El Amigo brings an authentic Mexican experience and cuisine to this small town, they do offer Tex-Mex options is you choose (rolling my eyes). This family owned and run restaurant is easy on your pocketbook but is amazingly attentive and the food is delicious, because mom's in the kitchen sharing generations of home style cooking. We chose to sit inside due to the extreme humidity outside, but there is a beautiful outdoor patio also available - this is a simple restaurant but after only a moment here you'll feel comfortable and welcomed, it's like family serving family. After ordering our drinks, warm chips and a bowl of perfectly balanced salsa was brought out before placing our lunch order - everything is cooked to order so although the wait time is reasonable they don't rush things here everything is made to order and one bite into their freshly made corn tortillas you won't care because time will stop as you savor all the freshly prepared goodness. The food, well I didn't try everything but then again after a healthy sampling I can't imagine anything served here falls below the description of outstanding. The tacos are amazing, again served open face on those delicious warm homemade corn tortillas, they are filled with your choice of meats including steak, pork, chicken, shrimp, beef tongue, goat, etc.or a medley of grilled veggies if that's your thing - all are topped with freshly chopped onion and cilantro. This can be paired with delicious homemade beans and rice and an amazing radish salad concoction. We also enjoyed a delicate pork tamale (so good) and a cheesy enchiladas (exceptional) - we cleaned our plates and was looking for a shady spot to grab a siesta. We are camping in the area and we will definitely be returning here over the next ten days and anytime we are close to this area in the future- this is one of those places that you must experience if given the opportunity... read more

This cute little place located in Crescent city reminds me of the food I used to get where I grew up in the San Joaquin valley Hanford Calif. The food is so good you just can't get enough. It's cooked to order an the flavors are amazing. I have had the pork tacos, grilled chicken tacos an carne asada tacos as well as the tamales all were so very good an the flavors were amazing. The menu is simple but has a lot of options depending on what you want. They also offer Daily specials as well as breakfast in the morning. Good little taco shack. Had chicken and steak soft tacos on corn tortillas. The flavor was good. I got the tacos Mexican style. My only compliant is that the tacos got mushy quickly and began falling apart making it difficult to eat. Also the steak was a bit fatty and tough, I would not get steak again. The green salsa verde hot sauce was ok. I usually love adding lime juice but the tacos already had quite a limey flavor. read more

So. After a long day of yardwork and food deprivation, my tastebuds were ready for a taco salad. I went into El Amigo restaurant for take out, waited for over 15 minutes, as the owner and her young son were the only employees present. I received my order in a bag that was very securely tied. Upon arrival at my home, I quickly discovered that my much coveted 'taco salad' was in fact a thin layer of tortilla chips, with less than a handful of unseasoned ground beef, a few beans and nothing more. No lettuce, tomato or anything that comes to mind when one visualizes a taco salad. The time was after 7pm: their website stated that the closing time was 7pm. I decided to call anyway, as there were people still in the restaurant when I left and I live very in close proximity. The phone rang and rang and rang with no answer. I made the decision to call the next morning. The next day, I called and explained to the owner the situation. She told me to call back in 2 minutes so that she could check her caller ID and verify that I indeed did call the restaurant. Really? Seriously? When I called back, she reluctantly admitted that she did see that I had called and then sarcastically offered to replace my taco salad...with an attitude that was unacceptable. The implication was that I was a liar. This was unacceptable. Will I recommend her establishment? Never. Will I ever go back? Never. The lesson learned here is to always check your to go bag and verify that your order is correct...or go to Baja Taco. Excellent food there without the attitude. read more

I was in Crescent City with my parents and we happened upon this restaurant and are glad we did. I think this is hands down the best Mexican food I have ever eaten anywhere. The woman who runs the restaurant is so outgoing and humble - this is food your Mexican grandmother would make if you had a Mexican grandmother.
