I'm not really sure about the negative reviews, because El Charro was my favorite place for dinner during my week-long stay in Dilley, TX. As I read other reviews, I noticed folks mentioned that the food and service were better in the evenings, which might be why I had such good luck? Anyway, I visited El Charro twice and as a current pescatarian, I was grateful to see so many vegetarian/pescatarian options that looked delicious. My colleagues were also impressed with the variety of dishes, and each dish that was ordered was consistently tasty and presented nicely. We ordered: Spinach enchiladas Caldo de ocho mares + tortilla soup Shrimp & Tilapia with garlic sauce + veggies + rice Shrimp "a la diabla" with veggies + rice We were also grateful for the full bar! Drinks were presented nicely & were very tasty as well. I was very very pleased with the taste of the fish and shrimp, the dish was full of flavor and didn't feel too heavy. My only "complaint" would be that the vegetables served weren't very fresh, as I could tell they were previously frozen. Otherwise, the rice and corn tortillas were tasty and authentic and made for great meals overall. Service was always friendly and efficient! I definitely recommend El Charro if you're in the area, as the options are limited, and this is a good spot for sure. read more

Service was mediocre but food was good. As long as you're not in a rush... I got the chilaquiles and my husband got the egg & potato breakfast tacos. The eggs for the chilaquiles were cooked over medium as I asked for, the green sauce over the chips was flavorful with a bit of heat. The refried beans were good and sprinkled with queso fresco. The breakfast tacos were wrapped on a fluffy, tender tortilla and the eggs and potatoes were cooked well. They dropped off a bottle of red sauce and that was tasty. read more

Looked up online states you can order online, but you can't. Strike 1. Called to try and place an order, the phone rang busy for 2 hours straight. I went in person and they said the phone never rang? Right! Strike 2. On 09/25/2024 went in person to place an order of 3 fajita tacos with avocado. I left when I got home I found 3 dry fajita tacos no avocado!!!!! Strike 3 You are OUT!!! We were referred to this restaurant by a coworker. We arrived for dinner on a weekend, and the place was half full. The whole restaurant is pretty clean and well cared for. They welcomed us with their salsa and chips (their chips are corn tortillas chips mixed with a few flower tortilla chips). We were greeted by a beautiful waitress, who was very pleasant and attentive. Considering how many people were seated, we were surprised how fast the food came out. All the food was well cooked and plentiful, the steaks were cooked right and seasoned well, their fajitas, tacos and carnitas, we're all flavorful. We all had a really good experience. This one star review is only for their hamburgers. Several photos posted online showed burgers with grill lines, so I thought Flame Grilled Burgers! Sooooo hard to find in South Texas! I even called and asked the guy on the phone if the burgers were grilled or fried on a flattop griddle, and he said they were grilled. Well, the burger meat turned out to be the pre-cooked frozen kind with the grill marks imprinted already on the meat, with hardly any flavor. Ugh. Burger King does better burgers with grill marks. Found this inside my michelada after refilling it the second time with the rest of my beer. The server/bartender laughed it off as if it was an everyday occurrence. No apology, no "let me comp your meal". Nothing. Then they have the audacity to charge me for the replacement drink!!! SMFH!!!!! Maybe this place needs a second chance but one time was enough for us. The service was terrible. Our waitress took our order, brought our food out and sat down at a table nearby and ate. We tried to get her attention several times but she was sitting with three other employees chatting and eating so we went without a second round of beers. The food arrived to our table on cold plates and when we asked about our charro beans the waitress replied "yeah" and went back to the kitchen for two bowls. Really didn't like waiting 10 minutes and yes I timed because it happened twice. The waitresses seen me walk in but were more interested in staring at their phones right in front of me than asking me what I wanted to drink. Then after I finished had to ask twice for ticket. I can't believe that this place is still in business. This has to be the worst Mexican food I have eaten. I ordered a beef enchilada plate that came with rice and beans. Cause how can you mess up a enchilada plate.... Right? Well some how they did, the beef in the enchiladas was plain didn't have any flavor, and I took three bites out of it thinking that the first bite was the worst but every bite was worse than the one before. That beef had fillers in it like crazy. The beans were not good at all I guess bc they tasted like they came from a can? Not to mention the rice, it's like they had scrapped the bottom or they didn't fully cook it. Because I didn't find a single grain of rice that wasn't hard out of the 4 bites I took out of it. Hmm this is about a an average restaurant. I've been about 6-7 times now because of lack of options in the area. Margaritas - poor. We ordered one blended & one on the rocks, both w/o salt. Got two mediocre ones both on the rocks and both w salt. Service - poor. Would give this a 0 star if possible! First of all the waiter/bartender has a BAD attitude! It seemed like he did not want our group to be there! You can tell from the tone of his voice! He had his cap flipped backwards and looked mad! Our order was literally wrong and then he blamed us saying its our fault! We ordered one veggie fajita to share and one chicken fajita to share without cactus! But they brought individual plates and had more cactus than anything else! Some of the stuff we ordered was not even brought out! To solve the cactus problem, they brought out plates and said you guys can remove the cactus! Manager also did not work with us! The Wife and I were here for the weekend staying at one of the hotels on rt 35. We decided to give the place a shot and were not disappointed. They make amazing mixed drinks and the food was fantastic. I had the spinach enchiladas and margaritas with el presidente tequila, and they tasted fantastic. The prices were fair as well(compared to Chicago). The service was also on point.The only thing I'd say was a con was the heat. But there's not much you can do with 107 degree weather. My shrimp diablo was awesome. One of the guys enjoyed his chicken jalapeño enchiladas. The third person had a different experience. He ordered hard shelled tacos with sour cream and no lettuce or tomatoes. His food showed up with lettuce, tomatoes, and carrots on the tacos. He also had no sour cream. He ate half of one taco and asked me to look at his taco meat to see if I thought of it was cooked. It was red, not pink, red. Completely raw. Wow. Never had steak tartar tacos before. Never planned on this delicacy. Never would have. My friend is now is feeling queasy and might have food poisoning. He is gagging and somewhat flushed. I hope we don't have to bring him to the hospital in Cotulla. Update: He is gagging in the parking lot. Thank goodness he is not riding in my truck. Our visit to El Charro was great! ..we didn't wait long for our entrees and it's a nice clean resturant. Plus side..they are open for breakfast! Nothing here was bad but a couple things fell slightly short. Being open on a Sunday is a definite plus. Service was excellent. The salsa, rice and beans were tasty, and fresh. The guacamole being homemade was dubious, and if it was, was underwhelming with that not quite natural green hue, and whipped texture. We ordered the parrilladas for two. No skimping on the shrimp, but they were a tad overcooked. The beef was under seasoned, but the chicken, and sausage were perfect. Fresh, homemade tortillas. Over all a very good experience.
