We go to have breakfast every weekend. Food: Great Service: Great Environment: New and clean

It's been a long time since I've been to Peoria. Before heading out, we stopped at Eggcellent. It was a busy morning, but we only waited less than 10 minutes. We ended up at the bar, which was good, because it was quieter. I ordered coffee, pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, and french toast. The french toast was slightly undercooked. That was fine. Honestly, it's hard to get it perfect. The staff was super friendly. I did appreciate they used Lysol to sanitize the table/counter. Good food, give it a try. Only warning, parking can be tough if it's busy.

Excited to check out Eggcellent Café for breakfast, and it delivered in some ways. The location is convenient with plenty of parking, and the wait was surprisingly short for a Sunday morning--though it got busier as time went on. There is limited space and seating inside, so timing is key to avoid long waits. The service was great! My server was attentive and even brought the check before I finished, which I appreciated, though others might find it a bit rushed. I ordered the Carnivore Skillet with bacon, sausage, ham, American cheese, and a side of biscuits and gravy. The flavors were great, but the food was lukewarm and the cheese was unmelted which took away from the experience. I'd return to try more items, but I hope they step up on serving hot dishes next time!

On our way out of Peoria after a wedding weekend, we were looking for some brunch and Eggcellent Cafe obliged. It was a beautiful day so we decided to sit outside. Frustratingly, there were quite a few flies that were pretty annoying. Once we ordered, the food came out super quickly. The potatoes were a hit and well worth picking over any other side. My eggs were delicious as well and the Eggcellent house hot sauce is super unique. It's the right mix of flavor and spice that it doesn't overpower the rest of the dish.

Review Visit: August 20th, 2022 Eggcellent Cafe was... mostly excellent. It was a nice and dreary day that started with the slightest of hangovers from a wedding the night before and a yearning for something delicious to fill our empty bellies. Doug suggested we try this place as he wanted to sample a place that wasn't a national chain. It had been on my list for awhile now so next thing I knew, we were snapping a fun photo with the sign and heading in for some food. I had been in this specific building before when it was Crust Pizza. I was instantly reminded how small the location was when we walked in and saw that seating was limited and tables were somewhat close to together. Things were far enough away where you could have a conversation with your company but it could easily be heard by the people next to you if you listened well enough. We were seated at a table and lucky us, we got there when the restaurant was half-full as within 30 minutes, every table was full and people were being seated outside. Our server was super perky and took our drink order and food order within a reasonable time despite running her tail off. Doug ordered the Irish Benny and I got the Eggcellent Combo. The cooks must've been in a good groove as we got our food in a relatively short order considered how busy it was. There was a bit of a funny moment when the waitress put my pancakes down in front of me and then came back a second later to top off my coffee and I tried to move my cup out of her way because I thought she had syrup in her hand and was going to douse my pancakes with it... but it was the coffee pot and she had to chase my cup around the table to fill it as I sleepily tried to keep moving it out of her way. Once my cup was filled and I was given the actual syrup container, Doug and I dug in. My meal being just two pancakes, two eggs, and two bacon strips (which I gave one to Doug cause he was eyeing it), it wasn't mindblowing delicious but it was just what a sleep-deprived-and-slightly-hungover me needed. The applewood bacon had a nice crispiness to it and the pancakes had a buttery smoothness to them. Doug on the other hand was in love from first bite. He has some culinary schooling so he knows that nuances to look for and Eggcellent Cafe knocked them out of the park for him. He raved about how his hash browns were nice and crispy, how his biscuits were homemade and how the basics were done to perfection. He loved the place so much that he looks forward to visiting again when he comes back next year for our usual beerfest shenanigans. He let me sample the hash browns and they did have a nice crisp to them. I took a spoonful of his sausage and gravy and while it didn't knock my socks off, it did for Doug. The theme of the restaurant was, to me, a bit of a hybrid of a coffeehouse, a diner, and something else. I couldn't quite place my finger on what it made me think of but it was all very nice, new, and well taken care of. I didn't get to snap as many interior photos as I wanted to be courteous to those who were eating and those who were being seated/leaving. I was quite surprised at how busy it was considering the location leaves a bit to be desired. It's not hard to get to the restaurant, it's just tucked away enough that you might overlook it or not be in the right spot to see it. The pricing is a bit higher than I eggpected but the place definitely delivers a higher quality meal than, say, a diner might. This is really an eggcellent place to get breakfast, even if my meal was more simple. I have some other friends that are interested in checking it out so maybe I will sample their lunch menu if and when we drop in.

