My favorite is chimichangas, and I order them with black beans instead of meat. The fajita quesadillas are a favorite of my crew, along with the Barbacoa that they only offer on weekends. Ask for the extra red and green sauce if you want more heat! The traditional margaritas are my absolute favorite. Often there is a margarita special- just check the board when you come in. Yesterday a regular line margarita was $2.99. And yes, you CAN taste the alcohol. So good! The only reason I don't give 5 stars is the service and staff are hit or miss. The building looks simple enough but don't let that stop you. As I entered, the smells, the employees and the decor it brought back memories of Hispanic restaurants I ate at in my younger years. My mouth still waters when I reflect on those places. They have excellent wait staff who immediately takes care of you. When I looked at the menu I saw they weren't a Gringo/American type of food. If you want that go to Taco Bell. As for the customers the majority were Anglos. I am one myself. I thought how vocal some are wanting to drive Hispanics out of the country. Then rave about their food. They come and eat there If the Hispanic's are gone. Where will you eat. Time for the food. I have been searching for years to find authentic Mexican cuisine. The first bite I took transported me back to days of long ago. It was exactly what I remembered. There are many types of Mexican food in Elkin. Combination restaurant and grocery. I've eaten here several times and have found the food to be consistently good. Wait staff forget to bring add-on sides (on different visits they've forgotten to bring a side of cilantro, side of chiles torreados, and side of avocado) but the st very friendly. I like their Jamaica and Tamarindo drinks, and their rice quite well. This is a treat I certainly did not expect. From the signage I thought this was a grocery that specializes in Hispanic food items. However, they have a quaint little restaurant also which has very great service. The server was polite and friendly extended great service. The food is even better than the service. I have visited several Hispanic cafes locally but this one is one of the best. Nice setting, clean and is bigger than it looks. The only minus I can see is the steps leading into the place are very steep and difficult to transverse for someone that is handicapped. Otherwise all around great place to visit. read more

Another restaurant we have been going to. Today we ordered the shrimp tacos with beans, rice and salad - a regular dish. We received small shrimp - looked like bay shrimp - that was breaded and cut up into smaller pieces. It was hard and mostly lettuce in the taco. I told the waiter this is not how it normally is - there are large shrimp in the tacos. He told me no this is the way it has always been. Oh- and one side salad for the two of us. We paid for the drinks and left. The restaurant has gone down hill. I noticed they changed there name to the Mango Peel - a Fine Dining Restaurant. They should've left the old name and the good food. Came from hawaii and meet our friend here and loved it. The food was amazing. The fajitas de texasana was perfection portion of all the meats and veggies. Chip and salsa was great too. To make the tortillas de maze from scratch the best I've had in this state so far. Drinks were great as well. read more

The restaurant serves traditional Mexican tacos, sopes and gorditas, but they also serve "gringo" items such as ACP, chimichangas and taco salads. I ordered 3 sopes ($6.49) with al pastor (marinated pork), and they were great. The inside of the restaurant is very nice also. read more

The quality of their food is what stands out to me. I love the Chile poblano as it's in my top five best I've ever had. I pair this with one shrimp taco - also in my top five! This makes a great combo meal for a total of a whopping $10. I'll gladly pay more for better quality but at El Ahorro you don't have to. They serve bottled beer with a good selection, I'm a Negro Modelo guy and it's always been fresh and very cold. Their tortillas are very fresh and tasty. I can tell the difference. I enjoy visiting the market on the way out, what a benefit. The restaurant closes at 8:30 through the week. I highly recommend El Ahorro. read more

We drive up from outside Winston-Salem for the food here. It is amazing. The carnitas platter is massive and excellent. The torta Cubana is the best sandwich in the area. The fresh fruit drinks are our favorites! Try to save room for desert because the tres leches cake and the sopillas are great as well. Vastly exceeded even my most optimistic expectations. The region is blanketed with mediocre, canned Mexican restaurants. The kind that use Queso dip to lure the local palette in. This is not one of those places. Sure, this place has Queso dip topped burritos, fair enough. But they also respect their customers enough to have sopes. And lengua. And to put tacos and tostadas ahead of the cream-covered Tex-Mex options. I tried the al pastor (sopes) and the Pollo Tinga (tostada). The al pastor was rich and spicy and made with quality pork. The Tinga was milder than I expected (though the server did warm me of this). The vegetables and toppings (creama, avocado, cotija cheese) were very fresh and high quality as well - a very pleasant surprise given the season. The tortilla chips were fresh-made, I think, and quite good. My meal's freshness placed it closer to the quality one gets at a hip urban farm-to-table organic place, but with the price of a taqueria-in-a-market. FYI, the restaurant is separated from the grocery and very welcoming. The service was outstanding (despite being busy). Oh, and the California Burrito is a *monster*. If you're practicing for an eating contest, it's just right. read more

