I love everything about 9lives - the staff, the vision, the vets and the services. They are a lifeline for many of us in rescue offering low cost spay and neuter for community cats. I also often recommend them for people's pets as well. The vets do excellent work - they will cancel cats with upper respiratory issues - so they don't take chances. They provide an honest assessment for those tough conversations and give you the info you need to make a decision. I trust their advice and their work. A call out to the staff at the desk - they have a tough job and they do it well. I could not be excited that they are expanding services. A dental for a community cat can mean the difference between release or euthanasia so the more this service can be offered the better. Thank you, Jo for allowing Gavin and I to tour the clinic. I shared that I want to have my own rescue someday and would like to see the operations to witness 1% of what it takes to run a successful organization. I have been fostering which is both exhausting and rewarding. Front staff, medical team, and volunteers rely on each other in order to run things smoothly and efficiently as possible. They do have an adoption center but it isn't here at this location. This location focused on spay and neuter and low-cost vaccinations. I did not know that The Animal Care Center, other rescue groups, and as well as TNR (trap n release) team up w/ Nine Lives to help fix the cats. It's quite amazing, how many they have spayed and neutered. The population has gotten out of control. Shelters are euthanizing for space. Irresponsible owners not fixing their cats. Heartless owners abandoning and dumping their cats. All contribute to so many strays... in dire need of the community's help. It really does take a village. I did reach out originally to see if they can take Mango, but he wasn't qualified per their intake process. Mango is a 4-5 year old orange tabby dumped on the field by the freeway off 101. He is fixed but I did not want the original savior to release him back so I have him currently. I am searching for a home for him but I will wait till the start of 2025 to begin. Anyway. Gavin helps me w/ my fostering quest, so naturally I want him w/ me. Jo was so nice and insightful. Clare, their clinic supervisor was very detailed when explaining what they do and how in a way that both Gavin and I were able to understand. We were grateful Nine Lives opened their heart and their doors for us to tour. I have found my calling. I save kittens. I save cats. I also save dogs but more to unveil w/ that at a later time. I feel that I was put on this earth to make a difference, to help and serve others and that is what I am doing - even if it means I don't get to sleep in or sleep early. Brought my kitty in for spaying services. I really appreciated the staff at Nine Lives. I spoke to Beth a number of times when I had a couple of questions about the process and also had to reschedule my appointment twice! She did give me information that was not accurate - I was concerned about the tattoo they put on my cat's belly after the surgery and requested that we do not get the tattoo. She informed me that she would note it on the service order which she did. Upon checking in on the day of the surgery, I had the pleasure of dealing with Amelia (hope I got the spellng of her name right) who was very sweet. She also noted that we did not want our kitty to get the tat. However, she was informed by the vet that this is not possible. She did call me to ask me if we should proceed or cancel the spaying. I decided that since my kitty was already there, that I would go ahead and get this done and not stress her out even more. FYI, the tat is rather tiny although it is in green :-(. When the fur grows back out, I'm sure that the tat is not visible unless you actually look for it. The process was rather pleasant and the staff were awesome dealing with us and our kitty. The cost of spaying was great compared to private vets. I figured that since they do so many for both feral and privately owned pets, they should do a great job and they did. We had an amazing experience with Nine Lives!  We got a community cat fixed last month and the process was quick and easy.  We received a call to schedule an appointment a week after submitting the TNR Waitlist form. Nine Lives sends clear instructions for what to do during pre-op and on the day of the surgery, they kept us updated via texts. We appreciate their price transparency and how they ensured we had our questions answered.  The cat recovered pretty quickly and is feeling greater than ever. The rabies and FVRCP vaccines included with the surgery made us feel more relieved for her.  Thank you Nine Lives!!  