In December 2023, I received a bill for $172.00 for a nebulizer I did not use and subsequently returned to the hospital's Durable Medical Equipment department on January 2024. I have a receipt confirming the return. I offered to pay for the unit as a rental since I had not used it, and returned the unit in new order. Despite confirming with my insurance company that no payment was made towards the nebulizer, I was informed by the billing department (representative: Tonya) that I was responsible for the remaining balance. I escalated the issue to the director, Amy, who left a voicemail stating the opposite. Amy said that despite me returning the unit, that my insurance had paid for it, so I needed to pick it up. I returned the item, why in the world would I pay for it? You don't purchase and item at a store, return it but not receive a refund. Simply idiotic. I confirmed with my insurance that ZERO dollars were paid to Susan B Allen Hospital. Amy is combative in her tone and her lack of desire to resolve this issue peacefully and professionally is quite concerning. I believe there is an error in the billing regarding this returned nebulizer. I have contacted the hospital directly to resolve this issue but have not received a satisfactory response. My next steps are to file a complaint with the Kansas Department of Health and Human Services, The BBB and other healthcare advocates to resolve this issue.

Dr. Sellberg ran no tests, told us we were textbook car wreck victims. We would heal in time. Asked about our car and said good thing we were in a Toyota. Two days later after not feeling any better, we went to the Wesley ER in Andover and had CT scans, x-rays, an ultrasound on my swollen leg to check for blood clots. Turns out, I have 6 fractured ribs, 2 compressed vertebrae and need a breathing device to avoid pneumonia. Sure glad we decided to get a second opinion. At Wesley ER at 13th and Tyler, here in Wichita, I experienced nothing but sincere concern, kindness, compassion and a true dedication to the profession of either nurses, PA, or doctors! They made me feel comfortable, took my concerns seriously, and never once dismissed my pain. Special thanks to Gladys, Lacy, Dr. Paxon, and Haley, my care team that day. You were compassionate, thorough, and incredibly professional. You ran every test necessary and ultimately diagnosed me with acute appendicitis, quickly arranging for me to be transferred to Wesley for surgery. If I missed someone that was involved that day, I appreciate you as well! What I didn't realize at the time was just how life-saving that visit would be. During my appendectomy, a tiny cancerous tumor was found in my appendix, so small it never would've shown up on imaging. Because I'm over 40 (and appendicitis is less common at my age), that finding led my doctors to do further screenings. They found and removed a precancerous polyp, and I later had another preventative surgery for something else -- but never would've been addressed if it wasn't for my care on February 20, 2025. The proactive, attentive care I received at Derby ER set everything in motion. You very likely saved my life. I will forever be grateful for you. I was seen quickly. The RN Dafne was superb, taking care of me right away, checking in often. The nurse practitioner Chris was so caring, diagnosed me immediately and confirmed the diagnosis with one additional test. I was given a prescription and sent home. This took less than 2 hours. I was nervous at first, but the care was awesome. Thank goodness Lebette Health has come to town and taken over the spot left empty when Mercy Hospital closed in 2015. Well done!!
