Visiting my parents, they really wanted Mexican and this was their top choice. Typical menu for Mexican food- enchiladas, burritos, tacos, etc. My Dad ordered a combo with a variety of meat items. I don't eat meat so I did not sample but he loved it. He just doesn't eat a lot of food these days but he ate almost all of his dishes so it must have been good. My mother enjoyed her enchilada as well. My meal was so so. I ordered the vegetarian fajitas. The veggies were over cooked and all looked the same dull color with little seasoning. most disappointing was that they brought me flour tortillas with the meal. I asked the server delivering the food to exchange for corn. I think he took my packet into kitchen and brought it back out. I opened it and asked if they were really corn. He assured me they were just white corn. I call BS- corn and flour have distinct textures. These were flour. Not sure why he lied to me. But after that I did not trust that the beans or rice were vegetarian so basically I had a pile of overcooked veggies. would I go back again? If just me, no. but it made my parents really happy so if they wanted to I would in a heartbeat. read more

First off, service was fantastic. Quick to be seated and way too quick for my meal to be served. I didn't even get a chance to read a chapter in my book. Awesome service and quite friendly. Let me start with the Mexican rice with queso. Very delicious. Excellent flavor and just the right amount of queso. Quite a significant serving size too. The tacos were good. One carnitas and one Al pastor. The carnitas was good. I usually like a bit more char on my carnitas than they had here. I think this is why they seemed a bit oily. The Al pastor had a unique texture. However, they were very flavorful. I do not think the shells were homemade, but there were two shells, which is a must for me. I have had their fajitas before, so I will review them next time, as I remember them to be amazing. The restaurant was quite busy for a Monday night. It seems like there are a lot of locals who enjoy eating here. Very family friendly. The set up does get a little noisy, but not loud. I overheard someone say a surprise party of 30 was arriving and the crew seemed to manage it without getting stressed. read more

Everything was awful, inedible in some cases, gluggy, greasy, cold and salty. My husband and I shared a sampler plate so got a taste of several dishes. The chili relleno was the worst. It appeared to have been twice fried and chili under the breading was black. The refried beans were ocean-level salty as was thesalsa. The mild salsa was just red tomato sauce and the "spicy" salsa tasted like dust. The chips were fine. We sent our food back. A reliable restaurant which in my book is so valuable. The food is solid. My chicken fajita dish was massive. Of course I ate too much as usual, but I still went home with leftovers for a second meal. My son's kids cheese quesadilla meal was also great but instead of a ton of rice and beans I'd say it would be better with a second piece of quesadilla. Also consumed at our table was a chimichanga and fajita burrito bowls - all rave reviews. Service was a tad slower than normal my parents said but still was within a reasonable amount of time. This place serves up solid, authentic Mexican dishes for affordable prices (including complimentary chips and salsa). But....the overall meal was lacking in flavor and spice. Both of our dishes were bland. Waiter was fast and efficient but, didn't come back to check on our meals until we were done. Would have been nice to have had some hot sauce or jalapenos to spice things up. We were seated immediately. Parking lot is small so be prepared to park over in adjacent lots and walk over. YUM AND SO FAST! The drinks & salsa came out in 1 minute. We ordered our entrees and the food came out in literally 8 minutes - even with a pretty full restaurant. I have never had faster more attentive service. The staff is so nice and funny. The decorations and music makes it a really fun quick lunch spot but would also be great for dinner. My daughters and I stopped in for a late lunch. We were seated right away and served quickly. I asked if we could have a refill on the salsa and the waiter said no! One per table. Then took our salsa bowl and tossed it into a tub.. it wasn't completely empty. I apologized to my daughters, because now they had no salsa to finish the chips. I'm guessing he was kidding because he did return with more salsa. I ordered enchiladas. It was basically cooked ground hamburger rolled into a corn tortilla, covered in enchilada sauce and microwaved. I couldn't eat it! When we were finished, my daughter had a lot left on her plate, so the waiter took her fork scooped up some of her food and tried to shove it in her mouth. Saying you can take one more bite. Now that we live in Rapids, we've patronized El Mezcal quite a bit. (At the time of my original review, we regularly visited family who lived in town.) The quality of service has declined significantly in the last few years -- we often have to wait quite a while to get chips, give our order, and get drink refills even when the restaurant is slow. That never used to be the case. The quality of food isn't as good as it used to be, either; we haven't been back in a few months because the food was over-cooked on our last visit. The chicken in my husband's quesadilla was so dry it was almost inedible. I've gone a few times without him to meet friends/family for lunch and it has been okay, but not great. There are better Mexican options in town and those are the places we patronize for our dinner dates. read more

