Exceptional experience. My father and I produced a small book of collage poems and images and spent months searching for a printer who would provide the size, quality, and production support we needed within a price range we could afford. We tried and abandoned several other printers and were really despairing of finding one at all when we stumbled on Edition One wholly by chance, and I couldn't be happier or more grateful. Every part of the process of working with them was smooth and pleasant, from their extremely well-designed and informative website to the very supportive and responsive staff. I took a book making class that was co-taught by Ben back in 2008 (a year after this company was started). As I remember we were required to buy a certain quantity of books and at the time it was a significant outlay for me. Anyway, recently I was at my parents house and noticed that several pages were coming un-bound. So, I though I'd contact the company since it says clearly on their website: "We guarantee our bindings for normal use. If a page pulls out under normal conditions, we will repair or replace the book." Now, to be fair, my book was made back when the company was starting out, but the response I got from Ben was frankly unsatisfactory: "We really have no way to repair a book like this unfortunately. 13 years is a long time - the company was only a year old when the book was made, and at that time we used a small hand-operated hot glue machine. That type of binding is very different than what we use now, which is what we currently guarantee. The only thing we could do is to make the books again, but we'd not have the files from that long ago, and basically every part of our process changed from the presses right through to the way we finish bound books.  I wish I could be of more help." Essentially sort of offering that if the files could be found perhaps they could re-print the book. However, when I offered that I had the original InDesign files I got another email with this: "Putting aside the fact that the printing press has nothing to do with the binding, I cannot warranty a book that is 13 years old and bound with hot melt glue. No one could do that honestly - I am struggling to think of anything that has a 13 year warranty; there are simply far too many variables in play over that period of time." I have plenty of photo books that are well over 13 years old. If I were the owner of this company I wouldn't have thought twice about re-printing a copy of the book. Instead he decided to get defensive and not stand behind his product. Again, I paid a LOT (evidently a mere $622.13...Sorry Ben $622 is still a lot of money to me) of money to have these books printed back then. And as to not having ordered anything since? I suppose that's good since the books fall apart after 13 years...at least the ones made from hot glue back then. Save your money, go ahead and use Blurb. They will reprint your book with out a bunch of attitude. I have yet to have a blurb book come un-bound. For the record, I never once asked him to reprint it for free, I would have even been willing to pay something for a repair or reprint, but no, Ben just went ahead and assumed that I was looking for some freebie. I've worked with many other fine art and photo book printers before, and none have provided as great quality product, or helpful assistance as Edition One Books. I printed a small run (80) of photo books, and ended up making 8 proofs before the final product. My questions about tonality and color and other printing quirks were always answered promptly, clearly and without judgement. Oh, and prices are incredibly reasonable. The worst experience I have ever had. When I called the owner, Ben, to ask if could please give me a quote instead of the online calculator as I was unclear if certain features I wanted were custom and thus different in price, he was unprofessional and ceaselessly rude. When I asked if he could have more tolerance in helping me with pricing, he refused and told me he did not need my business. While I understand customers, myself included, and pricing can be arduous and annoying, I had already estimated one project with them, was getting ready to move forward and wanted pricing on another. Asking someone to simply be courteous and patient with an order should not have rankled him so. If an issue came up during printing, I do not feel he would handle basic interactions about remedying it well either. His staff is lovely and competent and maybe he just had a bad day but I would never work with this business now. read more

A friend of mine who used Edition One for her book referred me to them and I have nothing but great things to say about the entire experience. I have never attempted to make a book before, so the process was extremely daunting. I found their website to be very informative and helpful outlining their process, file specs, and book calculator. I reached out for a general quote and was connected with Scott. Scott was SO patient with me throughout the entire process. I had so many questions and he answered all of them thoroughly and was very helpful. When it came time to actually put the book together with them, Scott offered so much guidance and helped correct errors in my layouts. It was a lot of back and forth and he was always very gracious. As a retired architect with extensive experience preparing publications for my firms' portfolios, promotional pieces and designing graphics for AV presentations, I give Edition One the highest marks. In my experience there was always an emphasis on the highest quality of graphics, and printing. However, until this project with Edition One, I had not produced a book or booklet in hard cover for an even more important occasion - honoring a distinguished and beloved English teacher at a local high school on his 91st birthday, an honor extended by many of his students over his career of 32-years. This project was relatively small - only 52 pages, but with color and BW photos and text contributed by many former students and family. Bottom line: What Edition One did was utterly superb! Not only was their product absolutely excellent, but also, their work process was clear, efficient and easy from my initial inquiry, to consideration of binding alternatives, to preparing accurate cost estimates, to selection of the optimum binding system, to reviewing a proof and finally, to giving the OK to roll the presses! But the most impressive and valuable part of their service was their production of a pre-press proof and their help making final adjustments to it. I fully understood that it was my responsibility to catch anything that needed a change or correction. But I focused too much on the text. I failed to notice some small but very important graphic irregularities, which, had they not been fixed, would have been noticeable and very disappointing in the final run. The credit for "saving my bacon" on those graphic fixes goes to Polina, my contact there. After I said, "Go" on the proof, she contacted me again and pointed out the problems. I made the fixes on my digital file, and she took them into production. What stands out to me here is someone with the firm who did more than a strict, narrow definition of "Her Job:" taking my approval of the proof and passing it along. Rather, she was ALSO looking out for the quality of MY work! Today, I call that going above and beyond what could be described as her "call of duty." So. All told - for quality, for value, for service and for responsive communications, I'll be going back to Edition One with my next important printing project! read more