Not sure how to rate this place. There is no parking at the location. We had to park across the street. We went into the restaurant and were seated. We sat at the table for 20 minutes without having any interaction with anyone. The food looked good, but I unfortunately, didn't get to try it due to their poor service. El Ahorro earns 5 stars in my book! However, Mango Peel, the new rebrand, is a step back at 4. Great food, but I preferred the more authentic feel of El Ahorro. The new facility is very up to date and modern, however I feel as if the success has led to expansion that caused a slight decline in quality. This is a cool little store with a lot of really neat Mexican food items, but the fairly sizeable restaurant is the freshest food around. The tacos (6 or 7 meat choices) are awesome. Came here to meet some friends, would have never known it was a restaurant, signage suggests it's grocery store, small dining area, wait staff friendly and attentive. Shrimp tacos were fantastic. We got it to go order that had terrible service if you can imagine that with a to go order. The food was good but they didn't give you very much at all not even unreasonable amount to be honest. The staff are in different and don't seem to care one bit about whether you are there or not. My pallet normally would prefer a home cooked meal but I decided to try this place to see how close to home cooked it was. I have been here several times and they do seem to be doing better than at the beginning. I have order the tacos de lengua, al pastor, asada, and tripa. The tripa tacos were a bit on the hard side and not my favorite at all. However, their lengua is always cooked very well. Their sopes are one of my favorites as it has just the right amount of meat, beans, and garnishments. The one male waiter there is very kind and always making sure my drink is full. However, some of the waitresses are not as friendly and tend to talk to those they know rather than tend to their customers. They can certainly do better with communicating with everyone that comes into the store/restaurant. The butcher is always helpful and suggestions are always welcomed. However, it would help if they could all speak at least a 50% English to help those that do not speak Spanish. Overall, it is a good place to eat. read more

Wow, what a change! First let me say the new expansion is beautiful and roomy. Every thing else in the restaurant side has gone way, way down. 4 of us had lunch yesterday. We were served chips and salsa right away as usual. The chips were so stale! The salsa recipe must have been changed because it had very little flavor. Took forever just to get our drink order.(3 waters and a tea) Server forgot lemon and we had to remind her twice. She didn't seem pleased about it either. Food came about 30 minutes later and everyone's was cold! No cheese in the quesadilla. Beef in the fajitas was so tough. Tamales were stone cold and she did send those back. The rest of us just ate ours because she seemed mad that we sent the tamales back. Forgot our side order of crema too. The manager had to refill our drinks for us. This has never happened before! Yesterday we stopped in for lunch at the restaurant inside the store and had a delicious lunch. I had two beef and one pastor gorditas and my fiancee had pastor sopas and the whole meal was of excellent quality. The meat was very flavorful and the vegetables and crema fresca and cheese was very fresh. The tomatillo sauce was delish. This great little restaurant is located inside a very nice Mexican Market on N. Bridge St., the "main drag"through Elkin. No worries about a language barrier - English is spoken here. The sign out front states "best tacos in town", so we "bit" and went in to see if the claim was true, and for us, it is! We love fish tacos, so that's what we ordered, and they were out of sight!! The tortillas are handmade fresh. They were small, light, had a little bit of grill char on them - yummy!! The fish was very lightly breaded tilapia, pan fried - not in the least bit greasy - topped with lettuce, cilantro, tomato and a bit of white sauce (yogurt?) Red and green salsa are available. Guacamole salad was fresh and chunky (as opposed to a mashed paste), which is how we prefer it. These are without a doubt the best fish tacos we have had anywhere nearby. Price is very reasonable, service was friendly and good.This is certainly our new favorite spot for Mexican food in Elkin, which is home base for us! The only minor negative thing is that the parking lot is tight - not too many slots, but you could probably park across the street if the lot was full. read more

this is my 3rd time here and honestly the service has gotten worse each time. this time around our server took 10 minutes to get our initial drink and the chips and i had also ordered a cheese dip which took more time than it should have. the food has always been good here it's just the service that really bugs me. we haven't seen or heard from our server in 30 MINUTES! This place is really delicious. It' hard to drag me out of my kitchen & convince me to go out to eat what I can cook at home. But this place has done it. you get the usual chips & dip which are great but I had to try the tacos everyone loves so much & I must say they did not disappoint! although I have tried the posole verde which I didn't like much, it was way too thick.