P.S. This is my favorite cat clinic ever. Both my two cats are from this clinic, and I couldn't be happier. They have an adoption shelter you can visit from Thurs - Sundays (open until 5pm). You are more than welcome to come visit just to give their cats some hugs and pets, they don't mind at all. This is a no kill shelter, so if any cat does not get adopted, they will take care of them for the rest of their time. Most of their cats are rescues, but they also have someone who flies out to Sacramento area and picks up cats from there and brings them back. For starting I am a VOLUNTEER at nine lives since 2014, for many years now, sweetest people ever. I have many cats and they all come to nine lives. Two of them ADOPTED from this shelter in 2015. Except I went yesterday to clip my cats nails, and had the most awful experience there with one rude worker. The second she came out to see me her energy was off, no hello, nothing. Not only did she KICK me out of the nine lives foundation building, but she cut me off from even speaking and immediately told me to go outside is literally the MOST rudest way. My jaw dropped. Even the other workers were looking at her so confused as to why she was kicking me out, mind you my cat was inside. And the workers were complimenting my cats sweater, as I'm trying to respond, this bitter woman is yelling at me to leave. All I wanted to know is if I could pay.. When prior to me entering , there's a one person limit, to which I purposely waited outside until he left. a white male was inside, to which the white lady was perfectly fine with him being inside. But the second I enter, she's raising her voice at me, telling me to get out??? NINE LIVES COME GET YOUR STAFF. Tell this lady Halloween passed already!! Cuz she's literally a witch. Terrible person, terrible attitude, whatever your name is, you SUCK lady, I'll gladly say it to your face again. I received a response -- no name included on the email -- "Sure thing. We would greatly appreciate it. Thank you." I mailed two boxes of my cat kibble to them. No one acknowledged to me receipt, no one expressed any appreciation, and no one informed me if they wanted more. I telephoned and emailed them and received on 04/01/25 this email "Unfortunately, we are unable to use this type of food as it is homemade". Again no name on the email letter. read more

Would not recommend this foundation. Contacted them about a foster and the employee that fosters took my rescue without signing paperwork and turned him into the foundation. My rescue is now lost and the Foundation including the employee refuses to return my kitten to me. The employee named Kay is the rudest lady you will ever have to deal with and is shady. The service was great-- we dropped her off no problem and picked her up a few hours later. They gave us a care sheet and told us everything we needed to know and be aware of. They treat all the cats with care and even though it's a 30 minute drive from me it was very worth it to keep my cat healthy. They also offer all other sorts of services for very affordable prices. I love Nine Lives Foundation. They are the only shelter I could find in the area that are doing in person adoptions during COVID. It is so important to do in-person rather than simply a video call because you have to pet/handle the cat and see how they react to your touch. You are also able to sit on the floor and see which cats will come to you and which ones are more skittish. Also, their website may not be completely up to date, so you may discover some new adoptable cats when you arrive in person! You have to call to make an appointment, they get booked up pretty fast and it seems they only let one family in every hour. My boyfriend and I got lucky and the appointment behind us didn't show up, so we were able to spend 2.5 hours here. We asked so many questions, the volunteers were all amazingly helpful and patient with us. They kept telling us to take our time, because they really cared for the cats and didn't want potential adopters to rush into a decision. The volunteers all know the cats very well and are able to tell their personalities in detail. They have 4 "cat rooms". One for kittens, one for cats, one for FeLV+ cats (these usually go to long term fosters where 9Lives pay to take care of them since they do not get adopted out often). The 4th room they currently have 16 cats they've recently rescued from a hoarding situation, these cats are not yet available for adoption but the volunteers are slowly socializing them. I'm very happy with my visit and I would recommend this fantastic rescue organization to anybody looking for a lifelong feline friend :) read more

Had my 5 month old kitten spayed at Nine Lives and trust them completely! I was definitely a bit on edge because I'm a first time cat mom, but my kitty was in good hands. Low cost spays done by veteran veterinarians, they have years of experience doing this and are wonderful at it. I even had a check up with my primary vet a week after the operation and she confirmed the stitches were perfect and healing well. My kitty was 99% healed within 2 weeks of her surgery. I adopted a cat from the 9 lives foundation some 14 years ago. She is a beautiful lavender-grey point siamese cat that was approx 3 years old, that was apparently abused in the past. She is very skittish and with a standoff personality. Despite this, I kept her, loved her and protected her for 14 years. She is now sick, anorexic, and wanting to die. She has a chip with an ID number, and it is scanned to 9 lives foundation. When I called to get confirmation of my ownership of this cat so I can send her off to kitty land, I was told by 9 lives that they do not recognized the number, thus they could not help me. This has left me in an awful predicament of finding an unaffordable place to