We approached Edition One Books to print one of our artworks. The fact that they have been around for a few years but have received no positive reviews on yelp was puzzling but we thought that we would proceed anyway since they at least did not have any negative reviews either. That was a mistake. Two of many problems that we had with this printer... 1. The final product that we were given had some serious quality oversights. A competent printer would have noticed these issues ahead of time but Edition One did not. It could be that they have their hearts in the right place when it comes to wanting to produce adequate prints but it would seem that they are still at a stage where they are experimenting and learning. 2. Any criticism of Edition One's work results in a confrontational diatribe by the owner. We saw that here on yelp in response to a previous post and we saw it in our dealings with him throughout the ordeal. The owner is one of the least professional people we have interacted with on any level and lacks the etiquette and demeanor that one would expect from a business person. Credibility is a company's primary asset and it is unfortunate and borderline criminal that Edition One appears to have little of it. The experience reminded us of those people that you find in college or at work who consistently attempt to make up for under delivering with an essay about why the end result is the way it is. The one star is for Edition One's ability to at least put ink on paper. We really question their tagline which states that they cater for discerning customers. read more

After looking high and low for a small run printer, I found Edition One Books. More about my experience in a minute ... Before them I used Blurb for a few years, but frankly, Blurb's quality control is horrible, and getting worse by the day. The customer is basically the QC department. How they calculate over 90% satisfaction has to be a joke. Yes, they will fix it and make another book, but after going through this 4-5 times in six months I'd had enough. You'll see if you use them. Horrible and frustrating experience - unless of course you like emailing a bunch of hipsters that acknowledge politely and tell you how problems rarely happen. It's the same speech over and over. Makes you want to reach through the phone and pull out their wiring. Then you wait for a few days and you get somebody higher up the ladder that might help. Get used to waiting and then hoping the next book will be right. I just don't have the time to waste! Plus, their sizes are too limited. So today I've received my new books from Edition One. They are beautiful! The minimum order thing is the only drawback, but they do send out proofs so you know exactly what needs to be adjusted. I'm a rather picky professional photographer, so I notice things others might not. Ben, the owner, was very good about fixing a couple of little issues that came up, and even helped find an alternative paper to achieve a specific goal I had in mind. He gets right on every email and issue, so service is beyond great. They do things by hand and they do them right. The price is comparable, but you have to get at least 5 copies. It's worth the end result! I will use them again without question. I will say however, that someone who uses Edition One might require more knowledge or experience than those using a company like Blurb. One reviewer here complained pretty heavily, and I did consider his post before ordering, although it wasn't based on anything tangible or specific. The guy was just venting and probably responsible for not knowing what he was doing. Perhaps he didn't want to pay for a proof. There are so may variables that you just have to pay attention. If your book doesn't match the proof then you have a legitimate issue. All I can say is Ben knows his business, addressed my concerns personally, and delivered a great set of books. read more

This is one of the worst customer experiences I've EVER had. Not only did they print my books BACKWARDS but the head of the company, when I brought up the error, spoke to me in an incredibly condescending way, he refused to be apologetic & was defensive the entire time. He then proceeded to tell me that he was NOT going to remake my books & that he didn't need my money. I cannot say this enough... STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. Highly recommend. So far I have produced three short run (x30) books with EditionOne. The digital print quality and standard of finishing is excellent. Great customer service too. Standard turnaround is two+ weeks which can be reduced with rush fees. It was very useful to visit their sample room to look at swatches and finished books. read more
