After the intro class, they give you a card with your name on it that gives you access to two free open shooting sessions which happen on the weekends. After that rental is $5, which is such a good price considered you can be there for a few hours. They have multiple ranges but for open shooting you can use either the 10M or the 18M range. My kid asked for a bow and arrow set for his birthday. After it arrived, it occurred to me that we needed a place to try out this new activity. With a quick Yelp search, I found this FREE range in Cheviot Hills (about 10 minutes away). The archery range is in the center of the park, easy to find with Google maps. There are 3 sections - short, medium and long range. Although not busy, there were people in all the sections. At least the two times we've been, there's a door to enter but otherwise, it is not manned by personnel. I had read there is a safety check, etc but not with us. More like, use at your own risk. We followed the archery etiquette of our neighbors and so far, it's been sufficient and fun enough to continue coming back to over the summer. Give it a shot :) read more

Everyone get your butt over here and get your inner Katniss, Legolas, or Hawkeye on and grab the bow and shoot some arrows. Yay! I was so excited when the boy took me here for a date. It was absolutely amazing and such a different experience. The range is all volunteer run and completely open and FREE to the public. On Saturdays, they have training in the morning at around 11am. Classes fill up VERY quickly. By the time that we arrived, at 9am, we were the LAST set of students to be accepted into the introductory safey/beginners class. I would suggest arriving EARLY in the morning to grab a spot, fill out the forms, and come back later. (we went home to nap). The instructors are very thorough and ensure that you get the technique and form right. Most importantly, they emphasize safety which is very crucial. Each student gets paired up with an instructor and have a few minutes one-on-one time to shoot your arrows correctly. One you get your groove down, you're free to shoot a couple more times taking turns with other students. After your first class, you're free to come whenever there is open shooting. I would DEFINITELY recommend this and take it with a light heart. Go release some stress and see how your aim is. They do have a donation box, and knowing that all the staff there are on a volunteer basis, it would be great to leave a little something. Don't get lost and miss the turn onto the road leading to this location! Pay close attention especially as it's getting darker out because the street signs and "Archery Range" signs are easy to miss. This is place is one of LA's best kept secrets! Archery for FREEZY! And they teach you how too! The teachers here are all volunteers and the classes are every Saturday at 11:00 am and the second Sunday of every month at 1:30 pm. Don't worry, they even provide all the equipment you'll need for FREE! The classes aren't usually too full, but it's on a first come first served basis. After you've already taken a class, you can always come back to the range and shoot during Open Shooting Times Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm, Sundays from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm. For the more experienced shooters, there is another session on Weds from 6:30-8:00 pm, and yes, there is no rental fee. read more

I am not sure what possessed me to think that I can be an archer (must be the Nth time I watched LOTR drooling over young Orli-Bloom) I thought I'd give the sport a go. If I can't hit the target at first try, at least I looked COOL. So after researching several different indoor and outdoor archery ranges around LA, I stumbled up this gem in Rancho Park. Near where I live and FREE! My fellow accomplice and I somehow managed to get the last two spot for the day, the class is on a first come first serve basis and can fill up fast, and we are all bright eye, bushy tailed and ready to shoot something (ok, maybe not). We've been given a safety lecture first. Absolutely necessary, don't want to hunt down fellow archers by accident, before the fun part begins. All the equipments are FREE and the instructor measures you for the bow and arrows according to the length of your arms. They do a really good job correcting your forms and help you practice your aim. Once in a while they'll demonstrate their skills. Bull's-Eye. Respect. After your first orientation class, you're may go during their open shooting hours and borrow their equipment for FREE, or use your own gear. They do a speech at the end of the class to let you know that all the instructors are volunteers and to continue to make the classes free for the public and get everyone interested in archery, they will gladly take donations to keep this thing running. I have been here several times. I can't believe it's free to learn and they are always there on the weekends. It is donation based, but they don't force you to pay. If you can only give a $1, you can do that. They provide everything, but you must take a safety class. What an interesting and refreshing way to spend my Saturday morning. First things first: GET HERE AT LEAST 30 MINS EARLY FOR THE ARCHERY SAFETY / INTRO CLASS. There's only so many spots and people know to get there ahead of time - a few people got there just at 10:30 last weekend and were turned away. Ok, so I didn't know how beautiful Ranch Park is - green, varied and packed - the archery range was surrounded by athletics and dog show training the morning I went. Quite the boisterous January morning. The archery lesson itself: going through this one-hour safety and prep class and practicing with a handful of instructors allows you to come in whenever you like to shoot some bows n arrows in your downtime. The class is lengthy and everything is repeated ad nauseam, but safety does seem to be a priority of theirs - for good reason, too. I found the whole experience to be a thorough introduction to archery... then they cleared the range for us n00bs and we got to shoot a few rounds. Didn't end up leaving until after 1, which if you think about it ... means a lot of fun for FREE. read more

