Had a great foodie drinkie experience here! We brought our 20 plus group here and the cream didn't even blink! Our server was Cleo. She was a star! Took exceptional care of us. I might admit we're a high maintenance group, but I felt attended to completely. The live music was outstanding and we could enjoy the music easily from our space. Terrible night. Place wasn't that busy but we still waited 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us at the door. Then we were shown to our table and ignored for another 10 minutes until our server wandered over. We told her we had to leave in time for a show at a nearby theatre and the information seemed to barely register. 35 minutes later and no update from our server on our order. When she finally wandered back over (if the place was busier than usual, you wouldn't know it to watch her drift around aimlessly), we told her to cancel our mains and just bring our appetizers. Then she comes back with our mains and tells us she forgot to order our appetizers. And one of our mains was the wrong item. The food, which had definitely been sitting in the kitchen for a while before she brought it over, was lukewarm and soggy. I don't think it would have been that much better had it been served promptly. While we were waiting for our food, we had a good time counting the dirty glasses piling up on the bar because the bartender also seemed to be in no hurry to do her job. I think there were about 50 by the time we left. We've eaten on the patio in the summer and it's been ok, but won't be back ever after this experience. read more

This would've been laughable if it hadn't been annoying. Maybe the server was new? If so, don't do the job if you're not capable. Summary: - There were four of us, and they seated us 10 minutes after our reservation, giving attention to groups just walking in (or sometimes just plain didn't even give attention at all to people like us waiting at the entrance). A quick "Did you have a table reserved?" would have had us seated and helped speed things up. - We ordered at 6:15 and when we said we needed to be out by 7:30 in order to catch a show nearby (see above, and why we had made a reservation), the server looked like she didn't quite understand the request. When we asked again if she thought we could be out by that time (75 minutes from when we sat down), she said she "thought so" and our order came 45 minutes later, just after 7:00. A good server in that position would either say, "Yup, we can do it" or "Sorry, can't guarantee that. We're too busy this evening." None of this slow blinking like you've never heard this request before, or don't know how to handle it. - So we didn't get a single thing to eat until 45 minutes later, not even our appetizers. As we neared 7:00, we asked the server to just cancel our main dishes and at least give us our shareable appetizer. She brought out all our mains and told us that she'd forgotten to put in our order for the appetizer. - Of the four main dishes, she even got one wrong. Our guy ate it anyway because he was hungry. Not a nice experience to feel that you have to rush through your meals and then get the server's attention to pay, all under 30 minutes. - Wish I could say the experience was saved by the food, but the food was just mediocre, standard pub fare. And considering that 3 of the 4 mains we ordered were done in a deep fryer (poutine, fish and chips, and the incorrectly-ordered fried chicken sandwich), you'd think they could have pushed those out in under 45 minutes. - It looked like there were only two servers on duty, so between the two of them and the bartender, there was a lot of dirty glasses on the counter and dirty tablewear hanging around, along with waiting customers, sometimes while the bartender was just looking at her phone. So I can't judge Economy Shoe Shop on its food but I can say that it's a gorgeous historical building and an awesome pub and bar for social gatherings, dinners or drinks. It is a fairly noisy spot but I guess that's probably normal for bars. I was just in awe of the gorgeous stained glass, historical architecture and beautiful fixtures. They offers a couple marked vegan options on their menu as well, including the Beyond burger. And the waitress was very good at answering my questions regarding other items on the menu. Went to the Economy Shoe Shop (RIP btw...it's closing soon) with several friends during my time in Halifax for dinner and drinks. It's a popular bar amongst Dal students as I was told. Since I didn't have dinner yet, I went for both dinner and drinks. The menu isn't too extensive, but does cover your typical bar food. I had the seafood chowder and the blackened chicken and mushroom alfredo. The portions are not big at all which sadly disappointed me, although the taste was decent. The chowder had a lot of seafood packed in the small bowl, which I liked. I also had the garrison raspberry wheat ale, which was the special the bar ran until 7pm that night. It was okay, nothing to write home about. Their selection is also nothing too drastic compared to other bars I've been to. Service was poor. It took 30 minutes for a server to finally take our order, and they proceeded to mess up one of our orders. Otherwise it was fine. read more

