We just moved here from Austin where you can't throw a rock without hitting an interesting Mexican food restaurant. El Agave would be in the front rank if they were in that city. Terrific variety. I tried lengua tacos for the first time. Outstanding. Their barbacoa, beef fajitas, carne guisada, and breakfast tacos are large and delicious. There is a surprising large indoor dining space, so it's nice for sitting down to a meal. I'm looking forward to exploring the rest of the menu. If you're on the road passing through Johnson City or visiting here, give this place a shot. I feel kind of like driving over there for something new right now. So, my husband and I previously went there on a Tuesday evening because I heard the food was pretty good, however, when we arrived we were not only treated rudely, but we also received something totally different than what we had originally ordered. It wasn't even that busy so It wasn't a great experience to begin with, especially since our server was flat out rude and unwelcoming the entire time. Pretty gross finding mold and hair in my rice after finishing most of it. When I told a server she didn't care at all, she said "oh" and then started rolling silverware. Then I had to tell a man, he got a manager. She literally said "we were working on the ceiling" that was something she absolutely could have left out because it just makes whatever it was in my rice worse. The servers were very patient with this group, as they had complained about everything. Not only were they loud but very rude. One girl in particular. Say QUESO!! Upon entering, we were greeted by friendly staff. They're short staffed like everyone else, but you'd never know it by their attentiveness. We sat in one of their beautiful booths, which are quite comfortable. We had queso to start, which had good flavor. They have their standard table salsa, which has a smoky flavor. But the 3 extra salsas they brought out, were LEGIT. They had a spicy tomatillo, a red salsa that had a BIG kick, and a salsa verde that had such good flavor! I put the salsa verde on everything! I had the beef Fajitas Jalisco, which is beef fajitas smothered in a queso sauce over a bed of rice. I ate every piece of beef and then some. The flour tortillas are homemade, and so good! My kids had the kids order bean and cheese nachos and the kids cheese enchiladas. They ate it all! And that's hard to do with my picky kids. My husband got the cheese enchiladas and ate it all. We were just driving through but we will make a point to come back! My kids and husband finished off with the Paletas, Oreo and Mango Chamoy. I HIGHLY suggest this place! read more

I have tried over and over to give this place a chance because of convenience however, I will not be going back ever again. I have had so many issues with these people and yet, I try and try again. I managed a busy restaurant in downtown Austin for over 20 years. I never gave anyone customer service the way this guy has treated me. I have overlooked multiple incorrect orders. I have place very simple orders through the drive thru, like 3 bacon egg tacos and 3 barbacoa, only to get home and have 3 bacon egg, 2 bacon egg cheese & 1 barbacoa. I didn't call and complain, I just accepted what I was given. I have asked to place two separate orders and the man argued with me because I didn't say I wanted to pay with two different cards. He asked if I wanted to place a separate order and I said yes. When I pulled up to the window and told him that the total seemed high for one order, he said "That's what I asked you!" Today I wanted a chalupa plate with the shredded chicken on the side, I was told they couldn't do that, so I just left. I didn't want to travel with wet chicken making my chalupas any soggier. It's always the same guy with an attitude, so maybe it's just me he doesn't like. I have never been confrontational with him. We just had a terrible experience at this restaurant. First we did not get even menus for a long time. We had 5 people and were offers 4 menus and sets of cutlery. We needed to ask for extra set. We were not offered chips and salsa( unlike other customers). We got it only after we asked ( with our food). Food itself was on, but not great. After we ordered 3 desserts. One of the desserts had a quarter size mold spot! Seriously waitresses brought it to us! After that we returned all the desserts and hoping not to get sick after the food we ate! Sometimes the meat can be dried out by the end of the day but this place was really great I wish I had more time I totally would of tried something else on the menu for they had a lot of different things. We almost turned down this place based on the low average, but are glad we gave it a shot! We arrived about 4pm after an afternoon of hiking at Perdernales Falls. The restaurant was almost empty, but we were soon joined by about 4-5 other tables. We sat ourselves and were greeted by our server promptly. Chips and salsa were brought while we looked at the menu. Chips were tasty and crispy and the salsa was fresh with a good bit of heat, which was