Once I was feeling really sick without any diagnosis--even an ER visit had no long-lasting results. Then my opthalmologist sent me to a specialty hospital here. Right away, I liked the ENT doctor (of my ER visit, he commented, "At least they tried") and what he said made sense. I had sinus surgery years ago and I started to have problems breathing again so my Primary Doctor suggested I see an ENT specialist. I went to a specialist and he sent me for a cat scan and told me that I would need another sinus surgery . I wanted to get a second opinion and my neighbor suggested I see DR. Edelstein from her personal experience so I took her advise. When DR. Edelstein examined me and reviewed my cat scan and took the time to show me on the cat scan that my nasal passages where clear and he prescribed a nasal saline spray that would help me breathe much better and he was absolutely correct and I'm doing well. I am so thankful for DR. Edelstein"s knowledge and expertise and more importantly I did NOT have to have another sinus surgery. I honestly have no words to describe how breathtaking Dr. Edelstein and his team have been to me the past (I suppose roughly 6 months or so) having come from another institution which was highly reputable. Before Thanksgiving I visited my previous ENT MD, who I had been seeing for a while, complaining of sinus pain. I left for Austin Texas with my boyfriend to visit my family for Thanksgiving and on that Saturday the day before departing to Manhattan, I felt really sick all over with awful pain in my sinus. I was left with a diagnosis of "allergies" and given Singulair. I was hesitant beyond belief as I have had horrible allergies before and knew this was not allergies but went with it. I went to Urgent Care in Texas, and given an antibiotic. They did not examine my sinuses and believed it to be maybe a sinus infection or something of the sort. That Monday morning, I was in tears and up all night - I called my ENT MD, and she brought me in right away - As she scoped me she noticed that my left nostril was suddenly completely blocked. I was horrified and extremely sad. They suddenly ran a variety of tests and believed it to be two Autoimmune Diseases either Churg-Strauss syndrome, or Wegner's Granulomatosis. I sat in the chair of the ENT Surgeon which I had been seeing for quite a while and tears just streamed down my face. I couldn't believe that what I thought was just a deviated septum and a small something in my nose, like a sore of some sort had now because much larger systematically and a battle that I wasn't ready to fight. And, the potential diagnosis(es) were quite scary at 38 years old, who exercises, eats well, doesn't drink or smoke... Anyways, a slew of tests were ran on me immediately - all coming back clear. The institution and the head of Service threw their hands up and said "I have no idea what this is." Which honestly, when I heard that over the phone after all the labs and scans I had completed - It was much scarier to hear that their was no diagnosis and relief for me and that Tylonel with Codeine for pain and some Ambien to help me sleep since the pain was so brutal I woke up at 3:30 am every night in tears to help me sleep was the remedy. Was this seriously my life now? I searched and searched for answers to get a highly reputable, incredibly smart, wise, experienced, second opinion. My boyfriends mother sat down with me at dinner and told me to go to Dr. Edelstein immediately. That he had completely surgery on her daughter who suffered tremendously, and had remarkable results. And, that I can not live any longer like this and go on another day without answers, help and good care. I called the next day, and Victoria picked up - I immediately started to cry on the phone - I was exhausted, I was in horrible pain, I hadn't slept well at this point in maybe 3 months waking up at 3 am over and over and maintaining a full time time at a high level. I told her that my left nostril was block and gave a simple synopsis as to what went on - She immediately got me into see Dr. Edelstein the next day. I came in and was SO grateful for Victoria as I could tell right away it was very hard to get an appointment with him. So, I was so really happy to have a chance to see him and be there and finally had some hope. Mary, the nurse, took me into the examining room, asked me some questions, took my vitals, and left. Dr. Edelstein came in and spent HOURS with me. He was quiet at times and extremely contemplative over all my labs, my scans etc,. and I could tell was deep in serious thought as to what could potentially have cause the ulcer "did you fall?" etc. Asked me a ton of questions... He was doing some major detective work, and asked me questions no one else ever did. He had me do follow up testing such as an MRI, Pulmonology, etc. a few things but, he finally diagnosed that the awful blockage inside the left nostril was an ulcer. Which, had not been seen for quite a while, and that the previous institution was actually on track with the labs and the CT Scan in what diagnostic testing they had done, but just didn't quite hit the proper diagnosis. He exam and scoped me - Looked in depth at the scans and labs I had come prepared with and we were on our journey together. Signed, sealed, delivered. I was prepared to do whatever he wanted, whatever he said to get my health back with him. He had a multitude of issues to fix surgically which could not be done, until the ulcer was properly healed (healthy tissue) so that the chance of a perforation would not occur. He said "I haven't perforated a septum in 47 years, I'm not going to do one now." I had been prescribed some magical solution called "Wilsons" which was used 4 times a day, and Antibiotic Cream to heal the ulcer - It took months. I saw him every two weeks for him to check the progress of the ulcer. read more

