The meat was dry like sawdust, and severely under seasoned with the traditional taco taste nowhere to be found. Also, it was 30 dollars. As a Mexican American I try all local Mexican restaurants in the area. El Agave was a disappointment. The chips were stale. The salsa was more like a pizza sauce instead of a salsa. The food was bland and my burrito had little meat. My wife's arroz con pollo was runny. But the tea was okay. The service was okay and the ambiance was good. Summary: An inviting atmosphere, a large and varied menu with fair prices, and satisfying though not exceptional food. El Agave is larger on the inside than it looks from the street and has an outside patio dining area. Complementary chips and salsa arrived quickly. Neither tasted particularly fresh but were satisfactory. Every table had a QR scan to bring up the menu on your phone. It opened a nine page selection of apps, fajitas, burritos, steaks, combinations, lunch specials and more. All I wanted was a better-than-Taco Bell taco--not really a high bar. With a choice of beef or chicken I split the three tacos between a beef and two chicken. I wasn't given an option for soft or crispy shells and all arrived with crispy. The ground beef didn't pass the Taco Bell test. It lacked seasoning and tasted simply like cooked ground beef. The moist chicken taco used breast meat and was far superior. Fortunately, I needed no additional service after my meal was dropped off because the server never checked on me. Would I return? Maybe. More likely, I'd give another local Mexican spot a try. read more

Came in for lunch on Sunday at 12:30. Seated right away and immediately brought chips, salsa and water. Offered specials on drinks - which we took them up on. Our food was brought out quickly and everything was VERY TASTY. Overall, I had a very good experience. I woukd like a little better explanation of the food specials than I recieved...more than just 'it's got beef in it', but our server was friendly and attentive. Parking was ample. Horrible service!!! Tried to make a takeout order and the gentleman answering the phone was incredibly unprofessional and just kept hanging up the phone. We had a party of 15 people looking to order sad to see them miss out on a $200+ tab just because their employees wanted to be immature. First time coming here and I can say that I will definitely be back again. Went with my two friends Tuesday evening right before the dinner rush. We had a great server, probably one of the best servers I've ever had at a Mexican Restaurant. Tex-Mex restaurants are one of my favorite to go to, I have this particular entree that I like to order called Quesadilla Mexicana that I happen to find at almost any Tex-Mex restaurant. This time I decided to order a "Quesadilla Special" which instead of chicken or beef, it's a cheese quesadilla with chorizo, Mexican sausage. It was flavorful, and the sides of lettuce tomato and guacamole were all fresh. We received our food at a decent time. We also ordered their special small pitcher of lime margaritas. Can't believe I haven't left a review for this el Agave a "little slice of heaven!" I am from Texas so I LOOOVE Tex Mex. In my opinion it's rare to find good Mexican food down in the deep south but to find a Tex Mex restaurant is even more rare. I stumbled across this restaurant looking for a different Mexican restaurant. When I saw this said Tex Mex I let my husband know we needed to go ASAP. The food looked good and like Tex Mex. The salsa is to DIE for!!! Reminds me of my favorite Tex Mex restaurant in Austin called El Borrego de Oro. I mean this is exactly what I have been looking for. I am by no means a good judge of Mexican food quality, but this is the best Mexican food I've had in my life. Okay, I've probably only had Mexican five other places, and most of those were El Maguey restaurants. My family dislikes Mexican food, so I never had anything even nominally Mexican beyond cinnamon twists from Taco Bell until college. Typically, I only eat Mexican when someone else wants it. Last Memorial Day I spent the day out going to cemeteries and shopping. I was famished by afternoon, but every restaurant from O'Fallon to Wentzville at which I felt like eating was closed. Driving along Wentzville Parkway, I was delighted to see El Agave, a restaurant of which I had no prior knowledge, was open. I ordered the same dish today as on my first visit: 3 cheese enchiladas. It was as slow today, or slower, than it was on Memorial Day. There were 5 or 6 employees standing around with no customers in sight at 11:20. The food arrived VERY quickly - not even 10 minutes after we ordered. The cheese enchilada is going to be my usual at El Agave. The cheese is so soft and gooey and the enchilada sauce is delicious. I was pleased to take the final 1/3 of