I ordered fresh guacamole and two fish tacos. The guacamole was served in a large bowl with chopped avocado and salsa type toppings. Fresh guacamole is the perfect name. Large enough for at least 4 people. Two tacos in had corn shells were easy to eat. The shells were hard but flexible:tasty and a good texture that doesn't disappoint. My husband got the steak fajita. This is the third time in 3 years we have eaten at El Monte, it will probably be the last. 2 of the three times I felt like we were paying too much for the portions we got compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area. This latest time I ordered the burrito grande, with the name grande it should be really big compared to other burritos, at other Mexican restaurants I've ordered a burrito with the same name, it was as long as the platter, El Monte's isn't much bigger than a burrito from Taco Bell for 3 times the price. My wife ordered one of their combo plates, when she asked where the beans and rice were she was told that was extra, when have you ever seen a Mexican restaurant that didn't give you rice and beans with a dinner plate? Now, as I said in an earlier review, I had started going to El Monte because of its convenience, but also for the good food and friendly atmosphere. Normally, I wouldn't do a review of El Monte because I have been here many times before, but since I am searching for the best mexican restaurant in North Alabama, I am going to share my most recent experience at El Monte. Now, as usual, I start with the salsa. Normally, El Monte's salsa is banging. it's got the nice bite of spice and cilantro that keeps you going back for more. But this time, it seemed lacking in the spice department, but still had that cilantro kick. But, I can't say anything bad because I know the salsa is normally good, so don't let that discourage you. Next, the entree. I had the fajita quesadilla. Basically, it's a cheese quesadilla with all the usual fajita fixings (chicken, steak, bell peppers, onions, and tomatoes) and comes with mexican rice and refried beans. While I was a little apprehensive at first about the combination, it was actually very good. The fajita fixings were grilled up proper, and spiced up decent. I would highly recommend it to someone wanting to try something new on the menu. As I said before, I have been to El Monte many times, and every time I have been it has been just as good as the first time. For purposes of my review however, I am gonna call it like I see it and give it 4.5, but since Yelp only does whole numbers, I will leave it at a 5 in all fairness since this is a very good restaurant and highly recommend. read more

Upon walking in, the atmosphere was good. I was greeted, the wait to be recognized was short, and the overall service was good. I got my food to go, and that was also reasonably delivered in good time. However, the food tasted like something I made at home. The enchiladas were in a soup of cheese, beans and rice. The presentation was sloppy. When I got home to eat, the food was bland. Typically, Mexican food is favorable, but this was far from it. In fact, in tasted like someone forgot to season it. I would say my biggest surprise was how much it was. For just me, I paid almost $20 for just the entree. I usually go to LosTrojas or more known places and even with a drink it's less than that. The food here is amazing! Doesn't taste artificial or store bought. I've been coming here for years since I moved to this side of Huntsville. I'm not much of a Tex Mex kind of guy since I'm Mexican myself, but I do appreciate that they keep things traditional instead of trying to go modern. Melany is one of the best bartenders and servers here. She always has a great attitude and biggest smile you can see. The decor is colorful and traditional, the music isn't too loud. It was bland and the chunks of chicken was a bit on the tough side. I refrained from adding salt and pepper to it although it definitely could have benefited from some. This was my first time trying El Monte and I was super impressed. I got the chicken chimichanga lunch special. The chicken had great flavor, there were good portions of pico, sour cream and guacamole. The rice and beans were flavorful, as was the queso. Another plus was the salsa portion size. The Food is good, located in a shopping center it provides an authentic Mexican Cuisine and is prepared and served by a Mexican staff further adding to authenticity. I've only eaten here once so others experiences may differ, but the staff was punctual, my drink was always full, the food came out quick, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was relaxing. I have no complaints with the staff or the quality of the food. We've eaten here twice, and I wish the food was anywhere near the level of the service and atmosphere. I have to give one star because the food is so poor. The main problem with the food is that it is unseasoned, bland, and tastes pre-packaged. Last time I ordered the Chile Relleno as part of a dinner platter with an enchilada and beans and rice. The Chile Relleno was tasteless and the interior consistency was as if it were pre-chewed - very unappetizing. This time we had enchiladas (cheese & chicken) and a chimichanga. Again, none of the fillings had any seasoning - just plain, boring, dry chicken breast meat wrapped in tortillas. The chicken had no seasoning - it was dry and so plain. The enchilada sauce was also so tomato-y it could have been sugarless ketchup. The salsa is also straight out of a bottle or can - it tastes like bad spaghetti sauce. The waiters are quick and attentive, and the restaurant is cute and always busy - too bad the food is so, so bad. Even the refried beans were tasteless. In contrast, El Coyote in Gurley, while far from perfect, has tasty, well seasoned Tex-mex favorites. I was always very happy with the food and service at this restaurant. Tonight we ordered almost $100 worth of food from here to be delivered via grubsouth. I ordered fajitas michaocanas for 2 and paid for extra shrimp, rice, and sour cream, and asked for no lettuce, guacamole, or beans. There was no extra rice or sour cream and there was lettuce in both the side salads for the fajitas. There were 10 shrimp total in a double order. I always order the single and have five shrimp in a single order. The manager was unbothered and unwilling to work with grubsouth. Upon advice of the grubsouth agent I called to speak with the manager of the restaurant. I was very polite and explained the situation and said we commonly order close to $100 worth of food and that we wouldn't be coming back because of the service on this issue that should have been a simple and inexpensive fix on his end. Instead of apologizing or showing any remorse, he almost seemed happy. Granted, had I been being rude or exceptionally difficult, this would be understandable. I have worked in customer service for many many years in a supervisory role. This manager completely missed the mark on any type of acceptable customer service. I know we are in hard times with the virus stuff, but that is all the more reason to take care of good customers that frequently spend a lot of money with you.
