It had a fairly quiet ambiance which was nice since it was the middle of the afternoon. My girlfriend had the chicken bacon ranch pizza which she said was good as well. As a gastropub, one anticipates elevated, thoughtfully crafted dishes that showcase culinary skill and quality ingredients. What I encountered instead were dishes that fell short of those standards. The execution lacked the precision and care you'd expect at this price point, and the flavors didn't justify the gastropub positioning. I came with high expectations based on what others have praised here, but the food experience left me disappointed. While the service and ambiance have merit, they can't compensate for a fundamental letdown on the plate. Crazy crowded and they don't reserve tables for larger groups. I know why.... They don't have to! This place was rockin' but the hostess and wait staff did their very best to set our group and they did fabulous given the insanity of the crowd! The service was superb and would been anyway, but as busy as they were, we were well tended too and even had time to chat our servers. The food was well above top shelf and whine folks described the menu as 'pub fare' they must get to some super pubs because the food was amazing and delish! As you can see from the photos we ate well. The dishes were amazing portions and every dish was enjoyed and consumed With a smile! Tess was our main server, she was awesome, and she took excellent care of us. It was a pleasure to be there and we had a great time while drinking and dining there! Nice friendly gastropub. Dropped in for a quick lunch. I had the Jalapeño Mac n Cheese and Carolyn opted for the poutine. The mac was well done and rich. Next time I will share the mac and maybe a sandwich. Carolyn love the poutine, great flavors combined with skill. It's a must do again. Service was excellent and friendly. Second stop on our afternoon amble, I thought I should try their new space, opened last year after the fire closed the original. What a lovely spot! Probably around half the size, the decor is a delight, with wood panelling, subtle lighting and generally a cozy feel. There's a covered, all season deck by the front door, with a seasonal uncovered patio on the street, which is where we sat. We only came for a drink and enjoyed a couple of excellent Chambry wheat beers. The beer menu was one of the original hooks at the Goat, but it's a lot shorter now. Still something for everyone, including the devilish Delirium Tremens, for those looking to take the Short Path. The place was very busy early afternoon and apparently trade runs a lot later now it's down on Argylle, rather than tucked away on Grafton. Staff are, as ever, delightful and efficient and it looks like, risen from the ashes, the Goat is ready to retake its place among the premier establishments in Halifax. read more

There's been some good buzz from what I heard from friends and locals, so I had some lofty expectations heading here. The atmosphere was pretty great; "ritzy ambiance" would be how I would describe it. Our group arrived for dinner at around 7, so it was expected that the staff would be tied up during peak dinner hours. We made our order at around 7:15 and got our dishes about half an hour later. My selection was the Caribbean Club (featuring fresh jerk lobster!) with truffle fries as the side. The club didn't have as much lobster as I was hoping for that special seafood kick, but I still enjoyed it. Might've been a tad too salty for me. The portion size is small when comparing it to its price, so you'd have to get a side to fill you up. You can tell that the truffle fries are Stubborn Goat's specialty. While the truffles and aioli offer a nice break from the monotony of consuming fries, they're still salty and not enough to distract me from being full. I left the place feeling completely whelmed. Decent spot in downtown Halifax. Stopped in for a late lunch after visiting the Citadel. Service was extremely friendly and they were very accommodating for our infant. Ordered a bunch of different foods, including mac and cheese, chicken wings, the lobster club, and lobster poutine. I'm not a poutine purist, so this was fairly decent. I liked the poached egg on top, which eventually mixed with the cream sauce and gravy. The mac and cheese was decent, though needed a bit of salt. Not a ton of lobster this time around, but that doesn't appear to be the norm. The lobster club was great, though they only have rye bread, which wasn't our favorite, but not bad. The chicken wings were greasy, though the sauces were quite good. I got both on the side and dipped as I saw fit. My favorite combo was the Buffalo sauce with the truffle honey - sweet plus heat. [And here's the promised second part. Apologies, as it's also a long one. Darn character limit.] After enjoying my initial visit and wanting to try more of the menu, I decided that this would be a great location for a dinner celebration of my 30th birthday. After some reservation snafus, when the day came, I showed up and the long communal table on the main floor was set up for us. It can seat about 16, but with some cancellations and the typical no shows, the group totaled about a dozen. This extra space came in handy actually, as there was a noticeable lack of coat hooks on the posts near the table; definitely something that needs to be remedied in a country like ours. I partook in a couple birthday drinks while my guests filtered in and I took another look over their menu. I definitely wanted to try some of their 'social plates' this time around, and I settled on the shamelessly named Balls (meatballs