perfect for my husband and me. It did seem to have a slight Italian flavor or something else that was a bit unique. My kid gave the bean and cheese nachos 5 stars. My husband was glad to see shrimp cocktail on the menu. The large size had 12 shrimp and was also fresh and tasty. I had the shrimp quesadillas on corn tortillas. The tortillas were soft, quesadillas were tasty, rice was cooked well, salad was fresh. Pico wasn't spicy at all, even with the jalapeños, and the refried beans had a flavor I didn't care for, but that's simply personal preference. All in all, we all were glad we stopped by and enjoyed our meals very much. We'd gladly stop by again. OTHER DETAILS: Our first stop was to wash hands after being outside all day, and the bathrooms were extremely clean and well maintained. The entire restaurant was nice looking and immaculate. The atmosphere is tastefully traditional with colorful booths and upbeat Spanish music on the speakers. Several tables with booth seating are around the perimeter of the restaurant's main area (there were other rooms we didn't go into), with a good amount of table and chair seating in the center. Placed an order at El Agave and the order was not only wrong, but the meat was entirely undercooked. I called about 10 min after picking up my order to see if I could just come in to swap it for the right one, but instead I was put on hold for literally 41 min and completely ignored the whole time. After 41 minutes, they hung up and of course I called back just to be hung up on. Management really needs to hire better individuals. That Shit sucked 100%. Giving them 1 star is like giving away 1500 points on your SAT for just writing your name correctly, but I'm sure they couldn't even do that right. read more

We came here tonight to eat while we were out in Johnson city looking at the lights with family, we ordered our food our waitress couldn't really understand what we were trying to order, we ordered a child's taco plate (soft taco), #1 enchiladas, two beef and cheese soft tacos by themself and the Texas plate or something like that. Our server came back with our food and started handing us our plates when I realized My daughters child plate was not a child's plate and had two tacos on it, I said to her "this was supposed to be a child's plate" she told me it was fine just to keep it since it was the same thing just an extra taco, I told her that's fine. They handed us the rest of our food only other thing that was wrong was they brought us extra tacos we did not order and they took those back. (Looking very annoyed) again we didn't order that & we didn't need it. Not our fault the waitress didn't understand what we were ordering.. after we ate we had went up to pay they told me to wait a second and went and got a manager, he walks up to us and the first thing he says "did you eat the plate" at first I couldn't understand what he was asking, then I realized oh he's asking if we ate I said well yes we did? Then he goes see you ate all the food in the plate were charging you for an adult plate, let me remind you this was supposed to be a child's plate. I was honestly shocked because it's not about the money I didn't mind having to pay for the plate but the way he immediately approached me asking if we ate off the plate and then tried to accuse my daughter 10 years old of eating everything on that plate when she indeed did not was insane. She looked scared by the way, I had to ask my 8 and 10 year old to stand by the door after that happened, then he proceeded to argue with me about the eaten food? I then said well they told us to just keep it? Still not sure why he is so upset about this. Smiling at me while he says "you ate all the food" does that even matter??? It wasn't even our mess up. Honestly I probably wouldn't of even known we were charged for an adult plate or even cared but how dare you say something like this? Very ugly behavior. I then told him do not speak to me like that, it's very disrespectful and embarssing because I'm not the one wrong here? If the food was eaten or not who cares??!! Don't tell us to keep the food then throw a fit when we go to pay. We went back and fourth for a min and then I told him he definitely needs to learn how to run his restaurant because that ain't it. The food was "ok" nothing special. But after this I definitely will never return. He continues to argue with me even after paying! As I'm still telling him, I have My children here and this is embarrassing and ridiculous, do better and be better! The manager of this place is a JOKE. If you're that money hungry you should have just taken the damn plate back and re made another one!! Oh and I forgot the server tried to say my daughter ate the plate clean! The chips are thick and tough. I prefer a thinner more tender chip. The salsa has no flavor. I got the #5 mixed fajitas with cheese dip over them. The beef fajitas are DISGUSTING. They are tough, fatty and have an old taste to them. I couldn't eat them after the first bit. The chicken fajitas are ok once you cut the fat and gristle off of them.
