The salsas are freshly prepared and the menu is very diverse, even has a very large selection of freshly prepared vegetarian items. Mediocre at best. The restaurant is bright and clean. Service was fast. However, there are two large TVs that were playing CNN very loudly. Chips and salsa were brought to the table right away, portion was enough for one person, and there were two of us dining. Chips were ok. Salsa was better. I ordered the lunch special with carnita taco and chicken enchilada. It came with rice and beans. The taco only had meat, onions, and cilantro on it. When I asked for hot sauce or sour cream the server pointed toward the salsa on the table and said it was hot sauce. The enchilada was the highlight, very flavorful! The rice lacked flavor and the beans were bland and cold, I actually left all but one bite behind. My husband got the fajita burrito and he said he would not order it again (and he has never met a burrito he didn't like). The inside was cold. Lots of fresh ingredients but the meat was the only thing seasoned. We wanted to love it.... but sadly won't be back. read more

Best Mexican food in DeForest. Highly recommend this restaurant. Always get large portions.

Off the beaten path, looks from the outside like a hole in the wall cafe or something. Once inside, everything looks trendy, especially the plates and the food on them. They brew their own tequila and proudly display kegs of it. The open kitchen allows the chef to keep track of the dining room. Dining area is not that large, but it is comfortable, welcoming and modern in appearance. Service is friendly and professional, especially if you speak a little Spanish. If you want hot sauce, they have an excellent house variety. Chips and salsa appear to be made on site, and they are very tasty. The menu is pretty cumbersome, offering all manner of delights from less than $5.00 to $45/plate, from sope, huaraches and gorditas to ceviche and other fancy fare. They have a bar and serve up a variety of soft and hard drinks. Plan on leftovers. If you are traveling between Madison and Baraboo, check this place out on your GPS and plan your lunch or dinner here. You won't be sorry. As a note, we had no idea it was there but were looking for a restaurant advertised on a highway travel sign, left over from a previous restaurant. There isn't a lot of advertisement, so you might not find it if you don't check it out on GPS. read more

Stopped there with the family today 8/12/20 for lunch. We are not from the area and we're just passing through. This was the best burrito I've ever had (and mexican food is my favorite so I've eaten plenty of burritos.) I got the burrito fajita with chorizo. Taste and meal presentation was above and beyond. I even went in to to tell the chef and manager how impressed I was with the meal and service. We will make this a stop for now on whenever driving by. read more

We ordered online and when we went to get our food the place was closed. We contacted the manager and he offered to make it right if we wanted our food the next night or we could get our money back. We opted to get our food. We called at 5:15 and asked for it to be ready at 6:30. We arrived to pick up our food and waited another 20 minutes. On the upside the food is good. The chicken fajita burrito is big and flavorful. At $10.24 for the margarita it was not worth it. Bottom line is that they did not make it right. read more

I have been to El Alegre about ten times now. The food is always good and the service is always good. Deforest finally has a decent Mexican restaurant! The only thing i could suggest changing is put a sign on the door to find your way back inside from the restroom. read more

The manager/owner Brian has gone above and beyond for his customers and continues to try and better their experience each time they visit. El Alegre offers a diverse selection of food and drinks that caters to customers of all ages. The attention to detail that they take when it comes to serving your food and plating it is what makes El Alegre stand out compared to other Mexican restaurants. A simple $3 dish can look as much as a $10 dish while also being packed full of flavors. Anyone near the Madison or Deforest area I would definitely recommend they stop in at El Alegre to experience the great food and people and people here. I wrote a review a while ago about a pricing confusion- which although still doesn't make sense, it doesn't stifle my love for their food! I swear I pick up food from here multiple times a week. I'm addicted. They don't have fast food prices- but that's because this isn't a fast food joint. A couple extra bucks is worth it for the quality!! And it really isn't that expensive- especially in comparison to other local restaurants. I recommend this place to family and friends whenever they're looking for a new place to eat. First visit here and I was blown away. As soon as the chips arrive, you know you're in for something special. They're tasty and fresh, as is the salsa (there's a hotter one available if you ask). I reviewed alot of Mexican resturants in the BD, De for, sun prairie area, we were needing a good Mexican fix. Unfortunately we didn't get it. I ordered enchiladas with mole ( regular not sweet) it was thick and pasty and tasted some what burnt. My friend ordered a burrito which he said was good and was really big. We must have gotten there just at opening cuz we were the only ones there but had to go to the bar to let them know we were ready to order. Food came really fast. Atmosphere is bland and sterile. Going to give it 1 more try but won't be ordering mole. read more

I love this restaurant! Best Mexican restaurant I have ever ate at! We have trying several dishes without disappointment. My favorite is the Al alegre chicken tacos, I'm a cilantro and avocado fan and these are simply amazing, a squeeze of lime, caramelized onions, so tasty! The tamales, fajitas, burrito fajitas is also great. The fried ice cream was also good. The presentation and freshness is also what sets them above the rest! Great job. Went there this evening 1/15/20 and was not at all impressed. I had enchilada suizas...the side of refried beans tasted off...not good. The enchilda chicken was dry and hard :( the green sauce on top was not very good either. The atmosphere was bland...dark walls with nothing on them to look at...old looking caramel brown booths...very unappealing and cold. The waitress was very nice and did a good job...all the other staff that was around seemed very nice and friendly. I really wanted to like this place but it's a definite no for me. We decided to try out the newest place in town to go out to eat to. We were immediately greeted and sat down with chips and two kinds of salsa (free of charge). The menu has tons of options, and a kids menu with the basics, including chicken tenders. I got a steak tostada and a chicken tamale, they were amazing and authentic. The wife got a mole burrito and the kids got a burrito and chicken tenders. All the food was very good and came in a very timely fashion. We went on a Thursday night and it was half price margarita night, we were pleasantly surprised and ordered a couple. They were probably the best margaritas we've ever had. **only bad thing we experience was our waitress was not very attentive at all. It wasn't busy, but we were passed by a few times with empty glasses and plates. Two other staff members did attend to us though. Overall great place to go. Went to El Alegre to grab a burrito for lunch. The staff was friendly and courteous, the service was fast (it wasn't too busy) and the restaurant is clean. I'm giving 3 stars because I ordered chicharron as the protein. I like to try different things and, though I've never had it, that sounded good In the menu it does say it's fried pork rind, but if it was fried I couldn't detect it. it was just globs of pork skin. I'll take partial ownership of that since I've never had chicharron in a burrito before - maybe that's just how it's done in the region the recipe came from. I'm guessing everything else is good and I'll go back... then re-post after I've tried something else. Back again tonight, with my daughter, sister and bro in law. My sister and I had the Verde Burrito with carnitas and it was great. Service was fast and friendly. My daughter (vegetarian) had 2 vegetarian tostadas (they are small) and she loved them.
