I had a great time! I was here today (3/19/22). I arrived around 7:40am, and there were a few people in line already. The instructors arrived at 8am. They took us inside the outdoor cement archery range, took roll call, and collected the $5 dollar fee. Everything went smoothly. They went over safety and protocol. The instructors are very welcoming and help you with any questions or concerns. In order to advance, you must take the safety class in the morning. I suggest you get there early to get a spot. There are only 15 spots, and it fills up fast. Overall, I highly recommend this place! P.S. There's an $8 dollar fee to get in the park (cash/credit).

Visible from Spring Street, I had seen this archery range numerous times but never really realized it was there until a friend and fellow Yelper, Brenna took us here for some archery practice. It had been nearly 20 years since I had held a bow and arrow, so I use the word 'practice' pretty loosely. Since I knew I wouldn't be any good, I was just here for the fun of it. There are about a dozen or so target butts (big bales of hay you put your target on). There is a decent amount of space between each of them, but given my lack of skill, I was still a little concerned with my aiming ability. Luckily there weren't a lot of people there and the ones who were had no problem with their aim. We saw some pretty hardcore people here with super professional equipment. They have competitions here on some Saturdays, but luckily for us, it was just target practice while we were there. The El Dorado Archers offer free (non-competition) Saturday morning classes (including use of their equipment; donations accepted). The minimum age is 8, so if you want your kids to learn how to shoot arrows at you, umm...I mean at hay, take them here! El Dorado Park vehicle entry fees are: $5 Monday through Friday; $7 Saturday and Sunday; and $8 on Holidays. The parking lot is pretty good sized and is right along the range, so you don't have to wander through the park to find it. Restrooms are close by, but they are your typical park restrooms, so bring some hand sanitizer with you. Oh yeah, regarding my aim...it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be! I even managed to hit the target a few times! Although not quite the middle of it!

Love this place! Very inexpensive to learn archery and the volunteers are SO helpful, kind, and patient. You must first take the safety class before you can start attending the beginning class, then you must shoot 180 twice before you can go to advanced. The equipment and practice range are very well maintained and everything is very safe. If you plan to come more than 8 times, just buy a season parking pass across the street from the nature center. The pass for the year is $60 while it's $7 to park each time.

This is in Long Beach, CA. The only negative is that they didn't have adequate or functioning restrooms.

The range is free but parking is not

    Can you shoot crossbows there?

No. Crossbows are wildly more powerful than most compound/recurve/stick bows. The danger of shooting over the fence and into someone's bounce house or BBQ would be too much.

I want to shoot at certain distance (30m, 50m), how do i go about doing measurement? is there any mark on the ground that tell you how far it is from target? or do you have to bring really long ruler on your own to measure?

A couple of ideas: The handicap access lane used to have marks for every 10m, but it was repaved, and I'm not sure if they've replaced the paint since repaving. Also, out in the big yard, there are unmarked anchors in the ground, which are set at… Read more

Paul is extremely patient and encouraging and is focused on teaching proper form and developing good habits, while making sure my son enjoys the sport and is meeting his personal goals. My son has improved dramatically, not only by gaining more technical skills, but also by gaining confidence in his abilities. South Bay Archery was also extremely generous and accommodating over the holidays, as our family was searching for a fun activity to do on New Year's eve with some friends. We booked a private party with Coach Paul and Coach Lani and everyone had a wonderful time! They made sure all 9 participants learned proper safety protocols, and taught our group how to shoot since some of us had no prior experience. They kept a good pace, explaining the challenges of shooting from further distances, and made things extra fun by creating a competition at the end, with the winner getting a prize! After that we relaxed and ate in the party room upstairs, which overlooked the shooting area. We all had a GREAT TIME! I encourage anyone looking for a fun group activity to check out South Bay Archery Lessons! I can't say enough about the kind, warm and engaging nature of both Coach Paul and Coach Lani, as well as the exceptional care and professionalism they put into all they do! Finally, years later in the present, a local archery club referred me to Coach Byron Burkhardt and Trident Archery as a great place to learn. For a 'father-daughter date', we signed up for their intro class and had a great experience! Coach Byron and Coach Hawk (aptly named!) walked us and a dozen others of all ages through the basics. I quickly realized there was more to archery than simply 'nock and shoot'. Afterwards, my daughter expressed enthusiasm for more, and we signed up for Trident's Beginning Class, composed of 4-sessions. Spreading these out weekly, we've been attending, learning and having fun! Coach Byron is passionate about the sport, and it shows in his interesting insights, stories and taking time to answer my novice questions. During a prior class, we even got to shoot at the goblin (Or was it an orc - perhaps an Uruk-hai learner)? Eat your heart out, Orlando Bloom! Our plan is to advance to the 18-meter class (Intermediate level) and eventually earn the right to get our own bows. We are very happy with Trident, and highly recommend it for everyone (It is an activity for all abilities - one of the greatest archers in the world shoots with his legs and feet - he has no arms)!

Located along the Eastern side of Mile Square Park, along Euclid St, the range is a beautiful outdoor setting, with the entire length of the shooting lanes covered with a nice, big steel structure. There are 20+ lanes, starting with 10 yd bales on one end, going out to 70-80 yds on the other end, in 10 yd increments. There are also lanes with no bales for archers who want to bring their own targets, stands, etc. It is a popular spot for shooters, and is especially busy on the weekends, so be prepared that you may have to wait for a lane, or share a lane with your group. (And seriously, if you are going to a public range with a group of 4-5 people, do you EACH need your own lane? Be kind and share!) The bales are all foam, and do get replaced periodically as the middles get shot out. The range is generally not monitored by Park Rangers, so it is up to the shooters to self-manage the range most of the time. Also note that the Parks Service runs group lessons most Saturday mornings, and when the lessons are running the Parks staff will call out the range commands. When the range is busy, and when Parks is running group lessons, the range will be slow. If you are a fast shooter, bring enough arrows so you don't shoot your 6 then wait 5 - 10 minutes for the rest of the range to finish the round. (Conversely, don't shoot 20-30 arrows if the entire range is waiting on YOU to finish a round.) There is a paid parking lot ($5) inside the park, right next to the west end of the range. Entrance is on Euclid, almost to Warner Ave. Or, you can park along Euclid for free, and just walk in to the range (~200 yards walk through the park.) There are park restrooms behind the range if you need. The range itself is free to use. Overall a beautiful place to shoot your bow(s), well maintained, and vast majority of archers there are good, friendly types.

Every time I'm in town, I carve out space for a lesson here. They don't just hand you a bow and send you to the range. They break it down--stance, breath, grip--without condescension or ego. From absolute zero, they had me loosing arrows with something resembling grace, and over time, they've built me into a halfway decent archer. That's not just instruction; that's craft. The gear side is no less impressive. Advice here isn't about upselling--it's about finding the bow, the arrows, the finger tabs that actually suit you. The staff talks from the heart, from decades of pulling strings and hitting targets, not from a sales script. And the vibe? Generous, patient, and real. You're not judged for being a beginner.
