This place isnt big and I honestly drove by. BUT I'm so glad I was able to find it. The 4 stars are for parking because it's either street parking or in a lot that I'm not sure you should park in. I didn't read the signs because I parked on the street. Going on football Sunday means all the games are on with most people really interested in watching. The food was really good. I had the carne asada tacos. I also ordered the chorizo dip which was so good. I asked for more chips. Our waitress was perfect. She stopped by and didnt rush us. I really appreciated it. Tucked away in a strip mall on Raritan Road in Roselle and formerly known as Villa Tequila Bar, a few of my colleagues decided on lunch at Johnny Tequila's. Upon entering, for some of us as first-timers to this two-level restaurant that could seat about 100, we were greeted by the staff inside a lively, modern vibe with music pumping throughout that patrons have always flocked to. We sat on a high table by the window surrounded by the caricatures of famous deceased artists such as Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse, and Tupac, to name a few. Their menu features nuevo Latino cuisine with roots in Central and South America, Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, with vegan options. For starters, we decided to share the Guacamole with Fresh House Made Tortilla Chips. As the main meal, we opted for the Shrimp Burrito, Chicharrones De Pollo, and Tostones De Ropa Vieja. We washed them down with Strawberry Margarita, Coco Loco, and Red Sangria. The meal was tastefully delicious, made from the freshest and most flavorful ingredients. The portion was a healthy size. The price was reasonable. The service was friendly and attentive; our server was Jennifer. Came here on tuesday night. The place was pretty empty. Parking was easy to find in the shopping center next door. We ordered 2 mock tails that were good. We also ordered chips and salsa, the empanada trio, rice and beans, and fried plantain. The chips for the chips and salsa were taco shells broken in half. They were very stale and greasy. The salsa was good though. The friend plaintain were also stale. Everything tasted like it was pre cooked then fried again. The empanadas were meh, and the rice and beans were actually good. We wanted to ordered the tres leches for dessert but they didnt have any. All in all this is an ok place. Drinks are better than the food. read more

My mom and I came here to celebrate my latest move and I absolutely love this restaurant! It neverrrr disappoints. The vibes are always amazing even during the week. The service is quickkk and the food is always delicious. We started out with the guacamole and chips and the alcapurrias stuffed with ropa vieja- it slapped to say the least. My mom ordered the steak and shrimp tacos which were soooo tasty I wish ordered the same thing. I got the Baja fish tacos which were also really good! Food was delicious! Highly recommend. Birria tacos had a lot of meat and the dipping sauce was very tasty. The chicken tinga (shredded) burrito was very good as well. It was big and the tortilla was grilled which was a nice touch. Appreciate the whole beans instead of refried beans. I was glad they put the salsa roja on the side because it was very spicy. The first time I came in here, I feel absolutely inlove! We were seated downstairs which the ambiance was such a music video feel. The decor was amazing, and the lighting was great. Music selection was * chef kiss * it was great which quickly prompt this second visit! I finally made it to the happy hour ! This time we were seated upstairs which was also a very calm after work happy hour drinks environment. Enough noise to hold conversation and hear the music well. The service was phenomenal both time. Our waitress and waiter both time were amazing! Anyone we interacted in the restaurant were beyond inviting and made you feel relax and at ease. It was 10/10 !! The birria tacos 10/10. Juicy, mouth watering, perfect with every bit. The sauce was just right. This pair with the passion fruit margarita which was refreshing and just the perfect amount of kick it. I am the pickiest eater when it comes to Mexican food - wishing things were spicier, more flavorful, etc... but this spot was spot on! The salsa and even the margarita was actuallyyy spicy. We were initially seated at a table. Once a booth got opened up, Manny was nice to shift us there and moved our drinks etc. We tried three different bowls - toasted avocado, crispy tofu and the fish bowl. All of them came with rice, sweet plantains, beans, salad.....each element of the bowl was packed with flavor and altogether it was a party in our mouth! I wanted to love this place based on all the great reviews... but it's a split decision. I came for dinner with my cousin on a Saturday night & we arrived at 7:30pm. This was the 1st mistake. While we were seated immediately, the music was so loud that we were screaming at each other to talk and had to keep repeating ourselves as it was hard to hear. The food was good... I'd give it a 4.5 for the amount of vegan options they had. I had the vegan meatballs bowl & it was delish. My cousin had the chicken quesadilla and he said it was good. And my marg was solid. No complimentary chips & salsa which is a minus. But at 8pm all of a sudden the lights went down to almost black-out & then the music got even louder as a DJ arrived and it sounded like a club in the city. Mind you... the place is small & there's no dance floor. When I asked the waiter for a light for the table, as it was so dark that I could not see my food... he looked at me like I had 2 heads & said there's no light. I had to use the flashlight on my phone & prop it up against the hot sauce bottle to effectively see my food and what I was eating. Service & ambience during dinner was a 2 for me. While the server started off as pleasant, he barely checked on us after the food arrived. And the drinks were slow to come out. We had to flag him down to get a to-go box and our bill as I was ready to get out of the place by this point. Don't get me wrong... the DJ & music he was spinning was great. It was just all wrong for people who came to have great dinner & conversation. I would not come here if you actually want to have meaningful convo with your company. I would only try it again for lunch or late night for drinks. My advice to Johnny Tequila's... save the ear-splitting music & dark ambiance to 9 or 10pm for when the club/bar crowd comes out. read more