Super fun!! The hubby and I came here to enjoy some archery as first timers! And we had... an AMAZING TIME!! Now this program is run by volunteers, and is entirely FREE-- everything including safety gear and equipment is provided for you!!! Turns out this program was privately founded to educate the community on the art of archery! Now they function on donations only so please be generous, since donations are also used for the upkeep of the equipment.. Moving on, we came early on a Saturday morning (like at 7am) to pick up sign up forms for the first time mandatory introductory session. But since we live so close, we just turned around and went back to sleep until the class started. FYI I fully recommend you come early bc there are only a certain number of spots available for the first instructional session, and many got turned away when the class started. After the introductory safety class, you get a chance to try out the range for yourself, with staff watching you to provide direction and ensure safety of course. Now Ive never done this before, but it was crazy fun!! I felt sooo Hunger Games while getting my archery on.. I really had to chance to release my inner Katniss!!! Now as you can see in the attached pics, the first bullseye I fired was kinda sad.. barely sticking to the target, and eventually sagged down.. but by the end of the session, I was shooting bulls eyes no problemo with the help of staff of course!! Great range, equipment and instruction is provided free! Came here with a friend who lives close by. When you get to this park make sure you enter the correct entrance because there are multiple parking lots to this huge park (I re-parked my car after a long walk x_X) It's a small range compared with the range closer to my house in Pasadena, but it's well maintained and outdoors. The wall is very nice and made out of foam and the ground is very flat and even. What's cool about this range is that there are short curtain-like partitions running across the top of range to prevent stray arrows from flying up and possibly injuring someone on the adjacent golf course. Though it was a weekend, the class and range was not crowded! This is important so you get the necessary time for practice and not spend so much time waiting in line to get equipment. Classes and range times are a little later around early afternoon instead of early morning, which means I can sleep in. ;) Range safety is very important on this range, tell really drive it home that everyone is responsible for not only themselves others on the range. The commands issue for all clear and also to stop and retrieve the arrows are all verbal so it's key to pay attention. The instructors are worth their salt they would watch you draw a few times, and let you know how to improve. For example if you weren't consistently drawing to the same point or that your stance was off. The equipment is nice, bows have sights. Recommend this place to others but I secretly don't want to for the chance that this place would become crazy crowded. If I lived closer I would come here more often. read more

I was trying to suprise my husband, and take him to the Archery class for his birthday. But unfortunately once I got there, there was no class even though the page said so. I was looking everywhere for the class, and kindly a man told us that there was no Archery class today nor do they held the class in that park. It is being constructed. On the page, it said that newbies have to attend the morning class, Saturdays only in order to continue taking archery classes. I found out from a man at the park that they provide that class at San Fernando Valley which is a great distance from the address provided. I have been waiting to come after hearing about this place. The long renovation period is definitely worth the wait. We did the free Saturday morning class and it was so much fun. The first few times we try to sign up, the slots were all filled by the time we got to the range. We were told that people come around 9/9:30 to sign up for guaranteed spots. This time we came around 9/9:30 to sign up and we were signing waivers that were 19/20 already. So definitely come early and then after you sign up you can go grab coffee and breakfast before archery! After the safety class, which went over the basics and helped you figured out which eye you're dominate, we were given gears and practice our first round with volunteer trainers. It was so much fun! A few rounds in, they put balloons at bullseye and it just made it even more satisfying to make it! I thought we would only be able to shoot for an hour or so. To my surprise they didn't have a time limit at all! You can use the gears and range to your hearts content! They also gave each person a card so we can all come back to the range and borrow gears for free twice. I cannot recommend that place more. Such a great way to start the weekend! read more