euthanize Gabby. I thought that 9 lives foundation protects and supports cats at all levels of life and death. BEWARE and LOOK THRU THE MEDICAL RECORDS Adopted my cat here over a month ago, the process is painless and some of the worker there is friendly so two stars for those nice ladies. My cat came home with some medication because he was sneezing quite a bit and had some discharge, i used up the medication but he didn't get better, then I finally decided to take him to another vet. They looked at him and to my surprise he has a "heart murmuring" problem (something possibly about blood in his heart not all flowing towards the right direction) that was NEVER mentioned to me by 9lives and was downplayed on his records, so had I not went to another vet I would not have known this problem let along treat him for it. On the other hand, I understand the downplay is maybe a way to get him adopted faster, but while I'm taking on the responsibility of caring for a life, I don't appreciate not being notified of these potential serious problems, even after I asked about his past medical records while I was in there to adopt him. All in all, I'm NOT saying don't adopt cats from 9lives because I think those cats do need better place to live and they a deserve a loving family, BUT do look thoroughly of your papers so you have a better idea of what potential problem there will be once you bring them home. Or better yet don't trust the papers and the clinic just bring him/her to another vet for a thorough check up right after adoption. ========== (it's getting very long so you can just look for the second to the last paragraph for a short summary) ========== Also though he's been having this symptoms since day 1 and it's within the clinic's promise for free treatment, I still had to pay for OTC medication out of my own pocket. I called the clinic as I get super worried and wanted to talk to the doctor and maybe make an appointment but was told by nurse on the phone "Dr. Rudiger has 20 surgeries today so she won't have time to talk to you" I left my phone number with them and never received a call back. That night after leaving her a txt describing his condition again she offered to prepare meds for him. Mind you it's been a month, how would you know what he really has or how sick he is or if he has other problems without even trying to see him...? So no, I won't recommend even trust their claim that they will take care of their animal for free after it's adopted. I do appreciate the fact that you are able to exchange txts with a vet during after hours but if it just means mindlessly giving him medication that might not even help then I really don't think this is necessary. Lesson learned: DO adopt from them, DO look at their records, DON'T trust the records completely, DON'T rely on their "free treatment promise", and DO find a reliable vet to check your kitty out right away. Ps I went to Whipple Ave Pet Hospital. Per their referral he now has an appointment with a Cardiologist at Sage hospital end of this month. read more

They just want your money. Be aware. First time working with them for TNR. Trapped a cat that didn't need to get works done. When they called me they said the cat doesn't need works and will be there with the rest of the trapped ferals to be picked up in the afternoon. Without getting consent from the TNR volunteer, they administered vaccines and wouldn't release the cat if the pick up volunteer doesn't pay the full amount they charged for the cat ($82). When I reasoned that none of the procedures done got any consent beforehand, they claimed that it's a "common sense" if a cat doesn't need to get neutered, the vaccines will be administered and the TNR volunteer is responsible for all the bills. Frustrated about how poorly they handled this situation. And it's situations like this makes people less willing to participate in TNR. read more

Dr. Monica Rudiger is self-less and literally takes in all cats to her shelter - she is a Bay Area feline version of "Mother Theresa". I pay her back yearly with donations, I can imagine how hard everyone at this shelter works. Having worked in an animal shelter in the past, I know its grueling work. They are short on space and resources with so many cats, especially during springtime. Often feral, FIV+ or "last resort" cats are housed here and it can be crowded and hectic. Nine Lives Foundation does not receive funding from any government agencies. She runs the shelter on a shoestring budget with an army of volunteers, so we all need to help support her. In 2004, I was a poor, recent college graduate and looking for a pet. At the time none of the local animal shelters would adopt to me because of my unstable housing situation. Dr. Monica Rudiger had newly set up her clinic in Redwood City, and she took a chance on me and allowed me to adopt one cat. We adopted our cat name Iggy back in July 2010 his fiv positive, they have lots of healthy cats and a few others with health issue, but we decided that we are going to adopt the ones who get neglected because of their health condition and give them a better home, the staff and The Dr were very helpful giving us insight about what we need to know regarding Iggy I believed she said his life span for FIV cats is about 2 to 5 