I just wanted to say how much I love this hardware store! It is so nice to have a local store that has almost everything. I was surprised to see some of the negative reviews. I moved into the neighborhood over five years ago and I have never had a bad experience there. Those gentlemen that work there, might be a little eccentric but that's what keeps us coming back. If I wanted to go somewhere that is devoid of personality and professionalism, I'd go to Lowe's. I hate seeing these wonderful gentlemen criticized just because someone is having a bad day. I have heard of this place from multiple people some good some bad but let me finally decide. The owner sits at a desk not trying to interact with customers then this other gentleman that is up there by the owner is the rudest person I've ever met talks down to people, belittles them does not want to help anyone. For a girl that loves to be independent, I don't know much about tools and hardware! I was hanging some shelves when I realized I was short a few screws. I ran over here right before they closed with one screw and he helped me find exactly what I was looking for. I loved that you could get just a few screws instead of a whole box like at big box stores. I love to support local businesses when possible, so will definitely be back. read more

Unique neighborhood hardware store. Walk in with one screw in your hand, and they will sell you one more that just like it or different in some defined way. The people who are complaining about them not giving them good answers on the phone - Great! Don't come in the store and bother these guys. I need them to help me when I come in person. Yesterday my mom and I came to purchase a couple floodlight bulbs thinking this it's gonna be a nice friendly mom and pop shop. We should be an In-N-Out process. My husband had us have a couple questions to ask which we ready to do so from the minute we walked in one of the workers was more than rude kept walking away and not trying to help us. We asked the young lady for help however she did not have the knowledge so she asked the so-called gentleman again unfortunately once he saw who we were, he refused to help her at this point we were ready to leave. There's nothing that could stop us from not leaving or wanting to spend any type of money here I'm writing this review not to hurt a small Mom pop shop but to let people know that customer service does go a long way and for the owner to allow such a thing to happen is very discouraging as small businesses are hard to come by after reading previous reviews taking i my this gentleman reminds me of the guy named Frank in the previous reviews wondering if it's the same gentleman if so, why does the owner allow him to continue to work here and do this to customers very disappointed read more