First. I hate to do this. I love their food and ambience but tonight was the second time I was given the incorrect food at the sister restaurants , Humble and Johnny Tequila's. I am vegan and love they have lots of options. However, if you are going to offer a vegan menu you need a plan to ensure the food is correct. People order vegan food for various reasons including allergies. At Johnny Tequilas I ordered a tofu taco and was giving ground beef which I didn't know until I bit into it. Then they brought me a mushroom taco--ick. Finally got my order. They did comp the dish. Tonight, we went to Humble and my order of flatbread had regular cheese which I didn't realize until I ate a whole piece. They said the cook forgot. You can't do that if offer menus for people who might be ordering due to an allergy or food restriction. No comp tonight either or even a discount. I almost cried when I ate the beef taco. Again, I love and respect what they are trying to do here. Tasty vegan food is important and needed but a system has to be put into place to avoid this. read more

I love this place! The food, drinks and ambience are great! They have a DJ playing music on the weekends. My go to drink is the strawberry margarita but during my most recent visit I tried the mango margarita. It was so good! Glad I tried something new. We always get chips and guac, it always hits the spot. My go to meal is the steak quesadilla and it did not disappoint. My friend tried the fish tacos and she really enjoyed them. The specialty drinks and frozen alcoholic beverages are a must have! We also tried the guava flavored shots and we were pleasantly surprised. They have a great selection of tapas. Me and two friends came here on Tuesday night. The three of us had a bad day, and we really just wanted some good food and drinks. Drinks: I ordered a cocktail called Coco Loco, and it was really good! My friend got got the Grande Bulldog I think it was called. It was a margarita with a Corona. It tasted like fruit punch haha. I ended up getting one too! Food: -Queso Frito $7 was so good! I was disappointed a bit on the dip because the description said spicy guava, and it really just tasted like sweet guava jam. -Chicharrones de Pollo $10 this was also tasty but the presentation made me want to use a fork (with the toppings) and yet the fried chicken bits were too small to even fork so it was a finger dish for me which was meh when you have to finger pickled onions. The dish and dip were tasty, though. -Carne Asada Tacos $13 my friend said they were good -Tacos De Birria $21. My friend devoured it, so I assume it was amazing. It looked really good!! -Al Pastor Tacos SO SO SO delicious, does not disappoint at all. Also, I want to point out they cut decent slices of lime which is a plus. Some places give such tiny lime slices with no juice! -side of rice had good flavor. Some places with a side of mexican rice can be plain, but this was flavorful. -FLAN $7 Now, I love my flan. Eating flan was what got me to start yelping. I will say I ate it all because the flavors were still there, but the texture was too firm like a bread pudding. My friend even said it tasted like day old flan, so I was bummed about it. Annoying moment was the pressure of rushing. Google said Tuesday they stay open til 12am so we were planning to have another drink. Couple minutes before 11pm I asked what time they closed and they said 11. I mentioned about the 12 and was told that was before pandemic. Need to update that. Even on here, the Yelp says hours are til 1130pm on Tuesdays.
