    Carnitas Combo

In a town that has no clue as to what real Mexican food is, this place does a good job. One can tell the owners really want to serve truly authentic Mexican cuisine, but they're holding themselves back because of the community they're in. Which is sad in many ways. The appetizers are good, but the salsa that they bring with the chips to start is barely ok and caters to a clientele that has no idea as to what real salsa is. We will be back because the alternatives in the area aren't a match but next time we will know to ask for the real stuff! We also didn't like the kids of other patrons running all over the place - it was annoying and bad parenting on display. But the owners were tolerant and there wasn't much they could do.

Stopped at a new place for us in Scottsboro. Delicious torta and grilled chicken nachos. Horchata is some of the best I have had.

Great Mexican food! So glad we found this place while staying at the lake. They have a lunch buffet on Sunday and also a full menu.

Chips and salsa were brought to the table without having to ask, which is always a welcome touch. Service was attentive considering there was only one server handling the floor. Props to them for keeping things running smoothly. The food was middle-of-the-road -- not the best Mexican I've had, but certainly not the worst either. If you're looking for a solid, no-surprises meal, it'll do the job. The atmosphere is actually one of the highlights. It's a nice bar setting, well-lit, and wasn't overly loud during our early visit -- easy to hold a conversation, which isn't always a given at a bar. Now, the restrooms could use some attention. They're a bit dated and in need of updating. I did get a chuckle out of the handwashing requirement sign posted prominently on the wall -- right next to the one soap dispenser that happened to be completely empty. It makes you wonder how closely that policy is actually enforced. Overall, La Cabaña by JUAN is a fine spot for drinks and a casual bite. Just maybe bring your own hand sanitizer.

The place itself is small, quaint, and authentically Mexican, and the server was super sweet though not Mexican at all. Prices are VERY reasonable, though they've gone up slightly I think in the past few years (to be expected). Here's what we tried: -Mex Sausage Taco: 8/10 - Small, but great flavor. The tortilla on this taco was stunning: it was a corn tortilla, yet it was so thick and soft. That's not something you see everyday. The sausage (chorizo) was well seasoned and nicely crumbly, and it was an overall pretty good street taco. -Aztec Steak Burrito: 9/10 - The flavor of the meat inside the burrito was so good, as the steak was tender and well seasoned. (The burrito comes with a huge portion of mexican rice and refried beans, and while the rice is your average if not a bit less flavorful mexican rice, the refried beans are very watery and pretty lacking in richness.) The burrito is definitely the important part of this plate, and it hit the mark for me. -Chicken Tamale: 7/10 - Chicken was good, though I wish they had put cheese in with the chicken to add some extra texture and spice things up. It was a well made tamale, just not the best I've had. -Dobladas: 5/10 - We weren't sure what to expect here. Normally dobladas are a guatemalan dish where tortillas are simply folded and fried in a pan with cheese. This was almost like a gordita-esque dish, consisting of an even thicker than normal tortilla with chicken, lettuce, and sour cream. The chicken isn't packing a big punch, and while the tortilla is good, the lettuce and the sour cream don't add enough flavor to really make the dish sing. It's good though, and something more on the fresh side if that's what you're looking for. -Chicken Quesadilla: 2/10 - Wow, so so disappointing. The cheese was barely melted, the tortilla was dry, and the chicken was lackluster in flavor. Not worth it at all. Wouldn't come again, but not a bad experience.

We were seated immediately by friendly staff. We ordered the queso and guacamole; the queso was watery with no spices but good. The guacamole looked like it had been whipped but had some spice to it. We ordered the ribeye steak and were told it was around 12 ounces. So we asked for an extra plate and split it. The green peppers and onions on the steak made it a flavorful entry. For dessert we had the sopaipillias. There were four with ice cream in the center. A total of around $40 plus tip for a great meal!

Not many other close restaurants nearby, so expectations are low). When we ordered today, we pointed to the lunch menu. We said lunch menu. Yet we were charged $5.00 more than the menu prices. Ordered way before the lunch menu time ended. Waiter spoke to the owner in Spanish. Owner would not fix our bill. We had no choice but to take the difference from the tip. There must of been a language barrier, for our waiter. Otherwise the food was good today. The cheese stuffed peppers are always good. As is the guacamole salad. They always accommodate our vegetarian family members. Sadly we will not be back because of the way we were treated today. We've been customers for several years. Daughter of owners actually made a joke about me. Very tacky. And so very rude. I didn't yell or do anything rude to deserve that.