Before you "TLDR" this and scroll past it, if you're looking for a summary of their customer service in just one word (or two): RUDE and LAZY.  But if you have a couple minutes and don't mind run-on sentences, read on.  So, I had been looking for a magnet tool (basically a pocket-sized extendable stick for picking up metal stuff) and instead of just pulling up Amazon on my phone and ordering it the easy way, I decided to look for a small business in town that I could buy from.  I thought the tools would make great stocking stuffers, especially for a family member with a bad back who uses a grabber tool (one of those things with the two clamping claws at the end) to pick up dropped items, but it's too big and bulky to easily carry around.  Anyway, I came across New Market Hardware on the internet and judging by their website that looked like it was done by an employee's tween nephew, I figured this was a small mom-and-pop store with solid customer service that allows them to stay in business with other options like Amazon at our fingertips--certainly worthy of my business in my book.  Or so I thought.  So I got their number from their website, which didn't have much other info on it so I couldn't tell online if they had the magnet tool I wanted, and when I called and Frank in sales answered the phone I briefly and politely explained what I was looking for. Frank said he thought they had one and that he'd go check.  Then a minute or so later, Frank came back to the phone, and in a voice indicating he had thoroughly completed the task that was asked of him and was happy to report back having found the tool, said, "Yep. We got one, it's 9 bucks."  Since I was looking for one that was long enough to use without having to bend over, I asked, "Do you know how long it is?"  Then Frank, in an indignant and surly tone (as if he was shocked I would ask such a thing) replied, "How long it is?  This is an awful lot of questions for 9 bucks."  That's a direct, word-for-word quotation.  He didn't chuckle or say anything indicating that he was being light-hearted or joking, he was being dead serious.  Given the current economy and prices of goods (not to mention it's the holidays and money is always tight for most people) and the fact that nobody would just buy something without knowing anything about it other than what kind of thing it is in general and how much it costs (even if it was 1 dollar, let alone 9), I was more than a little taken aback.  I had several other questions which I assumed he'd be happy to answer because it didn't sound busy even for a mom-and-pop (completely silent in the background), and thought someone who works at a hardware store (in the sales department at that) would be eager to sell me on one of his hardwares.  But even if they had the exact make, model, and specs (which apparently there are a ton of) I was looking for, and even if they were having a clearance sale and it only cost $1, I would never buy something from someone for whom literally TWO pertinent questions were "an awful lot."  Even if that is over Frank's quota of only answering one question a day (or month, who knows?) it was still something I needed to know before buying.  I'm not gonna spend my time. gas, and money on something if I don't even know it will do the job I need it for.  Call me picky, I just won't.  A word to the wise: With so many options available to us and with the corporations getting even bigger and the little guy getting even littler, the only way to survive in this market is to have something the corporate giants don't have and probably never will--good, or at least decent, customer service where said customer can talk to an actual human being and not an AI chatbot.  It'd be one thing if these answers were obtainable through their website (which you might want to check out btw, it's a hoot) by keeping just a basic inventory of their products so I wouldn't have to call and rouse Frank from his deep coma-like nap as he dreams about tasing pushy Girl Scouts who ask too many questions like, "How many boxes of cookies would you like, sir?" (I assume) and apparently annoy the hell out of him with 2 completely reasonable questions, but they aren't.  I've worked in retail before, so I know customers can be tough to deal with at times, but I was being extremely polite because you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar--especially in retail.  It costs zero money to be nice to people and hey, you might even get a new and even loyal customer.  But ya blew it.  And because this store is closed on weekends and only open 7:30am-4:30pm M-F, I don't see any reason to go to this store unless it's within walking distance, you have time before work on a weekday, and you're only looking for something that you don't need "assistance" with.  Unless you want to talk to Frank, I guess that's also a good reason to go. After exhausting every box store and plumbing supply company within 250 miles to no avail, I called this company. I was searching for an out of production older model toilet seat. The person who finally came to the phone told me that I should come in and measure the seats myself because I guess he didn't have time. When I explained that I live over 70 miles from their location he then asked if I had contacted any other companies. When I assured him I had called Lowe's, Home Depot, and numerous other plumbing suppliers, he said hold on I'll check. Within 20 seconds he came back in the call and said no luck. Can't find what you are looking for. Honestly if he had said at the outset that he just did not have time I would have been fine. But he was kind of an a-hole about it and I think potential customers need to know what kind of service to expect from a business. Reps are not polite. The times I've been there I have said good morning or good afternoon and they never responded back. I have said thank you at the end of the transaction and they never responded back. One or two times I could give them the benefit of the doubt but when I more than that they are just not polite. To make it even worse the Prices are way to high. I'm not buying from here and it's unfortunate because I want to support family own businesses. read more

Today was my first experience with New Market Hardware, but it won't be my last! I came in to have keys made ( a small order, but I like patronizing independent businesses every chance I get. They were friendly, and acted like they were glad to see me. Points for them. I ended up buying a trash can and a dust mop I needed while I waited; not only were the prices reasonable, they saved me a trip to the Home (Devil) Depot! Big Points. Like others have said, this place is a throwback to the 3rd Generation hardware store in my little West Texas hometown. I could spend three days in there and not see everything they've got cubbied away, but if experience with places like this serves, I can almost guarantee they'll almost always have what I'm looking for when I ask! I didn't get to see the kitty cat mascot, but I plan to get to know the place, so it's coming. read more

This is a convenient, 'old school' hardware store. The customer service is outstanding. I have always been approached and offered help. I am usually just in here getting copies of keys made. I find that when I go to Lowe's or Home Depot, it seems that they give me bad key copies about half the time. New Market is almost always on point. I haven't explored much more about what they offer here but i can tell you they are friendly and locally owned. The prices seem fair. Check it out. Its conveniently located in the Central West End and just a few blocks from Ikea. There is free 15 min parking out front. read more

There's this place in the middle of the Adirondack Mountains in New York called Old Forge Hardware where you can pretty much find anything under the sun. New Market Hardware brings back memories of Old Forge - only New Market doesn't sell novelty items, that I know of. I go to New Market when I have a hardware need and they are open. It's one of those friendly neighborhood hardware stores where you can get a handful of nails for a dollar. Everyone I've come across there is always friendly and extremely helpful - and you will probably need to ask for some help locating what you need or you could get lost in everything they have. read more

