It's a nice place to eat. The food is well priced and there is a wide variety of selections. I usually get carnitas or the pollo asado. But I tried some of the seafood dishes and they were just as good. You get chips and dip as soon as you sit down. Food comes out pretty quickly so there isn't a lot of waiting. Only issue I had was I ordered Coke Zero and noticed on my last refill that it was being poured from a 12 oz can. So I paid 3 bucks for a 12 oz soda. But besides that we enjoy coming here for dinner. read more

The place was busy, which was a good sign.  We waited a few minutes to be seated.   Ordered the margaritas...which were a watered down,  overly sweet version of a great cocktail.  Didn't order a second.  Dinner was delivered with a couple mix-ups,  but things worked out.   The staff is friendly. The food is okay.   The fajitas had a good flavor and the steak nachos were good too. The prices are reasonable. Good local place if you don't want to travel somewhere else. read more

We love this restaurant both the one in Powhatan and Midlothian. But, the last time we were at the one in Midlothian the music was so loud you couldn't hear the person next to you. My wife asked three times if they could turn it down and if they did it was very little. She won't go there anymore. I like music as much as the next guy, but I also like to be able to talk and listen to the people with me. Why must they play it so loud? read more

AMAZING mexican food. we drove from chester ( a good 30 min drive at least) to enjoy a delicious and authentic mexican meal. everything is made from scratch. they have a creative menu (carribean fajitas= pure bliss), good service, and are super clean. i always judge a mexican restaurant by their salsa and queso, and they immediately passed my test! i recently ate at a different local mexican restaurant and the whole time kept thinking about ECA and wishing i was there instead! i cant recommend this place enough. read more

Food quality and service have come way down since the establishment first opened. We prefer the Plaza Azteca. Our recent visit to El Cerro involved a 2 inch piece of broom straw in our food. Complained to the waiter, he said sorry. read more

OK - to be candid, I am a bit torn in writing this review. El Cerro Azul is my favorite restaurant and part of me wants to give it a low rating so it won't become even more popular. But they work hard at being good, so I can't bring myself to lie about them. I'll have to be honest and just continue to deal with the crowds. ECA has 2 locations, one in Powhatan (where I live now) and one in Midlothian (where I used to live). We frequent both of them, often eating at one or the other twice a week. This is not your average mexican joint. The food and the service are excellent and these guys continually work to update and improve the decor and the menu. Check out the Patron bottle light fixtures! In addition to their excellent take on standard Mexican fare (burritos, fajitas, tacos, etc.) the chef and owner create very unique and authentic specials all the time. The most popular items are then added to the menu. For a couple of example, try the Street Tacos, or the Quesadilla Tona. Are you kidding me? Mexican food with BACON??? If that's not enough for you, then drop by on dollar tacos night or wait til Thursday and enjoy dollar Margaritas. Just be sure to get there early! read more

The first time I ate here I found the food to be good but was not quite what I was expecting. I find myself assuming it is a different region of Mexican food than I am used to. My husband and I went back recently and we started by ordering the cheese sauce for the tortilla chips and found it quite addictive. I do not remember what all we ordered but all of it was good. This is most likely where we will go when I want Mexican as the food is good, reasonably priced and close to my house. read more

The best Mexican food and it's in Powhatan! Menu has a great selection and the prices are reasonable especially lunch! Dinner portions are huge, plan to bring some home. Staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is nice. Taco night (Tuesday I think) can be VERY crowded. Wish they would expand! There is another location in Midlothian Village . I definitely prefer Powhatan both for food and staff, but I might be biased since I've been a customer there since they opened like 10 years ago. read more

Food and Service are the best in town out of all mexican restaurants!! I'm not sure what planet the negative reviewers are from, but this place has always been awesome. I'm sure it might depend on what you order, but every single dish I have gotten was always very tasty and plated nicely. Best Mexican food East of the Mississippi. Salsa is good. Guac is good. Family friendly. Affordable. And they should get 5 stars for $1 Margarita night alone. We recently moved to Powhatan and have been on the hunt for good local places. Coming from 16 years of living in the city, we've generally found the local joints to be very disappointing. But, this was a incredibly refreshing experience - I might normally put this place at 4 stars, but given the mediocre meals we've had recently, this place really impressed me! Nice atmosphere - a bit surprising from what you might think walking up to the place. Great service. Great food - nice to see some creative options that go beyond every other run-of-the-mill Mex spot. Guac was fresh and delicious. Chips were also fresh - salsa was good - I was not a huge fan of the white sauce (little to sweet for me), but others liked it. Our dinners were excellent - we tasted each others' meals and they actually had distinct flavor profiles - not just a bunch of beans and cheese. Only sad we didn't save room for dessert. We have now found a spot in the area that we'll be patronizing regularly - yay! read more

Don't let the outside deceive you! This place is a hidden gem. Went there Saturday night. Nice decor inside. Great service and the food was excellent. The salsa/chips provided had a nice spice to it - not too spicy or tomatoey flavor. Had the Fajitas Al Pastor and it was a huge portion, had great flavor, fresh veggies and pineapple, and cooked very well and sizzling at the table. We also had a shrimp quesadilla which was stuffed full. No beer on tap but we can overlook that since the food and service were very good This place beats any "chain" any day. This little restaurant out in Powhatan is a gem. The food is consistently good. The only thing I wish was that they had the white ranch/jalepoano. How excited were we after moving to Powhatan to find that the Mexican restaurant was so delicious and so authentic. The food is just fantastic. I've never ordered a meal I haven't been impressed with. The portions are good. The prices are fair, although I agree with a prior reviewer that they've gone up after the new renovation. The weekly specials are unbelievably good. $1 Margarita night is an unbeatable deal. The salsa is amazing, and I sometimes pop in after grocery shopping just to pick up some salsa for home. We have a vegetarian in our house, and the vegetarian menu is quite impressive, and the vegetarian meals are so much better than I've ever seen in another Mexican restaurant. Usually, peppers and onions have to suffice as the veggies as substitutes to meat, but at El Cerro Azul, there is asparagus, squash, potatoes, and more in delicious meals that don't at all feel like substitutes. In fact, as a meat lover, I have on occasion ordered a vegetarian meal here because they are so delicious. read more
