This place is really cool. Bottles only and you can smell the decades of cigarettes seeping out of the wood paneling. I really like the shape of the bar as well. You don't see them like that anymore. I love this bar. I have been hosting karaoke at Edelweiss Tavern for 7 years now on Fridays and Saturdays. I love the crowd I get. I get to meet new people every week. I also play pool and I love the pool room because it's away from the bar and restrooms so there is very little distractions or interruptions from non players walking back and forth. The bar is pretty cool too. Sofia, Oksana, and Julia are pretty cool bartenders. They are always smiling and the service from them is awesome. The price are great too. A young person's old man dive bar. New owners have recently purchased the former Wee Willy's and turned it into Edelweiss. They haven't changed much physically about the place but they have made this one of the friendliest bars you will ever go to. I am a regular at their Friday night karaoke parties. Oksana, the owner/bartender, pours with a heavy hand and a cute smile but the drinks are light on the wallet. They specialize in favored vodkas. My current favorite is the Gatorade flavored vodka, Dude, by Three Olives. I'm not sure if it has electrolights but that shit will light you up just the same. The bombers of Polish beer are good and cheap too. This is a good place for night owls. Whenever I have gone to Edelweiss, there has only been a handful of folks before 10 pm but by midnight the place gets pretty full. If you're looking for the ultimate karaoke bender, you could start at Edelweiss and then stumble down to Alice's which is a block or so away to sing your heart out until dawn. Maybe you can thank the hipsters but I find that the quality old man dive bars no longer attract many old men but younger folks looking for a good time. The night clubs with bottle service that were popular 5 and 10 years ago all seem to be gone. Who wants to throw away their hard earned cash on that pretentious bullshit, anyways? Went here to watch some of a Chicago Blackhawks game and I was the only patron. The bartender was very nice and told me they have karaoke a couple nights per week and open mic standup comedy Sunday evenings. They have a pool table in back and a jukebox. No food is served. I was there about 7:30 and usually people arrive later per the bartender. Kind of dark lighting, except by the pool table. read more

Came here for an NFL game. Decent drinks. Nothing special here. Thought it was an alright local bar until a group of 20 something's started smoking pot openly. The bartender didn't care at all until an older women started yelling about it as she ran out coughing with asthma. So much fun!!! From the first time I went there I've been treated like nothing other than a valued customer. It's basically everything you could want from a place. Great service, very friendly bartenders, owners are always around. Cheap drinks, good mix of people, pool table, dart board, jukebox. Sad to post this because I am a lover of classic dive bars, and it's close to where I live, and it hosts karaoke. Who doesn't love that? However, my friends and I were here this last Saturday night and had a pretty traumatic evening. Early on in the evening, I witnessed a male customer coming up to a table near me who seemed to be getting into an altercation with a younger woman and man. I overheard the male who approached saying something like, "Don't touch me", and when he left, I went up to the table and asked one of the women if they were okay and needed help. She said that the male who approached had been making them uncomfortable all night. I went to the man who hosted karaoke (not sure if he's the owner) and told him, "Just to make you aware, there's a man here is who making people uncomfortable and might cause further trouble. He might need to be kicked out." He was singing karaoke and nodded, which was as much acknowledgement as I was going to get apparently. Fast forward ahead, I witnessed another male spanking and grabbing a woman who was in our group. She was clearly uncomfortable, so I went forward and told him to leave her alone. This time, we again told the man who was running karaoke, and his excuse was, "They are regular patrons and don't normally act like this; I'll talk to them." They continued to be allowed entry into the bar and caused tension between my friends and me. Fast forward again, the second individual grabbed another of our friends when she finished her song, and we all approached asking him to leave us alone or get out. No action from the person running karaoke. However, when my friend playfully tapped the mic after his set, he got on the mic and aggressively told her to not touch his equipment because "it wasn't safe". He went up to the two men that had been causing issues all night and proceeded to complain about my friend touching a microphone and our group in general, and my friend called him out on it, asking if property was a bigger issue than our general safety. This escalated to a full-blown screaming match, and he accused us of not telling him we were uncomfortable, even though we had approached him about three times at this point. It was exhausting, defeating, and we all left in very low spirits. We were paying, respectful customers who simply asked to not be harassed nor assaulted and, instead of being helped out by the individual running the bar that night (since there clearly wasn't a bouncer or anyone else that would support us), he turned around and verbally assaulted us. Never coming back. I would recommend women customers to be aware of their surroundings here since our safety clearly doesn't come first. read more

Male bartender on 10/4/2019 was extremely rude. The card minimum went up from $10 to $15, and the bartender came up to me at last call and asked if I wanted another drink and when I declined he replied that it's a $15 minimum and to find cash and "just find the money." When I asked if he could just charge my card for the $9.50 I spent, he told me he could not and said to stop yelling at him. It felt like if I were a male he would not have challenged me. When I handed him cash, he replied "that wasn't so bad was it?" And threw the 50 cents back on the table, ignoring my outstretched hand. He also said to bring cash next time but there will be no next time. Bummer because I love this neighborhood joint, but this rude bartender put a very bad taste in my mouth. read more

Just came in from our Belmont Ave adventure. We saw the name on Metromix and decided to drop in for a few. On the tube was ABC then someone asked for the Bulls game. We were handed a plate of assorted salty treats. Metallica and Madonna played in the background, masking the murmurs of the three guys in there. One introduced himself, but the rest kept to themselves. For a Friday night where you need a moment to think and have cheap drinks without yelling, it's perfect. For the two of for three rounds of mixed drinks it came to $21. Not bad. read more

Nothing special. for some reason it is always listed as top Chicago bars in Chicago Reader and other publications. it is just an average three star bar. Happy Night, AKA Wee Willy's, is back! I discovered this spot just before they closed down a year or so ago, but it's back with the same ownership, now that the hospitable and sweet Janina is back in health. This quaint little Polish "dive" draws a mixed Hispanic, Polish, and Czech population, and some of the regulars will go out of their way to introduce themselves if you're an unfamiliar face. The bar is actually pretty clean and safe for this rough-edged neighborhood- the regulars won't tolerate the rascaltries that plague some of the other area spots, and most are quite coherent and conversational. Though standbys Miller, Corona, and Heineken are offered, the highlight is the giant Eastern European beers- the 1 pint 9 oz. Stiegl (Austria), Hacker-Pschorr (Germany), Zywiec (Poland), and Czechvar (Czech Republic), each around $4-$5. The juke is kinda lame- Scorpions, Metalica, plus Polish and Czech unpronounceables and they've downsized the stage & PA system, but there's a pool table. The owner didn't know anything about the name Wee Willy's on the door (I think she just kept it from the previous ownership), but it could either be a reference to an early comic strip or a ball player from the 1910s. read more