On a quest to do something athletic and random for winter break, I found myself driving 40 miles to get to this gem. Located in the very back of a park, back being away from the main street not towards the golf course, is a small archery range. They have all of the equipment necessary in solid working condition. While the range is a little small, and offers very little variety, the reality is that there are very few places that most people can go to shoot arrows, and even fewer places that have the equipment and offer it all for free. They have experienced and friendly archers who are always present to help with everything. First timers are required to attend a safety and basics class which is offered on Saturday mornings. While the class is a little long and dragged out more than my ADD self could care for, it was very helpful and necessary. Most of the 11 students who shot today were shooting consistently by the end of the session. Good random thing to do and relax. Not at all fast paced. _____________________________________________ FREE Archery! Even including all the equipment! Hours: Sat 11am -1pm Mandatory class and shooting for first timers. This is the 2nd public archery range in LA I visited, and it is pretty fantastic! This place used to be pretty much a hidden gem in LA until "Hunger Games" came out and people got more interested in the sport. Now that "Brave" is coming out, I'm sure the place will be packed all summer. The range managers are super friendly and helpful - though it can be hard to reach them if you just call the number on the LA County website. Better to visit in person. They sometimes have events here, like a medieval fair thing where people dress up. I missed it last year and hope I get to go this year! They also have club activities. So, if you are part of the general public and want to shoot, find out their Open Shooting times and Safety Class times. Before you can shoot on your own here, you need to take their Safety Class. The class is free, though, so no need to worry about cost. Though, it is first come - first served. So, you do the math on that. Once you are at a place where you can shoot without having to take the class, it is a good idea to bring your own targets. All-in-all, a great place to hone your shooting skills. I am reserving the 5-star rating for the unveiling of this range's post-Olympic upgrade construction. (Hope they do it soon!) read more

This place is awesome. As the other 2 reviews said, it's all completely free, which is all to rare in LA. You're required to pass the safety/intro class before you can come back to shoot (every Saturday at 11am). I can't wait to go back on Sunday and pick up where I left off with the ever-so-helpful instructors showing me how to adjust my sight. Plus, finding out your dominant eye was pretty cool. Rancho Park Archery is finally open! Their grand opening was last weekend. It's open 7 days a week, 8:00am to 10:00pm. I went there today at 2pm, and it was completely empty, probably because people still think it's closed. The new range is beautiful, it's gonna be a lot of fun. My only complaint is there is nowhere to set your stuff down, like a purse, when you are shooting. A bench at each range would be nice. Thanks!! read more

I'm a little hesitant to write a review on this place only because I like it so much and I don't want it to get overcrowded. But hey when a place like this does such a good job and the volunteers are so committed, I feel like I should share the love. Basically this little archery range tucked in the back of Rancho Park has been here since the '84 Olympics serving the Westside. The cool thing about this place is that if you have your own equipment, you can practice here from morning to night, for free. Just show up and shoot. All they require is that you take their safety/ beginning class which is offered at 11:00am on Saturdays and every 2nd Sunday of each month. If you are here to take the class, note that they only take around 24 people so show up early. I got there about 10 minutes after 9am and there was only 3 slots left. So show up early, fill out the form, and go out for a walk in the park, or go get some breakfast and come back. The first hour of the class is where you'll learn the different parts of the bow, the techniques and form of shooting, determine your eye dominance and most importantly the safety rules of the range. After this you can expect to get all the equipment and begin the hands on instruction of shooting a bow and arrow. Today there were plenty of instructors which gave really good instruction and tips in a thorough and friendly manner. The equipment here is pretty good, and all the recurve bows that they use have sights. I started at 11 and did not leave until around 2:30, and that was only because I was getting hungry. Shooting was so fun that I had to force myself to leave. I remember getting my first instruction in archery here when I was a kid, and I can't believe that it has taken me so long to get back here and utilize this wonderful place. After doing a bit of archery while volunteering this summer, and being able to quote Robin Hood: Men In Tights front to back, I decided I had to add the sport to my Huck It List (the less morbid version of a bucket list that I totally didn't make up just now where the grim specter of my death doesn't hang a shadow all over the bloody thing). A friend looked up a few ranges and we decided one chill fall morning a few weeks ago to try this one out first, and good thing we did. We took the safety class which is offered at 11am on Saturdays, and a knowledgeable and funny instructor went over everything from stance to form to safety to technique. It was detailed without being bogged down in confusing terminology and really set us up for success at the range, which we were able to use after the safety course for a few hours. The range itself has, I believe, firing lines at 10, 20, 30, and 40 yards, and they have a few foam dinosaurs and other targets available but it seems we can bring our own without any issue. Ever shoot a Starbucks cup off the back of a stegosaurus? I have. And aside from making an enticing target for everyone at the range, I'm pretty sure I can come up with a political cartoon out of the whole arrangement. One of the best things about the range are the volunteers (they don't get paid, so I highly recommend you donate if you have the means) and the regulars. There's a bit of downtime while other people are finishing up their shots, and the folks there are more than happy to offer suggestions on your form and stance in a very friendly way. I've been there three times now (for the 9:30 Saturday morning range time) and their input has definitely helped me improve my shots. Parking can be difficult for the safety class (there's usually youth soccer going on which takes up a lot of spots) and the class itself has a size limit of 24 people, so make sure you don't get there late if you need to take the course. It's a good activity for kids, but if you bring yours please make sure they're careful about following the safety rules. Overall it's a nice range, and they're a great group of people who make it a fun place to learn a new activity. read more