Continued... Sometimes I would cry due to the fact that - I wasn't there yet, but he quickly got rid of my pain simply by treating the ulcer with the correct Antibiotics and Solution (Wilsons). As time went on, slowly but surely, his support in providing me with staying patient and calm through the healing of the ulcer as it would be in my benefit, and his evident expertise in his field provided me with paramount confidence in a health care provider I've never had in any other. So, I just went along with it. As I continued seeing him every two week, Alex would always help me at the front, and Dina was always helpful and kind to me as well. My mother came to town right before my surgery to meet him, and Victoria was kind enough to get us in to see him together so they could meet. Just incredibly caring staff where the patients needs really do come first which is so hard to find these days. That day, my mother came, Dr. Edelstein gave me the best birthday gift ever (it was my birthday that week in April) my surgery date! And, we were off to the road to success. The day of my surgery, I jumped out of bed, ready to go at 5:30 am. He had called me the day before to check in and go over a few things with me. All very normal pieces of information and mentioned how excited he was to perform this surgery on me. When I saw him right before surgery and before I went into the OR, he was so happy and excited to see me and get this going for me. I was touched as I felt as though he worked so hard to get me to where I was and also saw how much pain and what I had gone through for so long - He was ready to do his magic and healing! And, I was absolutely ready - For my very first time undergoing surgery, I have to be brutally honest, I did not have a nervous bone in my body. Not one piece of me was concerned, worried, anything.... I had 100% full trust, confidence, and faith that he knew what he was doing, was incredibly intelligent in the ENT Specialty, knew ME very well and knew how to take care of me and my delicate situation. I stepped into the OR, and everyone was so caring, and then I immediately woke up when it was over, and I think I came home with my mother and boyfriend and took one Tylonel. I'm still seeing him to this day, to check in on the progress of the healing and it's going beautifully. Just perfect - He gave me my life back, my breathing back, my sleep back. I am still healing and seeing him in 3 weeks and then a month to 3 months etc., and our time sadly :( will move further apart which makes me sad only because I adore him and his office so much. BUT, he saved my life. Without, my breath, without Yoga in my life, exercise, hiking, just everything - I was getting to be so sad, and when I was diagnosed with the Autoimmune diseases I was so hopeless by the time I saw him. I was in pain and felt like, their was nothing anyone could do I was stuck living like this forever. He gave me my life back, he gave me hope, he healed me, supported me through the entire journey when I had cried some days, and we made it! Dr. Edelstein fully explained what I needed, performed the procedure in a clean, comfortable amazing facility and has been following me post up for the past two months. Not only has he treated me really well for my recurring ENT issues, he has also diagnosed issues I have had that are not even related to his specific specialty and saved my eyesight as a consequence. In one instance, I was having pain that he correctly and very early on diagnosed as Shingles that was developing around my eye! I have been to countless ENTs to only have them say everything looks fine, but I knew everything was not fine. For years I've been suffering from sinus issues, infections, and discomfort. Here's the thing, Doctor Edelstein is a perfectionist, which is what you want to have in a doctor. Not only that, he has an incredible bedside manner and truly listens to his patients and uses his clinical expertise to follow through with testing and anything else necessary. Office a disaster. Sent for sleep problems. They chose an appointment for me in October 2020 when they would have sleep kits available. They did not. Told me to come back in three weeks. No kit for me and a 75 minute wait to see the doc. My primary care doc called Edelstein to arrange for a kit. I called the office to get an appointment. Was told they would put me on the list and call me. That was Three months ago. I called. They forgot to put me on the