The butcher in the back of the store was very helpful and wrapped them up fresh for me. My broth turned out delicious! I'm not sure where else in the area that I could find such a specific specialty item, but Las Maravillas had my back, as always. I even walked out with fresh jamaica juice that did not disappoint. I'm not sure of anywhere else locally that I could find that either, though it's not something they have every day and they often run out of these types of fresh juices toward the end of the day. I'll keep coming back to this place no matter what, but keep in mind that they are not open on Sundays.

The grocery has lots of Mexican staples, and they usually have specials - either tamales, or Horchata, or Mexican corn, or mango with Cayenne pepper. All are delicious. I always feel welcome, and the folks here are very nice. Great place, especially if you're already there getting some delicious tacos at Los Primos.

I'll start with the establishment/location. This joint is in the heart of the Whitehall/Columbus area. Yes, many years ago, Hamilton Road was chuck full of businesses, restaurants and shopping stripes. However, over the last 20 years, things have changed: businesses closing; higher crime; demographics. Since I'm all for the hidden gems, when a friend told me about this place, I was excited! First time I walked into this grocery store, I got confused. I didn't see any tables - was I in the wrong place? I had to ring up my friend and have him direct me toward the back left corner of the shop. The eatery part is not big. A few tables. Three or so booths. And a small stand with the register. That's it, nothing to gawk at. The service had always been good. Polite and fast. Both times my friend and I have gotten a pork burrito and #48 (starts with an M, but I forget what it's called!). The burrito has consistently been fantastic. Moist juicy pork. Great mix of toppings. You can taste the different components, too. That's a big deal-breaker for me: so many Mexican places serve burritos that have a homogenous taste. Nothing standing out. Not the case here! Here goes my best attempt to describe #48: it consists of thin strips of steak and chicken and freshly cooked small shrimp. Red and green peppers are mixed in with the protein. Mozzarella cheese is sprinkled on top. The cool part? These ingredients are tossed in a black bowl and pushed into the oven. Everything cooks in the bowl. The outcome is all flavor, every bite! The meat is lightly seasoned - the perfect amount. Oh yeah, almost forgot! When you're seated, a giant basket of chips and three types of salsa are brought out: the normal red salsa; a green Tomatillo dip; and orange tinted hot salsa to top it off. And it's not just a store. We actually came for the restaurant, which isn't much of a much, essentially the deli counter at the store. But oh, the treasures you'll find. They have a very basic menu- burritos, tortas, etc.- but arrayed in the cases are tons of premade bulk items. You can fill up a container with meats, rice, beans, whatever. Too much to choose from. Drinks were pretty much horchata or hibiscus, but of course you can grab a bottle from nearby coolers, and there is an actual bar right there too. We dined in, essentially felt like a food court. And had some of the best Mexican food in town. Beef in several sauces, ribs done 5 ways, a couple kinds of rice and beans, and much more. I was stuffed. Baby K got a cheese quesadilla and said it was the best she ever had, for what that's worth (it looked really good.) The horchata was very good. My friend had a torta plus some ribs and beef, and loved all of it. Then we went to the market, and it was a blast too. Got some baked goods, candy, drinks, etc. Plenty of dry goods, produce, meats, and much more. Friendly helpful staff, though a definite language barrier so be patient and remember your high school Spanish. We'll definitely be back. Lots of good food to try, and new ingredients to explore. Plus their macaroni salad looked amazing.

The tamales were tasty-- they have 3 diferent types and I got one of each. They were all a bit spicy so that's something to beware of because it wasn't expected. The queso was warm and creamy, it was a queso blanco, but there wasn't a large portion. I liked the tacos, but the birria tacos were served open face and without a side of consomme, definitely a little disappointing. The birria ramen was super rich, delicious, and cheesy, but very oily. The noodles themselves were cooked so much that they were quite mushy. I also wished that it came with some cilantro and onions or other veggies in it. I might order from here again, but it probably won't be my go-to if I'm craving birria.

Everything eventually becomes USA-ified to meet the demands of most people here. Finally, El Tulipan Grocery Store transported me back to salsa dancing in Mexico City, the mom and pop restaurants in Guajira, the interconnected family environment we love to feel apart and wish we had grown up in -- they bring you right to the center of something of origin, heritage, and hopefully a restaurant that will refuse to be changed or updated. Tulipan is perfect the way it is. Please dont come here with any demands, complaints, or cause these dear people any stress with overly critical reviews. Its a blessing to stumble through the sidewall into a "speakeasy" gem of a restaurant like this. Im so glad I finally found I was looking for in Columbus.

This particular store has everything you need to make popular Filipino dishes in Columbus Ohio, save for the lechon. I'm curious where Chuchay Supermarket 1 is. I came for a tabo (lol), a fiesta plate for my media noche display (mmm puto, sapin sapin, and kusinta), and some candies from my childhood (sampaloc). The lady who rang me up was of course lovely to talk to. The store also features another area where they sell purses and housewares. I'll definitely have to come back here whenever I visit my in-laws.

My friend wanted to check it out so we drove over here. Not super busy on a Sunday afternoon! They have more inventory than the main grocery in Westerville! I got a few things: a sauce for making sisig, fishdah (fish-flavored chips), instant arroz caldo, frozen bangus fish, and calamansi juice. Most ingredients I already had at home. But the frozen stuff piqued my interest. I would love to try the different boba ice cream flavors and other snacks. They have quite a decent selection of frozen seafood too. My favorite is bangus. But they also had red snapper among other things. It's a family-owned store. They are the same folks who own Kuya Ian!