Second time here and I'm definitely getting better. The volunteers are always happy to share their knowledge, as well as the more seasoned archers who come to practice. They have all the equipment you need to start shooting. Before you're able to come in to practice you must take the safety class which is only offered on Saturday morning. The class starts at 11am but you need to get your signup sheet early! I've heard of all spots being gone before 8am, but there are many who show up at 9 and there are still a few signup sheets left. Get to class early enough to find a parking spot because they will be full! It's all completely free, but they do accept donations. Every little bit keeps the place open and available to everyone. I think I've found my new hobby. ...I do wish there was more room to shoot though. The only reason I gave them four stars is because I have never been to another archery range and have nothing to compare to. Besides that, I had a GREAT experience. And I will go back. My background: I took Archery in college for a semester - don't ask me why - it might have been some subliminal Hindu thought. Saturday: I showed up at 11am for the orientation class. The range is behind the softball fields if you are coming from Motor. On my way, i happened to pass a bunch of dogs and owners doing a quite fancy make-shift obstacle course. You start class by signing a waiver - makes sense. Then there is about an hour or so of instruction from safety to how to shoot. I was sort of paying attention but it all seemed right on and not too boring - Kudos to Oliver, our instructor, who kept things moving. Then you do a walk through without an arrow. Another instructor watches you (individually) to make sure you are doing the basics right. Then you get an arm guard, finger cover, quiver, arrows and bow (recurve). Then you move into the range for some more safety instruction related to the range. and then you take some shots with another instructor helping you out. Everything ends around 1pm - so it is about a two hour commitment. Some more thoughts: 1. The place was clean and safe. 2. All the instructors (Marianno, Oliver, Alex, Alejandro, Reema and one other guy) were great - not condescending at all - just very helpful 3. The instructors were all volunteers so you have to give them props for doing this. 4. It's free- they make their ask at the end - but it is quick and they don't walk by with a tin can or anything. And that's it - you can come back during "open" hours - Sat 9:30-12noon and Sun 12noon - 2pm to shoot. If you have your own equipment, you can go whenever Rancho is open. And Alejandro did give us the opportunity to do a "300" shot where he counted 1-2-3 and all of us unleashed on the "Persians" at the same time. Somehow I felt more Kevin Costner then 300. read more

I have pictures... but they mostly consist of my little sister posing with her bow and a stern look on her face. Or the ones of her when she found the tennis ball and entertained herself with it for twenty minutes. I mean, I guess I can post those, but I'd rather just write about it. I really don't like writing things that have already been said, though. What's the point? You know that the equipment is free to use, and that they have lessons every Saturday at 11am. But what you don't know, what they don't want to tell you, is that Magneto practices archery here. Or used to, at least... Either way, I'm not so sure I want to frequent an archery range that allows super villains access to their facilities. The photographic evidence is out there, my friends. Other than that, I mean, my sister and my boyfriend really enjoyed themselves. I enjoyed watching from a safe distance as I'm afraid to be in control of anything that moves at a speed faster than I do (i.e. cars, bikes, in this case arrows)... but it was worth it to watch them have so much fun. Oh, and there was coffee and cookies out for the people attending the lesson. That's very generous of a group of volunteers who are not getting paid for their time, and who are running a free archery program. So yeah, you should definitely go. And don't forget to throw them a couple dollars in their donation can, because there are far too few cool places like this in LA, and we need to support them... Think of Magneto. read more