We were leaving Peoria headed to Chicago to catch our flight but had a little extra time and looked for somewhere to eat. When we arrived the line looked way out the door, there were so many people waiting and we were worried it would take forever, but we didn't want Panera so we took our chances here. We were sat almost immediately being only a party of 2. The server was sat 3-4 tables at almost the same time and she went from one to the other like clockwork. She gathered everyone's drink orders and had our drinks out very quick. After that she went to the tables in the same order for food. She was very efficient, very kind and smiled through it all despite how chaotically busy it seemed. When I tell you we were there less than 15 minutes before our food came out I'm not lying. From the time we sat down we had our drinks and food in 15 minutes or less. The food was hot, fresh, and delicious. Service was spectacular and we were so glad we decided to take the chance with the line because they had things streamlined so well. On the rare chance we ever come back to Peoria, we will definitely stop in again.

Cluck cluck skillet. Tastes amazing and is available as an omelet.

We got here at 9:45 on Labor Day and were seated right away. Service is prompt. So was the food prep. Service is the best I have had for a long time. We will definitely recommend this place to others

South of the boarder (I don't know why they spell it like that.) Benedict. Two thumbs up.

I'm full sized man with a appetite to match, but this in fact was too big for my needy belly. The flavor itself was quite good too! Having tried many tenderloins around town over the years this one would easily make the podiums. Maybe not the very best but bronze is a respectable medal to come home with as well! A crispy corn flake breading fried to a golden brown was awesome Just needed a little spicing up with salt and pepper. The side of onion straws on the other had were flawless. Review Visit: February 17th, 2015…read more Silver Bullet in name only. There are no werewolf threats here! In fact, they don't sell anything gun related. Just yum related. Silver Bullet is a nickname for Coors Light. Which, in talking to friends, used to be hard to come by in this area back in the day. So maybe this place is named as a tribute to that beer? The Silver Bullet has been in East Peoria for as long as I know. As a kid, I remember this place being here, because I would visit the Co-Op Store next door (music store) to pick up some cds and music memorabilia. It was called Silver Bullet, Too at one point, but I am unaware if there was a second location. Once my friends and I turned 21, we started to visit this place, so the Initial Date is a bit misleading. My friends and I have been here many times before and after the photo you see above. Each time has been a great memory filled with deliciously cheap food, great drinks and a friendly staff. My friend Maria and I actually spent NYE 2016 here, counting in 2017 and despite it being slow in the bar, we had a blast. So what does the Silver Bullet offer? Well it has really good bar food at bar prices. I would actually come here with an ex-girlfriend just to get a good meal and shoot the breeze for a few hours. It has slots, a pool table or two, slots and some golf gaming machine. I will say that what I expected was a dumpy/low key bar since it's in a strip of stores and the outside is kind of plain. But once you step in, it almost has a restaurant feel as it is more upscale and everything is in really great shape. There is even a Beer Garden/Patio that you can go out and enjoy your beers while smoking or taking in the great Illinois weather. Sorry, this blog post has been all over the place. To me, Silver Bullet is like a real life Cheers bar. Just a fun and friendly place to go for some food and libations. So if you need a good bite and are in East Peoria for some reason, check out Silver Cheers... I mean Silver Bullet for an enjoyable time... Unless you are a werewolf! Hoooowwwwllllll!

