The food here was a bit overpriced and seemed like regular California prices. $20 for a plate of nachos and three tacos were 20 bucks as well. We should have turned away when the waiter hurried us in and was too persistent. While the food looked good there was a horrible smell of dead fish so we only ordered chips and drinks to be nice. That was our second mistake because the bill came out to almost $90 and we only had a drink each and two baskets of chips. When I paid I make the final mistake of giving the waiter my CC. I saw him swipe it on a device he put back in his pocket and then run my card through another device at the register. Luckily, my strip can't be copied due to the type of card. I made sure to have cash ready for the rest of the trip. There are far better places only a few steps away. read more

If I could give this place a zero, I would. "Open bar" is a lie...they only give you corona beer and they have 6 or 7 different beers in the bar. The pina coladas, margaritas and rum runners are made with the cheapest alcohol you can buy. I would not go to this establishment for free...they charged us $35 each for "open bar" and $15 for non drinkers. Non drinkers aren't happy either...ask for a water...not cold and a tiny bottle. I have no idea why this place has so many negative reviews. We went here in March 2024 and had an amazing lunch. The view and the location is exceptional. Our server, Bronco, was friendly, courteous, and provided outstanding service. The prices were not really high considering the amazing view and having the comfort of being so close to the ship and the safety of being in the touristy area. The chicken and beef tacos were flavorful, the tortillas were incredible and the salsa was fresh and tasted amazing. Everything was fresh and delicious. The skewers were also very good. The piña coladas were very good and actually priced OK and they packed a little punch afterwards. And no, they did not try to screw us with the bill. As soon as we parked the car , we were approached by 2 guys showing us menus and pictures and offering beach front seating. We were there to eat and the guys were so insistent that we fell for it and followed them to the restaurant without looking for other options. In hindsight that might have been a mistake. Don't get me wrong, the location on the beach is great and does not get any better than beach front seating , but the prices and the food could have been better. We tried the lobster tacos and the grilled octopus , which sounded much better than what they actually were. Decent but not mind blowing. We asked for smoothies , which are not on the menu but they said could be made to order. BIG Mistake, they were pretty much ice blended with syrup (think fake pina colada or daiquiri syrup) and they were priced as the same price as a a regular pina colada. No bueno! We were also surprised when the bill came and there was an extra charge for "food preparation". We did have a good time there, but i think there are many better options with the same beach front views and possibly better food. read more

Great little beach front restaurant/club. Close to the "famed" el tropicante. 8$ taxi ride from the ship. They had plenty of good seats available so we said why not? Got a sub par Pina colada for the wife 12$ or so, and a bucket of 10 coronitas for $25. They water is nice and they fence it off to keep out the notorious mahahual sea grass, makes it very kid friendly. You will encounter plenty of vendors, they are not pushy, but very motivated if you show interest. If you don't plan to buy or don't want to just say no thank you. They're just trying to make a living to survive and provide for their family. Don't be a jerk and try to get them down to crumbs for their products, unless you feel like their trying to rip you off. Plenty of kid vendors selling small paper mache bobble head animals and flowers made by hand from palm. Great place to chill and kick back. read more

El Faro's oceanfront location at the fake Puerto Costa Maya pier is what drew in me and my spouse before heading back to the cruise ship. After getting used to the dirt cheap prices of Puerto Vallarta, I for one was taken aback with what these guys were asking. ATMOSPHERE: You can't get any closer to the ocean than this! It's so close you'll be covered with sea spray. The place is totally outdoors with protection via umbrellas. There are more covered tables further from the ocean fronting the restaurant but they're along a busy sidewalk and were mistaken for public use by some folks. Country music was played overhead. MENU: Beer, mixed drinks, burgers, skewers, steak, chicken, shrimp, ceviche. Food prices ranged from $15 - $20, alcohol prices between $4 and $14. Pricey compared to other parts of Mexico. We almost ordered a plate of shrimp but decided to just have some beers while enjoying the sensory experiences of the ocean. SERVICE: Our server was welcoming and friendly. En route back to the cruise ship, we saw this taco place by the water so we decided to give it a try. They had a live saxophone player, breezy ocean view, and friendly staff. The beef tacos were tasty but the shrimp and guac were just decent. The prices for this establishment is on the higher end. For reference, $24 for 3 shrimp tacos. The reason for the reduction of stars is how the servers conduct business. They act friendly and at the end, they will ask you to pay more than what's on the bill. For example, the bill came out to be $52. The waiter asked for $69 because he "forgot" to add the guacamole to the bill, even though the bill reads Chips and Salsa. I'm pretty sure you can go back and redo your bill but he didn't which means, he's planning to skim his employer and scam a patron. Personally, I would not pay the added cost they pulled out of thin air. But my friend, a first time traveler didn't want a confrontation. He was also paying for it so I chilled out. The reason we are giving them only 2 Stars is because of getting double charged on our credit card and are having a difficult time getting this issue resolved. So first time to Costa Maya and we asked onboard our ship best place to go. They said go to the beach in Mahahual. So once we made it through the maze of a Port Terminal we got an open bus to the beach. Unfortunately a man onboard took a group of us to El Faro. He said reasonable prices free chairs and entrance. So once we arrived we picked out two lounge chairs near the water. Next a waiter came over and took our drink order. Since we are in Mexico we drank Mexican beer Corona Lights. As the day went on they also has massages on the beach we were quoted $35. per person for an hour. Since hubby wanted a couple's massage anyway we said why not. After the massages I was hungry but leery to eat here. Thought bean dip would be a safe choice. Well after asking several servers they finally brought us a small bowl with black beans pureed cold with a couple of flecks of white mexican cheese. This came with fried tortilla chips $4.. Saying it was awful would be too kind. The best thing about this was I didn't get sick. When we went to settle up we got charged $8. per beer. So it was $191. beach day. We tipped ladies for the massages separately. Next time we will skip Costa Maya what a rip off. Don't need a shake down for money on holiday. Don't even try to go here if you are on a cruise ship! My wife and I had been here 3 times before, but this time they chose to charge us 4x what they had charged us in the past. They charged us $8 for a Pacifico beer, $18 for an average margarita. When we were here in December it was $8 for a Margarita & $4 for a beer, you can see by the pictures I have attached the difference they charge between locals and cruise ship people. They also told us things were in the house, then charged us for them. Conversion rate is 20-1. Sadly we will not be returning here. Went to Costa Maya on a cruise a couple of days ago... this was the first restaurant I saw, so I decided to stop here and eat. View wise, absolutely stunning! You are seated right next to the beautiful ocean and you get a view of all the cruises, so it's a wonderful place to take pictures. The food is why I'm giving this restaurant a three star review. It was merely average. I am of Mexican heritage and so I believe I am qualified enough to say that I know real authentic Mexican food, and this just didn't taste like it. There really wasn't much to choose from so I didn't enjoy it that much. I ordered a mixed skewer that came with grilled steak, chicken, and shrimp... it was just okay. We came in on a cruise to Costa Maya. We decided to leave port and go to the boardwalk in Mahahual. We jumped on the shuttle for $8 and wEnt into this cute little town. Edwin met us at the shuttle stop and escorted us to his beachfront restaurant. He took great care of us and got us set up in a couple of chairs with a table for our bucket of beers. We had chicken nachos and they were delicious! We stayed all day and never wanted to go a thing. All of the waitstaff was very friendly. The beach was beautiful and very clean. They also have a restroom in their restaurant you can use-very clean! All in all it was a great day and I will definitely be going back to El Faro if I ever get the chance read more
