I bought enchiladas and chilaquiles to go yesterday. I only ate one enchilada last night as it wasn't that good. I've had diarrhea all night long and all day today. My son just started with diarrhea now. He ate some enchiladas as well. I've bought arroz con leche and it has been old. I enjoy their produce and bakery. It may seem a stretch to theme a side eatery attached to a Mexican grocery to the latest stock market craze but considering that this amazing stonk of a place hangs inside the shadow of Hollywood casino--'casino' an apt word for the market has become--the metaphor is germane; the grub here is the most bullish buy on the Mexicana scene--it is the best Broad Street bet in the eastside market. (Cue the Cathy Wood thumbnail.) I came here to meet fellow swing trader Mike G to lord over him my Plug Power winnings porn and his lack of following my picks. Lol. This restaurant was his idea, and I, usually bearish on Mexican food, have decided to diversify my palate portfolio and agreed. As said this place is on East Broad behind a highly volatile parking lots; lots of ups and down with the potholes but the savvy gormandizer knows to buy the dips and have diamond hands to reach the eventual trendies inside. You'll find this joint just inside the grocery store that has that 1970s style. The moat on this play is its authenticity--this isn't El Vaquero, that diluted float of Americanized Mexican made to list on the NYSE--this is the real stuff. Its menu is in Espanol--so if you can't read that romantic language then you should lay off the action and invest in the Americanized ETFs. Tapatia refers to the city of Guadalajara; whether this means the food here is made in that tradition is outside my chart analysis. The inside is clean with loads of space. The service has high liquidity, and you will get filled quick. Both Mike and I had the Chimichanga. We both chose the pollo over carne for the protein. The chicken was so tasty and cooked exactly right. It comes with the traditional sides of refried beans, fresh Guacamole, and the reddest fried rice you will ever see outside your daily Robinhood status report. It is very filling and so come hungry and ready to eat, this isn't the place for low margin stomachs. And at the price of $11 it will not short squeeze your wallet either. The beer prices here are high; but that's ok, with everything else here being good the store deserves a little premium. So TL;DR: I like the restaurant. If you're on East Broad and ready to invest in a good meal, put a bid in here. Buy the call, sell the put--the probability of a profitable eat is high. What is there to say about this store expect it has just about everything you'll need. It feels a lot bigger inside compared to looking at it on the outside. I grabbed a few of the cake and doughnuts and some eggs for the moment but I'll be back in here again pretty soon to do major shopping. The meat selection was incredible and I wanna try their seasoned chicken. I also wouldn't mind checking out their ice cream selection sometime. AN ENTHUSIASTIC 5 STARS and one of my favorite places in the city. I can't believe some of the other weak reviews. This is my favorite - by far - Mexican grocery in the city. Clean, wide aisles, friendly people, and a FANTASTIC meat department with great, fresh meats at ridiculously cheap prices. The restaurant is also REALLY, REALLY GOOD. There is a woman behind the counter making fresh tortillas by hand - she starts with fresh dough, presses them flat in a hand press, and grills them on a flattop. They're absolutely delicious tortillas, and it's hard to find fresh, house-made tortillas in Columbus. We had the Molcajete Mixto for 2 - a ridiculous amount of incredibly delicious grilled steak, pork chops, chicken, chorizo, and big shrimps. For $28.99 it would have fed 4 people. A great bargain, and a delicious meal. We'll be back, soon. Until then I'll crave the restaurant, and wish I'd made purchases at the meat counter... read more

I was so excited for my neighborhood, The Hilltop, to be given the opportunity to have a brand new Plaza. Definitely not impressed Yes, it is clean and new. Yes, I will guess that there are Kinks to work out. However, many many products throughout the store were not priced. I am not fluent in Spanish, and you do not have to be, to shop and enjoy the experience here. However, I admit that I wondered when I got to the register did I, not being Hispanic, get charged different prices dance someone who is Hispanic on those items that were not priced inside the store. I know that's a negative thought however I felt uneasy that's so many products were on priced. The knot pricing items became very frustrating when at some of the deli type counter you got things and didn't realize how expensive they were until you got to the register. I am cautious that my skepticism on things are also negatively influencing the economic structures and Hispanic families if they shop here read more

