A night to remember! I was overjoyed by ever aspect of my first visit to the theatre. From the people at the door, to those at the concession stand, everyone was so nice. They had adult frozen drinks, such a cool option. And not extremely overpriced. We attended the screening of the cult classic The Lost Boys. The quality was great, as was the sound. We enjoyed the whole experience. We arrived early to get the "good seats". So we got screens showing the history of the theatre and information about the renovations. The place looks great and they put on a bunch of cool events. I highly recommend the Egyptian Theatre. read more

Wow! My first time at The Egyptian Theatre and hopefully not my last. What a beautiful venue! Its decor is unique and it is a small, intimate theatre. I doubt there's a bad seat in here. We were seated on the main floor, Row S. Seats are pretty close together and smaller than newer venues so expect to get close and cozy with your neighbor. I purchased aisle seating so I didn't feel squished in the middle of a row. The sound was nice and not too loud. Amy Grant was the concert I saw and the lighting and stage set was simple and didn't distract from the music. At intermission, the bathroom and concession lines moved pretty fast. Impressive little spot for a concert and there's plenty of free parking nearby, if you arrive Dekalb early enough. My only dislike was the long, dark drive back to the Schaumburg area. read more

Wandering through the Egyptian Theatre while visiting downtown Dekalb is one of my favorite things to do! This review is mostly going to be about the history/look of this historic theater, since I haven't seen any shows in this venue. The Egyptian's art deco look is themed around Ramses II with stained glass, terra cotta, life size pharaohs, cool murals and other small details. Stepping into this theater is like stepping back in time. The seats have been replaced, but due to this being a historical theater, you may find them to be a wee bit on the small end. There's main floor seating and balcony seating. If you can, check out the theater from both levels! As of this review, it is going through some minor renovation projects on the 2nd floor. When completed, this should fix the one thing that never really made sense-- the very small restrooms. Opened Dec. 10, 1929, the Dekalb Theater Group took inspiration from the recent discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 for their combination motion picture house and vaudeville theater. Back in the 1930's, there were hundreds of Egyptian themed theaters, but now Dekalb's is one of the last five remaining. Few and far between, it's the only one east of the Rocky Mountains, making it a bit of a historical gem to those in the midwest! A fun fact about the original creation of the Egyptian is that one of my favorite parts of it, the colorful broken tile lobby floor, was supposed to be marble, but plans were changed with the stock market crash of 1929 a few months prior to the opening of this venue. It's fascinating for me to think that people have been walking these tiles since 1929! The venue continued showing movies to audiences until 1977, after the building began deeply showing its age. After dedicated citizens vowed to save the theater, they successfully got the Egyptian on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Eventually, a grant was given to the Preservation of the Egyptian Theatre, Inc. to give the theater a full renovation in 1980 and later again in the late 2000's. Here's another fun fact: The has the largest movie screen (35 feet wide and 22 feet tall) in DeKalb County. If you're in DeKalb, make sure to check out the this historic theater! This is a movie palace that opened right after the stock market crash. It's gorgeous and seats 1400. They replaced all the seats a couple of years ago, so modern wide American butts need have no fear, though the place still doesn't have air conditioning in the summer, so their season's only 9 months. The theater is run by a nonprofit; they do a mixture of live events and second run films, including the Rocky Horror Picture Show (monthly, at 8pm, so if you like to get to bed early, check it out). This is one of 6 remaining Egyptian-themed theaters in the country and the only one east of the Rockies. They do a haunted house every year ("Amenti") and you can arrange tours if that's of interest for about $7 a head. read more

I just can't get over how delicious the popcorn was. Like it was the perfect popcorn I always picture having or wish I was having. I went last Thursday and I'll be back again this Thursday and hope the popcorn is still just as good! I enjoyed the showing too. read more

I came here with my parents for a showing of the Nutcracker, the last winter of my stay at NIU. It was the first time I saw the Nutcracker and that I was visiting the Egyptian. Since my mom is a huge Egyptiologyphile and I was trying to get to see the inside of the theater, I was darned if I was going to graduate without visiting at least once. This was our chance. The interior is so very totally cool, and thank God someone rehabbed this theatre, to it's natural gradeur and joyful colors. It should be part of the national heritage, if its not already! read more

Saw a live concert here last night (Gaelic Storm). If I ever run into the lighting guy from the show, I'm going to slap him up the the side of his head... What's the deal with pointing the pin spots at the audience all night? And strobes during an Irish Trad-Rock show? WTF? But I digress... Nice theater, good size, in pretty good shape. Seats are comfy, if a little close to the ones in front of you. Sound could be a little less muddy, but it may be fine for plays and movies... TIP: The girl in front of us said there's no air conditioning in the place, so confirm that before you buy your tickets for a mid-summer Deadhead tribute band or something... read more

