I've been to other locations of Tlaquepaque and was generally pleased with the food and service. This was my first time at the Mount Airy location. It is in a very convenient spot. The staff at this location are great. They were very on top of service and payment. On to the food. Most Mexican food around is heavily Americanized. That's too bad, because it loses what makes it good to begin with. The chips are fine. The salsa is not even remotely spicy and there are no offers of better salsa. We ordered cheese dip which is fine, but not amazing. The entire family was with us and two of them are children, so as usual there were tenders and fries. I tasted the tenders and fries. The tenders were alright, nothing special, middle of the road at best. The fries were pretty good and had the right texture and salt while not being over or under cooked. There was also a plain cheeseburger which looked like it was done right. I had tacos al pastor which came with rice and beans. The three tacos were very good and came with a nice hot sauce along with lime, onion and cilantro. Great tacos. The rice and beans were bland and not really worth eating. My wife had a chicken "burrito California", which was basically chunks of chicken in a large tortilla covered with cheese. There was a Mexican salad on the plate and some sliced avocado as well. I don't know if the intention was to allow the customer to put the veggies into the burrito, but with the way it was plated and the cheese bath I don't think that would work. It was definitely not a burrito one would pick up and eat. My wife wasn't thrilled with it. Dessert at restaurants is a rare occasion for us, but we had worked all day and had no lunch, so we opted for that. I bought a flan and a "fried ice cream" for us to share. Neither of the kids would touch either one, which was unexpected for me. There was nothing on the dessert menu that was more kid-friendly than fried ice cream. Oh well. The flan wasn't the best I've had, but it's a basic dessert and I liked it. The fried ice cream is basically a frozen ball of ice cream rolled in cornflakes. They drop that into a fried soft tortilla bowl and cover it with whipped cream, chocolate and strawberry sauce. I have to say that it wasn't great. The cornflakes were a weird texture, maybe stale, but definitely not crunchy as advertised. My wife summed up the dinner. "I'll look for a different place next time." read more

I came with a friend who wanted to eat here. I had seen this restaurant for years but never ate here; I wouldn't have missed anything by not going. The restaurant felt kinda small, though there were lots of tables in the back, that you can't see from the front. Sat down and was surprised at how expensive the menu prices were for a small town like this! The server came quick and took order and was very attentive throughout the whole meal. I ordered a garden salad which was decent. The Jalisco fajitas that I ordered were terrible- had lots of zucchini and broccoli which is yuck with fajitas and the meat tasted weird, not fresh. If the service hadn't been good, I would have given this place 0 stars if I could. I thought that I had had bad Mexican food before, but this was the worst! Slow service, took over an hour to get food. Food tasted like something in a frozen dinner I could heat up at home. Waitress couldn't remember drink order numerous times. The whole place was very odd- hills up and down to get to different parts of the restaurant- be careful if you have young children or handicapped folks in your party. Ordered take out. 13$ for peluza, it was pathetic. Very small in size and what I did get was mostly rice and onions. 16$ for cowboy burrito and it was mostly beans. We were traveling back North from a vacation and decided to break up the trip in Mt Airy. We found Tlaquepaque within walking distance to our hotel. It was a solid Mexican dinner! We had chicken fajitas, the Mt Airy special, standard cheese quesadilla and a combo with enchilada, Chiles Rellenos, etc. everything was very good in the classic Mexican American style. The small town of Mount Airy, North Carolina, is somewhat like a European tourist town with its "historic" Main Street patronized by visitors and some locals, and its "modern" section where locals actually go to shop, dine and fill up their cars. This is U.S. Route 601, south of the center of town, enroute to I-74 and Winston-Salem. Tlaquepaque restaurant is in an unpretentious strip shopping center, along with a Staples, supermarket, Tractor Supply outlet, and a Mexican-style *Carniceria*. We thought the food, prices and service were all first-rate. The manager and waiter made sure we were happy and brought a refill of the red salsa and excellent tortilla chips, domestic draft beers (including Coors Light) were on sale for $1.25, and the four-different-enchilada dinner was authentic, tasty and filling. SO filling we could only split a flan for dessert. As a result dinner for two, with tip, was just over thirty dollars. A memorable, enjoyable restaurant and worth a return visit. read more