Do not eat here ever. Food is good but we saw a cockroach walking on the wall real close to us. It's been said that the best way to TRULY experience another culture is to wander the aisles of a grocery store/market place. I've done just that near and far, and I completely agree!! Where else can you see just what's important, exotic and mundane on a REAL LIFE scale?!? It beats shoving your way through the crowds at some fancy pants/hoity-toity museum (yes, I know museums are IMPORTANT too, but you gotta get off the tourist trail AND out of your comfort zone every now and then!!) Coast in general, b) my much missed world travels, and c) my old stomping grounds, SURPRISINGLY international Columbus, Ohiooooo are the AMAZING international markets!!! Everything from little holes in the wall spots where YOU feel so "foreign" that you almost feel like you should have your passport to get in, to the more organized/established places. LA PLAZA TAPATIA is more established, but still INSTANTLY transported me back to Mexico!! It's on the West Side, ground zero (still?) for the 30,000 plus Mexicans, and if you can't find it here... ya probably need to make a run for the border!! Great fresh fruits and veggies, including hard to find cactus fruit (tunas!) papaya, mango, yuca, and so much more. The general groceries are a great mix of what's here (but more comfortable for new arrivals to get familiar brands) and what's FAR from anything we've got here. WONDERFUL baked goods as well, a great (organized!!) hodge-podge of pots, pans, and tons more STUFF!!! PLUS..... fresh, home-made TAMALES for sale up front by the registers (just when you FINALLY (mistakenly) think you're done!!) WARNING! They will not accept their electronic Entertainment coupons. I never carry the book and use the electronic version instead via the Entertainment app with my purchased code. When I went to pay, they said that they will only accept paper (you cannot print out the electronic - once you open the coupon, you have to immediately show it to the server as it is only good for the one time when you access it). There is no sign telling you of this policy, and they are responsible for the coupon they sold through Entertainment. We did pay the full bill but, of course, will never return. read more

Stopped in to check out their new ice cream shop. The employees were so nice! They let us try everything. They have build your own yogurt cups, ice cream, flavored water, juices, and popsicles. Everything was so fresh and flavorful! There wasn't anything I tried that I didn't like. read more

La Plaza Tapatia is wonderful. Go through the first set of doors, into the second set of doors, and your every Mexican food desire will be satisfied. Flautas. Mole. Tortas. And yes, tacos and burritos too. Burritos are red or green. Don't forget horchata, jamaica, and other liquid ways to mess up your endocrine system. Portions are huge. Easily share for two people. But would you ever? No. Radishes on the plate: you know it's good. Menu only in Spanish as far as I know, but the waitresses can manage basic English. And all the Yelp reviews of Mexican restaurants start with the reviewer's attempt at scoring Mexican street cred (I've been to Cancun / I got a B in Spanish / I know Taco Bell is fake) so maybe my unconscious did the same at the beginning of this review. read more

