I am so happy we decided to put this aspect in the hands of the Catering Kalimas, who catered our wedding at He'eia State Park in October 2015. This wife and husband duo, Paula and Mitchell Kalima, is seriously a dream team. They ensured the food at our wedding turned out absolutely perfect! We worked on all of the logistics and costs ahead of time with Paula, who is as easy to work with as she is keen to the nitty gritty details. She helped make our vision a reality, from our wonderful outdoor cocktail hour (down the hill from the reception hall, so guests could enjoy their drinks and snacks in the same spot overlooking the ocean as the ceremony), to the several-stationed main event, to the kick-ass catering and bartending folks who served us. Paula's coordination skills simply rock. Overall, I also believe she gave us fair, reasonable prices for all that we had at our wedding. On the day of our wedding, Chef Mitchell (who has worked as a head chef in Waikiki for years) cooked us a feast that had us and our guests raving. We had a poke bar and other pupus (hors d'oeuvres) during the cocktail hour, traditional Hawaiian food at the main event (the works... Mitchell makes it all), a fresh sushi station (nigiri as well as maki, using top-notch, restaurant-quality fish), and mouth-watering prime rib. Nothing fell short of delicious. My partner and I are still defrosting Mitchell's kalua pork leftover from the reception two months later and loving it. As expected, our reception was a blur for us as the bride and groom and we didn't have all that much time to eat. But what sticks out in my memory was how Paula came up to my partner and I at the beginning of the night, introduced herself and Mitchell (we had not met them until then, since we planned the event from California), personally brought us plates of a little bit of everything (though it was buffet-style for the rest of the guests), and checked in with us throughout the next hour to make sure we were enjoying the food. It was like a personalized, mini-restaurant experience. All around, the Kalimas excel at carrying out their customer-centered catering business. They are worth 6 out of 5 stars! I highly, HIGHLY recommend them if you are looking for outside caterers for your Oahu wedding.

Story time! Needed a last minute sushi platter for Father's Day…read more.. I called the morning of and spoke to Mahi. She said she had to ask the sushi chef if they could fit my order in since it's usually one-day advanced orders.... She called me back within the hour and luckily they could make it! Yay! They had exactly what I wanted - The Assorted Nigiri Platter, but I asked if they could substitute Ebi for Unagi or Hamachi. She said they can sub Ebi for Unagi. Great! When I pre-paid over the phone, I noticed there was a double charge of tax on my credit card plus a credit card fee, so I called back and Mahi was able to correct it, but I still had to pay 3% credit card fee. She said they accept Cash, but since she's only working half-day, no one would be working the register when I arrive so can't do cash payment for my order. Ok, that's fine. My curb-side pick up time was 4:30pm, and Mahi said to call the number on the building and someone will come out with my order. I arrived early at 4:00 and the gate was locked and no one was answering the phone. We drove around and called back at 4:15, still no answer... drove around again... 4:25, noticed a car parked in the lot and the gate was open. I tell them I'm here to pick up my order, but they said they don't work here, they're just the tenants who live upstairs!! ?? Oh really?! Ok....So luckily one of them (nice man) called the owner Kevin, and said there's a customer waiting outside for their order. I knocked on the locked door. Then saw an Asian man dressed in a white kitchen apron walk out from the back, but he motioned to me "Closed". Then I say, I'm picking up a catering order!" The tenant asks, "Where's Vida?!" Then suddenly a lady runs out to open the door. I say, "You didn't answer the phone?!" She opens the refrigerator with my order and asks for my name and asks me which one is my order...? There's 2 other orders in the fridge after mine so they did know people would be there... I tell her it's the 4:30 pick up - she let's me check it... Alright, everything looks good! I sign her copy, get my receipt and bounce! Presentation and taste was great for what I wanted - Father's Day sushi at home. Price was $99 plus and tax & cc fee = $106.77 for 40 pcs nigiri. Would I order again? Not sure... was kinda disorganized, but glad I got my sushi and it worked out... decent 4 star sushi to say the least! Still have other sushi spots to venture to!

