I Mexican food. I have been to hundreds of Mexican restaurants and love how they are all just a little different. I have never been to a Mexican restaurant that I wouldn't visit again, until today. This place was just nasty. The food was horrid. The steak was as dry as the sole of a shoe. When I chewed it and spit it out, it looked just like the chicken in the chicken taco. The chicken taco was terrible which was prepared with some red sauce, to hide the funk. It's shredded leftover chicken. Took forever and we were the only ones in the restaurant. I have never had bad beans at a Mexican restaurant, because I appreciate how the Mexican culture takes pride in their beans. This place was the only exception ever. Leftover garbage. Terrible. I was really hoping for a better experience than previous reviews but, unfortunately the food was fair. Not amazing but not bad. I do agree that it wasn't super seasoned but that actually works in my favor because I'm on a strict low sodium diet because of my heart so that works for me. I did have one minor complaint. I came in and ordered my food and sat and waited and other customers also came in and ordered their food. I literally sat while everyone else was called to pick up their food and I wasn't. El Gallo has been my go-to Mexican restaurant for many years. This evening my daughter picked up a burrito and tacos and the burrito was one-third the size it use to be. I understand that costs of ingredients have gone up with inflation, but this is ridiculous. The value is not worth the cost. Went here to day and never ever again, first of all it's a 99* day and hot af in there, red flag, second black tape on all the menu prices and when i ask the worker she didn't even know the prices, so we order steak tacos n gorditas, not flavor no salt, green salsa on gorditas very sour no flavor at all. Dark dingy bathroom, they give you no napkins i had to ask, also had to ask for utensils, oh and the Gordita was fried, crunchy and hard. So we pay and leave and i grab a menu on the way out and see i was charged different prices for the gorditas, and $1.00 for chips and tiny salsa, and 1.00 each extra for the smallest avacado slice and tiny amount of sour cream making my bill $8 more. This is the garbage they added cilantro and onion along with old lettuce and sour cream it tasted sour and the beans tasted sour as well. We used to go to this place all the time for 8 years but then the burrito prices skyrocketed and the size cut in half. We haven't been back for the last 2 years but I really wanted to give them another shot and I'm so glad I did. I ordered the steak burrito for hubby just to see how the size comparison is so we will see tonight when he gets home. However I got the 2 taco dinner. 1 carnitas and 1 steak. Both in hard taco shell with lettuce, tomato and cheese. It comes with rice (which I have been craving for) and beans. I added the green sauce to to carnitas taco and also with sour cream. So I got a hard shell taco with carnitas, lettuce, cheese, tomato, green sauce and sour cream. And let me just say it was so darn good! I took the first bite and it was salty but not too salty. So flavorful. Burst with flavor. I had to do a double take like damn, which one is this? Carnitas? I should have gotten 2 because the steak cannot beat this and I will be disappointed. Nope. The steak was just as good. Seasoned nicely so it is salty but so good. There were ppl eating there and I had to peek at their food and that looks great too. Everything was very delicious. I think we will start going back again. Just keep in mind it is a bit expensive than most. Maybe because their burrito went from $4.95 to $6.50 but size gotten smaller tho. I don't mind paying $6.50 so hopefully the burrito tonight will be a decent size. That's why I can only give it a 4 star. Maybe I'll change my mind next time to a 5 if the flavor is consistent. One of the worst Mexican restaurants I've been too! They are very overpriced for food that isn't the best quality wouldn't recommend this place. The first incident seems sketchy but you can decide that so I went there on a wednesday night and order a 1 steak burrito.THATS IT. I gave the cashier(older women) a $10 bill and she only gave me back some coins ONLY, I thought it was odd because the menu says 6.29 for a steak burrito so I asked the cashier for my receipt and she printed one out but ripped the bottom part of it so didn't show a price just that I order a burrito. Not to mention that the steak was really fatty/chewy, every other bite I had to spit out cuz it was all fat. Save your money and go somewhere else to get better Mexican food. read more

I just tried this resturant on Saturday. Its like 2 mins from my bf's and I thought "what the hell" We have been steadially getting Super Burrito (on Ridgeland) nearly every Saturday for 2 months, and recently we decided we had to try something else. What can I say? Its a standard Mexican fast food place. If you are going to places like this to get 5 star gormet Mexican, then you gotta really take a look at yourself. Instead, here youll get pretty decent tacos (my bf had the chicken taco dinner and swore that he liked the chicken 10x better then some other places weve had), tortas (I had the steak torta) , burritos etc. My only complaint and its a very minor one, was that I perfer other places rice a bit better. Other then that, we got a lot of food for under $22 bucks, and both had enough left over to eat later in the night after we had some drinks :) Things to be ware of...I wouldnt go there after midnight unless you are coming from a bar, because those are the type of people that are going to be in there (and really what are you doing getting Mexican at that time if your NOT coming from a bar haha). Watch out for the parking lot, tons of pot holes. Definatly pay the 50cents for the carrots jalapenos and cauliflower mix. read more