Restaurant side: Hubs and I went, we're Mexican food snobs, blah blah blah. He really loved his chiles rellenos, and I have to say, they were good--it's nice to go to a place that actually uses a Mexican cheese inside. I had a torta cubana, and it was so-so. I liked that they used real ham, but it just doesn't stand up to other tortas cubanas that I've had. Next time, I'll have tacos or carnitas. Grocery side: LOVE IT! Tons of interesting ingredients; good prices on things that are common in Mexico but overpriced in American groceries, like piloncillo, jamaica (hibiscus), various spices and teas. Awesome selection of baked goods (we didn't get any THIS time... but next time, Gadget) and bolillos for making tortas. What looked like an extensive meat counter, but we couldn't even get close on a Sunday--will have to go back during the week to check it out. Have not eaten at the restaurant, but the grocery on other side is Great!!! The pastries are fresh (and baked there) also have Tres Leches cakes!!!!! Flank steak is super fresh and only $4.99/lb, ( never see that low of a price anywhere!!!!). Produce is usually really good, they have piñatas and a Mexican candy store inside. Having heard of a panaderia in the vacinity of Westland, the boy and I went on an adventure to the West siiiiiide in search of Mexican confectionary goodness. What we ended up finding was La Plaza Tapatia, the most amazing plaza ever. La Plaza Tapatia is millions of things in one - it's a Mexican grocery, an ice cream shop, a restuarant, a bakery AND a music store. No, really. It's incredible. We asked if there were any freestanding panaderias in the vacinity, but were told the one inside La Plaza is the only one, so we must have found what we were looking for! Unfortunately, we were both so stuffed from lunch at Ray Ray's Hog Pit that we couldn't fathom buying any sweets - but they all looked absolutely incredible. We vow to go back, on empty stomaches, and hit up the restaurant and the panaderia. If you like ethnic groceries or real Mexican restaurants, stop in here. This is the real deal - it's like La Michoacana on crack. And you can buy some Mexican music to listen to while you eat your sweet breads. Surely this is heaven. read more

Ok so the grocery section is awesome. They have everything that I need for when I go grocery shopping. Of course I only buy the Mexican products there because it's the only place, besides the Michoacanas, where I can get them. I like the fact that I can order a pastel de tres leeches the size of a car ;) no but seriously it's a great place to shop. The restaurant is..... So so. It's not the best but it's not the worst either. If I go in a group we usually order a parrillada. If I go during lunch time their buffet works just fine. There's no doubt at their cooking is closer to the real thing than let's say El Vaquero or Fiesta Mariachi. I don't like the fact that the cashiers will start to check someone else out before I finish paying my transaction. Other than it's definitely a place worth visiting. I was raised in Los Angeles - so I've been on a hunt for bomb-ass Mexican restaurants ever since I moved here three years ago. I don't understand why people rave about El Vaquero - it's gross and has no character. La Plaza is as authentic as it gets when it comes to Mexican restaurants. They serve cooked cactus, micheladas, lengua...all the staples of a good Mexican meal. Their carnitas are cooked tenderly, they serve you a lot of tortillas when you order an entree, and their tacos are pretty stellar. Their menus are in Spanish, so request one in English if you need it. My only complaints about the restaurant side is that you have to order chips/salsa and their rice is a little below average. Now - the grocery store section. It's pretty average, nothing to write home about. But they do have a pretty great meat counter. read more

Tonight my wife and I searched out this place because of a wonderful Columbus Monthly review about their Tamales! CM was inept in the accolade! The chicken Tamale was so dry I could barely swallow it! There was so little chicken it was sad! What really destroyed our opinion was the margaritas! They were syrupy gross concoctions that were not palatable! They also had armed guards at the entrance and the shopping carts were from neighboring businesses like Giant Eagle! We were concerned for our safety and would never suggest for anyone to go there! This place is the real deal. Although, unlike other reviewer's experience, our server spoke English just fine. My wife had a couple tacos, and I had a chimichanga with steak. It was basically a meat log. Ha. It had a really good queso sauce on top (which they also serve with their home made chips). And some sub-par beans and rice on the side. My wife's tacos were very good and were served with a very good salsa roja. We washed it all down with a couple of warmish Dos Equis. Was there for the México-Germany World Cup match, a full house. The waitresses worked hard and did a great job serving over 100 of us screaming fans. The restaurant is filled with several monitors in every corner, and a huge giant screen facing the back wall that just made watching the game there a wonderful experience. For food, I had the green chilaquiles with chicken, they were really good, plus a giant industrial size horchata that filled me up the rest of the game. Overall, a great experience! read more

