I highly recommend Ekata for adults, kids, and families. They offer a holistic approach to martial arts, mindfulness, fitness, and afterschool programs. Their camps are next to none, their staff is best in class, and they always show how much they care... So if you find yourself (or your kids) sitting on a sofa and watching Netflix too much, come on over register for a class and get moving.

This place is amazing! I'm not in the best shape but they have a number of classes for beginners and never felt judged. Highly recommend.

They have world class technical experience, but perhaps more importantly, they have a deep understanding of how to relay their experience and passion to their students. My 8-year-old son has been attending Checkmat for about 8 months and he loves it. I noticed his self-confidence grow since he started with Checkmat. He tells me his favorite days are the days he goes to jiu jitsu. He's tried multiple sports and has never shown as much enthusiasm as he has for jiu jitsu and a huge part of that is Checkmat's approach to introducing children to jiu jitsu. This is a super kid friendly place. I have so much confidence in this program that I encouraged my 5-old son to try it. Professor Art and Professor Leka welcomed him to trial experience and he had so much fun he joined and is now a member of the Checkmat family. I highly recommend this program. The children grow in their self-confidence, their self-awareness, inner (and outer) strength, discipline, and most importantly, they have fun!

He joined last year, and since then he's also started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu--and the growth we've seen in him has been incredible. He's much more confident now than when he first started, and seeing him walk into class proud, motivated, and excited is something I'll never take for granted. Because of how positive and welcoming the environment is, my partner and I decided to join the dojo as well. From day one, we felt supported and encouraged. Master Prager is genuinely kind, patient, and amazing with kids. He leads with care and respect, and it truly shows in the students. The other instructors and coaches are just as amazing--always friendly, helpful, and encouraging us every step of the way. One of the most meaningful parts of our experience has been the sense of community. I've made real friendships with other parents as well as with the people in my adult class. We truly share a love for martial arts and a desire to help each other improve, grow, and succeed. That kind of support and connection is rare and incredibly special. The Edge Martial Arts is more than just a dojo--it's a community that builds confidence, discipline, and genuine relationships. We feel lucky to be part of it and wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a positive, uplifting place for themselves or their family. There is also usually a couple student helpers to assist that are great with the kids too. As far as martial arts skills they don't teach technical moves at his age. Which is fine by me. His class usually consists of an obstical course and a variety of trampolines where they practice bouncing in different ways and flipping. He learns patience while waiting for the other children to take their turn, listening to instruction, and new tricks each week as he progresses. Not to mention it helps get out some of the energy that my 3 year old harbors....they have sooo much!!! I took him to another karate class in canyon country prior and it wasn't at all geared for a 3 year old although it said so. He was new to following instruction and they didnt have the teachers to give the attention that a 3 yr old needs. Everyone else in the class was atleast over 6. We ended up leaving mid class because he felt like such a disruption and it was not a good fit. I don't have that problem at all here. Sometimes littler kids gets off track and need a little extra attention and training. While speaking to a few parents of the older children at Shins they stated that the gym is the only place they will leave their child unattended and run errands while their child is in class. Which is great to hear! You always want to know your kids are in safe hands. They seem like they genuinely care about my child which makes me feel very comfortable although he is far too young to leave unattended yet. So glad we found this place. We drive from canyon country which is about a 20 minute ride for us....but totally worth it to see how happy he is when he's there.