it home for dinner. My companion ordered tamales and has enough for probably two more meals. By the way, the companion was one of my Mexican-disliking parents, who now likes Mexican food if it's from El Agave. For dessert, we split a fried ice cream, which was a first for her. While not a huge fan of ice cream in general, she thought it was quite tasty, and remarked that it looked like a birthday sundae with all of its colorful sprinkles. The restrooms are clean and smell clean. I love that in a restaurant. Finally: while we were eating, a man walked over to the bar with a cigarette. The bartender politely told him that starting August 1 (today), there would be no smoking in the restaurant. The man went outside and put his cigarette out without fuss. Based on other reviews we dropped in for lunch in anticipation of some authentic Mexican. As much as I was hoping for a five star, authentic meal I can't say we were impressed. Food wasn't bad but there was nothing that made us feel it was any better than the other average Mexican restaurants in the area. The food that we actually got was actually good but how they handled a simple mistake was inexcusable. 6 people ordered food and drinks. 40 minutes later, 5 plates came out. No big deal. We waited 20 minutes and no additional service came to the table. We eventually got the attention of the waiter and he said that they noticed that forgot the order and that's I'd be out in a few minutes. 20 minutes later - no 6th meal. We asked to speak to a manager, he came to the table and before explaining he said he'd take care it... came out 30 seconds later with the food but with no apology and mentioned that they forgot about it twice. He also refused to comp the meal that they screwed up on while also refusing to talk to anyone at our table about it except the young lady who ordered the food... finally after requesting our check he brought back the cold meal and comped it. Been here a handful of times over the years. Recently went back the other night for dinner with the family. I must say, not super impressed. I thought the food was okay. Really it was like any other Mexican food that I could get in St. Charles County. There was nothing super special about the meal. The thing that was different were the names of the dishes and the combinations of the food. But the flavors were all the same. I got some chicken dish with the salsa verde on it and it was a little too hot for my taste. The flavor was alright, but nothing major. The did have a good deal on their margarita that night. So I got one, and it tasted good. I did request sugar used instead of salt and still got salt. But again, tasted like a lot of the other margs in the county. Finally, the atmosphere was meh. It looked like a restaurant that didn't know if what it wanted to be. You wouldn't be able to tell the difference from other places except for the fact that it has a few Mexican decorations and ads hanging up. Honestly, I don't plan to be back. First, the service was excellent. We were greeted with friendly smiles and enthusiasm. The chips were warm and fresh. The salsa had good flavor. My sister got fajitas, sizzling, savory, and plentiful. Enough for leftovers. My brother got enchiladas, cooked perfectly. They had wonderful cheese drizzle over them. I got a grilled chicken salad and added sautéed mushrooms. It was great. It is my go to dish for Mexican, but this was fresh and the chicken was good. The server have short answers to only 2 questions and offered 0 suggestions. Never smiled, gave his name, never returned to the table, never asked if we needed anything, didn't tell us to pay up front, nothing.NOTHING. I don't usually mind or need to be treated like royalty but it was embarrassing. They weren't even busy. Thank goodness the food came out fast. We quit going to El Maguey in Lake Saint Louis (near the dam) because of how they treated us when I brought my new SD for the first time. The folks at El Agave were very warm and welcoming. Nice and clean-it's new. The sauce was a bit bland but has a nice amount of cilantro in it so it tastes very good-they have bottles of habanero sauce on the table so I added a little to their sauce to give it a little more kick. They will bring out a bowl of their spicier hot sauce if you ask for it but i thought it tasted like spicy ketchup-it wasn't as flavorful as their regular sauce. My wife and I ordered the mixed fajitas and we both thought they were delicious! Ample portion sizes and comes with all the usual-tortillas, rice,and beans. Plus, they do give you guacamole too-which seems to be less normal these days (Chihuahua's!). Service was very good too. If you know "real" Mexican food, steer clear of this restaurant. The food was not authentic, the Mexicans and the Americans at the table were unimpressed.