When they say this is the best archery range in Los Angeles, they are probably right. Enter on Motor Ave, all the way down into an easy parking lot. Lots of kids running around and there's a Bocce court for the older folks on a Saturday morning. This is where you'll start if you decide to come for the free beginner's archery lesson and safety course. For those wanting a good primer on archery, this would be it. Show up before 11am and one of the instructors will guide you through all the various equipment, range rules, and the basic techniques of firing a bow and arrow. You'll find out if you are right or left eye dominant (it doesn't always depend on your dominant hand, always). The talking part will last around an hour. Be patient, pay attention, and you shall be rewarded afterward with actual practice range just for the safety class after they boot out all the free practice archers. After you've taken the safety course, you are free to come back Saturday mornings from 9:30am - 12pm, and Sundays from 12pm - 3pm. Still free! The range stays in operation through donations and all the various teachers that maintain the facility. Personally, I've been to various ranges in and out of California, and the equipment that Rancho Park Archery is one of the best. Clean, well maintained, from beginner to intermediate bows, and even have sights on most of them. The atmosphere at the range is very welcoming and friendly. Mostly everyone is respectful and everyone has time to shoot. There is no rush, pressure, or competition on the free practices on the weekends. From young to old, from beginners to those of advanced skill levels, there is a great mix of energy and laid back spirit that makes it really fun and inviting atmosphere. The instructors are friendly and will gladly help you with any general questions about anything, technique, or form. This is one of the few teaching ranges left in the country, so it makes it the best place to learn if you don't know where to start. Or perhaps you may be looking for a range to shoot at if you are new or unfamiliar with the area. And besides the regular open shoots on weekends, there are more advanced level shoots during the weekdays (if you have your own equipment), and they share the space with other groups. Nanka Kyudo Kai (Japanese Archery club from Pasadena) practices early Sunday mornings and you can actually watch them elegantly practice if you wish. There is also a renaissance type archer group that meets there. Either way, if archery is anything of interest to you, definitely check it out! read more

My BF and I were super excited and got there an hour early for the free archery class and safety lesson- got turned down bc it was completely full!! Not only was it completely full, but someone that lined up at 7:30am... yes I said 7:30AM said he got turned away the last time because he was TOO LATE!! I mean that is just crazy... for an 11am class????? I guess one Saturday morning we will just bite the bullet and show up at the park at 6am... and yes I understand it is free which is great... but that seems a little cray. Just my 2 cents. I REALLY love this place. The staff is so committed and helpful. They range from gruff and cranky to accomodating and supportive and all are thoroughly into archery as a sport for life. Gruff comes from driving home the importance of safety / Supportive comes from making sure that every archer has the best possible experience. The staff is DYNAMITE and I love'em all! I've been in and out of archery all my life (I earned archery merit badge at Scout Camp back in the '70s) but their detailed instruction was superb - as a result I am a better archer now than I ever was as a kid. Speaking of kids, my 10-year-old daughter LOVES this also. She's getting into combat sports, like fencing, so archery is a no brainer. So we did the free instruction at 11:00am last Saturday we will be back for free archery next weekend. This makes for great father-daughter activities, we call it Dadurday. Junior-High Boys: BEWARE! I just took the free archery class and was very impressed. I arrived at 7:45am to sign up for the 11am Saturday class and there was already a group of people waiting, so make sure you arrive early! Classes are limited to 24, so they fill up fast. Once you sign up, you can leave to have breakfast, do something else in the park, etc. The instructors were very friendly and thorough. I felt that I learned a lot and I'm already looking forward to returning for practice shooting. While the classes are free, do try to bring a little cash for donation; the instructors are volunteers and the money goes towards equipment (which they never charge for). People complain about waiting in line too long on Saturdays. Figures, only Americans would be complaining about free stuff. They forget that the second sunday of every month, class is at 1:30. I got there around 11 AM and easily got a spot. That is probably the best way to do it. read more

This place is awesome! It's a former Olympics training facility and specifically made to provide people with a place to learn archery! We took the safety class at 11am on Saturdays (free! They do ask for donations). I recommend going early, as there are limited spots. We got there at about 10 am! You can also go back during open shooting times for free! I love this place! read more
