When I drove past the bright beautiful image on the sign caught my eye, Then I realized that the old Steak N Shake building was looking bright and new and the parking lot was full on a Wednesday night. I came home and searched this new place, Thursday at 11 a.m. we were there having lunch! The decor is bright and festive and the restaurant is very clean. The chips Salsa and bean dip were flavorful and delicious. I ordered the $5 lunch special margarita, frozen with Tajin. I am not sure if it was because we were there so early in the day, but the margarita did not seem quite frozen. Our food came out quick and was delivered hot and just as ordered. I had the chicken Flautas. They had a good flavor, but I would have liked them better if the chicken was more of a shredded, salsa chicken, instead it appeared to be grilled chicken cut into chunks, and some times the all the filling came out at once. My husband was not thrilled with his chimi. He said that it has too much rice in it and that the steak did not seem to have much seasoning, he did really like the queso that was served over his chimi. My wife and I ate dinner here last night. It is in the old Steak 'n Shake building. The service is outstanding, the food geniune Mexican, so consider yourself warned. This is not your average TexMex restaurant. The sauces are all homemade, and everything down to the tortillas is made from scratch. It is very tasty, with great service and reasonable prices. Priced similarly to good mexican restaurants in the area, however, dishes are very cheaply made (i.e. very poor value). Got the giant burrito with steak strips....$14.45 for a tortilla stuffed with rice, beans, peppers onions and three very small pieces of "steak" (tough monkey meat)....WHERE'S THE BEEF? Also, "background" music was so loud, we had a difficult time having conversation. Will not go back. read more

First time here. The salsa was watery and the chips were oily. My wife ordered a cheese cassidia and it came with pork in it. I had the carnitas dinner and the pork was very tender but bland. The rice and refried beans were okay. The server was polite but struggled with taking orders. Realizing this is a new restaurant, we will try them again in the future. read more

The food was wonderful and service was amazing. Chips are thin and fresh. Spicy salsa was thick, smoky and delicious. Birria tacos were flavorful, crispy, cheesy, and accompanied by savory consommé. Chorizo and al pastor street tacos were well seasoned and served with a crisp green salsa. The green sauce on the enchiladas verdes has a hint of citrus. This place was so good and the service was amazing! Loved the ambiance and cleanliness of the place too. They have a spicier salsa in the back that is so good! Love that they bring a bean dip out with your regular salsa too our waitress was the sister of the owner (I think the owner of not the chef then) and she was very kind and very attentive to us. My husband and I shared the bipolar fajitas and had a couple of margaritas. Everything was delicious and we will definitely be coming back and taking our friends and family here. We enjoyed the tortilla chips. The salsa has no flavor. The chorizo queso dip was water. Rice was mushy and didn't seem safe to eat from the looks of it. Birria tacos had no flavor and the birria consome was just oil with No flavor! What on earth! Didn't come with a lime or cilantro or hot sauce... The chimi was filled with mushy rice. We ate half of our meal and dipped out. I'll never return. I'll keep my business to the authentic taco truck up the street. This place is trying to say they are authentic. Nonsense! I'll start with the positives: extremely friendly staff, very clean facility, bright welcoming dining room to sit many parties. Margaritas tasted like sweet and sour mix with lime, very watery and not good. Chips were oily and the salsa was pretty flavorless. I'm not really sure what the rice is, definitely not like anything I've had at any other Mexican restaurant, and I don't mean that in a positive way. Beans were runny and thin. Quesadilla was made with cheddar, not Mexican cheese. The queso, though runny and thin, was good. We basically left the majority of the food untouched on the table. One person ordered birra tacos and said they were decent. As sweet as the staff is, we will not return. $75 for tasteless drinks and subpar food that was essentially untouched. Will stick with El Mezon, La Caretta, El Tio Pepe, etc. read more

The atmosphere and service here were fairly good but the margaritas were awful. The enchiladas mole were good but the cheese on the chicken enchiladas tasted like it was made from velveeta cheese and rotel canned tomatoes. The salsa was heavy with cilantro. First thing, the Mexican restaurant idea can repurpose any building, they are good at the Pizza Hut repurpose, I live in St Peters and a Mexican repurposed a Hardee's, in Wentzville, there is an old gas station repurposed into a Mexican with the overhangs for the fuel pumps (but no fuel pumps) still there. On to El Guatal, this one is a repurposed Steak n Shake. The exterior you can kind of tell that it was a Steak n Shake, but the interior is totally redone to give you the rustic Mexican fair. They did put a patio out front, which is a nice addition. The one let down is that the maintenance on the land scaping could be better, weeds and grass growing where it shouldn't be. The food is incredible, I read that someone said that the salsa tasted like watery tomato paste, the salsa I had was very tasty and not really watery, they also have a bean dip that is very tasty. The chips are made fresh and are very light and tasty. I usually get Carnitas or Carne Asada. I have had them both and both are fresh and tasty. It was also said by another reviewer that it is loud and hard to hear others, It is rather loud in there, but Mexican restaurants are always festive, so that is not a negative to me. The pricing is fair, it is around the same as your other local Mexicans. I would highly recommend this establishment. read more