You got to try their buffet; it will be the best exposure to real Mexican food you can find around Columbus. Since any other restaurant calls itself "authentic mexican" but they are not (examples are Cuco's and El Vaquero's which are AMERICANIZED MEXICAN food - good by the way but NOT Mexican), I don't know what to say about this place. It is great. Let's put it this way: it has food you are not likely to eat in any other restaurant and it tastes the way I remember it from my childhood in Mexico. It is great! The service is friendly and prompt; the owner's sister is also kind and helpful. I love the atmosphere. It makes me feel I'm in Jalisco or something. I like that they have soups, rice (not only the typical orange rice but also white and green which are not often served in any other restaurant that calls itself Mexican). They have the main dish (a guisado of some sort - mole, chilposo, estofado de pollo, calabacitas con queso, o rajas con queso, flautas, pechuga rellena, etc). And my two favorite parts: they offer black beans (not only pinto) and they have a dessert section with items besides the typical flan and tres leches cakes offered in other places. They provide fried plantains, jello, pears in sweet sauce, jícamas with lime and chile pepper (or mangos or cucumbers), oranges, polvorones cookies and other treats. They also have sweet waters such as jamaica, horchata and others made of fruits (watermelon, mango, cantaloupe, pineapple) depending on the season. I love it there and would go almost everyday if I lived near by (right now I'm living on the north side of town). The drive out there is worth it when I do it. read more

Hubby and I tried the restaurant here for the first time tonight. First of all, they do not have iced tea. Who doesn't have iced tea??!? Second, we ordered a side of queso to dip our chips in. It was lukewarm. Thought that was weird but ordered our meals anyway. My husband loved the garlic shrimp he got. It was a very strange meal with a bazillion carbs! It was shrimp with rice, french fries, and a big slab of bread. I got the chimichanga meal. I've never had a chimichanga with the meat literally minced up in pieces so small it was hard to keep it on my fork! Also, my sides were also lukewarm. Both beans and rice. I told the waitress this but she didn't even discount or comp part or the whole meal! Very disappointed with this place. Several items ordered were incorrect as a result of this barrier and it was difficult to get things fixed for the same reason. If you want the most authentic Mexican experience, come here! You might want to learn a little Spanish before you do though, because most people here don't speak much English. Thats kind of the idea though, it hasn't been Americanized yet. This is the kind of place where you can see them making the tortillas right at the counter, and you just might have your idea of what Mexican food is overturned by the end of it. This is a gem, but as I mentioned before, because of the language barrier, as well as the area(lock your doors, don't leave any valuables or evidence of valuables laying around) it probably won't ever get extremely popular. I actually had my work vehicle broken into while visiting one of my favorite Mexican places which is In the Westland Mall, not the one in the old Chi Chi's. Also, this is attached to a grocery store which is also well worth checking out. They have some pretty spectacular Mexican cheeses to try. read more

I enjoy this restaurant because of the variety of services they offer, but my most recent experience will end my patronage of this establishment. On Wednesday May 3rd I called in a carry out order to be picked up May 5th, my Cinco De Mayo meal, I spoke to a lady named Wendy, she told me the cost for my tamales and tacos would be $50.50, no problem, until I showed up to pick up my order and was told the bill was $62.50, I gasp hand asked why the big difference in what I was quoted everyone acted like the could not understand me me , I ask to speak to Wendy, she appeared and said that was the cost, that's it. I was pissed and probable should have just left but I need the food for my party. This has happened to me before at this establishment but never again because I will not return and my advise to you is beware if you take the chance. What a hidden treat! Behind the practically empty old Westland Mall is a grocery store, bakery, and restaurant with EVERYTHING! The produce is fresh and there are lots of grocery items you won't see at your neighborhood Kroger. The bakery items are addicting - but not sugary. Haven't tried the restaurant yet.