in harissa, a Tunisian chile sauce) and deep fried deviled eggs. I would assume that I haven't attended enough social functions in my time, as I can't recall ever having had a deviled egg. The concept of this take on this classic finger food was intriguing to me as it can't be an easy feat to devil the eggs, then reconstruct them and deep fry ithem without turning your fryer into a horrific mess. For my main I was reeled in by the temptation of their smoked Oulton's pork chop. I had a good time chatting to the great people who came out to fete me, working my way up and down the long table so that no one was ignored, sipping our drinks while we waited for our food to arrive. The food came out extremely staggered unfortunately, and it was really noticeable to all as some politely waited for others' food to come. I got a delayed notice that they were out of the pork chops, so I went with the shepard's pie, which basically doomed the birthday boy to get his meal last. Luckily I had by Balls and other spherical apps to eat, and my girlfriend's food to steal as well. My deep fried deviled eggs came first; two eggs with crispy, golden brown breading on the outside, they were smooth and creamy on the inside. Again, I'm not 100% sure how they pulled it off, but I'm glad they did. Even my girlfriend, who is completely opposed to regular boiled eggs, was a fan. Deep frying tends to have that effect on foods, I suppose. The Balls came out piping hot, three sizable meatballs in a pool of harissa. They were nicely browned on the outside, moist inside and seasoned well. They were good, but no minds were blown by the Balls. I stole some fries from one of my friends and they were a big win. Seasoned with black truffle salt, they were wonderfully crisp and salty. Everyone was a fan and although some found them just a bit too salty, they were right up my alley. My other half went with a pizza topped with roasted chicken, peanut sauce, fresh coconut, sriracha and peanuts. Basically some of the best things from Thai cuisine on top of a pizza and fired up in a brick oven. The thin crust pizza is crisp for the most part, although I find most thin crusts somewhat soggier and limp towards their tips, at the centre of the pizza. The toppings were as great as you'd expect, with a great peanut flavour throughout the slice and a little garlicky zing from the sriracha. Another friend's Hellfire pizza proved to be a spicy restaurant dish that actually lived up to its name as this was a scorcher. The toppings are described as "chiles and more chiles" on the menu, and I don't doubt that as it put both myself and my heat-tolerant friend to the test. To my complete lack of surprise, my main did come last. With Northumberland lamb, sweet peas and corn in an iron skillet, I had high hopes for it. But first, I had to let it cool off for several minutes and it was still quite hot when I was impatient enough to dig in. Damned iron. Mine came topped with some jus, although a friend who had also ordered it hadn't gotten any, so we weren't sure if it was supposed to or not, but I was glad mine did as it added more flavour. I found the meat fairly moist, although not distinctly lamb-ish, which was a little disappointing but it was still decent nonetheless. While a few things definitely need to be polished, the servers here and the (most of) the food are quite good and worth a visit, and I definitely want to come back to continue to work my way through their menu. We were absolutely freezing the entire time and our food became cold almost immediately. Speaking of food, our app never arrived. We ordered it before we ordered our main courses and after quite a long while our mains arrived. When we mentioned we never received our appetizer we were told "don't worry you won't need to pay for it" uh YEAH I'd sure hope I'm not paying for something that didn't arrive... we were told later it was never even prepared...The mains were fine but we were not compensated for our app never showing. Really, really liked it here. The Stubborn Goat had a really chill and relaxing vibe that was perfect after a full day of sightseeing. The decor was nice. Dark, with lots of wood and a modern/industrial feel. It was a Monday night, so I'm sure we didn't get the brunt of the crowd that probably shows up on weekends. Even though there were tables available, we opted to sit at the bar so we could watch the Olympics while we ate. The bartender recommended that we could have a decently sized meal of one big dish and two small plates, and he recommended a lot of great options. Luckily, we loved everything we tried: Roasted Brussels Sprouts - I always love Brussels sprouts, and these were no exception. They were roasted perfectly, with the crispy brown edges that I love. The bacon was delish, and even the mayo added a great flavor that I would have never tried on my own. Risotto Croquettes - my husband loves risotto so I knew we were trying them as soon as the bartender mentioned them as one of his favorites. The flavor was really good, and it wasn't as rich or dense as I worried it would be. The risotto had a great mushroom flavor and the sauce was delish. House-made Sausages - I was actually surprised at how much I liked this! Two sizeable sausages on a bed of mashed potatoes, with some sauerkraut and a mustard sauce. I usually don't like bar food but TSG really has this "gastropub" thing down! We finished off our meal with a couple glasses of Benjamin Bridge Nova 7, which I've fallen in love with since visiting Nova Scotia. The bartender was attentive without being nosy, and really kind. Rolled up to this spot on a late