A Very Disappointing Experience with Bamboo Catering…read more This review is primarily about our experience with David Webb, the event coordinator for Bamboo Catering, who had been working with my daughter and her husband for approximately a year leading up to their wedding on August 16, 2026. My daughter put an incredible amount of time, effort, and love into planning her wedding. She made wedding favors, sent invitations to approximately 250 guests, and stayed in regular communication with David to make sure everything would go smoothly. With guests traveling from the mainland and internationally, this was an event that had been carefully planned for a very long time. Unfortunately, Hurricane LaLa was passing through the islands on the day of the wedding. The storm had been widely forecast, and we understood that weather conditions could potentially create challenges. However, what we did not expect was the lack of communication from our event coordinator. The day before the wedding, my daughter received a text from David reassuring her that the wedding was still on and that he would see them on Sunday, August 16, to open the facility early so she and her bridesmaids could arrive and get ready. What happened next was incredibly upsetting. The facility lost power, and the outage lasted throughout the day. Despite knowing there was no power, David did not contact my daughter to tell her not to come to the venue. As a result, her entire wedding party was dropped off at the venue early as planned, expecting to be able to enter, get ready, and begin preparations. David did not show up. He did not come to the venue to explain the situation, help them make arrangements, or even personally communicate with the wedding party. My daughter was left at the venue with her wedding party, not knowing what was happening. Even more upsetting, she was not offered a refund until approximately 1:30 p.m., just three hours before the scheduled 4:30 p.m. wedding. By that point, finding an alternative venue for 250 people seemed almost impossible. My daughter was crying and desperately trying to figure out what to do. When she called David, she pleaded where he was, but he quickly became very rude, scolded her about coming early when he told her to come the day before, and the conversation ended with him hanging up on her abruptly. As a mother, it was heartbreaking to watch my daughter experience what should have been one of the happiest days of her life turn into panic and uncertainty. Our entire family immediately rallied together and began calling restaurants and venues, desperately trying to find somewhere that could accommodate approximately 250 guests on extremely short notice. We had family and friends who had traveled from across the mainland and internationally for this wedding, and we were determined not to let the entire celebration be lost. Thankfully, Legends Restaurant at the Chinese Cultural Center heard about our situation and came to our rescue. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about Bamboo Catering. We understand that weather and power outages are sometimes beyond anyone's control. What was not beyond their control was communication and customer service. If there was a possibility that the facility could not be used, my daughter should have been notified immediately and given the opportunity to make a contingency plan instead of calling off the venue middle of the day knowing this morning that this venue couldn't work. When you are responsible for an event involving 250 people and have been working with a couple for an entire year, communication and compassion should be a priority--especially when something completely unexpected happens. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Bamboo Catering. The lack of communication, failure to provide assistance when it was desperately needed, and the way my daughter was treated during an extremely emotional and stressful situation were deeply disappointing. The way this situation was handled by Bamboo Catering and David Webb is something our family will never forget.

Wednesday, had the internet fixed in the morning, picked up my cousin at 10:30 and she gave me directions to Ige's because all this time, I didn't know they were still in business. Oops. Ige's is located in the Waimalu area behind Goodwill on Kam Hwy. There's several small businesses back there and all these driveways, you can miss this place easily. On the main driveway, there's a bike path that crosses it, and an old guard shack. After this, you want to take the second driveway on the left. You know you're going down the right path when you see Guieb restaurant on the left, which I also didn't know was here. And drive all the way to the end. Ige's is the very last store on the left. You'll see the lunch line. They are only open for lunch from Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:30 am - 1 pm, so you should plan ahead. The regular menu differs each day and for now, the daily specials have remained unchanged. But to make sure, check out their IG @igesaiea. When you get there, they do have some grab and goes that are not advertised. As far as pricing, they are pretty reasonable, regular plates are between $13 - $16. However, the portions, let's say it's really heavy. My cousin got a mixed plate of chicken hekka and pork teriyaki. And I got the baked spaghetti, no rice, with toss and Mac salad. And the spaghetti filled half the plate with a good amount of height. Ige's is counter only, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Therefore there are no seats. I asked my cousin if she wanted to grab a table at Neal Blaisdell park down the street and she quickly declined. So we drove back to her house for lunch. My cousin did enjoy her chicken hekka and pork. I'm didn't get to taste it because I was too involved with my meal. At first glance, it wasn't the brick, lasagna-style like school where there was a thick layer of cheese on top. However, without the cheese, it was still tasted the same from what I could remember. Because the portion is heavy, my cousin could only eat a fourth of her lunch while I thought I better tap out at 1/3. So she didn't need to make dinner for her family while I had dinner and lunch for the next day. Although the interaction was short, the counter person was pleasant and very helpful.
