This place sucks. I went for an early dinner last night and wanted to sit outside as the weather was nice. The patio wasn't crowded, but it took about 30 mins to get my first drink. Then, it took about 1 hour to order my meal and second drink. I was shocked at the poor service as this place came highly recommended. Then, it started to rain and hail, and they handed out umbrellas as it poured. No invite to come into the restaurant, and no sense of urgency to bring umbrellas. Everything was soaked, including the bill. The meal was good, but not good enough to warrant the wait. I was very disappointed. read more

I am a big fan of the restaurant/bar that accompanies a high-end, fancy-schmancy restaurant. 8 Bar is to Maple & Ash what The Loyalist is to Smyth. Different, casual, not cheap but not special-occasion-only, and just as amazing as it's sibling. We made a reservation well in advance and even then we had to eat dinner at 5. I was fine with that. It's like a late lunch! So it was summer, it's Saturday and we're sitting in a booth enjoying a well made negroni. Delightful! To start we had the burrata baguette which is like the most summery, creamy, delightful deconstructed caprese salad. Just lovely. My boyfriend had to try the hamburger and it now has a spot on his top 5 best burgers in the city (next to Au Cheval and The Loyalist) I had the king crab and avocado salad. It was fresh, filling, decadent, creamy, and bright. The bartender was great. You could tell he really cared if we liked the drinks he made for us. We would happily come here anytime! read more

This was my first time visiting this place! No reservations for Maple & Ash so we opted to eat here. The servers weren't much help when asking about cocktails. I ordered the Calamari.. It was very salty! I Also had the salmon and the salad was salty and salmon had no favor at all! I don't want to return here for any reason! I'd give the ambience & atmosphere a 2, and food a 5! We booked our reservation for the patio at 8pm in a Friday & we're seated right away. Our waitress was great & got us drinks right away. Every once in a while we would get a waft of the sewer, & from there things went downhill. We were seated next to a group of "entitled guests" who were not observing social distancing at all & no masks, and they kept inviting/bringing more people over to their table, where eventually they took over ours. It seemed like they "knew ppl" and the restaurant didn't care that they were carrying on like this. We asked to be moved, & we're right away. We were told "things would be taken care of" & "sorry you had an ass in your face the whole time", but from there our waitress came back to our table 1 time after we got our food. We had no water during our meal, & had to request another glass of wine. We also were not "taken care of" when our bill came like a manager mentioned. Apart from the experience - The food was delicious! Highly recommend the bone in rib eye, king crab truffle roll, pasta, and Mac n cheese - all AMAZINGGGG! I'd more so recommend the actual dining area on a busy weekend so you don't have to deal with what we did. Didn't even get as far as the table. The group before us left as well. The hostess station was on, but nobody was there. After five minutes we just walked in, only to be ignored by two bartenders. After another five minutes I asked the bartender if the kitchen was still opened I just got a one page menu handed to me. I got afraid that for the next step I would have to possibly hand carry the order to the kitchen, so we left. Five minutes after the review the owner got in touch with me. They do care. Came here with my sister today to have a nice lunch outside on the patio. Ordered multiple drinks and even an appetizer. The appetizer itself took 50 minutes to arrive to our table (after watching multiple tables get full on MEALS even though they were seated after us). The appetizer was tuna tartare...... not something that needs to be cooked. We were the second table seated in their entire patio. We were planning on getting full lunches and sides which would've made this restaurant a lot of money to which we were ignored and not taken care of by our waitress Michelle. Really disappointing as we were first time customers and excited to try this place. After 50 minutes and finally getting a raw appetizer, we left without even ordering lunch. The waitress was unapologetic and did nothing to help us out. Probably won't come back unless they can provide something for us. Seriously so disappointing. read more

Patio was busy but inviting. THE BLOODY MARY WAS INSANE. Expensive, but well worth it. It had a heavy pour of vodka, a thick, dripping-with-fat piece of bacon, a cheese curd, a gherkin, an olive... it was ridiculously good. I really enjoyed my experience here - many thanks to our wonderful server David who took excellent care of us. We had a table of four and grabbed dinner there so we could watch the Cubs game at the same time. Good food. But what really stood out to me was the way in which David made sure we always had what we needed. For example, I had asked for hot water with lemon when we first arrived and didn't end up getting anything else to drink. For the rest of the night, David made sure that I always had my cup filled with hot water and a fresh piece of lemon. I have literally never experienced a server caring so much about making sure my hot drink was refilled throughout the entire evening (and we were there for a very long time given how long the game ended up being). We were so excited to try the snow cones after our bike ride and were promptly seated by a very pleasant hostess to a charming outside patio. We were given water and menus and were looking forward to the meatball sliders and cheese curds. And then we waited and waited and waited. Went here on a weeknight with my fiancee in hopes of having a light dinner. Highly recommend the beautiful little outdoor patio (first come, first serve!). We shared the burrata to start and it was very tasty! Fantastic combination of baguette, fresh tomatoes, and burrata. For dinner I got the kale caesar salad and my fiancee got the roasted beets and shaved greens salad. Both of our salads were outstanding! Super fresh ingredients and a great, light meal. Bizarre experience. Waiter came out and awkwardly presented wine bottle to someone who didn't order the wine. I quickly realized the reason was because the year on the bottle was wrong and said something to him. He arrogantly just shrugged it off. Eight Bar was recommended by a family friend. Atmosphere and menu was exactly what we were looking for last Friday night. We went for a later dinner, around 8 and got seated around 9, no big deal. Our waiter was very friendly. We ordered two orders of the buratta and waited around 30-45 minutes until we were told they got backed up in the kitchen and ran out of one of the last two burattas but we could order another appetizer free of cost. Great customer service. Our dinner wasn't served until around 10:30. To give them the benefit of the doubt, they were very busy and also had an ambulance visit for one of the other customers. Since our food took over an hour to be served, the manager compensated our WHOLE BILL. Despite the long wait for dinner, the service was amazing and the food was outstanding. It's all about the customer service. And this place knows how to make it right when they know they messed up. Highly recommend. read more

In general, I will definitely NOT recommend this place. The hostess at the front door is always absent and not nice. Today they missed us when we walked in with reservation since she was NOT there. We got a message, so we stopped by to tell her that we have already finished eating. She lied to us that she has marked us dined there, when reported us not eating. The service at the bar is really not good each time and the food is so so too. Maple and Ash on the other hand is much better. There are so many great food places around and I will not come back here anymore even though we have been here a few times. Terrible! read more

I had been to Maple and Ash a number of times and generally had great experiences. I love the atmosphere but the last two visits really changes my perspective. Last Friday I went in for drinks after getting off work down the street. Really great cocktails here but the service was extremely slow. We had not had water glasses filled more than once during our stay and when we asked for the check it took so long I ended up walking my card to the the server before seeing the bill. Normally I don't mind waiting if it's busy but the patio and downstairs were not full and service was generally inattentive that evening. I also stopped with a friend Tuesday night as well and the service was much quicker. However, there was a giant chip in my water glass when I sat down to take a drink. I ordered 2 negronis that evening and the second one came out with a chip in the glass as well. I understand glasses break but then the bill came out and I was charged $17 for the negroni that was $13 dollars on the menu. Simple error and not a big deal until I had received a snarky comment from the bartender and no apology for the two broken glasses I was served. This was enough to make me think about going to or recommending this restaurant to colleagues or friends. read more