Review Visit: September 7th, 2014…read more Three visits. Three stars. Like many places on my list, the Fillin' Station is one that I've drove by many times without thinking to stop there. We all do it. Its just a thing we do for places that are local to us. We gloss over them because they are there to visit at any time but we never actually end up going. With my travels, this is something I actively work on countering. The time came for my dad and I to get breakfast one morning and I suggested the Fillin' Station. We both knew about it. We both heard good things about it. We both agreed to check it out. We pulled up and barely were able to park due to it having a strange parking lot layout. I can't describe in unless I was physically there looking at it. So, keep that in mind if you stop in for a visit. We walked in and the first thought I had was... "oh, its like a diner but not". It has a diner feel to it. It some of that 50's diner decor. But it also had it's own decor of... stuff? I couldn't really find a theme among the things hung on the wall. Just older stuff. That's fine. I'm here for food and the random stuff on the wall keeps your eyes wandering. Once seated, we got to looking at the menu. The Station offers your typical diner food at diner prices with some personalized menu items unique to the restaurant. We came for breakfast but it was around brunch and a burger sounded appetizing, so that is what I ordered. My dad stuck with breakfast. It didn't take too long for our food to come out as we were in between the breakfast and lunch rushes. The food was placed in front of us and I was pretty happy with my meal portions. My dad was not. What he ordered and what he got was not quite what was expected. A little less but sometimes the taste and "fullness" can make up for that. We dug in and we both had the look of disappointment on our faces. While the food itself looked presentable and full of flavor, it lacked that last part. Flavor. My burger was a hunk of meat surrounded by toppings. Luckily the toppings themselves were full of their usual goodness. But that meat patty was devoid of all flavor in existence. My dad made the comment that his meal was similar to cardboard or another tasteless object. We didn't stick around long after finishing our meal and left with taste buds that feel like they were woken up for nothing. The waffle fries on the other hand were pretty decent. Not the best I've had but also not the worst. It was passable considering the rest of the meal was less than appetizing. Now, I have been back twice since this first visit. I will talk a bit about those times and how it bumped the score from a 2 to a 3. We came here after a St. Patty's party the following year or something like that. We were all hungover and hating the world. We ordered an assortment of food and downed it quick to help feel better. Whether it was the hangover or the different food items, it wasn't so devoid of flavor this time. While it still left a lot to be desired, it registered some responses by my mouth. Again, after a New Years Eve of fun and drinks, we found ourselves here with some killer hangovers and killer desire for greasy food. Again, we ordered something. I couldn't tell you what. But it was greasy and it may not have helped the hangover in any way but it did help us feel better. This time, the food was a small notch above the prior visit which was a notch above the prior visit. I've heard only good things about this place and have had only less than average food when I come here. Maybe it's just my taste buds that aren't compatible with the food here. Maybe everyone else is ordering something special. Either way, don't take my word on it. Try it out for yourself to see what you and your stomach thinks.

Review Visit: October 28th, 2014…read more If you are a diner aficionado, do not confuse yourself. Yes, there is two diners in Illinois that have nearly the same name. This one is THE 50's Diner located in Peoria, IL and the other is THAT 50's Diner in Dwight, IL. The similarities do not end there. They are both themed from the 1950s. They have a big love of Elvis and other 1950's stuff decorating the diner. That's about where it ends. Matt, Tim, and I rolled up on a sunny autumn afternoon for some nostalgic trip. Not that we were alive in the 50's but it is always fun to visit a place themed after a time period one isn't alive for. I am still waiting for someone to open a Cafe 80's modeled after the one from Back to the Future II. This diner was screaming 50's from the moment we walked in. Black and white color scheme for the seating. 50's decor and memorabilia lining the walls and counters. A menu that screams styling from the time. But none of that matters in the end. It's the food. The menu emhpasizes the Loosey Sammich and that is just what I ordered. While looking over the menu, I did notice they served curly fries, which seems like a rarity outside of Hardee's/Carl Jrs. The diner wasn't busy so our server was timely and our food was delivered after a short while. The food was served in those plastic baskets with wax paper (but sometimes served on plates). To me, I enjoy food being delivered in those things. Why, only foggy childhood memories can explain. The food was dropped in front of us and the Loosey sandwich was... not appealing. I'm not sure what I was expecting but it if you've read enough of these blog posts, you know I save my judgment for how it tastes, not how it looks. Chomp. Chomp. A few bites in and my mouth ran in to dryness without flavor to cover it up. The sandwich was somehow disappointing despite being their signature sandwich. I am going to guess that the meat was sitting in a warmer and dried out. Ah, what a bummer. The fries were good, at least. I've been back a few times with my friend Maria for random breakfasts and lunches and the food from those visits mirrored my first experience here. Bland. Not to say the food is awful or should be avoided, but don't expect anything to make you crave coming back time and time again. But, on the other hand, maybe you'll love the place. Don't let me bland experience deter you from checking it out. Maybe my taste buds are compatible with the 50's. Ah, but this isnt the end of this blog. Nope, one little thing left to talk about. There is a store that takes up the right side of The 50's Diner. Yes, you heard it here. A store. I've browsed the merchandise for sale and I am not sure if this store is a consignment-based or what. The assortment of items is rather eclectic. There's novelty candy, jewelry, random clothes, and other odds and ends. It kind of makes visiting here exciting because you just never know what they will have on sale.
