I rarely write reviews, but this one is about safety, so here it goes. The car Economy Rent a Car gave me had tires so worn and cracked they were visibly bulging -- I spent the whole rental genuinely afraid one would fail at speed. When I raised it, I learned they don't even provide proper equipment to swap a spare, so a flat would've left me stranded on a remote road. On top of the danger: surprise fees that made the advertised "economy" price a joke, and response times that were somewhere between glacial and nonexistent. This is a company that takes your money and hands you a hazard. Avoid completely. read more

BEWARE this is a terrible company with terrible business practices. They advertise a low rental rate on Expedia ($17 per day) and upon arrival they force you to buy an extra insurance for over $50 USD per day. I've rented cars in Mexico before over 50 times, and am aware there is a mandatory insurance, but I have NEVER had to pay anywhere near that much. DO NOT USE THESE THIEVES. read more

BEWARE, BEWARE! Eurocar handles rentals for Fox at the Oaxaca airport. The car pick-up is off site, just outside the airport entrance. I was STUNNED to be told that if I had rented and purchased insurance through Booking.com that I would have a USD 14,000 deposit charged to my credit card. Needless to say my MC pretty nearly blew up when the charge hit. I also had to pay an $84 tax because the insurance was outside of Mexico. It's crazy to buy insurance in Mexico since it's twice the price of RentalCover. Still don't quite understand it all. Apparently, the insane deposit is not uncommon. Not sure if all of the rental companies do this or if it is just Eurocar and Fox. Be forewarned! Also, car was in need of service when it was turned over to us. I was unhappy with the "Oil change needed" light on the entire time we had the car. Fortunately we didn't break down! read more

First let me state, we've encountered issues in the past between Mexican based car rental agencies and 3rd party websites (Expedia, Kayak, du jour). At times the language barrier made it frustrating between what we assumed and what is reality on the ground... whether it is someone honestly trying to do their job or someone who doesn't care. Walking into Economy we did our homework and we're prepared to just ask questions and get answers to make some decisions (like the old days of traveling). Second Edgar at Economy was great to work with. We really appreciated his English in helping us understand the ins and outs of renting cars in Mexico, especially trying to navigate what Economy was offering in regards to price per day, taxes, collision coverage (potentially optional) and required Mexican liability vs what Expedia was offering. For example, Expedia states that Mexican liability is included in the total but that is not true, it is still required to be purchased in country and it seems that's the #1 issue non-Mexicans (including us) have run into in the past with 3rd party websites. We were also covered by our credit card (chase) for collision coverage and Edgar and Economy honored that coverage. That said we are still unsure, but suspect, that collision coverage is not mandatory. In the end, we compared the line by line costs of the per day cost and taxes for our rental, and going directly to Economy was cheaper by ~$10 per day. That was based on our own collision coverage and the added, required liability coverage for Mexico. On the Eurocar website for it states that "Liability Insurance Products purchased on third party travel websites are not accepted in México." Our advice is that in general as a US traveler the best rates through 3rd party apps is generally true for US and European travel but not the case in Mexico; it was a better rate going directly to the rental agency here in Oaxaca. read more

The agent Edgar was a really nice guy, was straight forward with the policy of renting a car. Very communicative he knows his areas and knows how to advise good tourists places and hidden gems. The process of renting a car was easy. His location is located outside of Oaxaca airport but he picks you up at the airport and takes you to his business. At drop off of the rental car he takes you back to the airport. We will definitely be renting only from him again, highly recommended if you are ever in Oaxaca and ask for Edgar. read more

I received an Renault Duster maybe 15 years old with many scratches everywhere. The condition of the car and age was okay for me. BUT: Two days after I brought the car back in Oaxaca, the company wrote to me that there was a damage for 200 dollars, attached an repair offer from a garage. There is NO protocol for any damage caused by me. And when I brought it back, the employee did not mention any problem. MOREOVER: The document from the garage that the company engaged is for another car, same model but from 2018, thus much newer model as the one I rented. I am now trying to sort it out with them... Until this problem is not solved, I cannot recommend this rental company. I will take my review back as soon as this case is closed and I got my deposit (50000 MXD) back. read more

I reserved online with Expedia and had already paid online before visiting Economy Car Rentals in Oaxaca Centro. Suddenly things became very complicated. The extra collision insurance Expedia had offered at $11 per day was deemed invalid in Mexico. Instead I was encourged to purchase further insurance for $18 per day and deposit of 50,000 pesos on my credit card. I've been travelling for months and have nearly maxxed out my card, so Economy offered to reduce the deposit if I paid $30 for additional insurance. In addition there was a 5% fee for reserving online with a foreign credit card. I was surprised imagining I had already paid the total cost of the car for the weekend. I refused delivery and contacted Expedia who told me my car reservation could not be cancelled and I would be billed the full amount. Now I am in contact with my credit card company to dispute these charges. Its a pain, especially since both Expedia and my Card company only offer 800 contact numbers which can't be reached from Mexico. Economy is not very accommodating, and Expedia has no idea that its contracts are not being honored at the Mexican rental offices. I feel a bit disgruntled since I am wasting a considerable portion of my vacation day trying to resolve a further incident in the ongoing 'estafa turistica'. It's not a lot of money, but I don't feel I should pay more than I agreed to pay, and I certainly don't feel I should pay for something I didn't get. Cafe Trebol on Calle Aldama in Oaxaca Centro rents scooters. If you're going to Hierve el Agua and back on a Moto your bum will ache for a week, but its fun, cheaper and you won't have to deal with Mexican or American corporate sleaze. !Bien Viaje Amigos! read more

Rented a Chevrolet AVEO there on 2021-03-12 for 110 USD for the weekend. The car has been given to us with non-functioning braking lights. Which we didn't see at first because we got the car during the day. Someone broke the glass of our rear stop light while we were parked. We told Economy, which came back 2 days later with a 12 000 MXN (600 USD) bill. In the bill included the broken glass AND a quote for repairs of the rear bumper which "was broken inside and not visible from the outside". When we asked to see the car it was "impossible cause the car is at the expert assessment company". After 1 hour of negotiation the price of the "repairs" magically came down to 6000 MXN. I don't recommend renting there. No problem with their competitor Alamo whatsoever. read more

I was out tin the parking lot and europcar rental attendant stated i damaged the car he said it would be $175. Then he said he would do me a favor and only charge me $25. we then get to the counter and he charged me $78.00. DO NOT RENT from EUROPCAR Rentals they will rip you off. read more