She then immediately billed us out (while being very rude, disrespectful, and bLTchy). I of course did not tip, to which she responded under her breath "well I don't tip my servers either". She said we could have ten minutes to finish our drinks (because we received our drinks BEFORE she said we couldn't stay). My sister and I had brunch at the Economy Shoe Shop today. It was a gorgeous day and we sat on the patio. My sister doesn't eat meat and had eggs, toast and wedge fries ($6). I had a burger and wedge fries. It was a good burger! The bun was perfect ... soft and not too doughy. It was a great deal for $10. I saw that nachos are $17 ... that's expensive! We sat in front of the original restaurant. Over the years, it has expanded and has taken over the two buildings to the right also. They are all interconnected. The space is really cool. I give the shoe shop an overall two the pricing is touristy high, The ambience is baby boomer centric, We had their Philly cheesesteak, The big shoe burger and buffalo Brussels sprouts. All the food was pretty generic, a bit salty, not that unique but the brussels sprouts were really low spot. Minimal choices for local beer. Can't really rate the food here but the bar tender was super nice! We came in while waiting for the comedy show next door, and thought to grab some drinks. We had beer previously, so we thought to get some cocktails. The bar tender was very nice and explained what was in each cocktail (most of it sounded too sweet, so we ended up getting something else). Best nachos in town? You bet! What makes them so good? They give you a huge plate with multiple layers of nacho and cheese goodness! You can also add chicken or beef, if you so wish. I remember the Shoe Shop from its 90s heyday, when it had a cutting edge menu, a great wine list, and was the film industry hangout until the wee hours. Fast forward 20+ years ... I wanted to really like it. My partner had never been there, it was a hot August night, we were downtown - let's grab a late supper, I said. Feh. We would have done far better to have headed for a late night pizza. The menu is just strange. I suspect much is coming pre-frozen and portion-controlled from Sysco; it's just incoherent, and a cross between overpriced pub and please-everyone restaurant. You got your butter chicken and your burgers and your duck carbonara ... yes, I made the mistake of ordering the duck carbonara. It was a heap of - to be fair, nicely al dente - pasta, with dollops of ?duck?, a few mushrooms, and about a half cup, I am not exaggerating, of flavourless oil swimming in the bottom of the dish. I query the duck, because it was some sort of shredded poultry that had absolutely no taste. How can you make duck have no taste? Oh, and the wine/beer list was a joke. The Shoe Ship still has prétentions to be better than a college pub, but there were almost no craft beers - in a province that is punching far above its weight in producing them - and only one Canadian wine. Shop Shoe has been a staple DT for a long time. Going here after work when I was single with the girls on a Friday night was something that they always looked forward to. It is something about this place that never really turned my crank but I went along for the ride. Often trying to squeeze through the crowd to get to the bar was very frustrating. The overall design of the bar itself did not work for me. To cut up and to narrow maybe they did that to bring people closer together. The Economy Shoe Shop is one of our cities more popular bars. It has a great atmosphere, but it's popularity can sometimes cause orders to get backed up and occasionally forgotten. I love the nachos at the Shoe Shop, and although the prices are a little expensive it can be worth it as a treat every once in a while. That being said, as good as the food can be, there have been times I've waited over twenty minutes for a diet coke! Call me crazy, but this seems like a bit too long. Even worse, I've had friends not receive their drink orders. I know it can get crowded, but this is a problem that should really be sorted out. Well, it is what it is. If you want to "see and be seen" in Halifax, you go here. It's like a rule. All of the city's minor, major and medium celebrities hang here so they can act all cool and pretend like they don't see anyone around them. Whatev. Apart from the people-watching, there's not much other reason to come here. The food is mediocre - and that's giving it more credit than it deserves. (The nachos are crazy overrated.) The service is too pretty to care about your order. I'm really upset writing this review because it used to be sucha great place and I feel like it's only still in business now because it's a 'staple' of Halifax. But it really shouldn't be. Without comparison, 'The Economy Shoe Shop,' or 'The Shoe,' has no rival in Halifax when it comes to restaurant ambience. The tropical plants strung precariously from walls and light fixtures combined with the rustic vaulted ceilings and dripping candles truly make this place a must see. Located in the restaurant hub of Argyle street, from which all things tend to flow, (literally, all things, as it's located down the hill from the infamous 'Palace' night club) 'The Shoe' is a must stop if for the panache of the place alone. Good news too, the food isn't bad either- especially not at this price point: Tapas and sandwiches mainly go for around $10, with pricier items still ringing in around the $15-$25 mark. Expect a twist on typical north-American fare, with a decidedly east coast injection. Food: 7.5/10. Be sure to try their award winning nachos! Literally they've won The Coast's annual nacho category so many times the category has been retired to the hall of fame. Unfortunately, however, the servers and bartenders at 'The Shoe' seem to be relying on the mystique of the place alone; you certainly won't be inclined to come back based on the service. Since reservations aren't possible, expect a healthy dose of attitude if perchance you show up with a party of 6+. All in all, if you can ignore the eye rolls of the staff (the spring rolls do compensate!) and if being out and out ignored doesn't tend to hamper your dining experience, then 'The Economy Shoe Shop' is a great stop off for those casual enough to ignore the service. read more

