into the kayaks or on legs to see the photosynthesis work it's magic. If you are lucky you might see some fish swimming causing a small under water light show. read more

The tour guides were amazing.they stay by you the entire time to help you, we are a family of four and only one of us have kayaked before , so to be honest the rest of us were nervous about going, they gave us a full instructions to help us understand how to do it , THE ONLY THING I'll say is u must bring bug spray, don't forget it in the car like we did, the water was beautiful, splashing around in the water while it glows, spectacular.. This is my second time booking with Las Tortugas throughout the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar, and it was great! Both times we got to see the bay light up when paddling through. The tour guides had a great energy and were able to help you if you got stuck. It does get really dark in the mangroves when paddling through, so if you don't like the dark, I wouldn't recommend. Bring a towel and clothes you don't mind getting wet because water does get into the Kayak! The experience was definitely worth it! read more

Went through the cruise ship. Overall, the entire experience was only 1.5 hrs and the time we got to spend in bio bay was very limited. However the actual experience was magical! They say it's based on ideal conditions (warm water, sunny day, dark night), and our night they were 90% of their brightness. The guides are very nice and informative. Snacks afterwards are offbrand chips and water. I don't think it's worth what I paid for such a limited time in the bay as the advertisements say 1.5 hours each way (in and out). we went on this excursion guided by the el conquistador resort. the kayak tour and bay were incredible. absolute must. the tour guides were very good. if your doing this tour from the el conquistador, map it out before you talk to the excursion rep. they will say you need a taxi and tell you it's not walkable, then charge you $50 for a cab cause they tell you Ubers won't work on this side of the island. The kayak launch is a five minute walk from your room. read more

Transport was included from our resort in Isla Verde which was much less stressful than getting an expensive ride by Uber or taxi to Fajardo. Does require you to be able to paddle your own kayak.