May Thursday night and almost couldn't get in--SGG was popping! My boyfriend and I ate dinner on the loft and had a great view of the live acoustic (and other diners below, if people watching is your thing). SGG is definitely the trendy kid on the block with 2 floors of exposed brick, chalk art and Edison light strings galore. More importantly, a diverse and creative alcohol and food menu. Of the chilies mac & cheese, fried chicken sandwich, deviled eggs and blue cheese burger--only the burger disappointed, because Server didn't take a temperature and it ate like a sloppy, bland mess. You'll note they don't course out their dishes for a more "social dining experience" (read: maybe you'll get your app in 5 minutes or maybe it comes after your entrees arrive...perhaps you watch your partner start his entree, and you're mournfully still picking at the app). A few months back we had a couple of very good friends visiting. From Halifax, they've been living overseas for the past several years and we were all looking forward to catching up. One of the couple is a big craft beer fan who departed before the whole local mirco-beer explosion. I wanted to take them to Stillwell, but was out voted citing more more substantial food options. So we picked the Goat as what we thought would be a happy medium. We made the journey downtown, circled around the block dozens of times, parked in Sackville (joke), climbed over the snowbank and after a freezing walk made it to the Goat. We found seating upstairs. Our waiter came and took our drink order right away. He was knowledgeable about craft beer and made some good recommendations to my friend. He was also pretty helpful when trying to steer my friend with a gluten allergy towards suitable menu items. However, the server reeked of cigarette smoke and had obviously just ducked out for quick puff. As a non-smoker, I find the smell of second hand smoke gross. Thankfully the guy took our order and left quickly and the smoke smell went with him. There was a large table that shared the upper level with us that was full of people who were obviously having a good time. A little too good in fact; the table of rowdies was several tables away from us and yet they were so loud that we couldn't have a conversation unless we yelled. A couple of them would periodically disentangle themselves from the table, stumble to the bar, loudly proclaim how drunk they were, do a shot and then stumble back to the table. Oh, and all the while taking duck-face selfies. At least a few times I saw some of the patrons fall down they were that drunk. Our server seemed to be the only waiter on the floor and had to deal with these guys and all the other tables. We barely saw him. There was a manager or owner type who was getting hugs, fist bumping, and taking selfies with the rowdies. I assume he was a manager as he seemed to have the run of the place- going behind the bar and to the kitchen. Not once did I see him do anything to help out the server or try to manage the more out of control patrons. We outlasted the rowdy table and they stumbled off after somehow managing to remember their debit pins to pay their undoubtedly huge bar tabs. Most of the evening was spent trying to avoid drunk people and talk over them. What should have been great night out showing our friends a new, hip place was totally ruined. The whole reason for coming there, the food- was un-remarkable and expensive. A table of four, we had four small plates and a drink each and our bill was over $120. We later asked the server about the group. He apologized that he'd been absent most of our visit and for the loud group. At least that was something. He said the table was full of downtown bar staff who were there for an appreciation night and were getting treated drink specials. I can understand that everyone needs to blow off some steam but we didn't "appreciate" it. Really at that point you should be asked to leave the bar. read more

They have a great selection of beer ranging from all different prices sort of like $5-500! 500 only because they have a special utopias beer in which there is only 6 in the province. Aside from beer which I had many different types of, there menu is also great. The pizzas are awesome stone oven baked on nice flatbread with very fresh herbs and other ingredients. Now when it is your first time at the pub you will most likely stay on the main floor seated or at the bar. Unless you go on a Saturday which I did last week! The Goat has a big second floor upstairs that gets packed on Saturdays and I mean packed. It is so much fun as there is great music and an overall amazing atmosphere. Fresh lobster is a treat for someone like myself who is from a prairie landlocked province. The flavor of the dish was pleasant yet mild. But I was looking on the table for additional seasoning or spices like chili flakes to jazz up the flavor a bit. The scallop ceviche also seemed to lack flavor. There were a lot of scallop in the dish. The portion size was a decent amount to split with my boyfriend. It wasn't horrible but again nothing really jumped out as extra special here. It was fresh, simple and once again mild in flavor. Finally the seasonal beet salad seemed to lack salad dressing. This dish was attractively plated with large slices of yellow and red beets. The salad was fresh and pleasant but nothing too special in my opinion. I felt like I was eating dry mixed greens and beets because there was so little salad dressing. I could see if the goal here is to let these fresh and local ingredients shine by minimizing on the extra flavoring. I could totally respect this goal.
