This place was the worst. It's very small, mariachi almost blew the roof off. She gave us chips and salsa and no water.They took our drink and food orders. Forgot about us for about an hour. No drinks the whole time we waited. Food comes cold and drink had a clear plastic in it. Food was horrible and no flavor and dry. Don't recommend this place at all. It's all authentic: tacos, tortas, entrees and a few dishes which were new to me. Their chips and salsa alone are good enough to come back for! Wow. These have probably been the best enchiladas Rojas I have ever had. They were flavorful, well seasoned and well packed with meat. Big enough to feed two people to be honest. Rice was delish, well cooked and had good amount of salt. It wasn't to salty nor to bland, it was just right. I've been here twice now--once for takeout (10/30/16) and earlier today for lunch with a couple of others--and I can finally comment on a handful of items. I'm giving a 4/5, but it's more of a 3.5/5 with all things considered. The menu is large, all dishes are reasonably priced, and there's plenty of seating despite the dearth of parking. Complementary chips, salsa, and pico de gallo: The chips were freshly fried, crispy, and plentiful. The food takes awhile to be served, but these should keep you happy until then. Al Pastor Burrito ($8.50): It's stuffed generously and comes with fries, but it was disappointing. We forgot to snap a picture, but come to think of it, it wasn't that appealing anyway. The tortilla does not hold up that well--the filling ended up falling out--but the biggest thing we didn't like was that it was stuffed with too much rice. You can barely taste the meat (or anything else) since there was very little of it. Flavorful? Yes, but we probably won't order this again. Enchiladas Rojas ($9.50): The person who ordered this chose chicken for the filling, but you can pick something else. It comes with rice and beans and is topped with queso fresco and red sauce. I merely tasted it, but it was said to be pretty flavorless--the chicken, in particular. Everything else (rice, beans, and sauce) were said to be good, but nothing special. Platillo Mixto ($14.50): Think of this more as a meat sampler. On a large plate, you get a slice of dried salted beef, grilled beef and chicken, spicy marinated pork, chorizo, guacamole, queso fresco, cambray, grilled green onion, grilled cactus, and four corn tortillas. Without going into too much detail, I enjoyed each one. They were all a bit dry, but flavorful. Cemita Especial ($7.50): I'm well acquainted with the quintessential Mexican torta, but never have I had a Cemita. This is one helluva sandwich for $7.50. Between a sliced Cemita roll are three breaded and fried chicken cutlets (Milanesa de pollo), ham, bacon, a fried egg, sliced avocado, queso blanco, and a pickled chili pepper. I have a big appetite, but I ended up saving half of this. There are no vegetables in the Especial; it's almost all protein. This is what I ordered for takeout a few weeks ago, and would certainly order it again. Everyone here is friendly. The crowd is pretty loud and festive during the weekend when there's a Mariachi band playing, but it's rather quiet on the weekdays. We had mixed reviews, but again, I'd still come back for the Cemitas and maybe try another platter. read more

We decided to try a new Mexican restaurant as our usual spot is a drive and we didn't feel like going out. Ordered our normal order for a one to one comparison and we were really let down. Everything was wet? Like watered down wet. The refried beans made a thin puddle on the plate that didn't stand up to gravity. The enchiladas rojo were mealy and the sauce was so watered down all you got was a little heat and an overwhelming whack of liquid smoke flavoring. The rice was a yellowish grey with one sad pea. The mole was actually alright but again, excessively watery. We threw it away and got take out as it was already late. If you're running out of food, don't try to water it down or bulk it up. Just don't take the order. Maybe this would have been good normally but after this experience we won't be back to find out. read more

Tried this place after seeing some decent reviews. Got the enchiladas Rojas which were inedible. Had them with chicken and there was a strange taste, which was over run by the heat. Nothing flavorful no taste to the sauce, just heat. The rice was also flavorless. and the refried beans were sitting in a puddle of water...with 2 chips stuck in them making them soggy and limp. I'm not sure how they could even send a plate out like this. Two other meals in the order were similarily bad. Everything went in the garbage. There are much better Mexican Restaurants in this area, this one should not be one you choose, huge waste of money. read more

