This review is from the perspective of a volunteer. The Ecumenical Hunger Program is an amazing organization that has such a great impact in the community in East Palo Alto. We connected with their volunteer coordinator and got a group out to volunteer in both their food bank and community closet. Food bank volunteering consists of sorting and stocking and preparing ready-made boxes for weekly distribution. Community closet volunteering consists of sorting clothing and home goods. This place has let me down for the last time. I'll never go back to these people again. My son and and I had come to go through the clothing warehouse because we were looking at getting jobs and the Mexican lady that was working that day was very mean to us she refused to give us any time to look for clothes and all of the clothes were jam packed I'm only 5 ft tall so I could barely reach any of the clothes and then they're so packed on the one young thing I can't even move them to see the size and then I didn't get I didn't even get anything that fit me you know cuz all she did was rush me she didn't help me at all she didn't give me anything I think they're prejudice in there and they're very greedy or are there just hoarding you can't w**** at God's God's blessings you won't get anywhere I don't suggest going there not if you're white read more

I'm writing this from the perspective of a volunteer and former board member. I've been involved with EHP over the past several years and never have I seen such a caring organization, that is so well run and provides such help and impact to the community. While it's based in East Palo Alto, EHP provides food assistance as well as clothing, furniture, holiday gifts, backbacks for children as well as support and advocacy, to people throughout San Mateo County. One of the things I also love about this organization is that they allow children to help volunteer. I have a 12 year old son who has come with me a few times to do holiday volunteering and I find it such a positive experience to show children young, how you can help others in the community. Highly recommend EHP if you are looking for food assistance or items in a time of need as well as to those looking for a non-profit to volulnteer with or donate too. read more

Ecumenical Hunger Program does PHENOMENAL work for East Palo Alto and surrounding communities. They provide numerous services, such as legal services, food, and even a store of second-hand clothes, so everyone can have the experience of shopping when they need clothes whether they are in need of a suit for an interview or new baby clothes for their growing infant. The coordinators on the floor are so light-hearted and friendly and truly care. They're excellent with youth volunteers as well. I been with EHP for almost 20 years as their bookkeeper. I've stayed with the organization because of their honesty and integrity. 85% of donations go to help the clients. Most of their donated funds are from individuals, Their are no government grants. Programs include, food boxes year round. Special holiday meal boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas & once a week an evening meal. there is a children programs which including a holiday party and Santa, filled backpacks for back to school and summer lunches. There is a clothes closet for all ages with a section for interview clothes & prom dresses. A warehouse with household items and furniture for the clients to take home. I've seen people's lives turn around because receiving that food box once a week, or going to the holiday store to find gifts for their children is what helped get them and their family through a really rough period in their lives. read more

I love the idea of this program. I wish I could say that I had a positive experience with it, but, sadly, I'm left feeling that the donation coordinator has more important things to do than to help people trying to donate items. After 35 years in the Bay Area, we've retired and are moving out of state. I was excited about the idea of donating items (that are in good condition but which we no longer need) to be used by less fortunate families in the area. I called and left a message with Donald, the donation coordinator. I called again the next day and left a second message. I called a third time and finally got to talk to Donald, who had listened to both of my messages but not returned either call. We talked about the items I have to donate and agreed that I'd send photos of the items. I took photos and emailed them asking if any of the items could be of use to EHP. When I didn't hear back, I resent the email again the next day. No response. I'm not sure what's going on with donation intake, but clearly the common courtesy of responding to potential donors isn't a priority!! read more

EPH is an exceptional place with wonderfully kind people. The help they give their community is so needed and appreciated by those that use their services. From the staff to the volunteers, they help everyone that comes in in a very loving and unprejudiced way. The Director, Lesia, is untiring in her work and still ALWAYS has a smile for everyone. I am a volunteer 2-3 times a week and the reason I keep returning and adding more volunteer time is because of the staff. I am always greeted, treated with respect and made to feel I am an important member "of the team". I have also loved meeting the variety of people who come for help. From a young mother needing baby clothes to a senior needing a suit for church, to a family needing a little help with food to a man looking for a chair, they all come and someone helps . read more

This place is awesome, they would give out food every business day to anyone who needed it and they still do, but because of they are only giving out food 3 days a week that way the staff have time to clean up and prep. If you need food you can show up either Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday the first food pickup time is between 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. in the second food pick up time is in the afternoon between 2:30 and 4:30. These guys also give out clothing and furniture to anyone who needed oh, I know times have changed because of covid-19 you would always want to call first. Everything they get is donated and it's all really nice stuff and they only accept it if it's in really good condition. The way one of the employees described it to me is that they wouldn't want to give you something that they wouldn't want themselves. These guys are doing so much to help the community and they always operate under staff. The program is called ecumenical hunger program oh, and their model is they're giving you a hand up not a handout. I would highly recommend this place if you need help. At least give him a call. If you call when you don't get through it's probably because they're busy doing so much other stuff just call back later because these guys always operate under staff and they're doing the best they can to help the community. read more

Great program run by great people!. We had a large quantity of household items and some furniture, lamps etc, all in very good condition but needed a pickup in a relatively short time frame. I learned about EHP from a neighbor, gave them a call and spoke to very nice woman named Kesha, who arranged for a pickup 5 days later. EHP's mission is to assist local families and individuals who are experiencing economic and personal hardship. EHP provides food, clothing, household essentials, support, and advocacy to the community to sustain them through immediate crises and to help them regain stability and independence. I am also very surprised at the negative review of EHP. They have reached out and helped my son and I in more ways than I can count.... Every single person...I have encountered has been very professional....and caring. This goes for the delivery drivers, the warehouse workers, and inside the office...especially Lesia Preston, and Leah!!! I was at a very low point, and they gave me a help up...and made me feel like a human being...and not someone looking for charity. I have a completely different perspective about EHP than the previous reviewer! I have been donating to EHP for years and, unlike some other organizations they provide free food, clothing, furniture and toys/bikes to those in need. I have also volunteered for EHP on an annual project sorting clothing and materials that Stanford students discard as they graduate and move on. I have found the EHP staff to be organized, friendly, hard working, and fabulous. Please check them out as a potential place to give your clothes, furniture, computers and children's items. What a wonderful non-profit. I went to drop off some items for donation that I no longer needed and the women there were so helpful, kind and hilarious. There is no other way to really explain it other than they were like family. They were so grateful of my donation and I am so happy that they will be able to find a home for my items. I was a homeless veteran for eight years when I was blessed to get a place of my own this month, but I had no furnishings and had been turned away by several local organizations. That's when a friend of mine told me about EHP. He drove me there and I was blessed and amazed! The staff was so kind and extremely caring. I was truly shocked with all that they provided for me: cookware, appliances, a totally gorgeous dinette set, a desk, bookcase, vacuum cleaner, etc. I still can hardly believe it! Life has been really hard these last few years, but EHP made starting over so much easier. I truly appreciated their wonderful staff. We are moving, and had scheduled a Salvation Army pickup for a large quantity of good furniture that we won't have space for in our new house. SA canceled without telling us, and we were so stressed out. I found EHP online, called them on very short notice, and Kesha was friendly, helpful, and got us squeezed in for a pickup the very next day. She gave me a 3 hour window, and Juan came 15 minutes into the window, was extremely professional, courteous, and capable. He took apart large pieces, moved all of it out to the truck himself, and was such a nice and efficient guy that I want to get his info in case we ever need to hire movers for another move.