Where do I begin? Well, let's see: There are only 4 toilets for women and 4 for men.....for a place that seats 1400 people....expect lines if you need to pee. stairs are not built to today's code, at least i think - they were fairly narrow and i saw at least three people eat it while trying to navigate the stairs to the balcony there is no air conditioning...so even though they don't do shows in the summer, when it's a sold out crowd, it gets pretty hot. i didn't see a sprinkler system, it's an old building. if there is a fire during a show it would go up like a roman candle and you are trapped, although there are means of egress, stairs are tricky and door ways narrow. the seats were designed for people in 1928. best i can say is, that imagine if you were in coach on a plane and in the middle seat and the two people next to you are obese...that's the way it is, regardless of how big the adults are sitting next to you. no matter how much i like the act, i'd really rethink seeing them here on the upside, it is a historical building, i highly recommend checking out wikipedia for more info on it - very interesting stuff.. read more

A great icon in the DeKalb area. I've seen concerts here and also done a ghost walk. There is great architecture here and the people who work here and always very nice. The actual ghost hunt was a lot of fun and was informational, they even let you use their "gear" to look for things. I've also been to the haunted house here which scared the crud out of me. Literally... I'm over 25 and I was running by the end. I don't know how they do it but they make it very good and super long. read more

Went to the "Second City" show on 2018 Feb 24. Security coming into the theater was normal. However the security team set up a choke point and the exit after the show was a crowded jam up. Only one door to get out. I saw the security personnel stop a woman for carrying a bottle of water. Very irritating and unnecessary. read more

This place is AMAZING! Last night was my first visit and I saw the Gaelic Storm concert. The seats were a big snug and the aisles a bit cozy with another, but I didn't let that stop me from enjoying the show. Every staff member I encountered was friendly and helpful. The bathroom was clean (although a bit tight in the stall). This theater has that hometown feel which so many theaters don't anymore. It's wonderful to come here and have some fun! read more

I attended the show to see Mike Super. He is a wonderful magician and it was quite the show. He interacted with the audience a lot and it was a ton of fun for everyone. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The theatre is beautiful and quite unique. I am in DeKalb quite often so I will be looking out for other shows here! read more

The production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Egyptian Theater was wonderful! All the cast did a great job but I just have to send a shout out to the person who played Frankenfurter. He was spot on the entire time. He really captured Frankenfurter to the T, right down to every quivering lip movement! He really has a passion for the show! read more

Beautiful, gorgeous old theatre with a fascinating history. It was almost in complete ruin when a group of community activitsts started preserving it in the 1970s. Now you can watch concerts, touring dance companies, and community theatre productions performed under its starry sky. read more

I attended a "Here Come The Mummies" concert at the beautiful Egyptian Theater. The concert was really good, and the staff was very professional and friendly. I'm a big fan of the Egyptian Theater, and had been on a tour of this beautiful historic place several years ago with my kids! I enjoyed being at the theater, and would've given this review 5 stars except for being disappointed at the lack of the theaters security enforcing their "no standing" policy during shows, especially not in the aisles. We purchased really good seats and expected to be able to see the stage perfectly! Now I realize that this band typically performs with a standing audience, so their fans are used to that. However, since this was the first time I was attending a live concert by them, I purposely chose a venue that had reserved, assigned ticketing. If I wanted to stand to see them I would've chosen the Joliet venue they recently were at. We arrived on time and found our seats to see the opening act. All was fine until that group finished and the stage was being prepped for the "Mummies" show. We noticed there was a highly intoxicated young lady standing two rows in front of us, dancing wildly and getting a good deal of attention. Someone in our party went out to the lobby to try and get a beverage, but the line was way too long, so they happened to ask an usher if it was the theaters policy to allow standing in the aisles and chairs. We were told that no one was allowed to stand, these were assigned seats. So, imagine my surprise when the "Mummies" entered into the theater down the center aisle to begin, everyone in the 4 rows in front of us stood up, as did the rows behind us, and most remained standing the entire show! I stood up just to be able to see for about 10 minutes before I sat down again since my back was hurting! There were two people to my left who sat the entire show, and a lady at the opposite end of our aisle who also never got up off her seat. There were two security staff at both entrances on either side of the stage who didn't do a thing to enforce this policy. I honestly think that it's very unfair for people who paid top dollar to be forced to stand, or just not see, because people are too ignorant to be polite and have it all about themselves! The aisles were full of people who paid 25.00 who came from their seats behind us and stood up front only to block the view of folks up front who expected to be able to watch the show seated!! I'm not trying to be a "kill-joy", but this is not only rude, its unsafe! The theater should've had someone make an announcement before the "Mummies" began that everyone had to be seated, or go in the back or up in the balcony. When the staff saw that not too many people were following protocol they should've gotten word to the "Mummies" to announce it themselves. This group performs at plenty of venues that allow standing, but I don't feel that I should suffer because I chose one that had seats! This really took a lot away from my being able to enjoy the show to the fullest! I was forced to stand periodically just to see what was happening. Some of those who never stood up didn't see much. Perhaps those people were not able to stand the whole time either. Get signs that indicate no standing during shows! I hope the theater does not support rude patrons!! read more

Egyptian theatre was beautiful! I give the 1 stars because I saw "their version" of rocky horror tonight and even the actors admitted to have never seen the movie before. You could tell they didn't know the words or dances since the movie came out while they were all sperm..... Don't do movies you don't know. read more