I lived at this place for the last 10 years of my life. The problem is that recently they seem to have changed their recipe on me. Trust me on this, I know what this place should taste like by now. Amazing chips and salsa. They give you a free basket of chips when you sit down and 2 different salsas. One is sort of a pico de gallo while the other is more of a blended salsa. Both are great in flavor and can pack a punch if you get a pepper. I've actually had my eyes water a few times if I get a spicy batch. I love it. My usual routine was 3 chicken tacos. The chicken was always orange in flavor (assuming from a marinade of some sort) and the tortillas had a great flavor. Last time I went, the chicken was more white and lacked in flavor and the tortillas were yellow and not the usual white. I would like to think I went on an off day but I've literally eaten here so many times that I was led to believe that they changed the recipe on me. My brother, also a frequest visitor, felt the same. That being said, I will probably give this place one last chance to redeem itself before officially closing the door. My very first experience here was a disappointment, but they've gotten my order right every time since. The food is good, but I mainly like the place because their hours fit my schedule. I've been coming here for over 12 years and I'll keep coming back. I now live over 25 miles away but I still make the occasional trip back. However, while I personally am a big fan of the food I'm not sure how much of my love for this place is for nostalgic reasons. The free salsa (pico de gallo) you get when dining in is by far my favorite salsa I've ever had. I do not leave this place without an order of chips and salsa to go. Sometimes it's more spicy than others but it's always amazing. I also order chicken tacos with only cheese (seriously the only order I've ever placed) so I can't speak to their other meats but I love their chicken. It's always so flavorful and juicy. Also weirdly their fries are really good (my friend loves to order them). The reason I can't give this 5 stars is because the cleanliness is a little questionable but I try to overlook that because I need their chicken tacos and salsa. When I moved here from my little town, I looked for a place I could get a good steak taco. El Gallo did not disappoint. The cafe is nothing special - just some booths and a few rooster decorations on the walls - but who goes there for the ambiance? Not me. I go there for the tacos, burritos, tostadas and chimichangas. Unfortunately I am done with this restaurant. I think they must've changed owners recently. For the past few months, our take away orders always have some hiccup. The most recent cost them our business. My order was wrong, when I called to tell them, the lady said to come back to get the correct order. Unfortunately I couldn't, as I was about to go to work. She replied well can't you just drive back? I said it's in the complete opposite direction, can I just get a credit. She responded no that they couldn't possibly do that. OK fine so I ordered two pork tacos and a small refried beans with water. There was no menu at the table and she never notified me that they only serve large bean orders for about $3.80 a piece. A large bean order equals about 10 teaspoons of beans. The bill came out to about $8.50. That's right two tacos with very little meat and 10 teaspoons of beans plus a water equalled $8.50. You've got to be kidding me. What a rip off. I told her she should've told me they don't serve small bean orders. I would've never paid $3.50 for so little. What a waste of money plus the service was right out of a horror movie. It would've been less painful if I just walked in and she kicked me in the balls then I turned around and left. This place has absolutely the worst service I've seen. Workers are seen not wearing masks nor gloves while handling food. They get orders wrong and when you confront them they try to argue that you didn't pay. We had proof on the receipt that our order was wrong but they accused us of lying that we already got our food. LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!! Never mind the food, I come here for the Saturday night fights. When the four o'clock bar next door closes, all the inebriates flood in here for food and to start fighting. Never mind the fact that there are five police squads out front of the place ready to take you away to your own little piece of heaven in the drunk tank. But all kidding aside, this is a great little place for some authentic Mexican food. The guacamole there is outstanding, as well as the salsa. The prices are very low, and it makes a great late night pit stop alternative.