years , and Iggy was 3yrs old when we adopted him . They spayed and microchipped my baby girl and were ever so gentle with her cattitude. They kept me up to date as best they could when I checked in (my phone was about to die and I forgot to bring a charger). I brought my little boy here for his operation. The booking goes out fast. I was at work at 2 AM and I wanted to book a certain day but then that day was suddenly fully booked by 5 AM so always remember to book early anyways I immediately sent an email asking to be offered an earlier appointment if anyone cancels they emailed me right away for a next day appointment. It was great I'm so happy I got it done I was iffy at first because of many bad views on this yelp page but I would like to speak up to say I had a great experience. My boys incision looks great and it's healing very fast. They kindly offered a blanket to cover the crate because I was in such a rush I forgot to bring one and they also gave him some food while he waited because we were running late that was very sweet. I'm glad I came here instead of a vet because the many of the vets in the Fremont area are very scammy and they overcharge and will add unnecessary procedures to find ways to take your money the neutering process is only $140 and my boy is happy he will eventually stop yelling and humping blankets. read more

Don't go for surgeries I had two cats that went in for a spay a while ago, and while they did a good job on one of my cats, they did not stitch up my other cat well at all. We noticed there was a lot of swelling and pus from the wound a few days after, so we went to another vet. They said that the stitching opened up very quickly without her moving too much and caused an infection that spread to other parts of her organs. The vet also said it was the worst stitching they had ever seen. They had to do an emergency surgery which costed $900. We might go again for simple treatments that are cheap, but try another vet for anything more intense. read more

Nine Lives Foundation is a no kill animal Shelter founded in 2003 that started as a veterinary hospital and later in December 2004 became the Shelter that it is today. The Shelter rescue's Cat's that would otherwise be euthanized. At present there are over 200 Cat's homed here, some of which are very sick, have missing limbs or were very poorly treated and abused. Yet despite this Nine Lives haven't given up on them and are treated so amazingly well here. Once Nine Lives rescue's the Cat's they have a home here for as long as they need it, sadly for some that will be for life. After last months Elite holiday party that Nine Lives brought Orsen and Mayflower to (side note: they have now left the shelter and have settled in with their new adoptive family. Yay!) I have been volunteering here and I am enjoying it so much! Seeing first hand how loved and cared for all of the Cat's are, the staff here really do an amazing job. Aside from caring for all of the Cat's here they also have a Spay / Neuter clinic and do low cost Vaccine's, Dentistry and Microchipping. If you're looking to adopt a Cat this really is the place to come, all of the Cat's are completely vetted as soon as they come to the shelter and are of all ages and breeds with wonderful personalities. Adopted our cat, Mouse, from here and she's as good as they get. A former street cat given a chance by NLF, that goes to show you already how great of an organization. The founder, Monica, is one of the most selfless women I have ever met in my entire life and the world would be a better place if people cared even a fraction as much as she does. NLF's FeLV program is fantastic, the group will cover all of the costs associated with a FeLV cat you've gotten through them for the entirety of the cat's life. It's a great option for people who don't really want a cat but can't afford one financially, and gives cats that in other circumstances would be euthanized immediately. The only reason I'm knocking off one star is because they could really be more organized. They're in the process of moving to the digital age, but for the most part it's hard for them to always keep track of everything. This could be solved by utilizing some of their volunteers, but even the volunteer coordination needs work. They also don't always accept (or respond to) offers for help, whether it be fundraising, digitizing records/forms, or help with the cats in general. It seems as if a few people were able to keep the rescue running really well when it was small, but they're lacking the ability to scale and delegate responsibilities/tasks. They do an amazing job and I couldn't speak any higher of the work they do, but life would be much easier for everyone if they would accept the help that's offered to them! They did a great job on Neutering my male cat. they offered me a complementary nail trim and I said yes but when he was given to me i noticed a day after that his nails had a lot of cotton stuck in his nails and I checked all of his nails and they all had dried blood they definitely did not trim his nails well and went over the pink part of the nail and made all of his nails bleed. this is not acceptable and all cat owners should know to never cut beyond the pink part this is very disappointing. read more