list. Call back in a week and they would have one. I called. I first me Dr Edelstein when I needed sinus surgery to remove polyps. A decade later I became ill with a host of symptoms. One of the less dramatic was nose bleeds and sinus pain. Dr Edelstien diagnosed and identified a rare from of vasculitis that affects the sinuses. It is fatal and often goes undetected. No other doctor picked up on it and as a relief I was being treated for the wrong illness. The doctor then helped me locate the top rheumatologist that specializes in the disease. And after scores of chemo infusions I am fine today. Me nose and ears have suffered as a result of this illnesss. Dr Edelstein still treats me for these problems. Dr. Edelstein is amazing! I had an ear situation recently that went on for ten days as I languished with my right ear completely compromised: I was at the beach, swimming, when I was swept under by a wave and thrown on the sandy bottom. Water got trapped in my right ear. After three days of homeopathic remedies, hopping on one foot, and trying everything I could think of (and read on the Internet) to get it out, I realized it must be infected: the entire right side of my head felt like it was stuffed with tissue paper. I visited a clinic at the beach--the doctor there said yes, it was an outer ear infection and prescribed antibiotic ear drops. A week passed, to no avail. I woke up feeling I was underwater with a bunch of shells rattling inside my head. I soldiered on. I went to yoga. I celebrated my birthday. I complained. On Labor Day, finally, back in the city, I went to one of those urgent care places. The very nice PA said he couldn't tell, really, what was wrong, but saw no signs of infection...he thought it was sinus related and suggested a nasal spray, but added if I saw no improvement I should see an ENT specialist. After one day with no change, I knew it was time. First thing Tuesday morning, I called and got an appointment. Yes, I had to wait awhile to be seen when I arrived, but when you're seeing the best, it's worth it! Not to mention that his office staff was super sweet and nice and let me charge my phone at the reception desk. One of the medical assistants, Samantha, showed me to the exam room. She is fantastic too!! Super warm, funny, reassuring, and real! When Dr. Edelstein arrived, I quickly listed my symptoms figuring he wouldn't genuinely want to hear about it, but I quickly saw that he was genuinely concerned, as he paused to ask me questions, and listened as I explained the now lengthy saga--he took great care and patience in diagnosing the situation. He looked in my ear and saw, with his microscope, that I had many particles of sand jammed in a canal right on top of my eardrum!! He used some kind of suction machine and another instrument to get them all out--it was a little tricky because some of the particles were quite lodged in there--and soon I was a new person, or my former person . I was so relieved...upon leaving, I immediately called almost everyone I know to tell them life had returned to normal--I could hear again! The whole experience made me so grateful for regularly, everyday, normal hearing. Besides coming in and saving the day with his expertise and know-how, Dr. Edelstein is kind, passionate about his craft, personable, and, dare I say...humanistic! Fifteen years ago I had severe sinusitis and a friend strongly recommended Dr. David Edelstein. I was delighted to find him to be half brilliant physician--half Sherlock Holmes. He nailed my diagnosis on the first visit, which led to his performing sinus surgery that cleared me up. Since then his mini-treatments and advice have kept my chronic sinusitis from ever again becoming a major problem. He may be the most thorough, most confidence-inspiring specialist I've ever experienced, and my visits are always an enjoyable "experience." Here's a summary of my 15 years of regular follow-up appointments: 1) I've never spent more than 10 minute in the waiting room. 2) He bustles into the exam room, says "Hi," and immediately sits down at his laptop to immerse himself in his notes detailing my recent appointments, 3) Then he comes over to the exam chair, conducts a thorough exam of my sinuses, and tells me exactly what he sees (for example he might say: "Left Maxillary is perfect... but I see a couple of baby polyps on the right.") 4) He then returns to his laptop and spends two minutes inputting these latest exam findings while simultaneously telling me what RX I need along with any lifestyle tips that might help nip the baby polyps in the bud. At my most recent appointment he prescribed an antibiotic. I asked if he was giving me the prescription slip? He said, "Your pharmacy is Walgreens, right?" I nodded and he said, "They already have it." He had just emailed the RX to Walgreens from his laptop. (Wow! That was a "medical first" for me.) Dr. Edelstein and Nurse Mary and the whole staff are excellent. After a decade+ of suffering from chronic sinus issues (including nasal polyps and a deviated septum) and seeing a few other ENTs around Manhattan, a trusted colleague introduced me to Dr. Edelstein about 1.5 years ago. He