Don't eat here! The food is terrible, and I think they use imitation cheese. Taco was filled with hamburger, no flavoring or spices. Large step down from the front room to the back room. Awful service. Got seated and asked for cheese and one of the girls said she would tell the waitress and we asked our waitress and she didn't. Our chips were burnt. We ordered some chicken nuggets and they was burnt, asked for some different ones and she was rude. The waitress was filling up our drinks and spilt it all over the table and just walked away. I love this place because of the food and the service. One of the chefs Jessie is amazing in the kitchen his food is always flavorful his plating technique is clean and appealing to your eyes. I tend to have been a regular with this restaurant since my family and I have first discovered it back in 2005. First of all, it's an excellent authentic Mexican restaurant! The overall vibe of the restaurant is lively, and you can definitely expect business to be booming during the week days and weekends. The only complaint that I have had with this restaurant is that since there have been at least one or two new employees coming in, some of them have been a little rude in terms of providing service. But do not let the occasional rude server get to you. This is coming from about 2 instances over 30 or so visits to the restaurant. Speaking from experience, the servers are for the most part friendly and willing to wait for you. The food itself is amazing. For starters, I would definitely recommend getting the carnitas, fajita nachos or the pelusa. Those are quite some excellent dishes. And for those who do wonder, there is alcohol served at this place. Overall, I give this a 4/5. Excellent food, great atmosphere, but the service might need to use a slight improvement in attitude. However, it really should not be that much of a problem. Definitely recommend here if you plan to visit Mount Airy. read more

We had lunch here today and while it was good Tex Mex food it sure is not authentic Mexican! The complimentary salsa was better than average and the chips were about average. I ordered a mini taco salad from the lunch menu. It was good but when they say mini they mean exactly that! Very small when you consider the price is 5.99! The wife got the chicken fajitas and they were delicious. She let me have some when she saw how tiny my meal was. Plus her meal was what I consider a large portion. In taking a trip to my boyfriend's hometown, we landed here... It's one of his local haunts. The decor isn't the prettiest in the world but the yumminess makes up for it. My enchiladas were fantastic. Very flavorful! The prices were very reasonable and the service was in point. My one negative was that the queso that we ordered with the complimentary chips was very runny. This is my personal favorite Mexican restaurant in Mount Airy. My wife and I eat here at least once a week. I live their food and the staff is always great. The manager usually meets us at the door and shakes our hand. They are very busy in the weekend but it usually still doesn't take too long to get seated and served. My favorite dish here is the Texas Pelusa... just imagine arroz con pollo with a few grilled onions peppers and tomatoes and then add steak and shrimp... it's great. I've been to the Mt. Airy location as well as Pilot Mtn. location and while the food is excellent, the portion size is sad. I ordered 2 pelusas to go in Pilot & had to go back because the food BARELY covered the bottom on the tin plates they were put in. They remade them and lets up keep the 1st 2 which was cool, but the 2nd ones weren't much better. One pelusa at El Agavero would make 2 of Tlaquepaque's. At the Mt. Airy location I ordered the combo plate with burrito, enchilada, and taco. The burrito looked like an enchilada. El Agavero is the better choice for Mexican in Mt. Airy. As far as the Pilot location, I'd go to Mi Pueblo in King first. read more

Honestly, I am not a huge Mexican food person, however, My family will definitely be coming back! It looked tiny on the outside, but it's quite spacious. I liked all the decor as well. When we walked in, we were quickly seated and drinks were served. My mom and I had a coupon for bogo on the pick 3 entree and my boyfriend got the super fajita quesadilla. The food was amazing! The portion was large but we took it home and had some yummy food for the next day. The waiter was very attentive and answered our questions.