I bought some of those little differently colored plastic thingees that go on the top of your keys to help you remember which key is which. I bought them at another hardware store. I went to put them on my keys, and they didn't fit. I stopped by this place to buy some different ones. When I showed the guy working there - a jovial man with a seriously cool beard - he proceeded to stretch those little suckers to fit my keys. I had tried to do the same thing and almost hurt myself. I said to this man- can I compensate you in any way? (I had not bought these there!) He laughed his jovial laugh and said, "Nooo..." We proceeded to have a nice little chit chat. So kind. I tried to park on the public street in front of this hardware store. A man who apparently works at New Market hardware came out to yell at me and tell me to move my car. He had posted homemade signs on the public sidewalk that said, "customer parking only." On a public street? I pay taxes that pay for these streets. There was a plethora of parking on the opposite side of the street. Apparently this guy has nothing better to do (certainly, not servicing customers) than to heckle people for parking on the public street next to his building. He can be rest assured that I will buy nothing from his hardware in the future. read more

This place reminds me of hardware stores I have back home in small town Virginia. The shop looks like a crazy mess, but the guys no where everything is. Its crazy! They even have a mascot ( the cat) just like one down the street from my childhood home. The only place in the STL that I found a five gallon bucket and the lid. So they can compete with some of the bigger home improvement stores. I am going to make an affort to visit them first from now on. read more

My friend lost his glasses behind a wall at Watson Martial Arts. I went to New Market Hardware to get something to fish them out. They were closed! I tapped on the window and they opened the store for me! Then, they went and found me a piece of wire long enough to reach the glasses THEN they gave the wire to me, didn't charge me a dime. This place is a wonderful gem that people flock to from miles around because it's the last of a dying breed that has everything & knows everything about hardware. The big box stores have driven the rest of these great places out of business.. So, Christine, go to the big box stores & try to find someone who knows something. Where you can buy a pound of nails when you only need 3, and a plastic bag of 30 washers when you need 2. And forget about finding a piece for a 50 year old plumbing fixture. I live in the neighborhood, and have come here a couple of times to get keys made, which is always really fast and convenient, with friendly service. Most recently, I came in because my car key (with fob attached) was bent to the point of not being able to go in the ignition. Melinda straightened two bent keys, free of charge. It's the little things like this that keep customers coming back. Support your local businesses; they're awesome! read more

I love anything that is old school and local. We just moved to St. Louis, love it, and this store is literally 5 minutes away. I'd so much rather shop in a store like this rather than the big chains. (Had enough of that renovating our home in northern California after the wild fire of last October). That being said, I assume the person behind the counter on the computer is the owner. He needs to find an office and stay there. Probably the least personable person I've ever encountered that owns a store. (I've been there at least 6 times in the last 3 days. We're switching out light fixtures etc. and being an older building requires additional parts). Couldn't be bothered to say hello, smile or ask if I needed help. You are not doing your business any favors. I'll be back as the convenience out ways your lack of civility. I needed some curtain hooks/pleating prongs and sliding casters for curtains I am sewing and I couldn't find the specific type I wanted online or at Target or JoAnn Fabric and decided to try this store after a recommendation from a friend. It is one block north of Ikea, and the shop is floor to ceiling drawered wooden cubbies. They didn't have what I wanted, but the woman who was helping me earnestly wanted to find a solution for my problem and brought out various products and tried multiple combinations. Then she got out an ice pick and started making holes above the ready-made hole in the sliding casters they sell. I was initially resistant, but she said she'd give them to me for free, and they actually worked! She kept making holes for all 14 casters that I needed. I was amazed by her persistence, and am really happy she solved my problem. I'm sure I'd still be stuck without a way to hang my curtains the way I want them to look without her. She wanted me to have the casters for free, and I am now feeling guilty as I write this that I didn't pay for the casters, nor for her labor. It's so rare to find a store person who sincerely wants to help you. I will now be trying them first for my hardware needs. read more

Whatever you need is probably there, you just won't find it on your own. The helpful staff is the best part of going there. Checkout takes longer because it is handwritten, but the time you save by not walking three block in a big box store makes up for it. I love having it in the Central West End. read more