asked me so many questions about my condition, questions no other doctor had asked before! Medicine could only do so much for me, so this past summer I had sinus surgery to remove the polyps and fixed my deviated septum. Everything went incredibly smoothly. He has it down to a science. Surgery on a Thursday on the UES (very clean massive ambulatory center), first post-op the next day, second post-op the following week. The first 24 hours were rough (packing, anesthesia), but I was 90% back in three days and a full 100% less than a week after surgery. Because the surgery is internal, there is no bruising, the swelling is all inside your nose, and there is no change to your appearance. Family and friends that saw me soon after (FaceTime, Covid) forgot I even had surgery because I looked completely normal! And the results have been well worth it. I can breathe easily. I have not had any sinus infections or even a cold since. Dr E says if I do happen to get a cold, it will be easy to recover because my nose is open. Now, I just manage my allergies to prevent inflammation. Dr E says my nose is perfect!! He's wonderful, and I 10/10 recommend if you need an ENT. read more

A Miracle Happened to Me After years of suffering with my sinus pressure, my eye pressure, and not being able to breathe through my nose, I didn't know where to turn. When I first met Dr. Edelstein a year ago, I was a mess and pessimistic about getting any relief. I had been to many ENT doctors over the past few years with different treatments, and a few doctors wanted to operate on me. Dr. Edelstein told me, "I will make you better, we will make it happen." He had me allergy tested and ran other tests, including an MRI. He then told me that an operation was not necessary. He put me on a program to knock out a severe sinus infection that I must've had for a long time. Now I am on a regimen of a few medications that have eliminated all of my symptoms and for the past six months I've been completely clear with no more pressure. What a relief! I'm done!!! I always arrive on time & I've NEVER not waited minimum one hour to see this doctor who apparently thinks he's god! Well he's not! Every other ENT I've seen in my life does exactly the same treatment and exam all without the long wait and attitude in his office. Today I had came late for the first time ever due to a ridiculous amount of traffic and construction going on (usually I'm a subway girl, but with my back spasming since yesterday out of the blue, and a sleepless night, my husband took time out of his busy schedule to fight two hours in the car from Park Slope to make me comfortable in his car), and I even called them to let them know. They said no problem. When I arrived there were zero patients in the waiting room. I was so excited I wouldn't have to wait long and could get my throat exam and hopefully get home soon to ice my back for my spasm. OH NO! That's not how they work. They made me wait cause others might show for their appts. Mind you, an exam takes literally 5 mins. Also, I've never not waited an hour with an appt, so why should the patients maybe showing up be whisked into the exam room right away? Wouldn't they have to wait too as I've always done? So after 30 mins of sitting in an empty waiting room (empty!) a patient came in and they took them right away. Then another walked in and I asked if they knew when I might be called. I said, will it be soon? Their answer, "We'll see". WE'LL SEE???? Forgot you and your office attitude. I'm done. I'm getting a new ENT closer to Park Slope and with a nicer manner. And don't be fooled by all the New York Magazine best doctor BS. Every New Yorker knows that's all a who you know to get that press. read more

Dr. David Edelstein may very well be a fine diagnostician. I can't judge this. But I can judge his patient skills and practice and both are abysmal. I visited his office on two occasions. Both times I had to wait long past my appointment time before I was seen; the second time for over one hour. Dr. Edelstein is not big on answering questions or on explaining what he is doing to you. For example, on my first visit I had a tube inserted into my sinuses without any preparation for what to expect. However, I don't want to get too picky. To some extent such treatment is the price we pay for modern medicine. But being demeaned is not something that any patient should have to put up with. Not only did Dr. Edelstein fail to show respect by his actions, he actually resorted to making derogatory remarks to me simply because I was having trouble understanding how to take a test I was undergoing. I cannot begin to say enough to the positive about Dr. EdeIstein. I had suffered with a headache for months and had sinus issues for years. I was diagnosed with having a neurological issue by another doctor, who prescribed anti-seizure medications. To ensure the diagnosis, I decided to get a second opinion and saw Dr. Edelstein. After testing he discovered I had Sluder syndrome, which could be remediated with surgery. He was able to provide me with temporary relief with medications and upon completion of the surgery, I have been headache free.
