What's not to love? Everything about El Monte was fulfilling! The food, service and atmosphere were outstanding! Definitely recommend this place to anyone! Also, the margaritas are amazing, ask for Tajin on the rim for a kick!

Best Mexican food for the price. Ordered tamales, lunch and dinner specials. Everything was delicious! Food was delivered hot and well packaged. Their Mexican flan satisfied my sweet tooth. Overall, pretty impressed with the quality of the food.

Fajitas quesadilla with rice and beans

Now, as I said in an earlier review, I had started going to El Monte because of its convenience, but also for the good food and friendly atmosphere. Normally, I wouldn't do a review of El Monte because I have been here many times before, but since I am searching for the best mexican restaurant in North Alabama, I am going to share my most recent experience at El Monte. Now, as usual, I start with the salsa. Normally, El Monte's salsa is banging. it's got the nice bite of spice and cilantro that keeps you going back for more. But this time, it seemed lacking in the spice department, but still had that cilantro kick. But, I can't say anything bad because I know the salsa is normally good, so don't let that discourage you. Next, the entree. I had the fajita quesadilla. Basically, it's a cheese quesadilla with all the usual fajita fixings (chicken, steak, bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes) and comes with mexican rice and refried beans. While I was a little apprehensive at first about the combination, it was actually very good. The fajita fixings were grilled up proper, and spiced up decent. I would highly recommend it to someone wanting to try something new on the menu. As I said before, I have been to El Monte many times, and every time I have been it has been just as good as the first time. For purposes of my review however, I am gonna call it like I see it and give it 4.5, but since Yelp only does whole numbers, I will leave it at a 5 in all fairness since this is a very good restaurant and highly recommend.

The food here is amazing! Doesn't taste artificial or store bought. I've been coming here for years since I moved to this side of Huntsville. I'm not much of a Tex Mex kind of guy since I'm Mexican myself, but I do appreciate that they keep things traditional instead of trying to go modern. Melany is one of the best bartenders and servers here. She always has a great attitude and biggest smile you can see. The decor is colorful and traditional, the music isn't too loud. Overall, a nice place to eat with the family and enjoy a cold drink.

Food was just okay. Other than the margarita, nothing impressive here. At least what I had wasn't. I ordered the Chimichanga with chicken. It was bland and the chunks of chicken was a bit on the tough side. I refrained from adding salt and pepper to it although it definitely could have benefited from some. Nice decor, energetic crowd and the prices were reasonable. Staff was very prompt. Our server didn't appear enthused initially about having another table but he eventually warmed up. Must've gotten a hold of Jose. :)

    Chicken Chimichanga Lunch Special

This was my first time trying El Monte and I was super impressed. I got the chicken chimichanga lunch special. The chicken had great flavor, there were good portions of pico, sour cream and guacamole. The rice and beans were flavorful, as was the queso. Another plus was the salsa portion size. It was three times the size that most Mexican restaurants serve. I will definitely be back!!

The service was excellent as was the ambience. I just found the food to be bland. I had to add salt to Tex-Mex food.

We've been to El Vaquero twice now to play trivia. While we enjoy the clean amenities and our…read moretrivia caller, both times, we've all been incredibly unhappy with our food. The restaurant is spacious and gets loud when there's a crowd. Thankfully, there's usually a place for our larger group (6 people) to be seated comfortably. Service is very nice but slow. Trivia runs for a little over an hour and both times our food has taken about 45 minutes to come out, despite our comparatively small orders. My friend who comes to trivia does like the food here (he always gets a beef chimichanga FWIW), but everyone else has now tried several different dishes and not once been satisfied or even just not unhappy. The one shining star has been the cheese dip. It really is pretty good cheese dip, lol. The first time I ordered the chipotle chicken, which is supposed to be chicken in a chipotle sauce. I was firstly surprised and disappointed to see these were small strips of chicken rather than a chicken breast. But that would've been okay...had the chipotle sauce been decent. It had no chipotle flavor and honestly mostly just tasted like sour cream. It was very weird. My parents have tried a beef burrito, beef taco, and chicken taco. They said the beef has an unpleasant metallic taste and the shredded chicken was, according to my dad, inedible. Most recently, my husband got a carne asada burrito and said it tasted so unpleasant he was concerned about whether he should even eat it. Fortunately, no ill effects came about as a result of it; he determined it was ultimately just very low quality meat with an unpleasant texture and taste. My father in law just doesn't order anything except a beer after coming for breakfast once and having a bad time there, too. On my most recent visit, I got a side of rice and beans to eat with chips and cheese dip. The rice had been cooked into sticky, mushy lumps and had no flavor. At this point, I have no idea what to order that might even come close to satisfying my palate. It's disappointing. We may be forced back due to circumstances like our availability in order for us to play our favorite game and have time together. If so, I'll continue to try different things until I can maybe someday find something that works. I want to like this place and wish I had the experience so many other reviewers have had.

We specifically came for margaritas during their social hour. $3 off a set list plus seasonals. There was a table card listing seasonal drinks. I specifically asked our waitress if the Christmas margarita was considered seasonal. She assured me it was, until we got our check and she said it wasn't. I'm not arguing over $6 but $26 for two watered down drinks was not a social hour deal. It's not a deal anywhere. My husband and I shared the three different empanadas gracing the social hour menu. The chicken was delicious, the beef was ok but the fish was fishy. So much so that I didn't even get to a second bite. We ordered chips, salsa and queso for the group. The chips were great - crisp and airy. The queso was good though unremarkable, the green salsa was great. The red was a tad hot for me but everyone else at the table disagreed with me. Husband and I shared the enchiladas verdes. Three chicken enchiladas were served with a plate of nearly tasteless rice. The enchiladas were dry. Even queso didn't help. I ate half of one and my husband didn't even want my second. We didn't take home the leftover enchilada. That pretty much sums them up - not even worthy of a to-go box. With tip, our check was $90.