I used to go to the Shoe Shop quite frequently, jonesing for their oh-so-popular nachos and a pint of beer; however, as the years have passed so has my desire to spend any time at this establishment. Every time I end up here, I always say I'll never go back - but a couple of months down the road and there I am, at the Shoe doing it all over again. It's like a bright light and I'm the brainless moth, fluttering closer until eventually burned. The service is lack-luster and often rude, not too mention excruciatingly slow. But there is something about this place that makes it appealing. I don't think it's the food, and as previously mentioned I know it's not the service. You know what it is? It's the atmosphere. It may just be the only place in town that can get away with so many offenses but still be bumping night after night. The place just has a quality that makes it unique. It's quite big, with many nooks and crannies to choose from. In the back there are vaulted ceilings and different levels sporting tables of various sizes. There are vines and trees everywhere, albeit fake I think, they still lend a charming quality to the overall appeal of this place. So yes, I'll drone on about my distaste for this bar. I'll consistently say I'll never go back, but when patio season is in full swing I bet myself $10 that I'll end up here multiple times, enjoying a bevie and turning a blind eye to all of the things I find so displeasing about the Shoe Shop. read more

Sigh, I feel a bit sorry for the Shoe Shop. I love the decor and the atmosphere of the place - it feels very cozy and warm inside, and I love the "shabby chic" + nature feeling of the mismatched chairs, murals and giant tree overhanging the tables at the back. But, I have only ever had OK food and service here, and I feel like the place has really gone downhill since they closed up the entire back section a few years ago (I heard they were having money troubles). It really cut down on the seating and I feel since then the service and food have really been lacking. Last time we were there we actually had a waiter that was a bit weird - I can't really explain why but he just seemed sort of stunned. And they had two whole sections closed off until 6pm, which just didn't make sense (the sections were empty - there were no reserved groups using them or any set-up for anything going on). Even when people came in at like 5:50pm and wanted to sit there they couldn't. It always seems rather haphazardly organized here, in general. I believe I have had better experiences here when I've stopped in to have a drink or two with friends, so I would recommend it more for that (good stop on a "crawl" of Argyle Street if you feel like doing such a thing), or for a place to sit and sip a beer on the patio in the summer and people-watch. But that's about all. I think I want to like the place more than I actually do - I want to like it because it does have good things going for it and I feel bad that it has fallen on hard times. It is a bit of a Hali mainstay, has been around for years and is famous for having interesting decor, which is a series of twisted nocks and crannies and bars, and it's nachos. Some say it is a staple of Halifax. Unique decor that can be considered charming. Kind of like a hobbit hole with a giant leafy tree in the middle, that is decorated with lights, and is reminiscent of fireflies on a warm summer evening (I should use that line on a date). The patio is comfortable and currently affords a view of people walking along Argyle street, and the massive hole in the ground that the conference centre will eventually occupy. The service here is good. The selection of beer is good and the prices are right in line with the prices on Argyle street. The food has gone downhill since I first arrived in NS. I miss their menu that had a wider selection of sandwiches, like the reuben. The nachos are not as good as some wax lyrically about: cheap chips are poorly layered with cheese. The result is a pile of extra salty nacho chips covered in barely warm, greasy cheese. The middle chips are always dying for cheese, a sad sight. They are big enough for sharing between three people. As for their other menu items, I won't go on any further, other than there is a genuine attempt at being creative, but the result is that they need a revamp. I had a hard time with the star-rating here...I don't seek out opportunities to visit the Shoe Shop but at the same time I don't feel terrible about bringing people to see one of the most unique interiors in the city. So there you go, I'm kicking this off with emotional conflict. We all know the Shoe. It's been a downtown staple for years and even enjoyed a brief period of cock-of-the-walkery among drinking destinations as the hip, the artsy, and the scenesters took to its low-lit caverns for after-work-and-well-into-the-night bevvies. Packed with tons of interesting things to see from a ceiling covered with a fake foliage canopy, to the sculptures and art that line the brick walls, to the former glory of the now-closed atrium that connected the bar between two buildings. Unfortunately I think it's this unique charm that keeps letting the Shoe think that they don't actually have to try anymore. The drinks are hit-or-miss depending on the bartender and usually take a good 15-20 minutes to come back to your table, the food is hardly worth remembering or - for that matter - ordering (don't believe the hype for the nachos), and the service needs an intervention from some hard-assed, British-accented Food Network personality. Even an occasional smile would be a huge step toward removing some of the general apathy and disdain you usually feel when asking for just about anything here. All in all, it's worth a look for the coolness of the space, but I wouldn't bother staying long. Don't get me wrong, they are not the worst I've had, but not "the best" by far. Wait staff is hit and miss. I've been there and have had excellent attentive service (usually for business meetings), however going in there sporting a hoodie gets you spotty service. The Shoe Shop is not my first choice for a night out - I've only ever been there because others want to go. My experiences with the food and the service have generally been quite poor. No need to beat a dead horse about the service - we all know it's slow and sub-par. I don't drink so I've no idea what the bar service is like. The food has never been anything other than okay at best. The last time I went to the SS, I had to wait about 45 minutes to receive my veggie burger...and when I did get it, it was a rock-hard piece of charcoal. I sent it back but had to wait another 20-30 minutes for a dried-out replacement. The only perk I recall was the cheesecake that I had afterward, but it's pretty hard to go wrong with something taken out of the freezer and set on a plate.