Lots of good things in Mexican cuisine start with the letter T, tacos, tamales, tortas, tostadas etc. The best thing though, starts with the letter C, Cemita and if you come to El Popocatepetl that's what you need to get. Stashed away in a quiet corner of Roselle, the humble exterior conceals a large indoor space with plenty of tables, and a huge mural of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl in one of the dining rooms. The interior is nice and so are the waitresses, who are happy to listen to you stumble through broken Spanish when ordering and then go over your order in English just to be sure. No matter how poor your Spanish, or English for that matter, you get a big basket of fresh home made chips and cups of salsa roja, salsa verde and pico de gallo as soon as you sit down. The salsas are more flavorful than spicy and don't overpower the taste of the fresh chips. The chips are excellent, but let's talk some more about the Cemitas. How Cemitas haven't caught on in the main stream is beyond me. The fluffy, eggy, rich bun that El Popocatepetl serves them on is the perfect holder for the fillings. You can get a selection of fillings, carnitas, al pastor, Milanesa etc, but the star of the show is the Arabe. Arabe is the result the fusion of the cooking techniques from middle eastern settlers to Mexico in the 19th century, with the local spices and seasonings of Mexico, except instead of lamb or beef, pork is the meat of choice. Slow roasted on a spit, the flavor of the Arabe is savory and rich and salty and goes perfectly with the Oaxacan cheese, avocado slices, pickled vegetables, lettuce, tomatoes and papalo. Drizzle it with the smokey salsa roja that comes with it(not the stuff that comes with the chips) and you get a sandwich that's incredibly delicious and will change the way you think not only about Mexican food, but what can be done with sandwiches. Finding good, authentic Mexican food is a journey and finding a place like El Popocatepetl is one of the best rewards I've had so far on it. I love that they have fresh squeezed orange juice it's a perfect pairing for chicken flautas, which I love here. It's serviced with flavorful Mexican rice, decried beans & avocados and topped with lettuce and queso fresco. Their chips and freshly fried and they make great Guac as well. Four stars but bordering on five. Only because I've yet to sample the entire menu. Absolutely delicious food. Prices so low and reasonable, I believe you'd be hard pressed to locally find the same quality, flavor and abundance ratio at their price point. Cash only and (a plus) BYOB. Not sure if its strictly weekends, but I've noted an excellent mariachi band perform for their patrons on Saturdays and Sundays. If you enjoy Mexican food, you won't be disappoint. Don't expect a chain restaurant environment but DO expect a free serving of masa chips w an amazing home made red and green salsa. I recommend their grilled chicken or chorizo 'torta' to anyone who is a first timer or hesitant about Mexican food. The service here sucks. I've never left a review anywhere but i had to tell everyone about Thisbe unprofessional place. One day i go with my friend. We sit down. 20 min in and no one came to assist us so we left. So i gave them the benefit of the doubt and went back again. 2nd time around i order my food she said 20 min i told her I'll be back i came back 20 min later and waited an additional 25 min. Mind you all i ordered was a sandwich!!!! Totaling 45 min for one sandwich. Fast forward a month later i say to myself "let me call ahead of time". I call in order the same sandwich she says 5 min. Knowing how they are i gave them 25 min. I go in TWENTY FIVE MINUTES LATER AFTER BEING TOLD 5 and she has the audacity to tell me she can't find the order and says she forgot to place the order. Mind u I'm being nice and she had a snotty attitude (in Spanish). I told her this isn't the first time this has happened. She obviously disagreed. Very flavorful food and BYOB. My chipotle shrimp was amazing and I got a large portion of shrimp on my plate. My boyfriends steak wasn't over cooked or rough.