After many days of sitting around the campfire, I felt the need to get out and about. I convinced my BF to go on an adventure and we ended up in Wisconsin Rapids. We needed lunch and he had fond memories of El Mezcal from a previous trip years ago. I was a little worried at first glance of the menu because they make a specific point of saying that the chicken is cooked with onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers. I hate the stereotype that Midwesterners have bland palates, but I also know that a lot of us who grew up in small-town Wisconsin ate a lot of plain chicken or maybe spiced it up with some taco seasoning; actual vegetables cooked into taco meat is not a thing that happened in most households. The fact that the menu had to call it out leads me to believe there were a lot of bewildered guests who sent food back. Gratefully, the chicken had good flavor - the warning was there because it did taste like more than chicken. Hooray! I thoroughly enjoyed my chicken chimichanga and the portion was a steal at $7.50. I also had the horchata, which was very cinnamon-y, something I enjoy. In a rare move I ordered dessert to go - cheesecake chimis. Unfortunately these were a swing and a miss. The dessert was packaged hot with sauce and whipped cream into a ventless to-go box, causing everything to melt together and become a soggy mess. Separate containers for the sauce and whipped cream would have gone a long way to keeping the shell crispy. The overall flavor was that of a Toaster Strudel; not bad, but not what I was going for in terms of flavor. I can't complain too much, though - two lunch entrees, two drinks, and a dessert came in around $25. I'll happily stop in again next time I need a break from the campfire. read more

Bland bland bland. Service fast, food so bland it's a shame to call it Mexican. I ordered a chili relleno and it came with a ground up meat sauce on top....who does that??? The cheese inside had no substance and just oozed out. Not appetizing or tasty at all. The guacamole was just a smashed avocado, no added flavor....just bland. The chips and salsa came to the table quickly, but the salsa was like ketchup. I kept wondering if they kept the real Mexican food hidden in the back somewhere. My husband got the fish tacos, which were okay, but the main ingredient seemed to be the cabbage. We will not be back. Adios to this restaurant. read more

For me this is probably the best restaurant in Wisconsin Crapids. I have probably been here 1 million times and can honestly say never walked out disappointed. The food is always great and the service is good to. And talk about affordability with this place you can't beat it. When I ask for lemon wedges or lime wedges they bring me a small bowl full and I'm never charged extra and I gladly reflect it in the tip. The chimichangas especially shrimp are really good and I love the chili rellonose. With this place I'll keep coming back and always recommend it it's even better than the one in Stevens point! read more

The service was very nice and they had the obligatory Mexican music playing. I also liked that all the seating is in booths. Really good tortilla chips to start with when we sat down. They also had a very good selection of lunch plates to pick from. I had the verde chicken with side order of a chile releno. The verde sauce was decent, but the releno was awesome. I wish I had just got 2 of those for my meal and skipped the verde. They also had a good selection of deserts including a chaco taco which I hadn't seen since I was a little kid. read more

just finished some of the best carnitas that have ever tried--crispy hunks of pork that tasted like PORK, chips were warm and toasty, salsa pretty standard and the Negra Modelo too cold but carnitas were great and their take on a chile relleno was good although do prefer them crispy.. Most there offerings are standard--barely seasoned ground beef(or chicken) in the entrees, pico was fresh and tasty but had to ask for more. Guacamole too was light on fresh flavor and over processed. Service was quick and pleasant with standard hot plates. With all that will return for carnitas again for sure--fajitas are ok too but most everything else wasn't any different from any other Mexican place in all the cities around here read more
