My husband and I own a couple rentals in the area and tell me why we would make so many trips to big box stores when we could have been coming here the WHOLE time? Tucked in a cute little area on the other side of the Soulard Market, we felt like we were going back in time walking into the building. We love supporting local, and they really have kept the charm of old St. Louis. It's adorable. BUT being cute doesn't matter if you suck. And they definitely don't suck. They have all the essentials you could need doing standard work on your house, plus more. I was super impressed with their selection for such a small hardware store. You're not going to find everything, but call and confirm because they are super quick to answer and help. And the service you get. Wow! Their employees are super knowledgeable and eager to help. It's an absolutely fabulous local, old fashion hardware store near Soulard with all the essentials and much more that has been family run for generations with much of the same staff for a while who are beyond nice and helpful. The store and staff are amazing, and it just feels good going there. They're especially great bc I'm always clueless on what I need to do the job, so they help me figure it out, take me to what I need and explain how to use it. Beyond being a hardware store, they also offer rug doctor rentals and a variety of services you can't find many places, all of which come with the best quality and service: - key cutting way better than a big store - window screen building and repair - glass cutting (wish I knew this sooner bc I've been driving farther to get glass cut for side tables and such) - pipe threading and cutting - blade sharping - window glazing - lock mastering and rekeying and others I'm probably forgetting. This little hardware store reminds me of the rural mom and pop shops in small town Texas. I like that Ace Hardware supports, in whatever way, these places. They have all the goodies you'd need here, and most of all are super helpful. Granted, it's a little hard to just paruse and look around without being asked 5 times of you need help since you're probably the only customer, but if you want help it's certainly there. I've been in a few times. Once I did not see what I needed (yeah, should have asked) but felt guilty leaving with nothing, so I bought something. It's big enough, but small enough and most importantly is not a big box store. This, combined with the internet, is all you need. And it's a block from my Soulard house! If you guys wanna carry Benjamin Moore paint, that'd be pretty fantastic. Just sayin'. read more

I give this hardware store 5 stars because I am never disappointed when I visit. They customer service is so great and the guys working always help me find what I am looking for (even when I don't know what it is)! I can explain what it is and they help me figure it out-they have even helped me put a light fixture back together after the "clicker thingy" broke! Thank goodness for these guys! I love supporting local stores and this is just about as local as you can get in my neighborhood! They also make keys which is so convenient since I seem to need copies made often. I will continue to visit Edele and Mertz as long as I live in the area for all of my "hardware" needs! I even bought an ice scraper/brush from them! Stop! Hammer time. Okay, so I'm not the first guy you'll see getting in line at the hardware store. Frankly, I don't have any business building things or doing manly stuff in general. However, sometimes these situations are unavoidable, so I might have to make a trip to Edele & Mertz. I've only been inside this store on two occasions. First, my closet broke. The landlord must have put a cheap pole in my closet because the damn thing collapsed within a matter of weeks. We went over the Edele & Mertz, and the clerk was very helpful in our search for something more sturdy to mount in the closet. We haven't had any problems with it since. Today I had to make second appearance here. We wanted to hang up some decorations for Mardi Gras, and I must have used the last of the staple for the staple gun. Therefore, back to the hardware store! I was greeted right away, and the clerk told me where to find the staples. He even did a follow up on me, even though I already knew what I was looking for. It's nice to have something in the neighborhood instead of driving ten miles to a Home Depot or Lowes. Altogether, a good experience! Definitely patronize this store if you're near Soulard/Benton Park. read more

Independently owned, but supplied by Ace Hardware, store gave me great service & selection however I can I use my Ace Hardware corporate reward card. They are able to give a wide and varied selection. I could see myself even getting basic work related janitorial equipment/chemical here. I just needed keys made & the new padlock. They were able to match the key and have it made while I picked out a new padlock. All done with friendliness and even a few jokes. Edele & Mertz Hardware Co has that small town hardware store feeling, but without the overpriced products. I don't know how they do it - but everytime I go in that place there is someone to help me out, and their products always cost less than the big box stores. Everything from tools and hardware to lumber to steel pipe - even new metal stars like you see on the side of every downtown building ($10 - makes a great gift). Seems they make a point to buy from other local dealers. For instance I needed some floor trim to match what is in my 1892 re-hab. They were actually selling it for less than the local wood mill that I could also buy it from. And both places were willing to get me this speciality design for half the price of any big-box. For you folks that don't go down this direction often, Edle and Mertz hardware is on South Broadway. The owner, Steve and the rest of the staff are incredibly helpful, you never have to wait or search for someone to help you. This is an old-school A1+ customer service business. As soon as you walk in the door you are greeted and asked if you can be helped. Then you are walked to what you need and then left to peruse. I can't speak highly enough of this local small business. I am an Operations manager and do many repairs in our factory myself. These guys are always well equipped with whatever you need, not just the household regular fare that is always priced competitively to the big box stores. They are always my first choice! read more

I live close by and this is the ONLY place I go for any hardware needs, and since I live in an old house they are many. From DIY-which the knowledgeable staff guides me- to more complicated contractor projects. Because of my limited building knowledge I absolutely need advice that I can 100% trust and they have never let me down. They go way out of their way to lend a hand. I didn't even know there was a downtown St. Louis hardware store, but lo and behold, there it is. They've been there since 1912. I've been a half mile away for over a year and no clue. They've even got lumber. I'm thrilled to not have to drive all the way to Lowe's or Home Depot for every little thing. St. Louis has a few family-owned hardware stores, but none are particularly convenient for downtown. I just wish Edele & Mertz would get a website. Even a rudimentary one. Don't let the "ACE" sign fool you; that's just their buying group. There really is an Edele and a Mertz. They're in the store and have been for generations. I knew a few. It's not what it used to be - as you can see by the pictures of former locations that hang in there. What it is today is tailored for the homeowner, business owner, apartment dweller, handyman, and contractors. They have tool, materials, fasteners, paint, gardening tools, cleaning products, and sooo many supplies for plumbing, electrical, and carpentry. Here's another thing: if you're trying to get something there on your lunch hour, they're real close to several places to buy fast lunch. Its notable, too, that you can pick up something at Edele & Mertz in less time that it takes to check out in a big box store. Why? Because there's always someone close to direct you and advise you and then ring up your purchase. read more
